and now the sleepwalk worldwide podcast. Here are your hosts, brandon staton and tyler. What's up everybody, welcome to sleepwalk the SleepHawk Worldwide Podcast. This is Sleep Dog with the Big Hawk.
Speaker 2What's up everybody? It's the Big Hawk Beautiful day. We have a great pod, a few things to talk about. It's a great time of the year and, yeah, let's get this pod going.
Speaker 1Yeah, last time my sleep dog almost woke the kid up. So I'm out here on the back porch now. Looks like I'm out here in the Great Wolf Lodge or something the wild wilderness but no, it's just my deck. I got a TV out here, got a couple dogs running around Just ate some food, ready to go to sleep. But before I do I'll put you guys to sleep. We got UNC versus Memphis. We got UNC versus Memphis. We'll talk about that game. We have Tony Bennett retiring. I think that's an interesting angle on the state of the NCAA, the reasons he gave for his very sort of sudden retirement.
Speaker 1It seemed Commanders win again today. As we're recording, they're 5-2. Mets-dodgers about to start here in about 45 minutes. Hopefully they can send that one back to Game 7. I know I'm the only one on here. In about 45 minutes. Hopefully, hopefully, I can send out back to game seven. I know I'm the only one on here that cares about that. Nba season starts Tuesday. Sleep dogs. Fantasy draft is after this. Part of the reason I'm out here is because I got to do something to stay awake, because draft starts at nine o'clock. Wow, yeah, and a lot, of, a lot of big college football over the weekend, so maybe we'll get into that. But let's start where everybody wants to start. Unc looked pretty good against Memphis. We talked on the last pod that didn't get published because Sleep Dog messed it up about. You know how the game wouldn't affect the rankings because it's an exhibition, but no, rj Seth Trimble looked like MJ. I mean, I thought there were a lot of positives out of that one. What about you, t?
Speaker 2Yeah, I thought it was. Overall it was a good game. I thought we played well, went on the road. What I really like about it it was a road win. Obviously it doesn't count. This is an exhibition game. But you know, seth Trimble played unbelievable.
Speaker 2But I've always been a Seth fan and it's not like I was surprised. I've always thought that his offensive game is there. I just think that, you know, once he gets that more playing time and that confidence up, I think the scoring I always thought the scoring was going to come. Like I said again, I think he's one of the best perimeter defenders in college basketball, if not the best. He does a lot of things for you know the teams in the past that didn't really show up on the stat sheet. Obviously, you can't ignore his presence and what he did against Memphis, I thought that was unbelievable. The other thing I will say you know we had a lot of different contributions. You know I thought that Elliot Cadeau when I'm looking at his stat sheet, I thought he had a good game. What I like most about Cadeau is he had 13 assists and three turnovers. That's a very good assist to turnover ratio and I always like it when he's dishing, getting to the hoop, driving, drawing the defense, kicking it out and hitting guys. I thought he played really well and I don't want to get too caught up on his shooting just because I think what he does you know from a basketball player I think the best things that he does getting to the rim, finding teammates, his passing ability and finishing through contact. But my next thing is you know we'll talk about this I thought Jalen Withers actually provided us with some good minutes. I know he got in foul trouble, but when I'm looking at it he was second on the team in rebounds.
Speaker 2Kate Tyson, we'll talk about him in a sec, but it looks like Jalen Withers, like I've kind of talked about, he could be a five-man for this team and I think he has an athleticism to guard bigger players and mix it up a little bit. I still think we haven't seen the best of him and I think that's going to come and he's going to be one of those players that hopefully. You know, I think he's extremely talented. As the year goes on, I think he's really going to develop and be a good player. But we'll talk about it.
Speaker 2Kate Tyson, I think he's a much better shooter. Well, hell, I hope he is, but he's a much better shooter than what he was against Memphis. Let's see here he was one for six from the three. Listen, he's a much better shooter than that. But I will say he did rebound. He led the team in rebounds with nine rebounds and we talked about it. This team is going to need somebody to step up and rebound. We didn't have anybody in the double digits. When it comes to rebounding, listen, if you're a bench player, you're somebody wanting more minutes on this team. Rebound, I guarantee you'll get it.
