As a kindergartner, I actually wrote"},{"startTime":344.021,"endTime":347.162,"body":"a children's book and brought it into my kindergarten class, and"},{"startTime":347.183,"endTime":350.764,"body":"my teacher loved it so much that she kept it. So there were times"},{"startTime":350.864,"endTime":354.706,"body":"in my academic life when I did feel incredibly"},{"startTime":354.786,"endTime":358.627,"body":"supported in my writing, but there"},{"startTime":358.647,"endTime":362.309,"body":"were also times, and unfortunately these seemed to"},{"startTime":362.509,"endTime":366.071,"body":"be the ones that stuck with me more, There were times"},{"startTime":366.211,"endTime":370.075,"body":"when school deterred me from being"},{"startTime":370.175,"endTime":373.338,"body":"creative because of the pressure of"},{"startTime":373.538,"endTime":376.601,"body":"grades. I mean, there were so many examples when I"},{"startTime":377.542,"endTime":380.845,"body":"would have this creative urge to do"},{"startTime":380.986,"endTime":384.429,"body":"something with a project and go a different route,"},{"startTime":384.469,"endTime":388.173,"body":"think outside of the box and try something different in"},{"startTime":388.233,"endTime":391.329,"body":"my writing. And I'd pull myself back from it"},{"startTime":391.449,"endTime":395.151,"body":"because I knew that that wasn't what the teacher was looking for"},{"startTime":395.351,"endTime":398.713,"body":"to get the A. And I am very much an"},{"startTime":399.274,"endTime":403.076,"body":"on-the-path-to-recovery people pleaser. I was"},{"startTime":403.176,"endTime":406.598,"body":"a straight A student. I literally never got a B in"},{"startTime":406.638,"endTime":409.78,"body":"my entire academic career. And that was something I used to"},{"startTime":409.82,"endTime":413.122,"body":"hang my hat on. I'm like, I am such a good student. This is"},{"startTime":413.182,"endTime":417.064,"body":"my self-worth, blah, blah, blah. But when I"},{"startTime":417.124,"endTime":420.806,"body":"was focused on making sure that I got the grade, sometimes"},{"startTime":420.866,"endTime":424.449,"body":"that meant that I didn't take the risks. And"},{"startTime":424.549,"endTime":427.771,"body":"risk is so ingrained in creative work, because if"},{"startTime":427.811,"endTime":431.975,"body":"you're just following the status quo, You're"},{"startTime":432.015,"endTime":436.857,"body":"never going to do something new and unique and honest. There"},{"startTime":437.697,"endTime":442.578,"body":"were a bunch of instances throughout my academic"},{"startTime":442.718,"endTime":445.959,"body":"career where I would tweak things to make"},{"startTime":445.999,"endTime":449.34,"body":"sure I was doing what the teacher wanted instead of what I wanted"},{"startTime":449.44,"endTime":452.841,"body":"or whatever. But there was one moment in my high school"},{"startTime":452.881,"endTime":456.142,"body":"years that really kind of broke me as a writer"},{"startTime":456.202,"endTime":460.199,"body":"for a very long time. I was nominated by"},{"startTime":460.219,"endTime":464.0,"body":"one of my teachers to participate in a writing competition,"},{"startTime":464.36,"endTime":467.48,"body":"which was a creative like fiction writing competition. And I"},{"startTime":467.54,"endTime":470.821,"body":"was thrilled because I still"},{"startTime":470.861,"endTime":475.042,"body":"at this point, anytime I had the opportunity to do creative writing,"},{"startTime":475.062,"endTime":478.183,"body":"I would do it. Like any project where it was like"},{"startTime":478.223,"endTime":481.844,"body":"an open forum, do whatever you want for this book project"},{"startTime":481.924,"endTime":485.185,"body":"or this, you know, whatever, I would find a way to"},{"startTime":485.245,"endTime":488.823,"body":"make it creative writing. And so I went into this"},{"startTime":488.943,"endTime":492.426,"body":"writing competition, like, so excited to"},{"startTime":492.526,"endTime":496.108,"body":"show what I had and to get feedback and"},{"startTime":496.248,"endTime":499.55,"body":"to, you know, to put my work out there for the first time"},{"startTime":499.63,"endTime":503.173,"body":"for real. And I didn't even place."