In the fourth episode of the mini series, we talk to Mark Le Feuvre - head of Research & Development at Siemens Healthineers, a global medical technology company pioneering innovative breakthroughs in the healthcare space. With over 7 years of experience in this role, Mark lets us in on what companies like this are really looking for when recruiting, what skills you can capitalise on from your PhD, and how to land that dream job in a specialist or non-specialist role in a med-tech industry.

In part 2 of our PhD Journey series, Carolin and Nicol continue their conversation with fellow PhD students Laura and Svenja, talking about the first few weeks and months of a PhD. 

The journey to PhD has many steps, but the first is almost always applying and interviewing. 

In this episode, Carolin and Nicol met with their classmates Laura and Svenja to discuss their experiences with applying and interviewing, and to share any advice they have for students who are currently going through the process.

In the third part of our PhD to Industry mini-series, we talk to Rosh Sellahewa -  a senior manager at Deloitte UK who began his PhD journey researching nuclear physics. Rosh chatted about his 'accidental' transition into industry, key skills from his PhD which he believes landed him his industry roles, and his top tips for current students thinking of following in his footsteps.

Chris wanted to do a PhD while keeping his income as clinical trials manager. So he decided to apply for a clinical trials grant and, once successful, added a PhD position on top.  We ask him about the grant application process, finding the right principal investigator for the study, his role as a clinical trials manager and more!

Quitting a job is considered normal. So why is quitting a PhD looked down on as failure?

In this episode, we talk to Jay who started his PhD and then realised that it wasn't the right path for him. He decided to quit and started his own company called Transreport. The company is successful and Jay is now much happier. So did he really fail?

In the second episode of this series, we chat to David Robertson, a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, about his experiences of working in applied academia, communicating with industry and developing your Research and Knowledge portfolio.  

In this episode, we present a panel discussion between the host Nicol and Claire, Katrina and Sheila - researchers who identify as neurodivergent, about what neurodiversity means for them, their experiences with life at university, travelling to conferences and more. Has the pandemic affected your PhD? In this episode we speak to Jess - a PhD student and Ellen - a postdoc at Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry (SGDP) Centre at King’s College London. They have recently written  a blog on Effective Strategies for Working from Home, inspired by an article by Harvard Business Review titled How to (Actually) Save Time When You’re Working Remotely.
We found their blog very relatable and were excited to hear more about the impact the pandemic has had on their work.  We discuss how doing a PhD from home is different than being in an office surrounded by other students, how the nature and frequency of meetings have changed and what strategies we have found effective to help us cope with the situation. We're not trying to give any advice because what do we know, but we hope you can maybe relate to our experiences of working from home and not feel too alone in your struggles.
