O.J. Simpson is not a Jew. Adam Sandler taught me that. He also taught me that the holiday that I thought was the Jewish equivalent to Christmas was celebrated over “eight craaaaazy nights.” As I grew up I learned a little about the menorah and latkes, but my highly religious community is not highly diverse. When my niece converted to Judaism, I learned only a tiny bit about that process and that, surprisingly, Chanukah is not the Jewish Christmas. I mean, it’s not the most significant holiday to Jews, like Christmas is to Christians. In this, perhaps my favorite episode so far, the man behind the Don’t Assume Podcast theme song, Cory Mon, and I talk about just how much we don’t know about Chanukah and what our Jewish friends celebrate. My niece’s spiritual leader, Rabbi Bonnie Sharfman, was kind enough to educate Cory and me on history, food, Jewish celebrations, and the salvation of our souls.
