From Widowed to Remarried, with Stepkids. A Stepmom's Story From Heartache to Victory Featuring Wanda Patrick.

Blending is hard. It can take a little longer to understand that our kids and stepkids are struggling in similar ways we struggle; the challenges they face are somewhat similar to our own.

Meet Wanda Patrick. Wanda understands the challenges single parents and stepparents face. When her husband died, leaving her with two young children to raise alone, she didn't get a break between grieving and meeting the demands of single parenting; she was thrown into a world of heavy, emotional, physical, social, and financial demands. 
When Wanda remarried, she greatly underestimated the difficulty of blending families and bonding with three teenagers. She believed if she was good to her husband's children and her husband was good to her children, they would accept each other and enjoy blending their families. But you know where I'm going with this--Wanda was wrong.

How to protect your heart in the midst of stepfamily hurt:

1. Acknowledge the hurt is real.  
2. Imagine yourself hovering in a helicopter.  Check out the view - what challenges are your kids facing as they blend?
3. Purposeful prayer with your partner.  Unity in prayer with your mate is the most powerful weapon you have to combat the hurt.
4. Get curious about the emotional response - experience anger as a clue that this moment, this relationship matters (see episode #55 for how to manage your emotions)
5.  Practice forgiveness.  God will honor your repentant heart.
6. Ask for help! Seek Coaches, counselors, therapists, & other stepfamily resources.
