Generosity is not a virtue that is actively pursued in our culture. By and large, wealth is the virtue, not generosity. Even for billionaire philanthropists, the wealth comes first, then the generosity. We are much better at defending what is ours than at giving it away, and not only in the area of finances. Many of us feel starved for time, desperate for rest, or depleted of relational energy. But this passage makes little of our poverty. In the midst of our lack, God is giving generously, abundantly, and cheerfully, to supply every good thing. Most of which we didn’t even know was missing!
