I'm your host, Oscar, and this is episode 333. Thank you everybody for joining me today. It is, of course, my greatest pleasure to be speaking with you all. I am so, so excited for this episode because we have officially finished season two, and we're gonna be doing some wrap-up today. We're gonna discuss some of the things we learned, some of the goals we set, and if we hit them, and some uh exciting stuff for season three. So this episode is definitely gonna be jam-packed with some pretty uh awesome stuff. So definitely stick around if you want to hear it all. The goals we set for season two

So I want to start this episode by talking about the goals that we set for season two, all the way at the very beginning of the season in episode one. So we set three goals. I'm gonna talk about how, uh if, you know, if we achieve them, and if so, how to, you know, to what extent and what growth do we still have in those departments. So the very first goal that we set is we want to explore Hogwarts, you know, the history, the actual castle. We want to learn more about Hogwarts. And truth be told, if there's one goal that I think we could have developed more, I think it's this one. Because I think it's just hard to build in uh that time to explore Hogwarts, because in in you know, the episodes that that that we're making, you know, I don't want to spend time talking about the their their exploration of the castle. I think that's kind of implied. So I think if this, you know, if if our if our version was made into a reality, I think what I would want to see is that that exploration kind of like already there, you know, like there there really isn't this this idea that they have to, you know, make specific points in in each episode to explore the castle. So that's why I'm not, you know, I'm just not sure if it would be achieved or not. But of course, this is our version, so I I would say uh that it it definitely does get explored extensively. So hopefully that uh will be achieved physically. But in terms of history, honestly, I think this is a really good season for history. I think that it it definitely came across, especially because this is the chamber of secrets. I mean, this is, you know, an artifact of Hogwarts' history. And whether we know it or not, it is definitely a lesson in the history of the castle. Because though, you know, we may have a scene, like in the books, like in the films, where we, you know, uh a professor explains the whole history of the chamber, you know, the legends, the rumors, all this, uh, all that the times it's been opened. Maybe we'll be hopefully, I guess, we will have that a time where someone will explain it to us. But even without that, I think I hopefully made it very clear that we should still feel the age uh when we are in the chamber in these last few episodes, you know, when we are really exploring the the depths of this place, even if you know we aren't getting the names and the dates right there. Hopefully, we still feel the age and we feel the time that it's been there. I think that would that's a that's a really good uh way of of going about it. So I think for for this goal, I think we did really well. I think we I think we did really well. But of course, there's always room to grow, always. And there is absolutely uh we have we're gonna have many more chances throughout this series to really make sure uh that that this uh is is continuing to to change and evolve. And I think a specific way that can happen is with learning just more about um the history of the castle. I think that's gonna naturally happen, but I think it should happen uh in in more specific ways. Because of course, this the you know the point of the of these of this whole TV show is to expand our world, it's to help us learn more about you know all this. So something that came to my mind, for example, was like when we have the Tri-Wizard Tournament, maybe we spend, you know, a class learning about the history of the Tri-Wizard tournament. Like something like that, you know, something that is that that that is applicable to the moment, but is also you know giving us that added perspective. Because a lot of times the history is implied. Like, for example, if we continue with the example of the Tri-Wizard Tournament, we have definitely heard that you know it's been happening for a while, but then it got discontinued because people were you know getting hurt, and it's you know, so so like we get that, and we from that we can you know glean that yes, it's probably been happening for a long time, you know, and it's probably this this it's this very well-known thing, and it's a big deal that's coming back. So we definitely have that gravitas without the history, but still, if we could go into this tournament knowing the legacy, I think that could be something that's that that's really exciting. So, that, for example, is a really cool thing. I'm also thinking uh for next season, I mean, we're gonna be talking a lot about Ascaban and history. If if if we're talking about history, I would love to talk about history of Azkaban. So I think that that's an example of like, you know, the history of the magical world, not necessarily Hogwarts, but they're probably very strongly related in some way. Like maybe, you know, the um Azkaban and Hogwarts were being built around the same time. Like maybe that's a good connection to make. So that could maybe even give us another, uh, you know, another layer to the relationship between, you know, Sirius and and the castle. Like he's, you know, like he's using these two pillars of of