Colour, Weaving, and the Power of Art
As a dancer and a choreographer I have always been in awe at productions and story themes that weave through performance. As a visual artist, I am in awe at the way that people look at color, light, sound, space, darkness, pattern and more.
As we are approaching the Celtic Colours International Festival this October, I am excited to share the talents of weaving artist extraordinaire, Dianne Quimby. Dianne has produced specialty tartans that have been highlighted in performances, at special events, with the Governor General, and one of her latest patterns, which was celebrated on Sept 3 for the International Day of Square Dance. This special tartan I was gifted last year and I wear with pride, but also with awe at the power of her art to transform.
Today, in preparations for the Community Event with Celtic Colours International Festival, the Music of the Landscape of Cape Breton, on Oct 8th at 2 pm at the Inverness County Center for the Arts, we are exploring the power of weaving as an art form and transformer of the landscape.
Dianne Quimby is sharing her knowledge of color, texture, and patterns through her advanced studies and years of experience in weaving where she is currently earning herself a Master’s degree. It is a delight to be in the presence of such an accomplished and creative artist.
The art of weaving incorporates an imaginative design sense, the skill of a mechanical engineer, the eye of a colourist, and a joy in the creative process. Dianne brings all this and more than 25 years experience to her weaving. She is passionate about creating cloth and loves to pass that passion on to others.
Dianne learned to weave a Nova Scotia Designer Craft Council classes in Halifax and since has studied under Canadian Master weavers Laura Fry and Jane Stafford. Other influences have been Robyn Spady, Janet Dawson and Swedish weaving techniques with Becky Ashenden. She can be found frequently selling and demonstrating at community markets, and in local weaving studios eager to teach others the intricacies of the weaving art. Her weaving can be found around the globe and can be seen at www.wovencloth.ca.