Speaker 2The other two are freshmen, drake Powell and N Jackson. I think N's a much better player than what he showed. It's his first college game on the road. I don't think that he had his well. He didn't have his best outing. He's a much better player than what he displayed. And the other guy, drake Powell listen, he led the team in the plus plus minus stat with 14. I think he's going to be a heck of a player and the more I watch him, just the more excited I get about him. I think he has a high ceiling. I think he's one of those players that rebounds, defends, and he's a bigger player. I just think he's going to be a big time for this team.
Speaker 2As we go on, uh and we'll talk about it now if there's some things we need to clean up sleep, uh, obviously, rj being out. This team's a totally different team with rj and they didn't really close the game. Uh, you know all that well which is expected. You're on the road in memphis, um, you know, let me see here. We had six turnovers in the final five minutes. That's not great.
Speaker 2You can expect that when you're up big kind of late, you're trying to preserve the lead a little bit. Then Memphis starts to mix it up a little bit defensively, throw some things at you, turn up their defense. You're going to have a few turnovers. Obviously, with RJ that's not going to be the case. He's going to be another ball handler and also a guy that you're going to want to have the ball in his hands late in the game. He can get you a bucket, but also he's automatic from the free throw line. So those are just some of my rapid thoughts from what I saw in the exhibition and I really don't want to get too caught up in it because it is a game that, although it is meaningful and I thought it was really important for this team. I like the way they played. You know it still doesn't count, but it's good to get that. You know that game experience and kind of get that game feel here as the season approaches.
Speaker 1Yeah, man, I think I had two big thoughts coming out of the game. One was you know, I love Seth Trimble too. I mean it sure is good that he stayed right or came back, or however you want to look at it, and I started thinking I was like dude, I know, or at least I thought he was a good player If he can be like this good. And RJ, you know, I get that they are sort of. You know, he's not going to put up 33 most nights, especially if RJ's playing, but if those guys can go out and get you 35, 40 plus a night, that's a big deal.
Speaker 1On top of that, one guy that you didn't mention is Jalen Washington. I thought he played great. My biggest thing was is he going to lack a little bit of confidence? Is he going to feel pressure, all these sorts of things. Granted, it's tough to feel pressure when there's really nobody there behind you. I don't think, or at least I would hope not, but there is a lot of expectation on him, or at least I would hope not, but there is a lot of expectation on him. Memphis had that kid, was it Dame Danger, or whatever his name is Dame Danger yep, yeah, where the hell is his name?
Speaker 1I was looking for him. Oh there it is Dame Danger. Yeah, I like it For some reason I was just thinking that was like a rapper name instead of some sort of indication of probably where he's from. So anyway, I was looking for it on the box score. I was like, where is it at? Anyhow, the cultural is, I think, what I was looking for there.
Speaker 1But yeah, I thought Washington looked great. Six of seven from the floor, eight of eight from a free throw no, that was Seth, he's three or four from the line hit a couple threes. Like I said, didn't get double-digit rebounds, but I felt like that was one of the takeaways for me. Yeah, they had 21 turnovers as a team. That's a number you want to see go down. That is a first game of the year exhibition.
Speaker 1Don't have your floor leader. There are a number of reasons why. You know I don't put a ton of stock into that. Um, but they looked ready, man. They look like they're ready to open the season. They look like there's there's, um, no glaring sort of weaknesses or question marks. Um, you know, we we were talking last week about where we thought they were going to come out in the poll. It looks like they're going to be nine or they are nine. So, like we said a couple weeks back, a month or so ago, we'll find out who. They are pretty quick with some of the games they've got on the slate, but I think your early indication has got to be positive coming out of that.
Speaker 2Absolutely, and Sleep. I've got one question for you. It's a little, it's a brain buster what was seth timble, seth trembles. Career high in a game that counted like excluding exhibitions. What do you think his career high as a tar hill was prior? Just in games, I mean, obviously this doesn't count that's count.
Speaker 1My gut says I'll take the under but 15.
Speaker 2So you're close, it was actually 12. Okay, damn, that was the other number, season high last year, career high, but obviously this doesn't count. But that just shows you how well he's playing when he gets more minutes in his confidence. I'm a big fan of Seth Trimble and I hope he has an unbelievable year. Obviously, we're all glad he didn't transfer. Obviously, it looks like it's going to work out, but no, that was a good start to the exhibition.