magical society to kind of go, you know, as as like a go-between. Like that could give us some more perspective on his journey. And then as there are further breakouts, we could kind of draw that line even clearer. So there are those moments like that where the I think what hopefully we will find is that the history of the castle is very much the history of the wizarding world. And I think, you know, like like we explored in our very first episode of this of this whole show was was the history of of Hollywoods, you know, was this castle being built? And that is such a cool idea that we can witness the castle being built. And and then, of course, now I'm asking the questions of like, well, what was happening around that time? You know, is that really the the the age of the formation of the wizarding world? Like, is this because of course, you know, the the uh population was was much lower back then, you know, about a thousand years ago. So maybe the wizarding you know community was was more scattered, maybe there wasn't really a centralized way of going about it. I mean, that long ago, there really weren't many centralized states anyway. So it's interesting to think that you know the the history of Hogwarts could also be the history of like civilization, kind of modern, like the birth of modern uh government. Like that's something that we could even you know think about for like the mugle world too. So I think the history of Hogwarts is important, and I think that is really a good place where we can begin to continue exploring. And this is one of those, this is I think an area that I'm most excited about because it's really one that we didn't really get. In the films and the books, of course, we know that Hogwarts has a history and it has a book, you know, written all about it, and it's I'm sure it's an interesting book. I would certainly love to read it, but we just we don't get the content of that book. And though I don't want, you know, a a lecture on this, I want to see what that history of Hogwarts means for us. You know, how does that affect the characters and how does that affect the story? So I think that as our first goal is is we are well on the way to making sure that that goal is achieved, and for season three, I am absolutely looking forward to that. And of course, addition to any new goals, Wink Wink, we might set uh next week. So, our second goal that we set is to develop relationships, and this is a pretty basic one because the truth is I think the season would be pretty dull without uh developing relationships, and for that reason, I think it is almost impossible to say that we did not develop relationships. I think we absolutely did, we absolutely made a lot of progress in that department, and um I mean I can't even like claim credit for that. Like it's just it just happens naturally. I think that's that's one of those goals that I just want to make sure we have our head, you know, in the right space here. Because if there was a situation in which, you know, we could, you know, we were sitting here, and I was wondering, like, did we do that? I think the whole season is kind of like, well, what was the whole season about then? You know, I think the whole story is about relationships. That's what every story is about. That's what every everything is about relationships. And I think that is is absolutely the case with Harry Potter, and that's absolutely what we did, absolutely what we explored in season two. But I could sing the praises to the to the mountaintops of of of how awesome we are about uh you know talking about relationships, but what I really want to do is get into the specifics. So what did we really do? Well, one of the most important relationships, and one of the ones that I think we definitely explored much deeper in uh this season, and hopefully, of course, we will uh continue to evolve, is the relationship between Harry and Dumbledore. This is a back and forth that is kind of gonna define Harry's life, uh, which is strange to think, and especially his journey as the uh the pursuit of horror cruxes continues. The one-way street of information is kind of a hallmark of the uh relationship, and that's an I mean on full display here. I'm thinking of especially like when uh Dumbledore got the diary, of course. He didn't tell Harry anything, you know, of course not, because this is something that Dumbledore wants to keep under wraps that he that Dumbledore knows is important, uh that that he can never, you know, really share. So I think that is a good example of this whole idea that, you know, Dumbledore has this has this plan for Harry, Dumbledore's mischievous plan, but still he just can't share the details. And I think that is an interesting thing here. And that again, what I like, like I said, it defines their relationship. So, for better or for worse, we are learning more about Dumbledore. And I mean, it's an interesting concept. I think that, like, of course, Dumbledore's taught is this like hero. You know, he is the hero of Hogwarts, he saved Harry, he's ruling the castle, you know, he's gentle, he's kind, he's intelligent, like whatever it is, he's perfect. But I like the idea of as the story goes on, we realize just how imperfect he is. I think that is a really great way of developing his character. And though it's disappointing, you know, to kind of have that realization that maybe Dumbledore isn't perfect, I think there's still such a there's a a valley, there's there's a canyon of of space here to develop his character, and I am so ready to fill that. And I think filling