And I decided to go down the"},{"startTime":282.372,"endTime":285.436,"body":"science route because not so"},{"startTime":282.372,"endTime":285.436,"body":"many people were good at science,"},{"startTime":285.548,"endTime":289.302,"body":"but. And not many females went"},{"startTime":285.548,"endTime":289.302,"body":"into science. And I thought, well,"},{"startTime":289.326,"endTime":292.246,"body":"there's bound to be"},{"startTime":289.326,"endTime":292.246,"body":"opportunities for a woman in science."},{"startTime":292.438,"endTime":297.158,"body":"So I did maths, physics,"},{"startTime":292.438,"endTime":297.158,"body":"chemistry, and I also did as level"},{"startTime":297.214,"endTime":302.118,"body":"German alongside that. And"},{"startTime":297.214,"endTime":302.118,"body":"once I sort of started my A levels,"},{"startTime":302.134,"endTime":304.358,"body":"I looked at what my friends"},{"startTime":302.134,"endTime":304.358,"body":"were doing. And so the maths was just going"},{"startTime":325.54,"endTime":328.732,"body":"over my head. And at the end"},{"startTime":325.54,"endTime":328.732,"body":"of my first year, I did my exams,"},{"startTime":328.796,"endTime":332.748,"body":"passed the physics part,"},{"startTime":328.796,"endTime":332.748,"body":"failed the maths part, and they said,"},{"startTime":332.804,"endTime":336.06,"body":"well, look, your physics is"},{"startTime":332.804,"endTime":336.06,"body":"okay, so if you want to carry on,"},{"startTime":336.18,"endTime":338.732,"body":"that's absolutely fine, but if"},{"startTime":336.18,"endTime":338.732,"body":"you want to change course, now is"},{"startTime":338.756,"endTime":341.548,"body":"the time to do it. And I"},{"startTime":338.756,"endTime":341.548,"body":"thought, yeah, I'm going to change"},{"startTime":341.604,"endTime":345.452,"body":"course. So what I could do, I"},{"startTime":348.176,"endTime":353.784,"body":"was a student at Durham, and Durham"},{"startTime":353.832,"endTime":356.168,"body":"offered a course that was"},{"startTime":353.832,"endTime":356.168,"body":"called Natural Sciences, which meant"},{"startTime":356.184,"endTime":358.104,"body":"that you could kind of pick"},{"startTime":356.184,"endTime":358.104,"body":"and choose different sciences to"},{"startTime":358.112,"endTime":361.944,"body":"put together to create your"},{"startTime":358.112,"endTime":361.944,"body":"degree package. So I carried on with"},{"startTime":361.952,"endTime":364.792,"body":"the physics because I kind of"},{"startTime":361.952,"endTime":364.792,"body":"had to, otherwise I would have had"},{"startTime":364.816,"endTime":367.352,"body":"to start again, and I really"},{"startTime":364.816,"endTime":367.352,"body":"didn't want to start again. So I"},{"startTime":367.376,"endTime":370.904,"body":"continued to do physics, but I"},{"startTime":367.376,"endTime":370.904,"body":"did archaeological science alongside"},{"startTime":370.952,"endTime":373.912,"body":"it. And then I really enjoyed"},{"startTime":370.952,"endTime":373.912,"body":"doing that. And after that I then"},{"startTime":373.936,"endTime":376.504,"body":"went on to Bradford"},{"startTime":373.936,"endTime":376.504,"body":"University, where I did a master's"},{"startTime":376.552,"endTime":380.116,"body":"and then a PhD in"},{"startTime":376.552,"endTime":380.116,"body":"archaeological science. Still wasn't"},{"startTime":380.148,"endTime":383.796,"body":"really sure what I wanted to"},{"startTime":380.148,"endTime":383.796,"body":"do at the start of my PhD, I thought"},{"startTime":383.868,"endTime":387.508,"body":"I wanted to be an academic,"},{"startTime":383.868,"endTime":387.508,"body":"and by the end I knew that I didn't."},{"startTime":387.684,"endTime":390.388,"body":"I looked at what my supervisor"},{"startTime":387.684,"endTime":390.388,"body":"was doing and thought, no, don't"},{"startTime":390.404,"endTime":392.724,"body":"want your job. He was"},{"startTime":390.404,"endTime":392.724,"body":"constantly sort of having to justify"},{"startTime":392.772,"endTime":396.148,"body":"his existence by applying for"},{"startTime":392.772,"endTime":396.148,"body":"grants to keep his research going"},{"startTime":396.204,"endTime":398.372,"body":"on top of all his teaching"},{"startTime":396.204,"endTime":398.372,"body":"and, you know, preparation work."