Speaker 1Obviously, it doesn't count, but I like the way the guys played overall.
College Basketball Coaching Landscape Discussion
Speaker 1Yeah, absolutely. I think in that one the biggest thing that occurs to me in terms of what stock you put into it I think we had more to lose in terms of expectation, maybe in terms of I mean, chemistry is the wrong word but in terms of getting off on the wrong foot right, I think just Memphis had everything to gain and we had a lot to lose by taking that game on and to come and put up 84 without RJ, I mean not shooting 50% from the floor. It's not like we were lights out. Eight of 24 from three is okay, I mean it's fine. It wasn't what I think we want to shoot. But yeah, I think we're in a good spot and kind of a segue in here into this Tony Bennett situation.
Speaker 1It's like we keep saying, we keep saying it in football, which we'll talk about a little later about at the end of the day, there's some good teams on the schedule, there's some highly ranked teams that are returning players and all this sort of stuff. But you know, the current climate is there's just a lot of parity man. There's a lot of guys going a lot of different places. You're going to lose games. You're going to lose games that, on paper. You're sort of thinking like why are we, you know, why are we Alabama, losing to Vanderbilt? Why are we, you know, whatever Anybody losing to Carolina football, you know?
Speaker 1So I think that's the biggest thing, is from an expectation standpoint. You know we're in the middle of the pack. I think we're going to be a good team. You know we play some good teams early on and you know you're going to play in the ACC. A lot of teams, a lot of stuff to play for, a lot of good athletes, a lot of stuff opened up the transfer portal. So where the season goes is tough to tell, but I think in the current landscape I feel like we have a cohesive team that looks comfortable together and I think that's the best thing you can have in college basketball right now.
Speaker 2I think that, obviously, what I take away also is it was a big win just because RJ wasn't playing and other guys had to step up, even though I think that this team will rely heavily on RJ. We do have the capability if something were to go. Guys got their confidence up, but I would still like to see N Jackson and Drake Powell really progress and get some heavy minutes in some of these exhibition games, because I just think we're going to need their size and, with their potential, I think they would be a huge contribution to this team if they really grew and become what we think they can be 100%.
Speaker 1So anyway, that brings us to this Tony Bennett situation, speaking of ACC basketball. Over the weekend he just kind of announced, what seemed like out of nowhere that he was retiring. And on its face, you're like dude, I wonder what's going on? Like, is he sick? And said nope, not health related, like uh-oh. Well then you know who's he seeing on the side right, like what's going on here? Uh, well, it turns out it wasn't that either. Apparently he said that it was the current state of this nil and I thought, you know, I won't break down all the comments he made.
Speaker 1I've always liked Tony Bennett. I mean, dude, virginia is an absolute snooze-a-thon in football and basketball to watch on TV, but I've always liked that guy. I think he seems like a class act good dude. Took a relatively obscure, you know old school powerhouse and kind of brought him back into relevant. I mean, he won a national championship at Virginia and made them. I know they lost as a 16 versus a one seed, but the fact that they've gone to the tournament multiple times as a one seed speaks a lot to you know just what a great coach I think he was at this point. But I just thought he was spot on man, with all this stuff about the NIL, and you're seeing Saban leave and you see, like gosh, who was the other one?
Speaker 1Recently there was a football guy, I think that's gone, like it makes me feel like there's no chance Mack Brown comes back. I feel like there's a lot of that going on. I have no, by the way, that comes from zero source except my imagination, but it's just true. Man, all this stuff is changing and you've got to think that some of these guys are like dude. This is just the other guy was thinking his hardball getting out of town. I just think this thing changes everything and without any regulations. Dude, it's probably just such a headache. I bet, if you, if you got coach williams I mean he probably, I think he was ahead of the curve it's probably like dude, there's just too much.
Speaker 1You know what's going on, so I don't know well sleep.
Speaker 2I would tell you this I, I do think that the tony bennett, uh, I don't think he's on par with the saban, uh, and even in my estimations I don't think he's on par with Mack Brown. Uh, yeah, I, I will say Mack Brown is much older and you know, tony, it wouldn't be surprised if Mack I mean he just wants to like, listen, guys, I'm getting older. I, I get that the Tony Bennett situation I I have.
