Hello everyone and welcome to the inwils interval

A short, monthly podcast that is perfect for you to listen to while taking a quick break with or without a beverage and biscuits.

In this months interval, I want to talk about dreams

To start off this episode I have to make a confession to make. I'm a sleepwalker! Yes, I am one of those strange people who finds walking while they are asleep an interesting activity. I have, in the past, wake up with every single light on in the flat and once even woke up in my car! On a positive I haven't be found wandering through the flat looking at my hands and say out nasty spot - ok, nasty is not the word she uses but I don't want to say such words on this podcast. And if you have no idea what I am talking about, then go and read your Shakespeare!

I once read or heard someone who was disputing the fact that Lady Macbeth was actually sleepwalking. According to science, if there is such a science that covers sleepwalking, states that the walker does not need any light to navigate around objects. It is as if they have some sort of sleep memory that knows where everything is and just circumnavigates objects in the dark! However, the aforementioned Lady Macbeth had a lantern or candle she was using so -a fraud! she wasn't sleep-walking at all! I have to say at this point that I think she had a candle because it would have been a very boring play if she had just walked around on a dark stage saying her lines!

Sigmund Freud, among many other things he thought or quoted, believed that dreams revealed unconsciously the repressed conflicts and or wishes. This does worry me since this would suggest that I have this desire to turn on all the lights and sit in a car in my PJs! We all dream although we sometimes don't remember what we dream. Maybe this could account for some of those Deja Vue moments when we feel we have seen or been somewhere before - maybe we have just dreamt about it and not remembered to that point in time

We don't dream all the time we are sleeping. According to science, we have stages of sleep. We don't actually fall into deep sleep or dream sleep straight away. What I find interesting is what the brain is doing while we are sleeping or in the process of falling to sleep. We tend to dream when we are in REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement and there are 3 stages before we actually reach this dreaming state. Stage one we are in a light sleep stage from which we can easily be woken, this lasts about 10 minutes. After this a long stage from between 30 to 60 minutes when our muscles become more relaxed and our brain waves slow. And then the final stage before REM sleep lasts about 20 to 40 minutes. During this stage delta wave patterns in the brain increase and you could experience body movements - during this stage is also very difficult to wake someone.

And then REM sleep happens and we start to dream ~Our eyes will flutter beneath our eyelids and our breathing becomes regular. But what is interesting is what the brain does. It actually paralyzes our muscles in our body so we don't actually act out our dreams! I'm guessing that at this stage of my sleeping, my brain actually forgets to turn my muscles off and hence why I go a-walking! There has been some research done on trying to become lucid in our dreams. If this is possible then you actually become aware that you are dreaming and then gain control of the dream. In this state, you can interact, fly, change things and even solve problems. Sounds great but also scary - have you ever had that dream when you try to fall to sleep in our dream in order to escape some approaching doom? If it was possible to be awake in your dream maybe you will never wake up - maybe life itself is a dream and you are actually asleep right now!

There are actually some common dream scenarios that occur when we are dreaming. Some of these, sleep experts have claimed have specific meanings! During REM sleep we can actually experience up to 5 dream episodes that can last between 15 to 40 minutes. Roughly we spend about 2 hours of our sleep dreaming. But what are these common dreams and what could they mean.

Having a dream when you are being chased suggests that you are avoiding something in your real life which you should suggest, your teeth falling out relates to anxieties about our own appearance, unable to find a toilet means you might be finding it difficult to express yourself and the infamous naked in public relates to not being able to find yourself or having uncertainty about who you are. There are more but I don't have the time to go through them all but when I was researching for this episode - yes I do research, I'm learning at the same time as you here - I came across this great quote - Your unconscious will not spell it out for you, this is a job for your conscious to figure out. Typical rather than just telling us our brain wants to make it into a game or some sort of mystery!

Anyway, it is nearly time for me to head off to dreamland so I best conclude this episode. I'm not sure that we will ever fully understand dreaming and what our dreams mean. We could hypothesis or try to predict but our brain and sleep will always keep us guessing to the true meaning. The important thing is that we make time to sleep and pay more attention to situations in the waking world rather than those of our dreams.

I Hope you enjoy this inwils interval. Don’t forget to subscribe and come back next month and if you want to provide some positive feedback then do take advantage of the recording feature on the webpage. I'll play any recorded feedback at the end of the following episode - as long as it's not rude or too nasty!

Until next time, have fun, stay positive and sweet dreams..
