Show Notes

In a review of the previous episode, Henry discusses the quote from Isaiah 7:6.  He then proceeds with the story of the healing of a Gentile woman’s daughter and explains where the event occurred in relation to Palestine.  The meaning of the word unclean is considered.  The difference between a demon and an unclean spirit is discussed.  Our contemporary views of healing in comparison to those of biblical times are considered as are the apparent racial overtones in the story.  The healing of the deaf mute is read, and Henry explains the challenges of those who are deaf from birth.  The translation of the phrase “be open” is explored and what implications that has for the intended audience of the Gospel of Mark.  The name for the Greek version of the Bible, the Septuagint, is considered.  Discussions ensued over the relationship between the Septuagint, the original Hebrew, and the King James Versions of scripture. The second miracle of the loaves and fishes is read.  A review of the relevance of numbers in the parables is discussed.  The story where the pharisees ask for a miracle is read as is the event where Jesus chides the disciples for not understanding.  Henry explains other meanings of the word “yeast” and how it does not put the pharisees in a particularly good light.

The following is a glossary of some of the words examined in this session…

Akathartos – unclean, without relationship to God.

Septuagint < Latin septuaginta = 70 = The translation of the Old Testament into Greek by a legendary 70 Jewish scholars.

Zumē – yeast, mold
