00:02:48.719 --> 00:02:55.919 Halfway up the mountain, Isaac asked his father a question that uh hits the Bible like a meteor. 00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:04.560 Um He says, The fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? 00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:07.680 Where is the lamb? 00:03:08.560 --> 00:03:15.520 Abraham answered him with one of the most prophetic sentences in the Old Testament, though he didn't know it was prophetic at the time. 00:03:15.919 --> 00:03:19.199 He said, God Himself will provide the Lamb. 00:03:20.719 --> 00:03:26.879 The Bible spends the next 2,000 years answering that question, where is the Lamb? 00:03:27.199 --> 00:03:31.680 And the answer doesn't show up until John 129. 00:03:32.719 --> 00:03:45.520 When a wilderness prophet named John the Baptist steps in stops in his tracks and points to a man walking toward him through the dust of the Jordan Valley and says four words that change history. 00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:48.719 Behold the Lamb of God. 00:03:49.759 --> 00:03:50.400 The Lamb. 00:03:50.800 --> 00:03:53.599 Not prophet, not king, not Messiah, not teacher. 00:03:53.759 --> 00:03:55.840 Like I said earlier, all those would have been true. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:04:00.240 We could have said any of those about Jesus, and and John wouldn't have been wrong. 00:04:01.199 --> 00:04:18.480 But John reaches deeper and he picks this one title that the man it runs uh all the way through scripture and he hangs hangs it on this one word for Jesus as he's walking towards him, the Lamb of God. 00:04:19.360 --> 00:04:32.240 That's such a you know, just uh putting together this podcast and and seeing how it all comes together, it's something that we forget because we read the Bible in snippets, you know. 00:04:32.399 --> 00:04:40.240 Uh read a psalm here, read this there, but the entire Bible follows this thread, like you said, the Lamb. 00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:41.199 The Lamb. 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:52.639 You know, uh every ancient culture sacrificed something, and a lot of people will say, What is this big thing about sacrifice in the Bible? 00:04:52.959 --> 00:04:54.639 It's not just in the Bible. 00:04:54.720 --> 00:05:01.279 Uh you go to uh any ancient culture, anything they wrote down, they all had sacrifices. 00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:04.399 And uh we think, isn't that primitive? 00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:08.079 Don't you think God would have went in a different direction? 00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:10.800 And it's something that you've heard a lot of people talk about, right? 00:05:10.959 --> 00:05:14.000 Like, well, why did we need a sacrifice? 00:05:14.079 --> 00:05:16.000 What was the whole point in this? 00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:21.519 Well they weren't the only ones, let's put it that way. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:29.199 The ancient Egyptians, they sacrificed bulls, the Babylonians offered grain, oil, and sheep and oxen to Marduk. 00:05:29.519 --> 00:05:35.360 The Greeks burned animals on the altar to Apollo and Zeus, and the Romans had their own sacrificial cults. 00:05:35.839 --> 00:05:43.920 Um the Ninevehes, uh, even Solomon was accused of sacrificing people. 00:05:45.040 --> 00:05:47.199 Uh the Bible doesn't say he did. 00:05:47.439 --> 00:06:04.879 I'm praying that he didn't, but uh at the advice of his nine hundred wives and concubines, he had put up new altars to different gods, and some of those gods were like Melech, the detestable god of the Ammonites, who demanded um a child. 00:06:05.920 --> 00:06:20.560 And even the Canaanites, um before the sins of the Ammonites had come in, as God had had put it, um they were sacrificing their children. 00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:25.680 They would put 'em in jars and bury them outside in front of their house so that they would be blessed. 00:06:26.639 --> 00:06:40.480 Um then the Aztecs, we know here in in in North America or Americas that they were sacrificing human beings to the gods twenty thousand at a time sometimes. 