If we aren't careful, we fall prey to seeing the gospel as the start of our Christian journey, but not realize that to the New Testament authors, the gospel is also the ongoing way that we learn how to live like Jesus. It is the story of what Jesus did, and the means by which, through the Spirit, we learn what we can and should do.
