History of Modern Greece
The History of Modern Greece covers the events of the Greek People from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Greek War of Independence in 1821-1832, to the modern day. We are a father and son team. We are not historians, but we are hardcore fans of history. We embarked on a mission to understand exactly how the Ancient Greek civilization transformed into the modern nation we see today. To prepare ourselves for the journey we purchased dozens of textbooks, watched numberless documentaries, and listened to as many historical podcasts as we could find. Come and join us on our journey to discover the History of Modern Greece.

The mighty Arab Caliphate had grown to become one of the largest Empires the world had ever seen, and they seemed to have come out of nowhere. Half of the Roman Empire, all of the Persian Empire, and large swaths of land in Africa and Asia were all under the control of the Umayyad Caliphate. But their lust for conquest and ruthlessness, and Arab Supremacy, made the people of the new empire uneasy with their current way of life. In the northern outskirts of the old Persian Empire, a new dynasty that could trace its lineage to the prophet Mohammad was planning their move. This is the Rise of the Abbasid Caliphate.
The History of Modern Greece covers the events of the Greek People from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Greek War of Independence in 1821-1832, all the way through to the Greco-Turkish War from 1919 to 1922.

If you enjoyed this episode and would like to hear more about the decline of the Umayyad Caliphate and the Rise of the Abbasids, I recommend two podcasts for you. The first is Robin Pierson’s The History of Byzantium, specifically episode 83, and the second show is the History of Islam. The history of Islam doesn’t take you right up to the civil war, but it will fill in a lot of what happened right before.
