Naming The Enemy: Negative Thinking
SpeakerWelcome back to Todd Talks, Spirit by Design Podcast. I'm grateful you're here today. We're going to talk about something deeply personal, something almost everyone wrestles with, and that is negative thinking. The voice that says, you're not enough, you'll never change, things won't get better. Let's be honest. Negative thinking isn't weakness, it's conditioning. And if you don't control your thoughts, your thoughts will control you.
Purpose And Sources For This Approach
SpeakerToday we're talking about overcoming negative thinking through meditation and prayer. Not in a fluffy way, not in a pretend everything's fine way. Instead, I'll be talking using teachings from the leaders of the Church of Jesus of latter day Saints, some ideas of the Founding Fathers, scriptures from the Book of Mormon and the Bible, the Doctrine and Covenants, personal ideas and stories. Learn to control your mind. Overcome negative thinking in a disciplined, spiritually aligned way. That's the goal today. Because your mind is a battlefield. Love is a battlefield. Okay, not guessing. I shouldn't do that. But whoever wins the battle shapes your future. This isn't about pretending hard things don't exist. It's about learning to shape, or as I like to say, design, the life you want to live. After all, this is ToddTalks: Spirit by Design. Build your thoughts, strengthen your spirit, live intentionally. And remember, you don't overcome overcome negative thinking by trying harder. You overcome it by aligning
Flying Through Storms As A Mental Model
Speakerharder. If you've ever flown through weather, I have many times. Pretty cool. Real weather. You know something most people don't. The storm on the outside is manageable. The storm in your head, that's what gets you. See, I learned about flying through storms the same way every pilot does. Step by step, line by line, learning to read and trust the instruments because flying demands precision and calm. Storms arrive, but the challenges often come quickly. Ice builds up on the wings, visibility drops, engine gauges demand attention. Engines flame out or catch on fire. You have two choices. One, implement your training calmly and efficiently. Or two, emotionally. However, flying doesn't reward emotion. It rewards discipline. And today we're talking about that exact thing. How to overcome negative thinking through meditation and prayer. Because your mind, like an aircraft, will go wherever it's pointed.
Instruments Versus Feelings
SpeakerWhen you read the writings of the American Founding Fathers, they didn't use the phrase negative thinking the way we do today, but they spoke extensively about fear, despair, corruption of the mind, loss of virtue, tyranny born from internal weakness. To them, the real danger wasn't just external enemies, it was internal decay in thought, character, and moral confidence. That internal decay, that decay of thought and character and moral confidence, you see it. You see it happening today. And that's why it's so important that you learn to personally overcome your negative thinking to build and strengthen your moral compass, your moral confidence. Build and strengthen your character. Because your mind is a battlefield. The lie sounds real at eight or ten thousand feet. There can be a moment in instrument flight training where your senses lie to you. It's called the leans or spatial disorientation. Spatial D. You feel like you're banking left or right. Your body swears you're descending or turning left or right. But your instruments say that you're flying straight and level. If you trust your feelings over your instruments, you can enter an out-of-control descent, a death spiral, a spin, and not even know it. Many planes have crashed that way. Spiritually, negative thinking works the same
Power Love And A Sound Mind
Speakerway. I'm failing, I'm not cut out for this. I've messed up too much. It feels true. But it's not. It's just your mind trying to tell you lies. Because feelings are not a fixed reality. Feelings are not instruments, they are tools. They can mislead. Paul, the apostle, taught, for God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. See a sound mind, it's like a calibrated attitude indicator. It tells you what's real, not what feels real. Your feelings are so dramatic. Flying through weather requires effort to maintain your equilibrium. So does thinking clearly. President Russell M. Nelson taught, the Lord loves effort because effort brings rewards that can't come without it. Changing our thinking, changing your thinking, requires effort. Spiritual effort. Negative thoughts are not neutral. They influence your feelings, your decisions, your actions, and ultimately
The Adversary And Distorted Thoughts
Speakeryour faith. Most people think the problem is having negative thoughts. It's not. It really isn't. The problem is agreeing with those thoughts. Again, what Paul said, for God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. A sound mind is not one dominated by fear, shame, or despair. It is steady, anchored, governed by truth. Listen to that again. A sound mind is governed by truth. It is steady. Fear-based thinking, self-condemnation, hopeless narratives, those aren't from God. The adversary, now he works relentlessly on your mind. He wants you bound in despair. Satan desires to bind us. He goeth up and down, to and fro in the earth, seeking to destroy the souls of men. One way he seeks to destroy is through discouragement and distorted thinking. So what do we do about it? How do we overcome discouragement and distorted thinking that Satan is trying to foist upon you?
