another."},{"startTime":205.91,"endTime":210.41,"body":"And so when I started to somewhat"},{"startTime":205.91,"endTime":210.41,"body":"see that I had a gap in that"},{"startTime":210.45,"endTime":215.73,"body":"effort, I began to do some research"},{"startTime":210.45,"endTime":215.73,"body":"and, sign up for courses and get"},{"startTime":215.73,"endTime":217.51,"body":"certifications and things of that sort."},{"startTime":217.54,"endTime":222.06,"body":"And then I became very active"},{"startTime":217.54,"endTime":222.06,"body":"in the sustainability space."},{"startTime":222.08,"endTime":230.555,"body":"We also had a few climate disasters"},{"startTime":222.08,"endTime":230.555,"body":"occur near our house and that pushed my"},{"startTime":230.665,"endTime":235.205,"body":"efforts even further of really feeling"},{"startTime":230.665,"endTime":235.205,"body":"the sense of urgency and not wanting to"},{"startTime":235.205,"endTime":239.125,"body":"be just a kind of standard in the space."},{"startTime":239.125,"endTime":242.045,"body":"I wanted to really push"},{"startTime":239.125,"endTime":242.045,"body":"myself to go even of"},{"startTime":259.6,"endTime":264.58,"body":"what we need to do and we have the"},{"startTime":264.58,"endTime":269.95,"body":"resources available to be able to"},{"startTime":264.58,"endTime":269.95,"body":"implement the solutions in real time."},{"startTime":270.52,"endTime":274.74,"body":"There will still be climate catastrophes"},{"startTime":270.52,"endTime":274.74,"body":"that occur during this time because"},{"startTime":274.76,"endTime":279.325,"body":"we'll be you know, taking on the"},{"startTime":274.76,"endTime":279.325,"body":"brunt of the last 150 years or so."},{"startTime":279.915,"endTime":284.275,"body":"But at the same time, we really have"},{"startTime":279.915,"endTime":284.275,"body":"an opportunity here and I see us"},{"startTime":284.315,"endTime":290.425,"body":"missing that opportunity because we're"},{"startTime":284.315,"endTime":290.425,"body":"prioritizing so much of our time on"},{"startTime":290.555,"endTime":296.495,"body":"gotcha moments on trying to see who isn't"},{"startTime":290.555,"endTime":296.495,"body":"doing enough or doing it incorrectly."},{"startTime":296.77,"endTime":302.2,"body":"We're prioritizing a lot of our"},{"startTime":296.77,"endTime":302.2,"body":"ego and discourse over the actual"},{"startTime":302.2,"endTime":303.88,"body":"implementation of solutions."},{"startTime":303.93,"endTime":306.267,"body":"And that's not energy well spent."},{"startTime":306.277,"endTime":308.25,"body":"We're putting it in the wrong place."},{"startTime":309.47,"endTime":309.87,"body":"Okay."},{"startTime":309.89,"endTime":315.59,"body":"And what inspired you to"},{"startTime":309.89,"endTime":315.59,"body":"explore the intersection of"},{"startTime":315.62,"endTime":316.97,"body":"cancel culture and climate?"},{"startTime":318.86,"endTime":324.91,"body":"Well, before I even had a name for it, I"},{"startTime":318.86,"endTime":324.91,"body":"experienced it when I was working in tech."},{"startTime":324.98,"endTime":329.63,"body":"I was really looking to get into"},{"startTime":324.98,"endTime":329.63,"body":"the sustainability organization"},{"startTime":329.63,"endTime":331.68,"body":"at a very large company."},{"startTime":332.405,"endTime":338.845,"body":"And I was kind of doing some things"},{"startTime":332.405,"endTime":338.845,"body":"on my own, and I had the opportunity"},{"startTime":338.875,"endTime":342.742,"body":"through just leadership support to"},{"startTime":338.875,"endTime":342.742,"body":"kind of do these grassroots movements,"},{"startTime":343.152,"endTime":347.092,"body":"but I was looking to become a bit more"},{"startTime":343.152,"endTime":347.092,"body":"established in the sustainability space."},{"startTime":347.092,"endTime":351.112,"body":"And so I again, I"},{"startTime":347.092,"endTime":351.112,"body":"referenced my scrappiness."},{"startTime":351.142,"endTime":357.792,"body":"I was able to negotiate my, me"},{"startTime":351.142,"endTime":357.792,"body":"being the author of our blog posts"},{"startTime":357.792,"endTime":363.532,"body":"that is going to be representing"},{"startTime":357.792,"endTime":363.532,"body":"our team COP, and this was cop 26."},{"startTime":363.562,"endTime":364.902,"body":"And cop."},{"startTime":364.922,"endTime":369.142,"body":"26 received a lot of negative feedback."