And yeah, I went into"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":221.9,"endTime":226.28,"body":"University and did science and"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":226.28,"endTime":230.03,"body":"plant science was what I"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":226.28,"endTime":230.03,"body":"specialized in molecular"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":230.03,"endTime":236.24,"body":"biology. And then I joined a"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":230.03,"endTime":236.24,"body":"four year Ph. D program project"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":236.24,"endTime":240.56,"body":"studying biological control. So"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":236.24,"endTime":240.56,"body":"you know, real love of nature, I"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":240.56,"endTime":243.11,"body":"worked some of the summers in"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":240.56,"endTime":243.11,"body":"that time in a wildlife park as"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":243.11,"endTime":247.79,"body":"well for a wildlife park place"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":243.11,"endTime":247.79,"body":"that's dedicated to the to the"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":247.79,"endTime":250.67,"body":"breeding of endangered species."},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":247.79,"endTime":250.67,"body":"So I've worked closely with"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":250.67,"endTime":253.97,"body":"scimitar horned Oryx with all"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":250.67,"endTime":253.97,"body":"kinds of monkeys, you know,"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":253.97,"endTime":257.36,"body":"fabulous, fabulous experience."},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":253.97,"endTime":257.36,"body":"And while I was studying for the"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":257.36,"endTime":264.56,"body":"PhD, I took up this hobby of"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":257.36,"endTime":264.56,"body":"computers and I started teaching"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":264.56,"endTime":268.64,"body":"computers to the undergrads and"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":264.56,"endTime":268.64,"body":"the university and slowly the"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":269.0,"endTime":275.0,"body":"computer side of things started"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":269.0,"endTime":275.0,"body":"to take over. And I after four"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":275.0,"endTime":279.29,"body":"years in the PhD, I dropped out"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":275.0,"endTime":279.29,"body":"of it to do computers because I"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":279.65,"endTime":284.27,"body":"was I got so into it. And I"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":279.65,"endTime":284.27,"body":"started a computer company and"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":284.27,"endTime":286.73,"body":"you know what, that one well for"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":284.27,"endTime":286.73,"body":"a while, but now I'm in the"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":286.73,"endTime":290.54,"body":"absolute fortunate position"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":286.73,"endTime":290.54,"body":"where I get to combine my two"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":290.54,"endTime":295.07,"body":"passions of sustainability and"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":290.54,"endTime":295.07,"body":"technology. You know, it's"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":295.16,"endTime":296.48,"body":"absolutely ideal."},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":298.4,"endTime":303.11,"body":"Unfortunately, my Dad is no"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":298.4,"endTime":303.11,"body":"longer with us. It's not that he"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":303.11,"endTime":309.2,"body":"died. He was diagnosed in 2010"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":303.11,"endTime":309.2,"body":"with Alzheimer's. And so, you"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":309.2,"endTime":313.55,"body":"know, 2021 11 years later,"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":309.2,"endTime":313.55,"body":"there's not much left of him,"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":313.55,"endTime":317.36,"body":"unfortunately. But, you know,"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":313.55,"endTime":317.36,"body":"I'm an optimist. I'm a glass"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":317.36,"endTime":320.54,"body":"half full person. So looking on"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":317.36,"endTime":320.54,"body":"the bright side of things, at"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":320.54,"endTime":322.79,"body":"least he has no idea what's"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":320.54,"endTime":322.79,"body":"going on in the world in the"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":322.79,"endTime":325.55,"body":"last 18 months, he has no idea"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":322.79,"endTime":325.55,"body":"that, you know, COVID has been"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":325.55,"endTime":329.21,"body":"around and has killed so many"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":325.55,"endTime":329.21,"body":"people, and left some so many"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":329.21,"endTime":332.93,"body":"other people with debilitating,"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":329.21,"endTime":332.93,"body":"lifelong injuries. So that's"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":332.93,"endTime":333.32,"body":"good."},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":334.07,"endTime":338.45,"body":"But speaking of COVID, you know"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":334.07,"endTime":338.45,"body":"how it has changed the world"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":338.45,"endTime":343.37,"body":"over the last year and a half,"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":338.45,"endTime":343.37,"body":"nearly two years now. The world"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":343.37,"endTime":347.45,"body":"has changed enormously in other"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":343.37,"endTime":347.45,"body":"ways, too, which may have flown"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":347.45,"endTime":351.83,"body":"below your radar. Because of all"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":347.45,"endTime":351.83,"body":"the COVID stories that have that"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":351.83,"endTime":354.17,"body":"have been out there, there have"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":351.83,"endTime":354.17,"body":"been some incredible changes."