it with, you know, talking about how awesome he is, it might not it might not quite give us that that that perspective that I think we would value the most about him. So the relationship between Harry and Dumbledore, I think, absolutely grew here. And I mean, quickly, of course, I'll mention the trio. I think this is a very this is a bonding experience for sure. And then especially like after Harry and Ron made it out of the chamber and got, you know, uh Hermione, uh, you know, became unpetrified, like that's a that's a very solidifying moment for their friendship. So I am I am very impressed with that, and I am I am hopeful that that will continue to expand. Of course, I don't think we even have to mention, like, that's not even a goalie I just said, because of course that's just gonna happen. Like, we are pretty much guaranteed that they are gonna get uh closer and closer. So I am happy to just put a put a check mark on that. But I think there's another relationship here that we should uh mention here, and that is between Ginny and Harry. This is the first book that Ginny is really in. You know, she uh has she saw Harry off at the platform in uh the uh Philosopher's Stone, but now she is truly a character. She is at Hogwarts, and she is finally in the mix. And though it is not exactly a, you know, it's not like very uh material at this point, I guess that's that that's that's what I'm trying to say. It's not like they they have a very material relationship, but still we can be like slowly begin to see that they are, you know, they are interacting and they have had conversations through throughout this this uh season. And of course, Harry, you know, did Ginny a solid, you could say, and kind of saved her, saved her life. So we can see that they are beginning to kind of realize each other, I guess is a good way of putting it, and that realization will only continue, that's for sure, uh, as the story progresses. So that is something that I am very hopeful for, uh, and I am absolutely looking forward to seeing it. Uh, but there is one final relationship that I want to see, and that is, of course, Ron and Hermione. And that is along a similar line. And it's funny, the other day I was thinking, like, uh, of course, uh, I mean, I guess maybe it wasn't as obvious, but like Dan uh and Rupert and Emma, when they were cast, they didn't really know like the the true ending to their characters because uh, you know, as they were filming though the all the books weren't weren't yet uh published. But like, for example, like uh Rupert and Emma didn't exactly, you know, 100% know that they were gonna be, you know, end up together at the end. So that's an interesting idea. But it's now strange to think that these, you know, the uh two two kids that they cast, Arabella Stanton and Alistair Stout, they are they know that they're gonna end up, you know, together, and that that's kind of a relationship that they have to develop soon. They have they have to start going now. And that is an idea that I definitely want to see. I mean, but here's the thing, here's the thing. It can't be like too obvious because they have to go through, you know, the trials and tribulations that lead them to each other, I guess you could say. I don't want the relationship to be just like romantic and then they just keep it up. Like I feel like that would kind of take take the you know the the real magic out of it. But Ronander Mione have a really funny relationship, honestly, because you know they are they're kind of opposites, and they are almost like the devil and angel on Harry's shoulder, and I think that is definitely what I want to see. Like, I want to see them uh fighting and kind of dis disagreeing and then like saying, like, I'm not talking to you for the rest of the day, or like, you know, something like whatever, whatever that might be, like things like that. That's what I really want to see because it shows that they are, you know, they they are a good match for each other. And although that is something that we will really begin to explore later on, I want to see that yes, they fight, yes they do, but it it's but it's because they, you know, they they can stand up to one another, like they are a good fit, and I think that is what I want to really see. So relationships absolutely I think went went very well in this season. In terms of furthering those those relationships, uh, truth be told, I think there is an absolutely perfect way of doing that, and it is without exploring the relationship at all and exploring the character. Because one some of the most interesting relationships, I mean, in general, you know, in stories, are between people who we understand. It's really hard to see two people and not really know who they are, what they stand for, and then just kind of already be invested. Like it's it's it's not this automatic thing. Like, if if a story is telling us to be invested in two people, we can do it, like we can, you know, put our faith in them, but it's but but we we won't really care. We don't really care for them. So that's what I want to really go go into is I want to learn more about them, and that's just backstory, you know. We we we see them in a you know, I think, you know, like a good example of like seeing them when they're down. Like that's a really uh interesting way of looking at a person. It's really easy to see someone and you know make judgments on when they are you know out and about and full of energy and you know surrounded by their friends, but the moment when they are truly alone with their thoughts, like