Terrence Real is the author of a book called Us. It is a book about relationships and how our minds work when we are interacting with other humans. He speaks of a part of us that is developed when we are younger that protects us in relationships. He calls it the Maladaptive Child Self. The opposite of that is the Wise Adult Self which is our higher self who is more emotionally mature.