00:06:41.360 --> 00:06:49.439 And uh even up until the time when the first European contact with uh Papua New Guinea, they were sacrificing pigs. 00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:55.519 Uh so it didn't stop until then. 00:06:57.120 --> 00:06:58.319 Now we wonder why. 00:06:58.480 --> 00:07:00.160 What is what is the reason why? 00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:12.639 Well, there was a Catholic anthropologist named Renal Girard, and uh he spent his career studying this, and his conclusion is this whether you believe him or not. 00:07:13.519 --> 00:07:25.040 Human beings carry an unbearable awareness that something is wrong with us between us and between us and whatever higher power there is. 00:07:25.519 --> 00:07:29.759 We feel the weight of guilt and the threat of judgment. 00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:37.600 And sacrifice is the universal attempt to say to say it without saying it, I deserve death. 00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:40.639 Let this Lamb take it for me. 00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:52.079 Now, he's Catholic, so that that little statement he just made there is phrased in a way that fits right into our doctrinal statement. 00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:55.199 Um we're sinners in need of a savior. 00:07:55.279 --> 00:07:55.439 Yeah. 00:07:55.759 --> 00:07:57.839 Uh we're we're in need of a sacrifice. 00:07:58.160 --> 00:08:02.079 It's interesting though, because it's not just the Jews doing this, right? 00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:11.120 Right or every every different tribe, you know, all these different nations, they're all involved in this. 00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:13.680 Uh there's sacrifice all across. 00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:17.600 We've we've got to do something to appease the gods. 00:08:17.759 --> 00:08:27.759 And so one after another, whether it's a lamb, whether it's a bull, um, grain, or sometimes even children, um, they're all being offered. 00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:36.799 And you know, God uh was very meticulous when he gave the law to uh the Israelites. 00:08:36.879 --> 00:08:47.679 This is way, way, way after Abraham, um, about six, seven hundred years after Abraham, that we get the Exodus and God gives him the law. 00:08:47.919 --> 00:08:58.879 And what God was doing there, he was showing the people he was showing Abraham in the beginning that I'm not like it. 00:08:58.960 --> 00:09:07.759 And that's this is not the only thing he was saying, but he was saying to Abraham, look, I am not like all these other gods. 00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:10.159 This insatiable altar. 00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:17.360 You know, if you think about it, you sacrifice something on the altar and you had a good crop. 00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:28.960 And then so the next year you're thinking, I'll sacrifice the same thing, but your wife says, We should probably sacrifice a little more just in just just so he knows that we're grateful. 00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:36.159 And then a little more, and then a little more, and then a kid, and then what? 00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:38.080 What are we doing here? 00:09:38.320 --> 00:09:38.480 Right. 00:09:38.720 --> 00:09:40.159 Uh it's insatiable. 00:09:40.399 --> 00:09:54.480 But when God laid out the the um law on on how to be right with me, he said, You don't have to worry about everybody else, you don't have to worry about what the altar's claiming they want. 00:09:54.639 --> 00:09:56.639 I will never change my mind. 00:09:57.360 --> 00:10:02.480 Give me a lamb in the morning, you give me a lamb at night, and we're good. 00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:15.120 And uh so one of the things he was telling Abraham at that time, I am not like all these other gods, I will sacrifice for you, I'll provide the sacrifice. 00:10:15.360 --> 00:10:30.000 I remember you preached a sermon um it was probably a couple years ago, but on on that passage of scripture, and one of the things you brought out in that was you know, God's asking Abraham to come and sacrifice his son Isaac. 00:10:30.240 --> 00:10:34.799 And so Isaac, or Abraham takes Isaac and starts walking up Mount Moriah. 00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:38.480 And when Isaac asked that question, where's the lamb? 00:13:30.879 --> 00:13:35.120 And Adam says, Here I am, but I we were naked, so I hid because I was afraid. 00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:37.279 And what does God have to do? 00:13:37.679 --> 00:13:52.159 He has to provide clothing for them, and so a sacrifice is made so that he can provide um skins for for Adam and Eve, Eve to clothe them, and an animal had to die for those very first sinners to be covered. 