Speaker 2I have, uh, kind of a you. I go back and forth, you know, with some of my feelings about this. You know, I'm not really sure how I'd feel if I was a recruit or a transfer that came into Virginia, that Tony Bennett had recruited and then all of a sudden, two weeks before the season, he retires. I think I would be, I would have mixed emotions about that. I think I would be, I would have mixed emotions about that. And I will say that, if you look at it, he brought so Ron Sanchez, who was the head coach of Charlotte basketball last year, came back to Virginia, who's been a lifetime assistant with Tony Bennett, been with him everywhere. He came back to Virginia and it looks like if I were to do some digging you know, it's a shock to everybody, but it looks like the writing might have been on the wall. It might have been like hey, you know what, I'm going to turn this program around to you. I'm going to retire a couple weeks before the season. That way Virginia doesn't have the time to open up a coaching church and you can take over the team. That's my guess. Have the time to open up a coaching search and you can take over the team. That's my guess. Now what I will say is he's had a lot of success. He's taken Virginia into a powerhouse.
Speaker 2Obviously, their style of basketball is not my favorite. He's had a lot of success at Virginia and done a lot of good things. However, in the last seven seasons he's only won six NCAA title games, and all those title games came in the 2019 National Championship run, so he was bounced pretty early. His style leads to upsets. The reason I say that is because when you play slow and you always play with a lead, whenever you get behind and you have to play fast, it's almost like you don't know how to play basketball at times, and also the new landscape of basketball. If you look at Tony Bennett's style, you will see guys that get better year after year after year. He plays a slow game, also with player development, and he does a very good job at that. He's taken a lot of players that don't have the talent or the high ceilings as some of these five-star recruits and turned them into really good players through player development over the years. Now, with the new college basketball landscape that has changed, it seems like you're trying to have to get a whole new roster year after year and you can't really develop the players like you used to. That could have weighed on him, but he wasn't having the success that he had pre-NIL and that could weigh on him. But ultimately, listen, he's done a great job at Virginia. He will more than likely probably end up being a Hall of Fame coach at some point.
Speaker 2I don't know if I put him he's not in the categories of Mike Krzyzewski, roy Williams or Bill Self in my book. I think those guys are a tier ahead of him, no question. But he deserves to have a lot of credit and if he wants to retire a couple weeks before the season this is how he wants to go out then he's earned that right. But also we have the right to talk about it and have mixed emotions if he goes out like that. Uh, but uh, yeah, it's uh, it was a good run for virginia.
Speaker 2I'm very interested to see where this team goes post tony bennett. I definitely feel like this team took a step back because he's such a good coach. I don't think that, you know, we'll find out if Sanchez is going to be you know the guy but definitely losing Tony Bennett hurts Virginia basketball and also it hurts the whole ACC in general. I mean, it is a very unique team to prepare for and I think there's so many styles in the ACC. If you look at it you know Florida State beat you up defensively, grinds you down. Virginia slow you down, beat you up defensively, and then North Carolina get out, run and gun. All those different styles, I think, prepare you for the NCAA tournament. So I do think that losing a Bennett is going to affect the league in some capacity and especially it's going to hurt Virginia basketball.
Speaker 1Yeah, you bring up a great point too about the two weeks before the season. I mean, kind of all my dialogue there, or monologue, really kind of failed to take that into consideration. That's a strange move and you might be on to something with his assistant coach there, you know. I mean, especially when you kind of think back and look at you know, I don't think that a school like virginia would ultimately land calipari because of the money situation, right, like he's probably got a lot bigger network of boosters at arkansas. But virginia is a big job.
Speaker 1I, that's an attractive college job, you know. So like to put them in a situation where you can't go out and recruit available coaches to one of the most attractive jobs in the sport. Yeah, it's a head-scratcher man Like, look I get and everybody. I also didn't realize in the stat about the only time they won any NCAA games was when he went to the national championship. So you know there's definitely some holes there. But you know, yeah, by and large a couple pros, a couple decent pros, I guess, was it? Malcolm Brogdon was probably the biggest one in a while and he just hasn't oh, been, he's been all right, um, but they've had some pretty good decent little pros yeah, through virginia.