},{"startTime":503.733,"endTime":506.955,"body":"Like, it wasn't that I didn't get first place or I didn't get second or"},{"startTime":506.975,"endTime":510.598,"body":"I didn't get third. I think they gave honorable mentions"},{"startTime":510.658,"endTime":513.86,"body":"to the top 10, which was like the top, I"},{"startTime":513.9,"endTime":517.283,"body":"don't know, 25% of people. And I didn't"},{"startTime":517.383,"endTime":520.545,"body":"place in that at all, which for a straight A"},{"startTime":520.626,"endTime":523.848,"body":"student who was used to being at the top of all of"},{"startTime":523.908,"endTime":527.551,"body":"the things, for me to not even place in"},{"startTime":527.611,"endTime":531.214,"body":"something that I thought was my life calling was so"},{"startTime":531.794,"endTime":534.896,"body":"painful and I stuffed it down because I was like,"},{"startTime":534.916,"endTime":538.598,"body":"this is so silly. I don't want to be viewed as"},{"startTime":538.638,"endTime":542.001,"body":"like a poor sport or a poor loser. And I"},{"startTime":542.181,"endTime":545.523,"body":"think what also made it worse was the two other kids from"},{"startTime":545.563,"endTime":549.105,"body":"my school did place. One of them won first"},{"startTime":549.165,"endTime":552.347,"body":"place and she was a friend of mine. And then"},{"startTime":552.407,"endTime":556.31,"body":"I had to get in the car with her from the award ceremony"},{"startTime":556.41,"endTime":559.789,"body":"and drive two hours home. So that"},{"startTime":559.849,"endTime":563.072,"body":"sucked. And then the other person from"},{"startTime":563.112,"endTime":566.475,"body":"my school was one of my best friends, and he"},{"startTime":566.555,"endTime":569.657,"body":"placed in the top 10. It was mortifying to"},{"startTime":569.717,"endTime":573.14,"body":"me that I didn't place, and they did."},{"startTime":573.501,"endTime":576.824,"body":"And I didn't write creatively for"},{"startTime":579.053,"endTime":582.976,"body":"the rest of high school through college into my professional"},{"startTime":583.456,"endTime":587.239,"body":"life. Not until I was in my mid-20s"},{"startTime":587.559,"endTime":591.302,"body":"did I write again after that competition, other than academic writing."},{"startTime":592.043,"endTime":595.245,"body":"It was definitely a"},{"startTime":599.475,"endTime":602.696,"body":"I didn't know about the bit in the car as well. There you"},{"startTime":604.437,"endTime":607.638,"body":"Oh my gosh. It was like, I'm not going to cry. I'm not"},{"startTime":607.658,"endTime":610.959,"body":"going to cry. I'm not going to cry because I wanted, I was so proud"},{"startTime":611.0,"endTime":614.581,"body":"of her. She wrote this and her piece really was incredible and"},{"startTime":614.621,"endTime":618.782,"body":"it was very personal and very vulnerable and she 100% deserved"},{"startTime":618.822,"endTime":622.182,"body":"to win. But it was like, Oh my gosh. I"},{"startTime":625.624,"endTime":629.245,"body":"Oh, good for you. So you"},{"startTime":629.305,"endTime":632.666,"body":"mentioned about academic writing. What then did"},{"startTime":632.686,"endTime":635.867,"body":"you go on to? What did you do at college? What was the aim for"},{"startTime":637.087,"endTime":640.328,"body":"So I went to college for biology, which I"},{"startTime":640.368,"endTime":643.609,"body":"think some people in the arts would be like, oh, I was pushed to do"},{"startTime":643.669,"endTime":647.01,"body":"the sciences because that was the safe route. And that actually wasn't the"},{"startTime":647.05,"endTime":650.932,"body":"case