In this episode we begin our remake of the Peloponnesian War by following the powerful narrative left to us by Thucydides, whose history of the conflict remains one of the most remarkable works ever written about war and politics. Using Thucydides as our primary guide—while incorporating additional ancient sources and modern research—we trace the escalating rivalry between Athens and Sparta, from the uneasy tensions following the Pentekontaetia through the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War, the devastating plague in Athens, the rise and fall of ambitious leaders, and the catastrophic Sicilian Expedition. As always, Thucydides’ sharp analysis of power, fear, and human nature drives the story forward, and in this first part we carry the narrative all the way to the point where his history famously breaks off mid-conflict—ending, as he did, with a war still raging and a Greece forever changed by the struggle.
The History of Modern Greece Podcast covers the events from Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and the fall of Constantinople in 1453, to the years under the Ottoman Empire, and 1821 when the Greeks fought for independence... all the way to the modern-day.