Speaker 1Yeah, I was thinking I'm trying to think of some recent ones, but uh, patrick baldwin, did he go there? Um, anyway, um, yeah, is. This is kind of a shocker. You know, it'll be interesting to see. Obviously, I never heard of the assistant coach, or they got us the head coach. Now We'll see how they fare.
Speaker 1The biggest thing to me is, in a situation like this and you know the answer to this a lot better than I do, but you just mentioned Virginia plays a very distinct style under Tony Bennett, and so, like, when you recruit for that style of basketball yeah, and that's the other thing here Like you leave the players really out to dry. Look, at least, if you're going to retire, at least if you get recruited and a dude retires right after you sign your letter of intent, you can transfer right, but two weeks before the season, dude, you're stopped right, and they play a very distinct style. So you've got to figure that he's kind of sought out players that fit that style and recruited them. So obviously you're going to have to have a coach. This guy's going to kind of have to lean into that style at least a little bit. Yeah, it's a very unenviable situation to be in. In my opinion, if you're UVA right now, I think their bar just went from wherever it was to a lot lower.
Speaker 2So yeah, I think their expectations for this season would be probably get into the tournament after losing, bad That'd be, insane.
Speaker 1That'd be really good. That'd be a hell of a. You got to get an extension if you got in a tournament.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think that would be good for Sanchez and I think that might solidify. Honestly, there's really no big names or big splashes, coaches like a coaching that would or a coach available that would make a big splash right now, so we'll see. I mean, who knows where they go? I mean, would Shaka Smart smart? Would he leave marquette for virginia?
Speaker 1I mean that's somebody, yeah, yeah so that would be an interesting.
Speaker 2That's the first guy that comes to my mind, uh. But uh, yeah, virginia is a good, I mean it's a, it's a great gig now, uh, so it'll be interesting to see where they go from here.
Speaker 1Well, especially as the conference thing, you know, starts to, you know, continues, I guess, to a road, you know like I mean, is an ACC? I mean for now? Yes, the answer is yes, but you know how long? Is an ACC job in basketball the same as an SEC job in football? Right, the conferences are going the way of the dodo bird here. Then you know how long can they recruit on that and then at what point?
Speaker 1You know, I think a big part of Virginia, there's a handful of teams that are a big part of their identity is the league they play in. You know, and that's true for a lot of other schools, not just a lot of other schools and a lot of other conferences. But you look at a school, I mean, look at what happened to Maryland when Maryland left the ACC. They haven't been good at shit since. And that's a realistic, not only geographically, where you're recruiting a lot of the same guys. But it's not unheard of to, or, you know, it doesn't seem unreasonable to think that you know something like that could happen. So, anyway, I mean, look virginia, like I said, it's boring as hell, but I've never really had a problem with them. Um, you know, like I said, I feel like bennett was a good coach. I feel like you know, he's the kind of guy that's good enough, where he'll probably wind up on an NBA bench or something at some point. It'd be hard to believe a guy like that would just call it quits. But hey man, whatever.
Speaker 2Yeah, especially at 55 sleep.
Speaker 1Yeah, hell yeah. In a gig like this man out, he turned out a lot of money too.
Speaker 2Like he was on, he was owed a lot of money on that thing, I think you know, I don't know how that works an extension, apparently, that's right, that's right, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean that's nuts I said it hit me.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, some other people get hit with something too. Man, boosters are probably pissed, but uh, anyway. Um, so I don't know. Man, college football is college football. Caroline didn't play this week. Um, watched the georgia game last night. Who they play texas? Um, this is what is interesting to me about ni. We don't have to get way into this, because I kind of casually watched that game. I was pissed off. Well, I can't wait to hear why. Go ahead, you tell me why you were pissed off.
Speaker 2I feel like Archie Manning's a better quarterback than who they're playing. Yeah, quinn, you were Sure enough. I felt, yeah, whatever his name is. And when I was watching him I felt like man, you know, archie man, yeah, I get to see him. I felt like they even showed Peyton in the stands a little bit. And man, I mean, he's just, he's such a better athlete and you bring a guy in like that and clearly the other quarterback wasn't working. So Archie came in there, provided him with a little bit of spark. Then, sure enough, to hell, they go in the second half, they take him out and they end up getting their ass beat.