00:13:52.320 --> 00:13:59.840 Um, and then we just we start tracking this sacrifice that covers sin throughout history. 00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:08.399 So we just talked about Moriah, uh, where God provides a lamb in place of Abraham having to sacrifice his son Isaac. 00:14:08.720 --> 00:14:12.000 Um, and so Abraham just names the place right there. 00:14:12.159 --> 00:14:14.559 He said he called the Lord Will Provide. 00:14:14.799 --> 00:14:14.960 Right. 00:14:15.279 --> 00:14:18.240 Um, and like we said, we didn't know exactly what that would look like. 00:14:18.399 --> 00:14:21.919 Abraham wasn't sure either, but he believed that God would do something. 00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:26.240 And uh 2,000 years later on a hill not far from Riah, God did. 00:14:26.639 --> 00:14:36.399 Um and then you go to Egypt, and I talked about this a little bit in my sermon on Sunday, but you know, God is trying to bring uh the nation of Israel out of Egypt. 00:14:36.480 --> 00:14:42.480 They've been slaves there for hundreds of years, and over and over, Moses goes to Pharaoh and says, Let my people go. 00:14:42.720 --> 00:14:45.200 Moses' like, no, I'm not doing it. 00:14:45.360 --> 00:14:59.919 And so finally it gets to the point where God says, Okay, if if you're not gonna, if you're gonna not gonna do this, your heart is gonna be hardened towards me, it's gonna cost, and it's gonna cost the firstborn son of everyone in Egypt, um, including Pharaoh. 00:15:00.080 --> 00:15:11.279 And the only way that the Israelites were protected from that is they had to take a lamb, sacrifice it, and take the blood of the lamb and put it over the doorpost of their house. 00:15:11.519 --> 00:15:14.480 Um, and this lamb was very specific, right? 00:18:07.599 --> 00:18:15.759 Well, the prophet Isaiah tells us about 700 BC, he writes one of the most stunning chapters, um, I think in all of scripture. 00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:20.000 He's he's describing someone who hasn't even been born yet. 00:18:20.160 --> 00:18:27.759 And so he sees this vision and he writes this He was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities. 00:18:28.079 --> 00:18:33.119 Punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds. 00:18:33.279 --> 00:18:42.480 He says, We all went uh astray like sheep, and we all have turned uh to our own way, and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all. 00:18:42.720 --> 00:18:54.480 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth like a lamb, there's that word, led to the slaughter, and like a sheep silent before his shears, he did not open his mouth. 00:18:54.720 --> 00:19:00.000 A lamb pierced, crushed, silent, carrying the iniquity of us all. 00:19:00.720 --> 00:19:06.000 And he says it's it's like a a person, but he's describing it like a lamb. 00:19:06.079 --> 00:19:10.720 And this was 700 years before Jesus ever shows up on the scene. 00:19:10.799 --> 00:19:16.960 And so you read that, and if you if you didn't know that that was written in 700 BC, you'd be like, oh, he's talking about Jesus. 00:19:17.680 --> 00:19:20.720 But nobody had ever heard of Jesus then, right? 00:19:20.880 --> 00:19:22.880 You know, none of those events had happened. 00:19:23.039 --> 00:19:27.359 I mean, Roman crucifixion wasn't even invented at this point. 00:19:27.519 --> 00:19:28.000 That's true. 00:19:28.160 --> 00:19:40.319 And he's describing all of these things 700 years before it happens, and he sees something that the priests serving in the temple haven't even quite seen yet, that the Lamb is going to be a man. 00:19:41.039 --> 00:19:50.559 And then you fast forward 700 years, and then there's JB, I called him John the Baptist in the Jordan Valley, and there's people all over the place. 00:19:50.720 --> 00:19:55.920 He's he's teaching, he's baptizing the people, the religious leaders come out, they're asking them all these questions. 00:19:56.160 --> 00:20:10.640 And then he sees Jesus, his cousin, Yeshua, walking by, and every thread that we just traced, Eden, Moriah, Egypt, uh, Numbers, Isaiah, it all comes down here into this one moment. 00:20:10.880 --> 00:20:15.839 Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. 00:20:16.240 --> 00:20:30.480 So John the Baptist had to be pretty studied in his Old Testament prophets and uh to understand who he was uh making the way for, and and called him by name, the Lamb, the Lamb. 00:20:30.799 --> 00:20:32.799 And not a lamb, the Lamb, right?
