Welcome to the Kidman Huddle, Amber Pike. Growing God's kingdom one child at a time.
SPEAKER_01:Welcome back to the Kidman Huddle. So this is the last podcast episode of the year. And I had something different planned. So you're just gonna have to wait until 2026 for that one. And I thought it would be fun just to kind of recap the year. My top 25 in 25. So this is a mix of things that just I personally have loved. I, as a mom, I as a kidmen leader, things that I've used in children's ministry, just 25 super awesome things of 25. And these are all things that I've used, I have loved, maybe new discoveries, all that, kind of different categories too. So I'm gonna kind of hop around categories and just share some really cool stuff. So number one, I'm a notebook and pen girl, and I go through phases of this is the only pen I will use. And I think all year I've been on these papermate pens, they come in colors, and I really, really love purple. And I also have a turquoise color that matches Intentional Children's Ministry. So I love these papermate pens. They write good, they last a really long time, and I like writing in pretty colors. So we'll go ahead and go to number two because this was an exciting year for me. I launched Intentional Children's Ministry. I launched the audiobook version. Getting to do my own audiobook was so cool. I this book is the culmination of a lifetime worth of children's ministry, and I love it. I'm so excited when I see people reading it. So definitely one of my favorite things in 2025. Um, next up for the classroom, I have a classroom set of Legos. And if you have Lego kids, Legos are pricey. So I have off-brand Legos, and it's amazing. So hey, all these things, I'm gonna be putting some links in the show notes. Um, they are affiliate links that don't cost you any more. It just, hey, helps me buy more things. It helps me buy more pens, right? Um, but I did a Lego event and it was so much fun, and I was gonna need all these Legos, and Legos are really expensive. So I bought off-brands and they work great. I have a big tub of them in my classroom. The kids love building with them, and then I ended up writing a whole series using Legos, and it was so fun. They had a Lego take home each Sunday, including, if you're watching this, um, Lego eyeballs. You can just order Lego eyeballs, and they made these cute little people and we hot glued them on a card, and it was super fun. Off-brand Legos, they work really good, they really do. Health-wise, I have lots of aches and pains because I'm like 85. And I bought this back brace this year. I'm not gonna show you the back brace because it would look weird, but it's really good. If you have a lot of upper back pain, it helps straighten your posture and you put it on for like 20, 30 minutes, and it helps. I put it on this morning because I'm like, oh, my back's hurting. Especially useful if you are sleeping in a camp bed. If you know, you know. Something that I loved this year was some really good books. I'm looking at my I've got piles sitting here for easy access. We are big readers in our family, and I'm trying to get my daughter to be a big reader too. And this was the book this year that really solidified it for her. This is Matilda by Roald Dale. I don't know how to say his name. I always thought it was Ronald. There's no N in his name. Um, it's the same guy, James and the Giant Peach, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Big Friendly Giant. But this is Matilda, if you were a 90s kid like me. I mean, I was born in '87, but grew up in the 90s. You might remember Matilda, the movie, and it was so fun. And we were absolutely all trying to like use telekinetic powers to do things like she did in the show. The book is so good, so cute. I do think there is like one bad word. It was either a bad word or Jesus' name in vain, and I don't do that. So I just skipped that when I was reading it out loud. Such a fun book. It has been my daughter's favorite read aloud this year and kind of jump-started that excitement to read chapter books for her. So we really enjoyed Matilda. Um, next up, something I use in Kidman all the time are these paper envelopes. I don't know if that's really what they're called. Or sorry, plastic. They're not paper. Um, I don't know if that's their name, but I love these. They come in a big pack and they're perfect for sorting things, filing things away that you're probably gonna use again. If you're like me, if I make something really cool for Kidman, I'm probably using it again. Or I'm keeping all of my event supplies together, or I have the Bible verse in puzzle format, and the kids have to put them together. So here you go, here's your thing. A sticker label goes on there really nice. It's kind of a little bit bigger than legal size, so it fits in your filing cabinets really well. I think I just ordered pack number five of these. I love these, they are amazing, and I can see through them, right? Nothing's falling out, it's protecting it in my bag. I can see through it, so I know what's in there. I can label