Speaker 2So in my mind, you know they deserved it. They deserved it. I was pulling for Texas Archie's a better quarterback. Why in the hell not just play him?
Speaker 1Well, I'm glad you brought that up and also, by the way, one of our astute listeners, because we talked about him a couple weeks back and we had no idea which one of the Mannix he was related to. Turns out he's Eli and Peyton's nephew, according to one of our listeners. We didn't know whether it was his son or grandson. We didn't know what the hell, which is par for the course. But yeah, it brings up a good point, right, like kind of defeats my point that it's a Manning. But I was. I was, um, you know, we got the Tony Bennett news and my wife was asking me, like what does he mean? Like why is the NIL such a? And I found myself like being the expert in the conversation that I'm otherwise pretty unqualified to really unpack. But as I was telling it to her, I was like, yeah, this kind of makes a lot of sense. I'm even selling myself on this strategy.
Speaker 1Look at what has happened in college football. Right, like there's a reason. Texas is number one, and I get that. They just lost, okay. But Texas has always been pretty good. They won a national championship under Mack. They've always been in the conversation.
Speaker 1But you go to NIL where you can sort of like there are kind of no rules, and I don't give a shit about anything. Like nobody's got Texas money, okay, like Alabama's good, uh, georgia's good, uh, all these other schools, tennessee is good, but those people ain't got Texas money, all right, and I think that's you know. Therein lies the thing. So why is this relevant now? Well, I'm not sure because, like I said, it's a Manning in the question here in the equation, but I bet Quinn, yours, is probably a pretty prominently connected kid somehow, either by people with money invested in him being there or whatever.
Speaker 1And that's the biggest thing here is like I, everybody at this point, like we certainly do, I know tyler does agree that these kids should get paid 100, but like I think I mean the ncaa is so inept that for years they just ignored this problem. And then they just are ignoring this problem, which is like they've just thrown their hands up and like all right, sure, pain, I don't know how you're going to make it work, just do it. You know, because the NIL thing is just like I mean, it's laughable, the kind of loopholes that they got there. You know what I mean. Like I mean dudes get paid six, seven million dollars and they never even played a down. So, or wanting it, it, you know, and, and there are people that come in, so anyway, I mean, that's my thing is to your point.
Speaker 1I have no idea arch man is any good because I haven't followed it, but there's a reason. He's not playing. You know when you're behind, um, you know, and you got a chance to win a national championship. So you know, I'm with you, man, it's just. And my point here, I guess, is that this whole nil thing is a is a trickle down effect, man, a lot of people complained about it, you know, mac mac, mac brown complained about it, nick saban complained about it. Um, a lot of people kind of like laughed at that. But I think that those guys, yes, absolutely oldstyle fucking benefits those guys. But I also think that they're on to something too and that it's going to be hard to corral this stuff.
Speaker 2Yeah, I don't like it one bit. I want to see Archie Manning play. Listen when he plays. I'm going to watch Texas. Okay. Now, if he doesn't play, I'm not going to watch Texas, Pure and simple. Okay, I don't care how much you're paying Ewers or whatever you say. However you say his name Okay, that's Archie Manning. Okay, Put him in there and play. And I tell you what Sleep I guarantee Archie Manning won cheap. They didn't get him for a discount, Exactly, so got to put him in.
Speaker 1They got his name, image and likeness. I mean, he's got deals. He's the only backup quarterback in the history of sports with a deal, except for what's that guy's name? Case Keenum is in a new progressive commercial. Have you seen that thing?
Speaker 1Guy's dressed like a regular dude, and the guy's trying to back his boat in the driveway. This is a great commercial. This guy's trying to back his boat in the driveway and his wife finally calls time out. They bring in case kingdom, who's like famous for being a backup quarterback, and she and he's dressed exactly like her husband and she's like you've done all you could do and they, like a case key to bruns out and gets to the guy's truck, backs his backs his truck or backs his boat in the driveway.
