Welcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. During this time of Covid, many people aren’t able to use the library in the same way as in the past. To help bring more stories to more readers, many publishing companies are allowing books that are normally unavailable for copyright reasons to be read out loud and shared with others until June 30, 2023. In her book Throwing Shadows, E. L. Konigsburg introduces us to several characters whose lives are changed for the better by a chance encounter with someone else. That meeting throws a shadow on what things have been, and what they can become. Ned is the boy in this first story, “On Shark’s Tooth Beach.” He loves hunting along the long stretch of the ocean shore in front of his house for fossilized shark teeth. But he doesn’t particularly like to hunt for these treasures with the retired man, Bob, who likes to inform Ned several times a day that he used to be the president of a college in Michigan. When Ned finds himself in a situation where he feels he is becoming like President Bob, he makes an important choice.