that's a really interesting way of looking at a story. So things like that, that's what I would really want to see. Uh, and that is, I think, something that would I think really benefit us. So, but I mean, obviously, obviously, we are hopefully gonna get a ton more of that. So, again, that's not really something that I have to force in. I think the history of uh, you know, back backstories of characters is always an an interesting part of any story. So that is gonna be a lot of fun. And there is one last goal that I set, and I am really excited about this one, and that is begin the evolution of Voldemort, to really begin to introduce him as a character, begin his journey, and boy, oh boy, I think we did this super, super well. And I love our final few scenes. I love the memories that we had throughout, and I absolutely love the you know demise of Tom Riddle at the end and the promise that he is not truly gone. Of course, we don't know, we don't know anything, but we do know that Voldemort is not gone forever. And it's that promise that really puts the gears into motion. Of course, we met Voldemort in season one because he wasn't the back of Croll's head and we talked to him and all that, you know, and that's definitely him. So I'm not I'm not saying that, you know, this is the first time we're we're we're really meeting him. But he was different then, and we didn't really see him in that form ever again. I think that's probably good. And he is very weak and he can't really, you know, he's just he's not Voldemort. He's not Lord, you know, he's not the dark lord, he's just kind of like a dude at that point. And that's pretty scary for sure, because he definitely has a he is he is a dude with an agenda, but he doesn't he doesn't have the power to carry that agenda out. But seeing someone like like Riddle, yes, of course he's a memory. Uh, I don't know what the rules are for memories, but it seems like he can't really like you know truly affect things in in in the real world. His his true power is you know drawing people in like he did with Ginny, and uh, you know, uh of course he is a horcrux, so he has those those powers. And it is scary for sure to see that happen in real time. Of course, we yeah, that's that's what we what we witnessed with with with Ginny. But I think there is definitely a, you know, it's it's kind of the perfect way of setting him up because we see his potential, but but we don't see the true effects of his of his reign. Because Woldemort himself is still far away and kind of uh you know, still gathering his power and beginning to build himself back up again. But this is this is like a shadow of of who he was. You know, this is showing us who he could be. And that's if anything scarier than seeing him in a weakened state, because it's telling us that he is absolutely on the horizon. And knowing that he is gonna come back, just a few short short books away, I think it's important that we see that. So I think Riddle is a really interesting character that we absolutely uh had a had a really interesting look at. So I think in terms of uh beginning Voldemort's true arc, I think we did that pretty well. I'm honestly very happy with that. And next season's gonna be an interesting one because Voldemort isn't really involved, and I think that's that's for good reason. And if you kind of zoom out here, looking at the evolution of Voldemort as as a character, I'm kind of glad that the first time we truly see him is when he is actually back, you know, when he when he actually returns. I think that is a really, really cool thing. Because think about it, in the first season we had him as like a shat like he was on the back of someone's head, you know, he was he was just this like you know, uh a slice of of his true self. And then in the second season, you know, he has the the most corporeal version of himself we see is is a memory, is this, you know, is is riddle in the diary. We can begin to see, you know, his true potential. And then in the First of Ask Man, in the third season, we see his servants, you know, we see the people who are who are are are under him, we see how powerful they are, how easily they can get in into the castle, and how how readily they can change the events of the Wizarding World. So we're kind of building this up. We're saying that like even when he's not here, he still can make this huge impact. So when we eventually you know hit the ground running in the graveyard, in the in the goblet of fire, we can finally appreciate who he really is. So this is gonna be a really important point here. And I want to continue to build this world around him. It's like we're we're we're kind of building this you know amazing, huge uh piece of piece of construction, and we're we're saving the last most important piece for last. And the second we put that piece in, it's like the whole thing will come together. That's kind of what I want to do here. And of course, that final piece is Voldemort's return, and the rest of the structure is all of those things we just mentioned, this this huge build up to him. So I think we did a really nice build up, we continued it, but if if we can really knock season three out of the park with drawing Sirius Black as this, you know, this this this villain who is serving Voldemort, I think we would we would do ourselves really well. So our goals are really important. We will set more goals next week for sure. Uh but there are a few more things, a few more little points I want to make about this season before we end this episode. So uh with that, let's move on.

