How To Use Visualization To Build An Abundant Life With Christ

Visualization gets lumped in with “manifesting,” hustle culture, and wishful thinking, but I want to reclaim it as something much older and much holier. When we understand it correctly, visualization isn’t about trying to force the universe to hand us whatever we want. It’s about aligning our mind, heart, and actions with God’s will until our life starts to reflect what He has already promised faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. 

We walk through the scriptural pattern that God gives vision before He gives reality, then connect it to faith as “things not seen.” From there, we get practical about what “abundant life” really means. It’s more than money. It’s peace, joy, health, purpose, strong marriages, spiritual gifts, and wise financial stewardship that gives you power to bless others. That definition changes what we visualize: not possessions first, but becoming the kind of disciple who can be trusted with more. 

We also bring in neuroscience and elite performance: athletes, pilots, and emergency training show how mental rehearsal prepares you for pressure before it arrives. Spiritually, that’s prayer, temple worship, scripture study, and covenants training our instincts so we don’t invent faith in a crisis, we rely on the faith we’ve practiced. We close with a simple daily exercise and one hard question that keeps it real: after you visualize, what’s the next faithful step you’ll take today?

Welcome And The Big Question

Welcome back to Todd Talks, Spirit by Design, where I help you to navigate and prepare yourself spiritually for the second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Today we're exploring how eternal principles can help you shape an extraordinary life. We're talking about a subject that has become incredibly popular in business, athletics, psychology, and self-improvement. I've talked about it before in different aspects. Today I'm talking about it from a spiritual aspect, and that is visualization.

Vision Before Reality In Scripture

Some people call it manifesting, others call it mental rehearsal. In the Air Force, we called it chair flying, where we would prep for a flight. Athletes call it performance imagery, but as disciples of Jesus Christ, we need to ask a better question. Can visualization actually be a gospel principle? My answer is yes. Yes, it is. Um, if we understand it correctly. Visualization isn't about trying to force the universe to give us whatever we want, it's about aligning our minds, hearts, and actions with God's will until our lives begin reflecting his promises. Today we'll explore what the scriptures, modern prophets, neuroscience, and even elite performers teach about developing an abundant life through righteous visualization. Always have to have the spiritual angle when we're talking about this, because many people can mistake visualization as not being something of God. But I honestly believe that it follows universal law, and God follows universal law. So God always gives vision before he gives reality. What does this mean? Throughout scripture, God rarely reveals the whole journey. Instead, he gives a vision, he gives an idea, a first step in the process. Nephi saw America hundreds of years before it existed. Joseph in Egypt saw seven years of plenty and seven years of famine. The brother of Jared saw the premortal Christ before the Savior came to earth. Joseph Smith saw the first vision years before the restoration of the gospel transformed the world. Why? Because vision precedes creation. We believe that. All things are created spiritually before they are created physically. Even Genesis says, in the beginning, before there was light, there was purpose, before there was earth, there was a design. God is a creator. As his children, we also create. We create families, businesses, faith, habits, character, service. But every creation begins inside your mind. We create spiritually before we create physically. The law of spiritual visualization is not pretending, it's rehearsing truth. Hebrews 11 teaches that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence

Faith Sees Before Eyes Do

of things not seen. Notice that phrase, things not seen. See, faith always sees before the eyes do. President Russell M. Nelson has taught that faith requires action before blessings become visible. Faith imagines righteous possibilities because God has promised them. That's completely different from selfish fantasy. Let me give you a more tangible physical example. When you start working out, you want to lose weight. You have to have faith that it's possible. You eat right, eat lower calorie, work out, and you start to lose weight. But it takes weeks or even months for it to visibly show in your body. Everything else is happening internally. So visualization asks, what would my life look like if I fully trusted Christ? You see, abundance is more than money. When people hear abundance, they usually think money, cars, riches, homes, vacations. But the Lord defines abundance differently. John 10 10 says, I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly. Abundance includes peace, joy, health, strong

What Abundance Really Means

marriages, purpose, confidence, spiritual gifts, financial stewardship, influence for good. Abundance is having enough to bless others. Let me say that again. Abundance is having enough to bless others. It's not a selfish, not a selfish act. President Gordon B. Hinckley once observed that the Lord wants his people to become capable, self-reliant, generous, and useful. Notice the progression. God blesses us so we can become blessings to others. So modern neuroscience confirms something remarkable. Your brain doesn't completely distinguish between imagined or imagination or thoughts, imagined actions, or repeatedly practiced actions. In other words, it doesn't distinguish between what you think and imagine to be true and what actually is true that you can visually see with your eyes. Professional

Neuroscience And Elite Mental Rehearsal

athletes have used visualization for decades. I remember there was a study done on basketball players. They were divided into three groups. One group practiced three free throws every day for hours every day. The second group for a month visualized shooting three free throws and making the baskets every day for a month. The third group did nothing. So here's what uh what came happened. The group that shot and practiced every day improved by 24%. The group that only in their mind practiced for a month improved by 23.9%. And the group that didn't do anything, they didn't improve at all. Olympic skiers mentally ski the course hundreds of times. Pilots, when we're learning to fly, especially, and when we're going to fly a low level, going to do something new, or the Thunderbirds, the Blue Angels, when they're flying their routine, before they fly it, we chair fly it. We practice in our minds exactly where our hands go, what altitude, what heading, all the different things. We mentally fly the entire flight before ever getting into the cockpit. We rehearse emergency procedures by practicing over and over in our mind and talking about what we would do if they ever happened. You don't rise to occasions. I've learned that you fall to the level of your preparation. Visualization builds preparation before reality hits. Spiritually, prayer is rehearsal. Temple worship is rehearsal. Scripture study is rehearsal. Every covenant you make prepares you for future experiences. God prepares us mentally before he prepares us physically.