},{"startTime":369.182,"endTime":375.217,"body":"We were just in the middle of the pandemic"},{"startTime":369.182,"endTime":375.217,"body":"and it was a lot of empty promises, or"},{"startTime":375.217,"endTime":380.277,"body":"at least that was the negative feedback"},{"startTime":375.217,"endTime":380.277,"body":"that was being received and the blog post"},{"startTime":380.287,"endTime":390.027,"body":"was pulled just due to fear of further"},{"startTime":380.287,"endTime":390.027,"body":"exposing ourselves to negative publicity."},{"startTime":390.087,"endTime":394.012,"body":"And that was the first time I had"},{"startTime":390.087,"endTime":394.012,"body":"experienced it firsthand, but I"},{"startTime":394.012,"endTime":395.402,"body":"didn't really have a name for it."},{"startTime":395.882,"endTime":397.212,"body":"It was very frustrating for me."},{"startTime":397.212,"endTime":402.662,"body":"I felt like there was a lot to actually"},{"startTime":397.212,"endTime":402.662,"body":"celebrate, but then out of fear, an"},{"startTime":402.662,"endTime":406.902,"body":"organization made a decision to just"},{"startTime":402.662,"endTime":406.902,"body":"go silent versus be proud and also"},{"startTime":406.902,"endTime":408.802,"body":"admit that there's room for progress."},{"startTime":409.292,"endTime":411.722,"body":"So that fear was interesting to me."},{"startTime":411.772,"endTime":413.682,"body":"I viewed that as a problem."},{"startTime":414.032,"endTime":417.892,"body":"As I became more and more in the"},{"startTime":414.032,"endTime":417.892,"body":"sustainability space, I started to"},{"startTime":417.892,"endTime":423.327,"body":"see in climate fighting to being"},{"startTime":417.892,"endTime":423.327,"body":"prioritized a standard example"},{"startTime":423.327,"endTime":428.677,"body":"is, a nature based solution person"},{"startTime":423.327,"endTime":428.677,"body":"and a direct air capture person."},{"startTime":429.077,"endTime":433.497,"body":"They often can get into arguments"},{"startTime":429.077,"endTime":433.497,"body":"publicly, which makes the space look"},{"startTime":433.507,"endTime":438.15,"body":"like we don't know what we're doing I"},{"startTime":433.507,"endTime":438.15,"body":"started to see that as a disservice."},{"startTime":438.16,"endTime":440.85,"body":"It was making industry"},{"startTime":438.16,"endTime":440.85,"body":"leaders even more fearful."},{"startTime":440.87,"endTime":443.65,"body":"So it's the cycle that"},{"startTime":440.87,"endTime":443.65,"body":"continues to feed itself."},{"startTime":444.17,"endTime":448.63,"body":"And to me, it represents cancel"},{"startTime":444.17,"endTime":448.63,"body":"culture, similar to very a lot of"},{"startTime":448.63,"endTime":450.74,"body":"movements that we've seen this occur."},{"startTime":451.394,"endTime":453.144,"body":"Cancel culture does not have a formula."},{"startTime":453.144,"endTime":455.612,"body":"It doesn't respect nuance."},{"startTime":455.629,"endTime":456.819,"body":"It's very hungry."},{"startTime":457.359,"endTime":459.299,"body":"It's looking for its next victim."},{"startTime":459.299,"endTime":464.899,"body":"And there isn't a process in place that"},{"startTime":459.299,"endTime":464.899,"body":"can actually lead towards accountability."},{"startTime":464.899,"endTime":466.429,"body":"It isn't an effective tool."},{"startTime":466.779,"endTime":470.529,"body":"And I started speaking about that"},{"startTime":466.779,"endTime":470.529,"body":"more and then two years later,"},{"startTime":470.529,"endTime":472.549,"body":"we've got us on a podcast cancellation"},{"startTime":475.019,"endTime":482.429,"body":"affect climate leaders, businesses,"},{"startTime":482.779,"endTime":486.799,"body":"activists, you know, are there any"},{"startTime":482.779,"endTime":486.799,"body":"examples that have stood out to you?"},{"startTime":488.099,"endTime":488.609,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":488.729,"endTime":495.479,"body":"So I talked about the symptoms"},{"startTime":488.729,"endTime":495.479,"body":"of cancel culture in the space."},{"startTime":495.529,"endTime":500.019,"body":"And there's three basic ones that"},{"startTime":495.529,"endTime":500.019,"body":"kind of put everyone in a bucket."},{"startTime":500.019,"endTime":504.209,"body":"There's green washing, which is when"},{"startTime":500.019,"endTime":504.209,"body":"you're accused of lying, or maybe"},{"startTime":504.209,"endTime":509.579,"body":"you have lied, but it's an accusation"},{"startTime":504.209,"endTime":509.579,"body":"of lying about your true impact."