},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":354.71,"endTime":360.14,"body":"The European Union, for example,"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":354.71,"endTime":360.14,"body":"passed a law in June of last"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":360.14,"endTime":364.94,"body":"year, mandating that all 27"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":360.14,"endTime":364.94,"body":"nations of the EU reduce their"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":364.94,"endTime":370.31,"body":"emissions 55% by 2030. And"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":364.94,"endTime":370.31,"body":"that's a massively ambitious"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":370.31,"endTime":374.42,"body":"target, that's going to be"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":370.31,"endTime":374.42,"body":"really hard to get to just for"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":374.42,"endTime":378.47,"body":"context. In 2020, during the"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":374.42,"endTime":378.47,"body":"pandemic, we dropped our"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":378.47,"endTime":383.87,"body":"emissions 7%. And they went back"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":378.47,"endTime":383.87,"body":"up in 2021 by 5%. So we've got"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":383.87,"endTime":387.53,"body":"an overall reduction of 2%, in"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":383.87,"endTime":387.53,"body":"the last two years, and we got"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":387.53,"endTime":390.77,"body":"to get them down. Well, we don't"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":387.53,"endTime":390.77,"body":"have to get them down to 55%."},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":391.04,"endTime":394.01,"body":"Because we're already it's"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":391.04,"endTime":394.01,"body":"against our 1990 baseline. And"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":394.01,"endTime":397.07,"body":"we're already 24% down against"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":394.01,"endTime":397.07,"body":"that, but we still have to get"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":397.07,"endTime":403.13,"body":"them down another 31% by 2030,"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":397.07,"endTime":403.13,"body":"that's a little over eight years"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":403.13,"endTime":407.0,"body":"away, that's hugely ambitious"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":403.13,"endTime":407.0,"body":"target and lots of things are"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":407.0,"endTime":409.52,"body":"going to have to change, there's"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":407.0,"endTime":409.52,"body":"going to have to be systemic"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":409.52,"endTime":413.06,"body":"changes for us to reach that"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":409.52,"endTime":413.06,"body":"target. And it's not just the"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":413.06,"endTime":416.42,"body":"EU, the US, under the Biden"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":413.06,"endTime":416.42,"body":"administration have said they"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":416.42,"endTime":422.24,"body":"wanted to cut their emissions"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":416.42,"endTime":422.24,"body":"52% by 2030. Now, I know, Biden"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":422.24,"endTime":424.94,"body":"administration has elections"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":422.24,"endTime":424.94,"body":"coming up next year, might not"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":424.94,"endTime":428.9,"body":"last, etc, etc. But it still"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":424.94,"endTime":428.9,"body":"speaks to a trend. And it's not"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":428.9,"endTime":433.82,"body":"just the EU and the US, China"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":428.9,"endTime":433.82,"body":"have said that they want to get"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":433.91,"endTime":437.42,"body":"to net zero by 2060. But they've"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":433.91,"endTime":437.42,"body":"also said that they want their"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":437.42,"endTime":441.5,"body":"emissions to peak by 2030. And"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":437.42,"endTime":441.5,"body":"that they want to have all of"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":441.5,"endTime":447.05,"body":"their regions source 40% of"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":441.5,"endTime":447.05,"body":"their power from renewables by"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":447.05,"endTime":450.38,"body":"2030. So again, huge changes"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":447.05,"endTime":450.38,"body":"happening there in the next"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":450.41,"endTime":455.9,"body":"eight years. They've already for"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":450.41,"endTime":455.9,"body":"the first time, this year, in"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":455.9,"endTime":461.84,"body":"2021, China's non fossil fuel"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":455.9,"endTime":461.84,"body":"power capacity has outstripped"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":461.93,"endTime":465.71,"body":"coal power for the first time."},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":461.93,"endTime":465.71,"body":"And again, that's that speaks to"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":465.71,"endTime":470.6,"body":"a trend, the non fossil fuel"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":465.71,"endTime":470.6,"body":"power capacity, renewables,"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":470.63,"endTime":474.32,"body":"hydro etc, are on the up and up"},{"speaker":"Tom Raftery","startTime":470.63,"endTime":474.32,"body":"and up.