The power of dark magic

Real quick, I want to mention the power of dark magic. That is something that we definitely got a little more into here. But what I want to make clear is this season should absolutely let us know that dark magic exists. The first season is full of sparkles and Christmas and levitating, and it's so fun and magical. This season we get like the dark secret dungeon. And it's less obvious that the magical elements here are truly dark magic. I think the idea of like this this this distinction of dark magic and you know light magic, I guess I don't know what the what what the name is for that, that distinction only becomes truly. Clear once we get Death Eaters in the Goblet of Fire and especially into the uh Order of the Phoenix. So, what I'm thinking is I want that distinction much earlier because this whole idea of dark magic is going to be a big part of Sirius Black's character. And that is definitely something that we need to have have developed here. And I don't know really how to do it, is the problem. Because I think there is there are a lot of opportunities to show us that it really exists, but not a ton. So here's what I'm thinking. Here's what I'm thinking. One of the most uh one of the best ways that I think that it could happen is with Ginny. Because we see that Ginny is being kind of drawn in. You know, she is she is kind of being taken hostage almost in her own body. Uh, you know, to Riddles really casting his spell, you know, on her, literally. And I think that is a key uh point to track here when it comes to dark magic. Because when she eventually is taken down into the chamber, in the film, she's just kind of like lying there, like, and she does, she does not look good, that's for sure. Like she's super pale, and that's how she's also described in the book, but I think there's a good opportunity here to see some kind of like like cloud, like some kind of black cloud. Maybe it's like it's like drawing something out of her. Like we can't really, like, we can't really make it out, but sh there is something that is being drawn out of her. And I don't know, I was trying to decide, like, is that the best way? Because another thought I had is like maybe she's floating. Like, like, like maybe she's she's floating in the air, and that would be so the good news with with with uh well I guess the upsides with those two is that it's like instantly we see that there is magic happening. And knowing not only the context, but seeing her, seeing how pale she is and how how she's you know she she's unconscious, like that should tell us that it is not good news, you know, what is what is going on. So I think that is a good opportunity. And if I had to choose one, I think it's a little bit, I don't know, because what I don't want to do is, you know, make this more dramatic than it has to be. I think if she was floating like upright, kind of like um Katie Bell, the whole Katie Bell thing in the uh Half-Blood Prince when Malfoy gives her the cursed necklace to bring up to Dumbledore and she accidentally touches it and then she floats up in the air, and like that is definitely scary because she's then on the ground like getting like tossed around. Like that was clearly dark magic, but that was of course after we made the distinction, so it's not like we had to guess what it was. That was obvious. But that's not exactly what this is because what what I want this to be, you know, with whole with Ginny's whole situation is that this is a much more passive process. Ginny isn't like being forcibly anything, like this this has been happening the whole year. And maybe that's kind of like a a uh an important note to make is that Ginny should kind of progressively be getting worse and worse. Like Ginny, Ginny's got like she's getting paler and like she can't like keep her words together, like things like that that like Whittle's riddle is drawing the life out of her. But it's the most obvious at this point. So I think floating is maybe the best way of going about it because it's the most striking. But in terms of like a position, I don't really think like the arms outstretched, like, like, like, you know, that might not be the best because it's again it's very dramatic. And we and we uh do get that later. Maybe just like like lying down, like like exactly like she was, just kind of like floating, you know, like five feet off the ground, something like that. Like maybe just something like that, like she could almost be sleeping, like that's a good, you know, detail. So it's things like that that I really want to have explored here uh because I want to build that fear, especially with Sirius Black. I mean, fear, we've we've been talking about fear for a long time and how this is not