for me. I genuinely was interested in biology. I"},{"startTime":651.032,"endTime":655.153,"body":"had considered going into med school or"},{"startTime":655.513,"endTime":659.174,"body":"becoming an EMT or something along the lines of"},{"startTime":659.254,"endTime":662.495,"body":"the sciences. I'm genuinely fascinated by science. And"},{"startTime":663.036,"endTime":666.677,"body":"I do think that there is creativity within the science field"},{"startTime":666.737,"endTime":669.853,"body":"as well. I also knew that I"},{"startTime":669.913,"endTime":673.534,"body":"loved acting and was considering pursuing that"},{"startTime":673.754,"endTime":677.635,"body":"as a double major, but I wasn't sure where"},{"startTime":677.775,"endTime":680.896,"body":"I wanted to fall with acting and whether that was something I was"},{"startTime":680.936,"endTime":684.737,"body":"going to continue to pursue aggressively or"},{"startTime":684.797,"endTime":688.118,"body":"if that was going to be more of like a hobby of mine or something that"},{"startTime":688.138,"endTime":691.64,"body":"I would do for fun. So I went into school as a biology major"},{"startTime":691.8,"endTime":695.037,"body":"and I focused on that. So I"},{"startTime":695.098,"endTime":698.461,"body":"went into school doing biology, but I knew that I didn't want to"},{"startTime":698.541,"endTime":702.044,"body":"go to med school by the time I got to college because in"},{"startTime":702.064,"endTime":706.088,"body":"high school, I took an EMT certification course"},{"startTime":706.428,"endTime":709.531,"body":"that was connected to the community college near me. For"},{"startTime":709.551,"endTime":713.254,"body":"those that don't know, EMT is like emergency medical technician. Anyway, so"},{"startTime":726.677,"endTime":729.88,"body":"I got certified as an EMT, but part of my"},{"startTime":729.98,"endTime":733.203,"body":"EMT training, I had to do an ambulance ride"},{"startTime":733.243,"endTime":737.067,"body":"along. But"},{"startTime":781.37,"endTime":785.091,"body":"getting into the ambulance and actually doing the ride along, I was like, nope,"},{"startTime":785.751,"endTime":789.216,"body":"Medicine's not for me. I will play one on TV, thank you very much."},{"startTime":789.516,"endTime":793.361,"body":"I do not want to do this for real. But"},{"startTime":793.401,"endTime":796.765,"body":"I still loved bio, so I was like, okay, there are other things that"},{"startTime":796.805,"endTime":800.229,"body":"I can do with a biology degree. I don't totally know what they are,"},{"startTime":800.589,"endTime":804.074,"body":"but I will go and learn about them at school. There's lots"},{"startTime":804.114,"endTime":807.819,"body":"of things I can do. And I slowly realized that"},{"startTime":807.939,"endTime":811.741,"body":"I didn't want to work in a lab because I'm too personable and"},{"startTime":811.801,"endTime":815.182,"body":"I didn't want to be away from people all the time and I"},{"startTime":815.782,"endTime":819.044,"body":"didn't want to go to medicine. So I was like,"},{"startTime":819.124,"endTime":823.246,"body":"OK, well, what is left with biology? There's"},{"startTime":823.306,"endTime":826.948,"body":"teaching and I did study education in school as"},{"startTime":827.028,"endTime":830.749,"body":"well. So that was always on the back burner. But in"},{"startTime":830.83,"endTime":836.186,"body":"college, the more that I interacted"},{"startTime":836.266,"endTime":839.991,"body":"with people who were studying acting"},{"startTime":840.011,"endTime":843.515,"body":"to then go into acting, acting majors who"},{"startTime":844.216,"endTime":847.56,"body":"knew that they were going to pursue acting after school, the"},{"startTime":847.6,"endTime":851.869,"body":"more I was like, yeah, Why not? Why"},{"startTime":851.929,"endTime":855.15,"body":"can't I do that? Because I have all of these"},{"startTime":855.23,"endTime":858.491,"body":"other tools that I can fall back on if I need to. The more"},{"startTime":858.671,"endTime":862.572,"body":"I ingrained myself in the community of acting"},{"startTime":862.812,"endTime":866.052,"body":"and storytelling, the more I was like, yeah, I can do this."