Leah Frazier

In this episode, right at the closing of May's Mental Health Awareness Month, we tap the shoulder of highly-acclaimed 'Black Joy' author Tracey Michae'l Lewis-Giggetts. In an inspiring story, Tracey discusses how she "PR'd" a simple guest essay on Black Joy for the Washington Post, into a globally renowned best-selling title -- from one of the top publishers in the world.

In discussing 'Black Joy' and how to find joy during traumatic or discouraging times -- Tracey's candid depiction and characterization of how the Black community accesses joy as its own form of resistance -- is always prime for discussion. Later on, Tracey and Leah dive deeper into the simple concept of utilizing the breath (or deep breathing) as a variation of joy. Known for its healing properties, the concept of breath work is widely accessed during meditation, yoga, mindfulness and many other global modalities as a tool to battling many of the causes of mental health disturbances or mental distress.