a very scary series, but I want to feel the intensity, and that is a good way of doing that. Dementors, however, are I think should genuinely be like a little like, oh like gosh, like that's that's kind of awful. Especially with the scene like on the train in in the Prisoner of Asculan where the it goes silent and we see the cloud of the Dementor, like things like that. That's what I want to be building up towards. And I want the suspense of knowing Series Black is out there. That's what I want to be really afraid of. So there are some super, super cool opportunities there, and I can't wait to talk about them. Oh my gosh, I am already so excited to talk about Dementors of Series Black and all this dark stuff that's gonna be going on in the next season. So that is why I really want to make clear that dark magic exists and that it is truly what the uh characters are all fighting against. So that is a big detail that I want to make sure is clear. Uh, but there's one more thing I want to discuss, so let's move

Harry and Dumbledore

on. The last thing I want to quickly mention is Harry and Dumbledore. We briefly discussed their relationship a few minutes ago, but there are a few things I want to clarify, especially going into season three. And that is, one, Dumbledore is pulling the strings. And I, though it's not obvious from the beginning, I want to make that clear. But not necessarily obvious, and there is a distinct difference there. We shouldn't be, you know, going through every beat of the story thinking, oh my gosh, Dumbledore clearly is controlling everything. That's not what I want to be thinking. But I want to see maybe a few moments where Dumbledore is kind of, you know, putting his thumb on the scale. Because he has a say in what goes on in the wizarding world. That we know is is true. But it's how he uses that say that I think really matters, and that is really what I want to be uh be witnessing here, especially as Sirius Black begins to threaten the castle. So that is for sure something that I want to explore. But it's Dumbledore's control in relation to the second thing that I want to mention, which is Harry has a deep dark past, and maybe he doesn't even know it. Like, that's another thing that I want to make clear here. Harry's relationship to his parents, Harry's subsequent relationship with Voldemort, and his pursuit of this, you know, of of of the defeat of all evil, that's the d that's the driving force for everything. And we get flashes of that in the first season for sure, but the second season is kind of void uh in terms of Harry's past, because Riddle is really the one who we explore in terms of, you know, the backstory to characters. So Riddle is really the one who we learn more the the, you know, learn the most about and learn uh the most in terms of you know what his plans are. But with Harry, we don't really know that. So I want to I want to begin to look at the story through the lens of Dumbledore's control of ev of you know Harry's actions and the dangers of of the castle and of the greater Risening World in relation to Harry's past and maybe even most importantly, Harry's future. He has a lot of trials ahead, and Dumbledore knows that. And if there's any way to avoid it, Dumbledore would probably do it. But unfortunately, there is no way around what has uh what what is coming Harry's way, and that is what I really want to uh begin to explore. So that is the final thing that I wanted to mention, and that is officially a wrap on season two. Wow, these things are going by so fast. I will say, uh we I'm not sure if our schedule will allow for a one-to-one episode schedule now, considering the TV show is coming out uh next Christmas. So just as a heads up, I think, especially because our seasons are gonna get longer. Next season I'm planning ten episodes. Uh season after that, maybe twelve, and then I'm thinking a fifteen uh for the last few, you know, so we are definitely not gonna have time, unfortunately, to do a one-to-one episode, meaning, you know, first episode is one, the second episode is two. So we might be doing uh bunches, depending on how the story goes. So just to give you a heads up, that is my plan. Because I want to make sure we get to every single uh beat of the story before uh the uh TV show comes out. My my dream is to have uh Tea Leave season seven, episode 15, on like December 24th or whatever, like like the uh final Saturday or uh final Sunday before the release, and then that very next day you can listen to that episode and the very next day go into it. Like uh anyway, so that's that's that's what I'm hoping for that. But I hope you enjoyed this episode in any case. Before we get to season seven, we have a lot of fun things in between.
