Pride Music Special Kickoff

Brett

You're listening to Queer Voices, a radio show and a podcast that has been a outlet for the LGBTQIA Plus community since the 70s. So the rain may have postponed our big parade this year, but we here at Queer Voices are carrying on the Pride Celebration all June long. Hey, it's our month after all, and this is the last week of it. I'm Brett Cullum, and today we're going all music for a change in honor of Pride. Queer Voices start now.

Rod Stewart Tells Georgie’s Story

Brett

Let's start with someone few people know is such a strong ally. Rod Stewart wrote and released The Killing of Georgie parts one and two in 1976. And it tells a true story about a friend of his who was stabbed to death in 1974. Then we have Eraser's 1987 Hideaway from their album Circus, which became one of the definitive songs about coming out.

George boy, a scare I can nothing more or nothing less. The kindest guy I ever knew. His mother's tears fell in vain the afternoon. George tried to explain that he needed love like all the red. Car says there must be a mistake. How can my son not be straight? After all I've said and done for him Leaving home on a greyhound bus, cast out by the ones he loves, a bit too of these gay days, it seems Georgie went to New Yorktown where he quickly settled down and soon became the toast of the great white wave. Accepted by Manhattan to leave and all the places that were she. No party was complete without George. Along the Boulevard T cruise and all the old Queens blue refuse. Everybody loved Georgie Boy The last time I saw George alive was in the summer of 75. He said he was in love. I said I'm pleased. George attended the opening night of another Broadway hype with split before the final curtain fell. Deciding to take a shock up home. Arm and only meant no roll. A gentle breeze blew down Fifth Avenue. To roll some innocent, pass a by the beautiful fight. Screams running out in the night. George's head in a sidewalk called a stone. A little kid, a switchblade knife. He did not intend to take his life. He just pushed his luck a little too far that night. A crowd gathered, the police came. An ambulance screamed to a halt. Don't get to third preferred. George is live and dead there. But I ask, who really cares? George once said to me, and I quote, he said, never wait or hesitate. Get in kids before it's too late. You may never get another chance. Cause use a mask, but it don't last. Live it long and live at fast. George he wants a friend of mine.

SPEAKER_16

And don't be afraid. You don't have to hide away. But he was rejected by the people that he came for. It's not what they expected, but he could not keep it secret anymore.

SPEAKER_15

Wait to find the child. I can feel my soul ascending. I'm on my way. Can't stop me now. And you can never say What have you done today? So make you feel proud. What have you done today? Don't make you feel proud. You could be some many people. If you make that grab for Freedom. What have you done today? Don't make you feel prouder. So I stand out of the ordinary. I can feel my soul the same name. I'm on my way. Can't stop me now. You can do the same. What have you done today? Don't make you feel proud. You never to let you cry. What have you done today? Brett

Of course that was Heather Small with Crowd. The song that was released in 2000, written before the Olympics that summer, but became an official album as a theme song for Queer Smoke in the United States. Let's move now into David Audio Cry in the Name of Love, which features a ton of queer positive artists covering you two.

SPEAKER_15

One man. Take your prize.

SPEAKER_13

Till the day I finally saw the light. Wish I was in gay. Wish I was and gay. I don't wish I was and gay no more. Shut that closet door.

SPEAKER_11

And I don't wish I was in gay no more. Preacher used to tell me I was headed straight to hell. Something that I tried but couldn't change.

SPEAKER_13

Holy revelation I've been saved. Wish I wasn't gay. Wish I wasn't gay. I don't wish I wasn't gay no more. We born I don't wish I wasn't gay no more.

SPEAKER_15

Thought that I was close with no end inside. Till I found my frozen family tree. Kitty Crane of Doctors is a friend of mine.

SPEAKER_13

Some cheers shoots queers like you and me. Wish I wasn't gay. Wish I wasn't gay. I don't wish I was gay.

SPEAKER_15

I can see the sadness in your eyes.

SPEAKER_13

You've been trying to hide what's left behind.

SPEAKER_15

They say it's darkest before the dawn. But you've been smiling for so long. Thousand teardrops can't be wrong. I can tell you're sad boy just like me. On the run from a losing game. Just batch your eyes, baby, let me feel my hand. I don't want you to be afraid. Let me see you cry. Come on, baby. I want you to be a brain. Come on, baby cry. Come on, baby cry. Come on, baby.

Brett

SPEAKER_04

Madonna I got something I wanna talk about. Don't comment on my ideas. I don't want your judgment on your expectations. Don't want me a good boy. Your vision of me is a cute joy. I know everybody's a buried. Don't try to drop me out. Don't try to distract me with numbers. I did it all for that. You cannot take me back. But you cannot take me down.

unknown

Don't rely on my mouth. All my discretion. I have a confession.

SPEAKER_04

Don't get them up, beat for action, beat back I know where the bodies are buried. Don't try to make Don't try to destroy Bring it to Freder. You've got something to say about it. Don't wanna come from my eyes. Always be the price.

SPEAKER_15

Don't wanna hell a confession of the church.

SPEAKER_04

But dear for the Will, you can take me.

SPEAKER_12

They blowin' all around me. It's flowing through my body. I can feel it. I can feel it. Don't know if I'm awake or dreamin'. There must be something in here. But time is disappearing. This moment's never leaving. I can feel it. I can feel it. You got discussed, enough another can stop it.

SPEAKER_15

It's crazy, I'm falling. I don't know what else to call it.

SPEAKER_04

Then we've done together. End up the day could be better.

SPEAKER_12

Tomorrow, don't matter. Make the night us together. So do we do Free Fall, get some new emotion? I swear there's diamonds in your eyes. Come hold me like you mean it. Don't wanna keep this secret. Can you feel it? My heart beat it. You make me wanna do this while things good touches, supernatural. Oh, I give I just feel it. I'm floating through the ceiling. Can you feel it? I can feel it. Oh you got this body, and nothing all I can stop it.

SPEAKER_10

SPEAKER_10

SPEAKER_04

I want the world to know. I got to let it show up for it, come on, for now, got to let show.

SPEAKER_10

I want to watch you know that you let me show me that.

SPEAKER_15

Yesterday

Love Loss And The AIDS Shadow

SPEAKER_15

you came to lift me straw and grids of earth. Today I will less than a shadow to all just one of voice and heart. Tomorrow leave the windows open as fear grows. Please hold me in your arms. Won't you help me if you can to shake this anger and need your gentle hands to keep me calm? Cause I never thought I'd lose. I only thought I'd win. I never dreamed I'd flee. I can't believe you love me. I never thought you'd come. I guess I've misjudged love between a father and his son. Things we never said come together, the hidden truth no longer haunting me. Tonight we touched on the things that were never spoken that kind of understanding sets me free Cause I never thought I'd lose. I always thought I'd win. I never dreamed I'd feel beneath my skin. I can't believe you love me. I never thought you hung. I guess I must just love between a father. You can't be long. Do you be life out of love? I can feel some same signs saying. I really don't think strong enough. What am I supposed to do? Sit around and wait for you when I can't do that. It takes time to move on. It takes love to feel strong. Maybe I'm too good for you to love. Do you believe in life after love? I can feel some things inside you say. I really don't think strong enough. Do you believe in love after love? I can feel some things I say. The minute I'm thinking strong enough love. And I know that I'll get through this. I don't need you anymore. I don't need you anymore. I don't need you anymore. I don't need you anymore. Do you believe I belong? I can feel something inside me, say. I really don't think you're strong enough.

unknown

Do you believe I love?

SPEAKER_15

I can feel something inside me say. I really don't think you're strong enough. Do you believe in life after love?