Prayer And Covenants As Rehearsal

So the danger of self-centered manifestation, the world teaches, if you believe hard enough, you'll get whatever you desire. That's not Christianity. Jesus prayed, Not my will, but thine be done. So the Savior had perfect visualization. He saw himself accomplishing the Father's work, not his own agenda. Visualization without surrender becomes pride. Visualization with surrender becomes discipleship. Ask yourself, am I trying to get God to bless my plans or am I allowing God to transform my plans? Am I in allowing God to transform me? That's the question. When you use visualization to grow, to become the person God wants you to become so that you can help others, you're aligning yourself with His plan. Those are very different things than self-centered, just give me what I want. Visualization through the light of Christ helps us recognize truth, goodness, and possibility. When we visualize ourselves becoming more like Christ, we're cooperating with heaven. Imagine yourself being patient with your children, leading your family in prayer,

Manifesting Vs Surrender To God

paying off debt, serving your neighbor, sharing the gospel, losing unhealthy weight, building strength, treating your spouse with greater kindness. These aren't fantasies, these are invitations. In fact, I've been doing this for the last two and a half weeks. I'm down 14 pounds and going. God delights in helping his children become what he already knows they can be. When Captain Soly safely landed U.S. Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, people called it a miracle. It was, but it was also preparation. Years of training, countless emergency simulations, thousands of mental rehearsals. When disaster struck, he didn't invent a response. He remembered one. Spiritually, life's emergencies are the same. When temptation arrives, when illness strikes, when tragedy comes, we don't suddenly develop faith. We rely on the faith we've practiced. Visualization is practicing discipleship before the test arrives.

Vision Boards That Start With Prayer

So a lot of times in visualization we use vision boards, right? Vision boards can be helpful, but don't make one without first praying. Ask Heavenly Father, who do you want me to become? What gifts should I develop? How can I better serve? What talents have I buried? What fears am I allowing to limit me? Then create visual reminders, not just possessions, but of becoming. Your vision board should be about who you want to become. You can always have the financial rewards on there, but by becoming who you're meant to become, the financial rewards are there to help you serve better. Family goals, mission statements, health goals, financial stewardship, acts of service, character traits, who do you want to become? These are all things that the Lord wants you to do. Visualization, though, without action, becomes just entertainment. James taught faith without works is dead. Every visualization should end with one question. What is the next faithful step? You want better health? Take a walk. Start today. Don't wait till tomorrow. The day that never comes is someday. Someday never comes. I'm gonna get healthy someday. I'm gonna get financially free someday. I'm gonna help others someday. I'm gonna do my ministry someday. Someday never comes. You want financial freedom?

The Next Faithful Step Today

Skip those unnecessary purchases. Want the stronger testimony? Bear it. Read the scriptures. Want a happier marriage? Date your wife or your husband. Just like you did thirty years ago. Make them feel special because they are. Small actions repeated consistently become extraordinary. It changes lives. So here's a simple exercise you can practice every morning. Step one, begin with prayer, invite the Holy Ghost, read one scripture about faith. Picture yourself becoming the disciple Christ wants you to become. Imagine specific situations, and see yourself responding with Christ-like confidence. Ask, what would Jesus have me do today? Write down three actions, then do them. That's gospel visualization, not wishful thinking. Faith in motion. So imagine your life one year from today. Forty pounds healthier, debt shrinking, marriage stronger, confidence growing, temple attendance increasing, daily scripture study becoming normal, consistent, your children seeing Christ in you, friends noticing peace in your countenance. Now ask yourself, what kind of person would I have to become for that future to exist? Then, here's a crazy thought: become that person. One decision at a time. God usually changes people before he changes circumstances. Visualization isn't magic, it's preparing your heart to be on the frequency

Morning Practice And One-Year Picture

to recognize and receive what God has already promised to faithful disciples. Although David A. Bednar is taught in many settings, God's blessings often come through consistent covenant keeping and faithful action, not passive expectation. This week, spend ten minutes doing the visualization. Act on the first prompting the Spirit gives you. Receive and act. That's what I'm trying to teach you. Receive prompting, act on it. Because abundant life isn't something you stumble into, it's something you intentionally build with Jesus Christ as both architect and cornerstone. He wants you to become financially free, faithfully strong, spiritually devout, and he will bless you in all areas of your life, including very much financially, because as you become a strong disciple, you'll strive to help others. And that is why visualization for abundance is so important. So you can become an instrument