it. I even put like my conference itineraries, all these things. A much loved item in my house. Something else, if we're getting in the super, super practical, is tape. But not just any tape. This is marvelous tape. So the spelling of this is weird. It sounds like you're saying marvelous, but you took the R out. It's M-A-V-A-L-U-S. A teacher designed this tape. It comes in weird colors. Sometimes the colors aren't available, but this stuff is it's marvelous, that's the name. A tape loop in each corner of a poster will hold up a poster on concrete walls all of VBS week. I had those churches where nope, you have to only use the blue painter's tape on our walls so we don't rip the paint, and the blue tape painter's tape holds up absolutely nothing. This stuff is legit, my friends. It is heavy duty, a little bit, it goes a long way. It is pricey. I'm talking, it is like, I think a four-pack is$35 or something. But trust me when I tell you this stuff is worth it, but guard it. Don't give it to the teenagers. The teens will overuse it. A little bit goes a really long way with this stuff. I keep it in my bag. Um, I order extra for VBS because there's nothing worse than getting to VBS in the morning and all of your decorations, all of your posters have fallen to the ground and you gotta put them all back up. Movilist tape. Trust me, trust me, trust me. Um, something else that I've loved in my personal life. I'm on a quest to organize, purge, and make things more efficient. Of course, that's what I need to be doing in December, right? Is these storage drawers. I'm gonna drop the link in there. They are clear storage drawers and they stack and they slide out. I, in the last two months, have redone my pantry and my bathroom closet with these. I love them. They're great. I'm putting the links in there. Next up in the book reading saga, we've read some great books with the kids, but we also listen to some books. I do love some audiobooks. I think audiobooks are great when you need to multitask. Maybe you have a really long car ride. Um, I will put some on in the morning or when I'm doing laundry. I'm not a great laundry putter upper. I wash it, it's clean, but then it sits there waiting for me to put it up. And then sometimes that takes a while because I let it sit so long. So I'll put in an audiobook or a podcast or something. Um, great. But I think our favorite uh me and the kids audiobook this year was the How to Train Your Dragon series. I was unaware that this was a book series. I thought it was just a fun TV show. Love the movie. Uh, and apparently there's a show, I've not watched the show, but love the movies. I think hiccup is the most adorable character ever. I love Toothless. I want my own dragon. But the audiobooks. Oh, the narrator is David Tennet. Now I'm showing my geek side here. David Tennet is Doctor Who. I love Doctor Who. He is, he's not my favorite doctor because Matt Smith is my favorite doctor, but David Tennet is a super close second. He's also, he's been in so much. He was in Harry Potter, uh, Barty Crouch's son. If you've watched the movies, he's done so much and he is he's Scrooge McDuck in the new DuckTales remake. But he voices all of the characters. He's Scottish, so he has that natural Scottish accent. Those books are so fun. I think we've listened to two. We've got a third one kind of on the docket for us to listen to next. He does it just a really great job. It's a very fun listen, and they're only about two and a half hours a book. So it's not too bad. They're short books, but we really, really enjoyed that. Something else, it's an oldie, but it's a goodie, so I love to share about it whenever I can. Are my confetti streamers? Um, if you are watching this, you will see the awesomeness of them. Otherwise, I'm gonna try to explain it to you and have to cough. So I'm pausing for just a second so that I can pause. Sorry, tis the season here in Kentucky. But confetti streamers. I love confetti, I love glitter, but it does make a mess. These things do not. At the bottom is a little pipe cleaner looking thing. You put it on your finger, hold it on the inside of your hand, and then you're gonna rip open this little tissue paper that's on the top. In there are streamers that are connected to the base. So I'm holding it in my hand. I've ripped off the top, and then I'm going to throw it on in the audience. It's got like 10 feet or more of streamer. It makes this big fun. It's definitely a great photo op. Get your camera guy there or gal. So much fun. And then as long as the kids don't take it, you just ball it up because it's still attached to your hand. Um, I use these at camp, I use these at VBS, I will take them to children's ministry things. So much fun. You get a big pack. I literally on one of my shelves have a basket of confetti streamers. That's how much I use them. Trust me, you'll love it. In the same line of fun and sparkly. I don't have any in now, but I love hair tinsel. I wear it at camp. You'll see me in conferences. I'll have purple sparkles in my hair. This is a great bonding. One, it's