Why Options Create Decision Fatigue
Jean Miller, HostYou're listening to the Art of Homeschooling Podcast, where we help parents cultivate creativity and connection at home. I'm your host, Jean Miller, and here on this podcast, you'll find stories and inspiration to bring you the confidence you need to make homeschooling work for your family. Let's begin. There’s a moment that almost every homeschooling parent experiences. You’re sitting at the table…maybe with a stack of curriculum, a half-finished plan, or 17 tabs open on your computer…and you think: “I just need to figure this out.” So you start searching. New curriculum, new planner, new daily rhythm or routine, a better system. Because it feels like the problems
Jean Miller, Hostyou just haven't found the right thing yet.
Jean Miller, HostBut what if that's not actually the problem? What if the issue isn't that you need a new system, but that you don't yet have a filter for making decisions?
You Need A Filter + 3 Filters to Try
Filter One: The Child
Filter Two: The Season
Filter Three: Your Capacity
Holistic Homeschooling Starter Kit
Jean Miller, HostI'm so glad you're listening in. Welcome to the Art of Homeschooling Podcast, where I help homeschooling parents create a personalized plan that's simple, creative, and doable so you can homeschool with confidence. And today we're talking all about how to escape the land of overwhelm and start to be more intentional by creating decision-making filters. Because you don't need a new system, you just need a better filter. Here's why more options equal more overwhelm. We're living in a time where there are more homeschool resources than ever before. And on the surface, that sounds like a gift, right? That sounds great. But in reality, it often leads to decision fatigue, second guessing ourselves, and that constant feeling of, am I doing the right thing? Because when everything looks like a good option, it's almost impossible to choose with confidence. So instead, we bounce from one curriculum to another, from one idea to the next, from one plan to starting over again and again. Not because we're doing anything wrong, but because we're trying to make decisions without a clear lens. Here's the shift that changes everything. You do not need a better system. You need a filter. And a filter is what helps you decide what to say yes to, what to ignore, what actually fits your child, and what just looks good on someone else's Instagram feed. Without a filter, everything feels equally important. But with a filter, things get clearer faster. And this is where homeschooling starts to feel a little bit lighter, more intentional, more aligned, and a lot less overwhelming. So what is a filter? Well, it's not complicated, and it's definitely not another rigid framework. It's just a way of seeing your path forward. It's a way of asking yourself questions that will help guide you on a path to making a decision. Here are three simple filters you can start using right away. Number one, the child filter. Instead of asking, is this a good curriculum? Ask, is this right for my child right now? Their energy, their interests, their readiness. This is where Waldorf Homeschooling really shines because we're always coming back to the child. We're invited to look at the child before us and bring them what they need to help them make progress. So the question, is this a good curriculum? Almost doesn't even matter. It might be good for someone else right now. It might be good generally, but when you can ask, is this right for my child right now? Then you will really gain some clarity. Number two, the season filter. Not every season is meant for doing more. Spring, especially, tends to bring us this urge to start fresh, which sometimes leads to a sense of panic. Like, I need to finish everything before the end of the year. But what if this season is actually asking for more spaciousness, more movement, more time outside, more simplicity? Tuning into the growth your child is making this year is the best place to start. Remember, not all learning is visible on the outside, but we can see signs of the progress our child is making and look at the year as a whole. Your homeschool doesn't need to look the same in March as it did in October, and you definitely don't need to create something new right now. Number three, the capacity filter. This is a big one. Ask, what do I realistically have the capacity for right now as a homeschooling parent? Not your ideal self, not what you wish you could do, but what's actually doable in your real everyday life right now. Because a beautiful plan that you can't sustain is not supportive to you. It actually makes us feel inadequate. And that's not what we're after. We want to match our capacity to the plan so that we can show up for our children every day in a way that feels doable. When you start using a filter, such as one of the three I've mentioned here, something shifts. You stop chasing, you stop second-guessing every decision, you stop feeling like you're behind, you stop comparing yourself to other homeschoolers, and instead you begin to trust yourself. You start shaping your homeschool instead of trying to follow someone else's. And this is where things start to feel simpler, more creative, more like your family.

Jean Miller, HostIf you want a reminder of these three filters, check out the show notes at www.artofomeschooling.com/episode 254. You'll find a recap of this episode there. We would also love to hear from you. There's a link over in those show notes to leave us a text message or voicemail about the show. Now, I want to share with you that this is exactly what the Holistic Homeschooling Starter Kit was created for. It's not about giving you another curriculum to follow. It's about helping you build your own filters so that you can take whatever resources you already have and use them in a way that actually works for you and your kiddos in this season of your homeschooling journey. So if you've been feeling stuck in that cycle of searching and searching, being tempted to start over, this is your next step. Inside the Starter Kit, you'll find a video training on how to bring it all together, a homeschool simplicity handbook, and a beautiful holistic planner to help you go from overwhelmed to intentional in your homeschool your way. And if you're craving not just understanding this, but actually experiencing it, that's what we do at the Summer Taproot Teacher Training. You don't just learn ideas, you experience lessons as if you were the child. You practice shaping the learning, you feel what it's like to create from a place of clarity, and you get to see what this might look like from a variety of perspectives because we have an entire team of experienced homeschooling mentors leading workshops. And there, something really clicks.

Jean Miller, HostSo today, if you're feeling overwhelmed, I invite you to pause, take a deep breath, and instead of asking, what should I do next? Try asking, which filter do I want to use to decide? Because you don't need more. You need clarity. And that changes everything.