Spiritual Meditation Defined
SpeakerOne method that we can use in what this podcast is teaching you today is meditation. Meditation and prayer. Working together. Meditation is pondering with the spirit. Because we're talking about spiritual meditation here. When we hear the word meditation, we sometimes think of emptying the mind. That's not the type of meditation I subscribe to. Spiritual meditation is different. It is filling the mind with truth. In aviation, icing conditions don't announce themselves politely. Sometimes they build slowly, almost quietly. Sometimes they slam into you. But negative thinking does the same thing. You don't wake up destroyed, you drift there. Meditation is checking your instruments. Spiritual meditation is pondering your thoughts. In Psalm 104, 34 it says, My meditation of him shall be sweet. In aviation, your scan you scan gauges repeatedly. In your spiritual life, you scan for the truth repeatedly. In the Book of Mormon The book of Enos it says, "While I was thus struggling in the spirit, the voice of the Lord came into my mind". Into my mind. That's where God recalibrates you. Meditation isn't zoning out. It's leveling your wings. It's pausing long enough to ask, what's actually true right now? God
Creating Space To Hear God
Speakerspeaks there, but here's the problem. Most people don't create space to hear them. To hear him. We scroll, we rush, we react. And then we wonder why our thoughts feel so chaotic. King David wrote, "My meditation of him shall be sweet. I will be glad in the Lord". Meditation in the gospel sense means pondering. Intentional, quiet reflection on God's word. President Henry B. Eyring said, "When we ponder, the Holy Ghost can confirm and teach truth". Enos in the Book of Mormon wrote, "and my soul hungered, and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer, and while I was thus struggling in the spirit, behold, the voice of the Lord came into my mind". Once again, notice that phrase. Meditation creates space for that voice. Meditation is mental alignment. You slow down long enough to separate what is just noise from what is from God. You see, prayer then coupled with meditation, replaces lies with light and truth. Negative thinking thrives in isolation. Prayer destroys isolation. Jesus said, Ask and it shall
Prayer Breaks Isolation
Speakerbe given you, seek and you shall find. Prayer isn't weakness, it's humility. It's saying, God, here's the thought that is plaguing me. Is this true? Cause a lot of your negative thoughts are exaggerations. I always fail. I'm not enough. I'll never change. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland once taught, you don't quit. Or don't you quit? You keep walking, you keep trying. There is help and happiness ahead. Sometimes negative thoughts say, God is disappointed in you. You've failed too much. Compare that to this scripture. Philippians 4.13. "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me". Or 2 Nephi 2.25, "men are that they might have joy." Negative thinking often thrives in isolation. Prayer breaks isolation. And the thought does not and if the thought does not lead to joy or peace, guess what? It's not true. Prayer is not merely reporting to God, it is receiving truth from God after your words. You pause and listen.
Building A Daily System
SpeakerAfter your words you pause and listen. Joy is our divine design. Prayer realigns us with that truth. Prayer is not surrendering control. It's requesting better guidance. Negative thoughts isolate you. Prayer reconnects you. I've prayed in cockpits and closets, in the light, in the dark, in silence. I've prayed when the only thing louder than the engine was my own doubt. And every time clarity didn't come as panic, it came as calm. The Lord speaks in a still small voice. That still small voice from the Lord, you won't hear it and you won't hear that voice in mental chaos. Meditation calms the mental chaos so you can hear the still small voice. So let's build a system. This is, after all, design your best life, design your spirit, right? Because design beats emotion. So here's your daily structure. Number one, catch the thought. Name it. Not vaguely, specifically. I'm failing as a father. I'm behind in life. I can't handle this. Write it down. Compare it to Scripture. Does that thought align with God's word? Philippians 4 8 teaches, "whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, think on these things." So if the thought is not true, honest, just pure, or lovely, it ain't from God. Doctrine Covenants 6:36 says, "look unto me in every thought, doubt not, fear not." Every thought, not just the comfortable ones. Ask, does this thought produce faith or fear? If it produces fear, bring it to Christ, so he can change it and provide calm. Replace it intentionally with truth. For example, negative thought, I always fail, can be replaced with the truth, I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me. Or, from the Book of Mormon, by small and simple things are great things brought to pass. Translation, progress
Weakness Becomes Strength
Speakeris often small. That doesn't mean it's insignificant. Growth is often quiet. Your life is not failing, it's forming. That replacement process, that's meditation plus prayer working together. These thoughts, these negative thoughts, they're weakness. But weakness is not the end. Most people collapse mentally. They focus on their weakness. In pilot training, we practice weak areas so they become strong. We introduce stalls on purpose. We induce instability so that we learn recovery. In Ether it states, "if men come unto me, I will show unto them their weakness, and I will make weak things become strong." Weakness is not proof that you're broken, it's proof you're unfinished. Weakness isn't proof you shouldn't be flying, it's proof you're learning. President Gordon B Hinckley encouraged cultivating a spirit of quiet optimism, not loud hype. Quiet optimism is born in quiet places. That comes from stillness. You hear it in disciplined stillness. We cannot hear a still small voice in a constantly noisy mind. Meditation and prayer calm the noise. They don't eliminate challenges, they change how we interpret them.
Think Celestial Not Temporary
SpeakerSo President Russell M Nelson emphasized repeatedly the importance of thinking celestial. Negative thinking is often temporary thinking. Celestial thinking is eternal thinking. The Lord said, invites, look into me in every thought, doubt not, fear not. That phrase in every thought. It's not passive spirituality, it's active mental discipleship. It's active training. When negative thoughts arise, we don't shame ourselves, we turn those thoughts over to Christ. So let me leave you with this promise from the Book of Mormon. Again, if men come unto me, I will show unto them their weakness, I will make weak things become strong unto them. Negative thinking often focuses on weakness. Christ focuses on transformation. Meditation allows us to hear him, prayer allows us to trust him, and scripture allows us to anchor in him. And slowly, sometimes quietly, the mind changes, and when the mind changes, the heart follows. According to the Founding Fathers, the challenge in modern times of negative thinking is this: it distorts judgment, it weakens virtue, it makes people susceptible to manipulation. You see that all the time today. It erodes
Freedom Begins With Disciplined Minds
Speakerliberty from within. The belief freedom begins in the mind. If the mind is undisciplined, freedom cannot survive. Therefore, people that want to remain free need to learn these steps to recognize truth, overcome negative thinking, and follow the truth the Lord unfolds to you. So if today's episode resonated with you, share it with someone who may need encouragement. Take five minutes today. Sit in stillness. No phone, no noise. Open your scriptures, write down one recurring negative thought, pray about it, ask if it's true. Then search for a verse that contradicts it. Meditate on that verse slowly, intentionally. Because your mind is not meant to be a prison. It's meant to be a temple. Offer a real prayer and listen. Because heaven speaks to minds that make room for it. So until next time, keep seeking light.
Practical Challenge And Closing Promise