},{"startTime":510.029,"endTime":513.669,"body":"And then there's green hushing, which"},{"startTime":510.029,"endTime":513.669,"body":"is when an organization has gone"},{"startTime":513.679,"endTime":517.799,"body":"silent, whether that means that they've"},{"startTime":513.679,"endTime":517.799,"body":"gone silent about something good that"},{"startTime":517.799,"endTime":523.219,"body":"they've done or silent because they"},{"startTime":517.799,"endTime":523.219,"body":"didn't do enough as they promised."},{"startTime":523.219,"endTime":526.812,"body":"They didn't meet those expectations,"},{"startTime":523.219,"endTime":526.812,"body":"either way it's silence."},{"startTime":527.272,"endTime":531.492,"body":"And then there's this new symptom"},{"startTime":527.272,"endTime":531.492,"body":"that's starting to reveal itself as this"},{"startTime":531.502,"endTime":535.742,"body":"green recanting, which is organisations"},{"startTime":531.502,"endTime":535.742,"body":"that are simply just deleting their"},{"startTime":535.742,"endTime":540.102,"body":"commitments entirely, simply because"},{"startTime":535.742,"endTime":540.102,"body":"they're not really seeing that return"},{"startTime":540.102,"endTime":545.682,"body":"on their investment anymore due to"},{"startTime":540.102,"endTime":545.682,"body":"heightened scrutiny, out from the public."},{"startTime":545.702,"endTime":551.562,"body":"And so this is continuing to fuel"},{"startTime":545.702,"endTime":551.562,"body":"itself and it leaves us stuck."},{"startTime":551.642,"endTime":555.512,"body":"We can't progress in any way if"},{"startTime":551.642,"endTime":555.512,"body":"we're constantly operating in"},{"startTime":555.512,"endTime":558.142,"body":"this state of fear and silence."},{"startTime":558.182,"endTime":563.912,"body":"And a lot of industry leaders that can"},{"startTime":558.182,"endTime":563.912,"body":"fund a significant amount of progress"},{"startTime":564.002,"endTime":568.162,"body":"are operating in this state of fear"},{"startTime":564.002,"endTime":568.162,"body":"because we've put them in a box."},{"startTime":568.662,"endTime":570.202,"body":"Where can they go from here?"},{"startTime":570.542,"endTime":575.032,"body":"If perfection is the goal, in fueling polarisation"},{"startTime":630.302,"endTime":631.242,"body":"and climate discourse?"},{"startTime":631.242,"endTime":634.072,"body":"You know, can it be of"},{"startTime":631.242,"endTime":634.072,"body":"the solution as well?"},{"startTime":635.792,"endTime":641.622,"body":"It is definitely an opportunity"},{"startTime":635.792,"endTime":641.622,"body":"for people and organisations to"},{"startTime":642.027,"endTime":644.627,"body":"create excitement and responsible"},{"startTime":654.247,"endTime":658.337,"body":"in the way that we engage, and"},{"startTime":654.247,"endTime":658.337,"body":"I don't believe we're there commitments."},{"startTime":668.562,"endTime":671.632,"body":"They've been lying for two"},{"startTime":668.562,"endTime":671.632,"body":"years and everyone knew."},{"startTime":672.202,"endTime":673.222,"body":"And that's the headline."},{"startTime":673.822,"endTime":679.042,"body":"And so as a consumer, I'm getting"},{"startTime":673.822,"endTime":679.042,"body":"messages like this all the time."},{"startTime":679.102,"endTime":681.562,"body":"And so I'm just simply"},{"startTime":679.102,"endTime":681.562,"body":"reading those headlines."},{"startTime":681.842,"endTime":687.872,"body":"And what I'm reacting to is that"},{"startTime":681.842,"endTime":687.872,"body":"I now want to ban that company and"},{"startTime":687.882,"endTime":692.552,"body":"anyone affiliated with it from ever"},{"startTime":687.882,"endTime":692.552,"body":"participating in climate action again."},{"startTime":692.822,"endTime":697.782,"body":"They've lost their credibility with"},{"startTime":692.822,"endTime":697.782,"body":"me and I no longer respect them."},{"startTime":698.552,"endTime":701.302,"body":"I haven't done my due"},{"startTime":698.552,"endTime":701.302,"body":"diligence to read the article."},{"startTime":701.782,"endTime":705.972,"body":"I haven't done my due diligence to"},{"startTime":701.782,"endTime":705.972,"body":"really understand the motivations"},{"startTime":705.982,"endTime":707.742,"body":"that might be behind that
