Hello everyone and welcome to the inwils interval

A short, monthly podcast that is perfect for you to listen to while taking a quick break with or without a beverage and biscuits.

In this months interval, I want to talk about  time

First up a thank you. There appears to be quite a regular following of the intervals at the moment. That really makes me happy and motivates me to create more. If you have any friends who you think might enjoy this podcast then do pass the link onto them. Before we start, just quick self-promotions to say if you would like to support any of my content, including this podcast, then do venture over to either my Ko-fi or patron page and join the supporters there but please remember that best support you can give me is actually listening to this and the other episodes.

If you were to ask me what is the most precious thing in the world I would definitely say time. We often don't have enough time to do everything we want. When we dislike a situation time seems to go so slowly, and yet when we are enjoying a situation, time flies by!

If you listened to episode 7 on eyes - and if you haven't then go and listen to it now! You will be aware that time passing is one of the nine senses we possess. Even in the absence of a watch, clock or any time measuring device we are aware that time is passing.

I actually remember the moment when I realised that time was passing and there was nothing I could do about it.  I have been fascinated by time and time travelling for some time, and actually came up with a theory of what is happening with time. Don't laugh at this!

Imagine that every second of time is in a bubble or sphere. Within our existence, we actually move from one sphere to the next. These spheres twist around in a random fashion. With this theory, I do consider that the future is already mapped out just the same as the past is behind us. Sometimes these spheres touch. At this point, we get a glimpse of the future that we remember as we move into that sphere. This would explain that Deja Vue feeling! I know that you can pick the theory to piece but for me, it helps explain the unexplainable which means that I am happier in the world where I exist!
Even without my theory relating to time, there are many interesting facts about time. For example, the light from the sun takes 8 minutes to travel to us, so if the sun exploded now, we would not see the light for another 8 minutes! actually, 8 minutes and 20 seconds if you want to be precise.  Makes you wonder what you would get up to in the next 8 minutes if the sun did go boom! And can I say how honoured I am that you decided to spend your last 8 minutes listening to my podcast!

Teaching mathematics there has always been something that annoys me about time. Why is it based on the number 60, 12 and 24! Rather than saying there are 60 seconds in a minute would it not be easier to say there are 100! and then 10 hours in half a day and 20 hours in a full day - it would certainly make the mathematics easy. And before you all think that it would cause the time to speed up or slow down, it wouldn't. Time would continue to progress at its usual pace. It would be the clock's hands or digital readings that would increase or decrease.

And talking about time increasing or decreasing, did you know that there is something known as a leap second? Yes, you heard that write and I didn't say it incorrectly. As you might be aware, the rotation of Earth is slowing. Don't worry it is not likely to stop in our lifetime but it is slowing down. Because of this, the day lengths are getting longer than 24 hours. In fact, next week your watch will actually be one second slow! In order to compensate for this slowing, the Earth Rotation Service, regulate the astronomical time, add a second that is called a leap second. The last one was done in June 2015 - I bet you didn't notice, I certainly didn't!

Before we leave the wonderful facts about time, and there are plenty more than the ones I could cover in this podcast. I wanted to just let you know that time might stop in the future. Yes, stop altogether. You might be aware that the universe appears to be expanding - space would be a really great theme for one of these podcasts! The planets and stars far away appear to be accelerating. Now, I don't have the time in this podcast to talk about dark energy but I do have the time to talk about the alternative theory proposed by a Spanish Physicist. In their theory, the far-away planets and stars appear to be moving faster because we are actually slowing down. Time is slowing down and will eventually stop. Now, if they are correct then in a few billion years everything will be frozen in time and we will be stuck in one snapshot of time, forever...intriguing or completely scary!

To conclude, I would like to share one of my mantras for life, give out generously, give in graciously but never give up. Giving out generously might not only apply to money but also to the most valuable and precious commodity that we all have, our time!

I hope you have enjoyed this inwils interval. Don’t forget to subscribe and come back next month and if you want to provide some positive feedback then do take advantage of the recording feature on the webpage. I'll play any recorded feedback at the end of the following episode - as long as it's not rude or too nasty!

Until next time, have fun, stay positive and make good use of your time...