sorry, guys, this is more of a girl thing. I guess you could put some in your beard, maybe. I don't know. It might be weird. But it's a fun, you know. Look, I'm fun because we want to pretend that we're way younger than we are, right? But think about this with your kids. I would take these to camp when I'd have groups of girls, and I would do all their hair with the the things. With that, also, um, don't use your comb, all that, you know, lice. But you're as long as you're not using your comb on them, like have a separate one, maybe lock it in a bag, you're not contaminating brushes. So use your own discretion on that. We don't want lice. But it's a really quick, really easy. It's these little beads. You use this little eye hook, put the bead in your hair, put the tinsel on the eye hook, stick it in, clamp it shut, trim to size. So if you have short hair like me, you're cutting off a lot. If you have long hair, long tinsel. I've had the same pack of hair tinsel for four years probably now, and it's still going strong. It's like 14 bucks. So fun. I have a little case for it. I take it all the places, and it's fun with kids. And then they just like seeing you wearing your cool hair tinsel, and I love it. Next thing is another health thing for me. Camp is a lot of walking, our camp has a hill. Um, conference is a lot of walking, and I'm I'm at that point in life, as much as it pains me, that I have to have really good shoes. I didn't used to be that way. I would buy shoes in the wrong size if they were cute, right? I'll make it work. It's fine. Foot paint is fine. Can't do that now. So I found at Ross, because it's one of my favorite places to shop because it's cheaper, a pair of hokas. And I'm like, okay, I've heard the buzz. Are they that great? Yes, they are. They are that great. So get yourself some good shoes. If hokas are the thing for you, awesome. I've heard brooks are supposed to be really good. Um, whatever it is, invest in the good shoes so you will be okay for camp, for VBS, for all of the stuff as you get older. It's a little harder on your body. I used to be able to rock camp and like my chacos and two hours of sleep, and I was fine. And at 38, I'm not fine. My back hurts, my knees hurt. I've I messed up my knee a couple years ago at VBS, and it's still not right. And this past summer at camp, I was up on the hill. So I had to walk up a hill. And one of my groups are amazing, and they would give me rides tons of the time. But I would be laying in bed, just almost in tears, my knee and all the muscles around my knee hurt so bad. And I would have to take my strong knee medicine because I was in such pain. So take care of your body, buy the good shoes. It's a good investment, even if it's pricey. So I've talked about a couple of books that my kids have enjoyed, but this is one that I really enjoyed. I read this year The Read Aloud Family by Sarah McKenzie. I've also started following her online. I haven't listened to it yet because I've been a little busy, but I want to listen to her podcast too because she talks about books. If you're watching this, I shamefully, maybe, dog ear my pages. I write in books and I dog ear my pages when I need to go back to it. So take a look at how many dog ears I have in this book. A lot. There was so much that I wanted to come back to, so many lists. As a reading family, I was reading this and I'm like, I'm horrible. This is shameful. How few things I've read with my kids. And we read a lot. So highly recommend this. You as a parent, it's not necessarily done from a Christian perspective, but she's not not Christian. She definitely has some Jesus-centered recs, but this is just, you need to read with your kids. And one of the best things you can do is read with your kids. Now, add that to if you're reading God's word with your kids or faith growing, even better. Love, love, love this book. Got some ideas, and we are kind of on a quest to redo a lot that we have done. My kids have six-year difference. So I read a lot of these classics with my son when he was little, either before my daughter was born or really before she was at the stage of comprehending. So we started going back. Like we just finished The Chronicles of Narnia, and he had actually forgotten a lot of it because he was so young. So we do it fun at the Pike Home School. We read the book and then we watch the movie and we talk about the differences. And then for Narnia, you know, one of the big things is Edmund eats Turkish Delight. So we just went to Junkle Gym's recently and we got a box of Turkish Delight and we just tried it. So the kids got to eat the Turkish Delight like Edmund, because that's how I roll. So really highly recommend this. The Read Aloud Family. So good. It will encourage you just to read more with your kids. Next on my list, uh, I talk about this a lot, my timeline poster, one of my classroom things that I use all the time. It wasn't new this year, but I really felt I needed to mention it because I legit use it about every Sunday. It's short, it's sweet. You print it out at