},{"startTime":866.412,"endTime":870.393,"body":"And I think the tipping point for me really was my sophomore"},{"startTime":870.433,"endTime":873.614,"body":"year, my then boyfriend was a senior. And"},{"startTime":873.634,"endTime":877.275,"body":"so he graduated and he moved to LA to"},{"startTime":877.315,"endTime":880.675,"body":"become an actor. And I was like, Well, I mean, he's"},{"startTime":880.756,"endTime":884.437,"body":"good, but like, I think I'm just as good as"},{"startTime":884.517,"endTime":887.739,"body":"he is. So if he can do it, why can't I"},{"startTime":887.819,"endTime":891.26,"body":"do it? And I do genuinely owe that to"},{"startTime":891.34,"endTime":895.63,"body":"him because he gave me the permission to"},{"startTime":895.831,"endTime":899.255,"body":"follow my passion of acting after school."},{"startTime":899.835,"endTime":903.239,"body":"You know, we don't really talk very much anymore, but I do genuinely owe"},{"startTime":903.279,"endTime":906.683,"body":"that to him, that watching him do that and make that choice"},{"startTime":907.183,"endTime":910.287,"body":"for his life gave me the"},{"startTime":910.387,"endTime":913.731,"body":"courage to make that choice for my life after school"},{"startTime":915.212,"endTime":918.491,"body":"Yeah. So what does it actually look like then when"},{"startTime":938.921,"endTime":942.142,"body":"you leave college and then you're like, right, I'm going to go and be an actor and earn"},{"startTime":944.083,"endTime":947.787,"body":"Yeah, so shocking the money doesn't just start flowing"},{"startTime":947.987,"endTime":951.31,"body":"in the second you graduate with not even I didn't even major in"},{"startTime":951.39,"endTime":954.573,"body":"acting I'm still majored in biology. I had side jobs. It was incredible because I"},{"startTime":1373.046,"endTime":1376.567,"body":"realized that not only"},{"startTime":1376.687,"endTime":1380.288,"body":"did I miss writing, and I loved writing, and writing is"},{"startTime":1380.568,"endTime":1385.825,"body":"therapeutic for me and healing for me, but I"},{"startTime":1385.905,"endTime":1389.77,"body":"also realized that screenwriting was more my style from"},{"startTime":1389.79,"endTime":1393.915,"body":"a writing perspective because I had only ever"},{"startTime":1393.955,"endTime":1398.04,"body":"been exposed to prose before as,"},{"startTime":1398.06,"endTime":1401.626,"body":"you know, through academic readings, it's"},{"startTime":1401.686,"endTime":1405.048,"body":"always American literature. A lot of times it's very seeped in"},{"startTime":1408.551,"endTime":1412.614,"body":"like dense, descriptive words"},{"startTime":1412.734,"endTime":1416.937,"body":"and paragraphs. And I always was like, I"},{"startTime":1416.997,"endTime":1420.52,"body":"don't want to read three pages about the hibiscus. Like,"},{"startTime":1421.85,"endTime":1425.012,"body":"I'm sorry, I don't. I was always so much"},{"startTime":1425.072,"endTime":1429.434,"body":"more interested in the human connection, the dialogue"},{"startTime":1429.634,"endTime":1432.876,"body":"and what's not being said, but what's"},{"startTime":1432.916,"endTime":1436.617,"body":"being communicated through body language or the internal"},{"startTime":1436.678,"endTime":1440.119,"body":"monologues. And I realized that that's exactly what"},{"startTime":1440.139,"endTime":1444.541,"body":"screenwriting is. You are creating the characters and"},{"startTime":1445.322,"endTime":1448.464,"body":"outlining the world, but The rest of the"},{"startTime":1448.524,"endTime":1451.988,"body":"world is filled in by all of the other people who come"},{"startTime":1452.028,"endTime":1455.352,"body":"together