In this episode of the "EACCNY Brexit Musings" series, Daniel Klein Velderman, head of NFIA in NY, and Martijn Schoonewille, Partner & Attorney at LOYENS & LOEFF, discuss the challenges, but also the opportunities that Brexit brings to the table for FinTech parties while highlighting changes which may also benefit and impact US firms.
Daniel Klein Velderman is a Director and the Head of the NETHERLANDS FOREIGN INVESTMENT AGENCY (NFIA) in New York. In this position he informs and assists US based companies on setting up their European operations, expansion or restructuring and introduces them to the relevant Dutch business networks. Daniel's efforts include among others establishing European headquarters, European warehouses and logistics, regional sales offices and R&D operations in all industries. Specific guidance involves taxes & incentives, supply chain, VAT & customs, site selection, recruitment, immigration procedures, work permits and government relations.
Previously, Daniel worked for Deloitte as International Tax Lawyer in the Netherlands as well as in New York. In this role he advised multinational clients, with a focus on group structure optimization and leading the ruling process with the Dutch tax authorities.
He started working for Deloitte in 2009 and has a master’s degree in Tax Law from Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
Martijn Schoonewille, Partner at LOYENS & LOEFF, specializes in advising financial institutions – including banks, investment firms, fund managers, custodians, trading platforms and insurers – on legal and financial regulatory aspects of their businesses and transactions in the Netherlands and, where relevant, the continental European markets. In addition, Martijn acts as counsel to financial institutions, investors and companies in a variety of public and private debt offerings and alternative financing structures.
He is one of the driving forces behind the Loyens & Loeff Tech Academy and has a particular interest in artificial intelligence, smart contracts and DLT uses in financial markets.
With a background in Corporate/M&A, Martijn was seconded in 2008 to an investment bank. From the beginning of 2010 to the end of 2012 he was based in Loyens & Loeff’s London office. Martijn also lectures frequently on financial regulatory topics at Dutch universities and international conferences.
Jildis Deumens, from LOYENS & LOEFF, specializes in Dutch corporate tax on issues in international structuring and restructuring, private equity and M&A transactions. Her clients mainly consist of US multinationals and investment funds (including private equity).
Jildis has a focus on the US market and is currently based in our New York office. She is a member of Loyens & Loeff's international tax services team.