Walgreens, but it's that framework of helping kids understand where we're at in the narrative, which is super duper important. And to make it even more fun, I get, you know, a pointer finger from Dollar Tree and point at it, and then you can let the kids go and do that, and they point where we're at on it. Super fun, but a classroom need. Another thing that I love, it's been kind of a game changer for me, is a new printer. I work from home, so I don't really go to the church and we don't have a great copier. Uh being a volunteer, I'm just like, I'll do it at home. So I print all my stuff in my copier or my printer at my house, and I invested this year, pulled the plug, bought a little pricier one, and it is a instead of a cartridge, it is the refillable ink reservoir. This is the Epson 3850. And my friends, let me tell you, this is a game changer. I love this thing. It will print like all of my conference flyers, my VBS books. Like if I'm printing out an extra copy of the book for one of my leaders, you know, when you got like two people or we had a situation where someone had to stay home midweek because they were sick for VBS and I needed to print out the book. It does front and back, it does full color and it barely uses any ink. So I can set it to print my front and back conference flyers, full color, nice printing, and it just does it and it barely uses any ink. On my old HP printer, that would have been like a cartridge and a half. This thing is amazing. Definitely check in if you print a lot at home or at church, get the Epson 3850. It is fabulous, and the ink's not super expensive, but seriously, I've only refilled it once and I've had it a year. So, yes, fun, fun story though. When I got it, I couldn't get it to work. And I'm not like tech challenged. Like, I know how to set up a printer. And I have to call my dad. I'm like, dad, please come help me. I don't know what's going on because every time that it prints a paper, it's jamming. Well, it turns out we just had a faulty printer that a screw had come loose and it was kind of lodged in the print track. And even after we removed it, it just didn't print right, it kept jamming. So we returned it to Sam's because I bought this one at Sam's, and the new one's been amazing. So if it prints wonky, it might just be a defect, but it was great. Um, a new book that I've got, I don't have it here to show you because it's already wrapped up for Christmas for one of my nieces, is The God Contest by Carl Lafden. I don't know if I'm saying your name right, Carl. I'm sorry. One of my favorite accounts in the Bible is Elijah on Mount Carmel and the prophets of Baal, and it is such a sweet book. It tells that, but then it's a really great the whole theme of the book is Choose God. And I love this book. I'm really excited to give it to one of my nieces because it's one of my favorite stories. So this one was a newer to me one this year that I'm probably gonna soon go buy a copy for myself in my storage. But niece number two, if you're by some chance watching my podcast, you're getting a book for Christmas. Other stuff too. Another thing that I recently ordered was more chairs for my classroom. I obviously don't have them here to show you, but they are lime green chairs. Now, here's my side note about kids' furniture in your classroom. Think about the age of your kids to the extreme. Now, I say this. I've seen a lot of churches. My church that I'm at now had this before I got there. They had small furniture, like the furniture that was on the made-for description, you know, suitable for children ages four to six. Guys, I make really big kids. My son at 14 is six foot. He's tall. He has always been tall. My daughter is tall. And she was sitting in the kids' chairs at like six with her little knees bent, with her knees bent because she couldn't fit her legs under the table. Please think about this when you think of furniture. That there will be bigger kids than what the manufacturer suggested age is. For that reason, I don't do kids' furniture. Now, granted, I do not have a preschool only classroom. If I had a preschool only, I would probably have some kids' furniture. But because I have mixed ages, I do not do preschool only, I do adult furniture. But I want it to be fun. So we have just the folding tables from Costco or Sam's, and then I have these bright green chairs. I've used them at two churches. They are pricey, but they're fun. They stack well, they hold up well, and they give that pop of color that says, Hey kids, this space is for you. I really love easy risers. We're not at the point financially where my church is ready for that. Also space-wise, but we are growing slowly. We just added another family, and I'm like, I'm out of chairs. I've got no extra. So you always want to have room to grow. Love these chairs. They're bright, they're fun. All right, what else do I have? Oh, my recording studio. You can't see it, but I have this really cool recording studio for downstairs, and this is my recording area. Um, this is plastic, this is plastic, like wallpaper under