The Short Pause

Dreams

Curt Harding

Are you still dreaming? In this episode, Curt encourages listeners to reconnect with their hopes and believe again.

Dreams
“I’m sick of following my dreams. I’m just going to ask them where they’re going… and hook up with them later.”
Hey, it’s Curt. Welcome back to The Short Pause.
That line’s from the late funnyman Mitch Hedberg.
It’s a great joke—but it raises a good question:

Have you grown tired of chasing your dreams?

Even as an optimist, I’ve felt this.
Most days, I’m mostly sunny—with a chance of something great happening.

Maybe that’s why I connected so well with my father-in-law.
He was a man of deep optimism.
Even after living through the Depression.
 Losing two wives.
 And outliving his son.
He got up. Dusted off. And moved forward.

One day I called just to say hi.
 He wasn’t home—
He was at an investing seminar.
 He was 94 years old.
 Now that’s optimism.

But let’s be honest... life isn’t mostly sunny.
It’s one storm after another rolling in, making things dark.
As amazing as life can be, it can steal our hope.
 Silence our dreams.
 We get disappointed.
 We lose people.
 Plans fall apart.
And before long, it feels safer not to dream at all.

Because dreaming—
It asks us to believe again.
 To risk again.

Maybe that’s what brought you here today.
 I’m asking you—
 Believe again.

Because I’m still dreaming.
About seeing another game in person.
 Another concert.
getting that next hug from a friend.
 Creating something new.
 Retiring.
 Picking up a hobby.
 Fishing with my grandchild.

I’m dreaming.
Because dreams aren’t just for the young—
 Or the lucky few.
 Dreams are for you.

So let me ask you:
What do you still long for?
What haven’t you dared to say out loud?
 What’s still on your heart?
 What are you dreaming about?

Maybe Mitch Hedberg had it right.
Maybe we don’t always have to chase our dreams.
Maybe our job is simply to remember when they felt closer.
And when life hits us in the mouth…
To have the courage to dream a new dream.