to make a film. The screenwriter is the start of that,"},{"startTime":1455.472,"endTime":1458.836,"body":"but they don't have to fill in all of those details. They leave"},{"startTime":1459.136,"endTime":1462.64,"body":"open the space for other creatives to add"},{"startTime":1462.701,"endTime":1466.484,"body":"their creative input to it. And that was awesome"},{"startTime":1466.544,"endTime":1469.887,"body":"because I was like, okay, great. I don't have to do that. I can"},{"startTime":1470.007,"endTime":1473.609,"body":"write what I like to write. There is actually an art form"},{"startTime":1474.19,"endTime":1477.932,"body":"for my style of writing. What do you think? And I like handed my phone"},{"startTime":1519.621,"endTime":1522.843,"body":"to him and he stood there and read through it. And,"},{"startTime":1523.083,"endTime":1526.465,"body":"you know, it was like a 12 page script. So it took him like 10 minutes"},{"startTime":1526.505,"endTime":1531.788,"body":"or so to read it. I think maybe a little faster, but it felt like an eternity. And"},{"startTime":1531.808,"endTime":1535.043,"body":"then he was just like, cool. And he handed it back"},{"startTime":1535.103,"endTime":1539.83,"body":"to me and I was like, um, what'd"},{"startTime":1539.85,"endTime":1543.155,"body":"you think? And he was like, do you want to know? And"},{"startTime":1543.175,"endTime":1546.339,"body":"I was like, well, now I don't know. Do I want to"},{"startTime":1546.359,"endTime":1549.624,"body":"know? Because sometimes you can"},{"startTime":1576.228,"endTime":1579.33,"body":"be ready for feedback about certain aspects of a"},{"startTime":1579.39,"endTime":1582.632,"body":"story, but not everything. Maybe you know that your dialogue is"},{"startTime":1582.672,"endTime":1585.954,"body":"just placeholder dialogue, but you want to know if the story arc"},{"startTime":1586.035,"endTime":1589.357,"body":"makes sense. And I've learned that now it's okay to"},{"startTime":1589.397,"endTime":1592.999,"body":"be like, okay, this is what I want feedback on,"},{"startTime":1593.24,"endTime":1596.502,"body":"I don't want feedback on this. We were just in our apartment, locked away from the world. So I was training other"},{"startTime":1819.502,"endTime":1822.823,"body":"standardized patients and I was helping to develop the new cases. And"},{"startTime":1824.483,"endTime":1828.006,"body":"It was all online. It did seem to check every"},{"startTime":1828.086,"endTime":1831.769,"body":"box. If we look at what I studied in college, I studied acting,"},{"startTime":1832.389,"endTime":1835.852,"body":"education, and biology. This job"},{"startTime":1835.912,"endTime":1839.094,"body":"is the only job in the world where I got to do all three of those"},{"startTime":1839.174,"endTime":1843.359,"body":"things in a career. And so on paper it looked awesome"},{"startTime":1843.459,"endTime":1846.623,"body":"and I couldn't believe that I didn't even apply for it. Can"},{"startTime":1979.893,"endTime":1983.611,"body":"I actually read the quote? I have it pulled up right here. She"},{"startTime":1983.691,"endTime":1987.254,"body":"says, anger is the firestorm that signals the"},{"startTime":1987.394,"endTime":1990.697,"body":"death of our old life. Anger is the fuel that"},{"startTime":1990.737,"endTime":1994.36,"body":"propels us into our new one. Anger is a tool, not"},{"startTime":1994.4,"endTime":1997.562,"body":"a master. Anger is meant to be tapped into and"},{"startTime":1997.622,"endTime":2001.025,"body":"drawn upon. Used properly, anger is"},{"startTime":2001.265,"endTime":2004.468,"body":"useful. When I read that quote, at"},{"startTime":2004.488,"endTime":2008.07,"body":"the time I was so angry. in"},{"startTime":2008.13,"endTime":2011.711,"body":"my job for so many different reasons. I need to quit my job. So I did. What a realisation! So things are starting to pick back up. It just happened to align that way.