drywall. This is literally a corner of my basement, but I have this awesome recording studio my husband got me last year for Christmas. It has the shelf for my laptop, it has the selfie light, it has an arm that swings out to put your cell phone on. It's got another arm for your microphone, it's adjustable. So it has this, it's like a four in one, it holds all the things. I love it, so I can do multiple things. I can have my phone like when I do. The Facebook Lives in the Family Ministry community. Those through the phone, but I'm able to have my laptop open and answer all the comments, and I've got my lights, and I love it. So if you do any kind of video recording, you don't need to do a bunch of like boxes stacked on things. This is perfect. Something that we new to us, maybe not new to you, is a game. This is Santa Cookie Elf Snowman, but it's from the holiday version of Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, which you know I'm totally going to be buying. So fun. Why am I sharing a Christmas game? Because I would always take Spot It to camp. Spot It's my go-to. I love Spot It. We have every version of Spot It I think there is available. This would be on my list, not the Christmas one. I would get the Taco Cat Goat Pizza one. It's just a fun anybody can play in once you figure out the rules. So you say the things in order as you lay a card. So Santa, next person, cookie, next person elf, next person candy, next person snowman. If the word being said matches the card, the first person to slap the pile wins. And the last person gets the card. The goal is to get rid of all your cards. Super fun, super easy. I love games at camp when you have those kind of free time things. Maybe you're waiting to get into the worship session or you're done with lunch early. Something like this could be a great, it's a good relationship builder, super fun. You play with them. If you're doing um a Christmas gift, this is a fun gift for families. Really, really, really fun. Loved it. Another book that we loved is The Wing Feather Saga. I talked about this the other day in the Family Ministry Community Training, but it's worth mentioning. So we had a big trip to North Carolina. My son and I, we had a long car ride. I'm like, hey, let's listen to number two, bud. And he'd read number one. So I read number one to get caught up on. I read number two. I am waiting on him. He's a fast reader, but he's not as fast as me. And I'm like, I need you to finish because I need to talk to you about this. I finished number four, and I'm like, ah, I need to talk to someone. So I was like angry emailing Josh, my boss, at 11 something one night, and I'm like, and I think inwardly he's like, oh, Amper. Such a good story. Definitely opens up for some good Jesus conversations. Andrew Peterson is a Christian. He does lots of great Jesus stuff. This has so many Christian allegories and themes, kind of along the lines of like how Narnia does. Read it. Just trust me. Read it, read it, read it. If you are looking for some Kidman swag, I added quite a few new Kidman swag items to my repertoire closet this year. These are all from Kidman Crine. She's awesome. This one is her God says disciple them. And that one's not marked out if you're not watching. The others say babysit them, busy them, entertain them. And those are all crushed out because we know we disciple them. And then it's got it in the back. So you can order through her website. It's on demand. You can get all the things. She has so many fun ones, but you gotta have some good kidmen's wag. A game that I did this year was called Protect the Quacken. I did this at camp with like 170-something kids. It was so much fun. And I bought this box full of ducks. And they had to walk around with a duck on their hand, on the top of their hand. The goal was to protect your quacken while knocking every everyone else's duck off of their hand, and they got to take the duck home. And I tied it into our lesson for the day, and it was so much fun. But a giant box of ducks. All you need them. Something else that you might want to add to your kidmen supply list is some puke bags. This is now a camp standard for me. Stays in my car. I've got one in my travel bag, which is also the bag that I'll have around at VBS and I'll have around at camp because we drove home six hours from camp with my daughter throwing up. Thank goodness I had like a mint bucket from a treat I'd done for the staffers and some Walmart bags because I would have to pull off the road. She was really, really sick with strep, didn't know it yet. I thought she just got a tummy bug, and I was on the side of the interstate in Tennessee watching to make sure we weren't gonna get hit by semi while holding the bucket for her. So now I have Schnazzy puke bug puke bags. They fold up flat, they're in my bag. I think you should probably invest in some yourself. Um, okay, let me check. I think we've almost hit 25. So I talked about the kids' books, I've talked about the health thing, I hit all of the um the home thing. So we're down to our last two