Defensive Backs Coach Keyshawn Kelly The Return to Texas. I'm the Pump Jacob Pumpus, and you're listening to the Texas Tiger Podcast on the ETBU Plus Network. Keyshawn Kelly, defensive backs coach in his first year at ETBU, has completely devoted his life to the game of football, and that devotion as a player and a coach has taken him all over the state as well as the country, making many stops while gaining experience and recognition along the way. But for Coach Kelly, the plan was always to return back home to Texas.

I'm originally from Corscount, Texas. Out of high school, I went to Texas State. I bounced back, went to a couple Jukeholes, ended up at Nelson University. I ended up graduating from there. I went to Texas West after that and I began my coaching career. My first two years at Texas West, we won conference. Then from there, this past spring, I went out to West Virginia and I went to Fermont State, a D2 program out there. I went there for a semester, corners coach out there. I was looking to get back to Texas and get close to my family. You know, looked around for some opportunities and I stumbled up on ETBU. That's just a little bit about the journey for me.

Kelly says that this school and staff has done a great job of making him feel part of the family since day one.

Rue has been perfect. He has been perfect. He kept gave me welcoming arms on as soon as I put up on the campus. So that's been good. Coach Brock has been good. Really, just the whole staff, we're we're pretty young, so we we can all relate to each other. So I think that's important. But the whole staff has been good welcoming me in. So it's been it's been great.
SPEAKER_01
Coach Kelly has already seen the DB room get closer together as a group and make some great adjustments on the fly during practice.
SPEAKER_00
The new guys are getting in and getting acclimated with the older guys. It's been great. I think we're headed in the right direction as far as like a team camaraderie. I think we're doing good in that area. So I'm super excited about what we got going ahead. So as of right now, we're making some little changes as far as like on the defense side of the ball, but they've been catching on to it well. And I think that's the biggest thing that I can say that I'm excited about. They're hitting the ground running and trying to learn it, making mistakes, but making them 100 miles an hour. I think that's all we can ask for as a staff. So I think right now we're in a good spot. We got some good stuff to build off on. So it's it's been great.
