The common phrase, “The best things in life are free” could very possibly come from Isaiah.
Isaiah 55:1
1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
It is a common theme in Christianity. The Lord said to the woman at the well.
John 4:10-14
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
The water of life is a ‘gift of God.’ It is echoed in Revelation.
Revelation 22:18-19
16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord is teaching us what is of the greatest worth in this life.
Isaiah 55:2
2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
I am sure that weight watchers enjoy that phrase, but it has a deeper meaning than diet.
Isaiah 6:9-10
9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
Notice the two different uses of the word ‘fatness.’ The first deals with both the body and the spirit which comprises the soul, the second only with the body. The first is spiritual, the second temporal. Those who seek things of the spirit are rich in spiritual things, The symbol of fatness means abundance. Those who seek temporal things over spiritual things become gluttonous. They focus on the treasures of the world and close their eyes, their ears, and their heart to spiritual things. Christ said of the wealthy.
Matthew 19:23–24
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Christ teaches us to “incline our ear to him.”
Isaiah 55:3
3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