things. So we'll go with this one. It just released something you need for your kidmen is my new book, Praise Him. I'm so excited about this. If you've listened to me before, you know I'm really picky when it comes to family devotions. And I think most of them are fluffy and they're not really growing a family's faith, and they barely get families into the word, but praise him starts with the word. So it would have been great if I opened to the right page, like magically. But they start out right away, read from God's word together. Short little intro talking about, you know, building out this is what our focus is on this, this is what we're we're learning. It's not like, let me tell you this story about a puppy. No, it's here's what God's word's saying, here's how you apply it to your life. Pray together, praise God together. Boom. Love it, love it, love it. Use up that 20 to 25 budget dollars plan for 26 resource families with this. I'm really proud of it, and it's really, really pretty in my first hardback book. So that was really special. It was a really special way to end 2025 for me. Last one, we're down to product 25 of 25. This is a me thing. Me as a mom, I think it would be great for you as a kidman leader. Um, guys, you could read it too, even though it says mom, but it is overwhelmed mom by Jamie Erickson. And I loved this. I am a what type A personality who's always doing the things and feeling the need to be busy and do the things. And sometimes I feel overwhelmed with everything that's on me between mom and church and job and all the things, right? The laundry, it doesn't end. Loved this. This is one of those books that stuck with me. I've read a lot of books in in 2025. I think I just finished 105. Book number 105. I'm hoping to hit one, I wanted to hit 150. I don't think I'm gonna make it this year because I got like 15 days left. But this is one that is really sticking with me and some things that I've really been reflecting on and praying on, and yes, made some lists on because that's me. Loved this book. So those are my 25 products, things in 25, but I thought I'd give you a couple of bonus that aren't things. Um, my favorite memory from 2025 was we took a really big family trip to Disney. This was like our biggest family vacation ever, and it was absolutely magical. Everything went almost perfect. It was just such a wonderful, fun time, and I treasure that memory. My favorite event that we did at church this year is a tie between our Taste and See event, which was that pie praise. It was just a really great turnout. People enjoyed it, it was fun, and then a sticky faith event, which was that pancake event that I made about sharing your faith. That one was just low-key and impromptu-ish. It was created quickly out of necessity, and I really enjoyed it. And then my favorite kidmen event was in January this year, with I took Reed. He goes with me to the Answers in Genesis VBS workshop, and he got to help me on the main stage and in my classroom. And I just love seeing my kids shine. He is totally cool with getting up in front of a thousand people and talking, and he's like cracking jokes and making them laugh. And I just, as a mommy, that's really, really special. So that's my 2025. What about 2026? Well, I'm working on a new book. I've got several conferences coming up. CBC is the first. I've got, I'm doing a pre-con. If you are coming to CBC, guys, sign up for the Family Ministry Pre-con we are doing. I've got two breakouts, including my newest flannel graph one. It's so fun. Beyond the flannel graph, all about interactive teaching. You are gonna love that one. If you're gonna be at CBC, stop, say hi. I'll be speaking at the Bible Creative Conference online. I'll be at CM Expo in Oklahoma. I'm taking my oldest niece, niece number one, gets to come with me because my son is going to a men's conference with my husband. So that's gonna be awesome. I'm excited about a new prayer calendar that I got just to be a little more intentional, kind of on my wall, in my face, I see it instead of a sticky note with prayer. Um, and then my goal to read more, um, purge more of my house, organize more, do all the things, keep keep discipling my kids, keep connecting with you guys and resourcing and encouraging you. I hope that this podcast is helpful to you. If you love it, do all the things you're supposed to, like follow it and give it a rating, all that. Share it with a friend. Um, but hey, reach out. If you're dealing with stuff, if you have questions about stuff, I am in the trenches living it. I am figuring things out, I make lots of mistakes, and you can learn from my mistakes. If you have questions or ideas, if you want to share something cool, let me know about a cool product. Maybe it becomes one of my new favorites. Let's connect on social media. Friends, this is the last episode, last you'll hear from me, 2025. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your families. I hope you take some time to reflect on 25, plan for 26, and above all, remember what you do, kidmen friends, matters.
