I Love Kelowna

Shawna McRae and the tremendous power of enlightened networking

Luke J. Menkes / Shawna McRae Episode 23

I've just joined as a member with Balance Well Being. On July 13 I got the chance to sit down with BWB's Founder and President Shawna McRae and ask her all about it. We talk about the sometimes-lonely world of the Entrepreneur and the tremendous value of regularly connecting with dozens of other like-minded individuals.

SHOW NOTES

  • Shawna worked for TD Canada Trust for 21 years; 15 years as a branch manager.
  • Born and raised in Calgary, moved to Kelowna in 2003 during the big forest fires. Original intention was to stay for just a few years but she fell in love with our city and decided to stay.
  • Almost everyone was affected either directly or indirectly and Shawna was very impressed how the entire city seemed to rally together.
  • During a natural disaster is when you learn there can be a massive difference between insurance policies and insurance companies: what's covered or not, and the way they treat their customers.
  • A real spirit of hope and growth permeated Kelowna in 2004.
  • Financial literacy is crucial to your wealth and peace of mind.
  • Shawna's goal is to help remove the shame and fear surrounding personal money issues.
  • Our culture puts so much emphasis on financial success that it's easy to lose self esteem when things are difficult.
  • One of the greatest causes of romantic relationship stress is financial issues: different spending styles, secrecy, blame for problems that arise. The fundamental problem is poor communication, even before considering related money issues.
  • Make sure you both like and trust the financial professionals you deal with. Don't spend a dime and don't sign anything unless and until those two keys are in place.
  • It's extremely important for financial professionals to watch their language around prospects, especially when they can't currently qualify for what they want. You could be hurting your future prospects if you're not careful.
  • Balance Well–Being is all about healthy relationships with your money, yourself, your business and your local business community. Many social and practical learning events every single month.
  • How volunteering and just being a listening ear to other businesspeople can take a huge weight off your shoulders.
