Coal mines are prevalent in our area of Pennsylvania. You can protect yourself against mine subsidence, but - believe or not - only a low 8 PERCENT of people actually do. Your house could be a little as 15 feet above an abandoned coal mine, and you wouldn't even know it. Mine subsidence is not gradual. It happens quickly, with very little warning!