},{"startTime":398.396,"endTime":401.396,"body":"And I thought, yeah, that"},{"startTime":398.396,"endTime":401.396,"body":"looks like a lot of work. I don't"},{"startTime":401.428,"endTime":402.4,"body":"want to do that."},{"startTime":403.18,"endTime":405.476,"body":"So what is archaeological science?"},{"startTime":405.668,"endTime":409.772,"body":"So archaeology, but from a"},{"startTime":405.668,"endTime":409.772,"body":"scientific point of view. So my PhD,"},{"startTime":409.836,"endTime":414.044,"body":"I was looking at things like"},{"startTime":409.836,"endTime":414.044,"body":"tars and resins that were used as"},{"startTime":414.132,"endTime":418.156,"body":"glues and waterproofing agents"},{"startTime":414.132,"endTime":418.156,"body":"in the middle Stone Age, the Mesolithic"},{"startTime":418.188,"endTime":421.612,"body":"period. And I was using"},{"startTime":418.188,"endTime":421.612,"body":"chemical techniques to analyze what"},{"startTime":421.636,"endTime":425.74,"body":"these things were made of. And"},{"startTime":421.636,"endTime":425.74,"body":"it turned out that they pretty much"},{"startTime":425.78,"endTime":428.78,"body":"all made of the same thing,"},{"startTime":425.78,"endTime":428.78,"body":"which was a tar that had been made"},{"startTime":428.82,"endTime":432.732,"body":"by heating the bark of birch"},{"startTime":428.82,"endTime":432.732,"body":"trees in the absence of air to get"},{"startTime":432.756,"endTime":435.388,"body":"this black, sticky tar. And"},{"startTime":432.756,"endTime":435.388,"body":"they were using it to stick arrowheads"},{"startTime":435.404,"endTime":437.32,"body":"onto shafts and so on."},{"startTime":437.64,"endTime":444.192,"body":"Wow. Wow, that's amazing. Durham was still"},{"startTime":481.346,"endTime":486.354,"body":"very much public school and, you"},{"startTime":486.362,"endTime":489.122,"body":"know, all the kids from public"},{"startTime":486.362,"endTime":489.122,"body":"school had had theater lessons and"},{"startTime":489.146,"endTime":490.994,"body":"speech lessons and all this"},{"startTime":489.146,"endTime":490.994,"body":"kind of thing, which I hadn't had"},{"startTime":491.002,"endTime":493.89,"body":"any of that in my state"},{"startTime":491.002,"endTime":493.89,"body":"school. And so I was up against these"},{"startTime":493.93,"endTime":497.22,"body":"people who knew exactly what"},{"startTime":493.93,"endTime":497.22,"body":"they were doing and I didn't stand"},{"startTime":497.26,"endTime":501.524,"body":"a hope, really. So I didn't do"},{"startTime":497.26,"endTime":501.524,"body":"any sort of drama kind of things."},{"startTime":501.612,"endTime":505.204,"body":"I did join the college choir,"},{"startTime":501.612,"endTime":505.204,"body":"so I did do some singing while I"},{"startTime":505.212,"endTime":509.22,"body":"was there and I'd take my"},{"startTime":505.212,"endTime":509.22,"body":"violin with me, but I actually never"},{"startTime":509.26,"endTime":514.212,"body":"picked it up. So I didn't join"},{"startTime":509.26,"endTime":514.212,"body":"any sort of musical societies while"},{"startTime":514.236,"endTime":517.044,"body":"I was there. I got involved"},{"startTime":514.236,"endTime":517.044,"body":"very much with the scout and guide"},{"startTime":517.092,"endTime":519.86,"body":"group, which is where I met my"},{"startTime":517.092,"endTime":519.86,"body":"husband, and I'm still friends with"},{"startTime":519.9,"endTime":522.724,"body":"loads of people in that group."},{"startTime":519.9,"endTime":522.724,"body":"So kind of my life sort of different,"},{"startTime":522.812,"endTime":525.892,"body":"a slightly different direction"},{"startTime":522.812,"endTime":525.892,"body":"while I was at university. So I said, okay. I also joined the community"},{"startTime":1400.852,"endTime":1404.924,"body":"chorus and, you know, sang."},{"startTime":1400.852,"endTime":1404.924,"body":"And I got involved with a production"},{"startTime":1404.972,"endTime":1408.524,"body":"of a play called Our Town by"},{"startTime":1404.972,"endTime":1408.524,"body":"Thornton Wilder.