Speaker 1I was like what if everything had a backup? You know, um great commercial. But yeah, you're, you're exactly right. And uh, yeah, I mean like this is just going to continue to be talked about until something crazy happens. And you know, I don't, I don't, I think there's, there's not enough governance, for sure, and there's too many people with competing interests to make this easy. It's going to be like this for a while. Dude, I didn't even think about this, but Drake May, we were talking about it today, speaking of great college quarterbacks. Dude, I thought Drake May looked great today. I thought he looked great in his maybe not great in his last, last start, but definitely good enough to be the starter and like why, what need to begin with. Um, yeah, I I'm I'm excited about watching him, man, I just wish you know he could get somebody to protect him I mean jesus christ.
Bronny James NBA Preseason Analysis
Speaker 2We need to get him some new security. Uh, but listen, I you know sleep. I love the London games because I you know I wake up.
Speaker 1Yeah, you know, I'm just sitting there coffee, probably on my fourth cup and I just start to.
Speaker 2You know, I've had so many calls. I'm starting to shake. And then the NFL comes on. And then I was watching the Patriots.
Speaker 1I was like look at all the the world record holders are doing the Patriots. I was like I was looking at the the world record holders are doing the patriots I was like hold on, is that tom brady or drake?
Speaker 2it's drake, may I mean he looks like tom brady out there. I mean he was throwing tight windows and ropes right down the middle. I'd love to see it. And I saw bo in the weight room yesterday doing his little aerobic exercises, doing yoga in there. Yeah, pilates, he was doing sideline leg raises. But God, I'm looking at Tom Brady. He's got chill on Botox.
Speaker 1I know God looks great.
Speaker 2Can he close his eyes?
Speaker 1I was always surprised Cheekbones are tighter than a snap drive.
Speaker 2No, yeah, Drake's doing his thing. Yeah, Drake's doing great man, I'm a.
Speaker 1Patriots fan. Yeah, I'm rooting for him hard and I think again our football knowledge is there's Joe Mantegna talking to Patrick Mahomes Speaking of Drake May that's who he looked like. So, dude, tom, just got it together, man, uh. Then they put it on terry bradshaw. God, that's rough. Oh, my god, from a, from a blossom to a possum. So um the uh to the uh. It's. My great grandma used to say when, uh, god bless her man, she was 103.
Speaker 2Uh, damn, what were we just talking about, I would take, I would take 103 right now.
Speaker 1I would say oh, yeah, uh-huh, yeah, ask about that. You know you don't want to live that old dude, I want to live forever. Could you imagine me like yeah, that was. I remember that was 100 years ago and my great grandma dude, she was 103. You had to get right in her face. I'd walk in. I'd see her a couple times a year. I couldn't hear. I'd be like, hey, granny, like huh. I'd say hey, granny, like loud as shit man. She'd say who is that? I'd be like it's.
Speaker 1Brandon, she's like Randy. I'm like it's Brandon, she's like Randy. I'm like dude, I mean, our noses are almost touching. I'm like Brandon, oh, anita's son, which is my mom. She's like, yeah, and she just started laughing her ass off man.
Speaker 2It was funny Dude.
Speaker 1Yeah, she had to figure out who the hell was. But yeah, I mean, the thing about Drake is what was interesting to me, man, is how he managed the game right Like it was. You know he was on time with the screen, you know you could tell the sort of play design was pretty good. I think they were kind of trying to keep him out of trouble a little bit and I actually was like looking at some commentary online like people just saying, hey, man, you gotta let this kid air it out, and they were being a little, you know, conservative with some of the stuff. But you know he was on time, knew the plays, you know come out leading backfield or leading the guy out of the backfield a little bit and, um, I thought they moved the ball fine.
Speaker 1The patriots just suck. I mean problem number one um, I think he's only. If you ask me right now to name five players on the patriots, not named drake, may I'd struggle with. The only reason I'd have a chance is because I watched the game today. If you had asked me before the game this morning, yeah, no chance.
Speaker 2So anyway, I watched the game and I couldn't name anybody else besides.
Speaker 1Drake NBA season. We'll get to that. Mets are in game six. I'll ask you one question about Mets, Todd Do you think Mets can force game seven?
Speaker 2No Mets, suck, no chance. I'm pulling against them the whole way.
Speaker 1Okay, good, good, good, I'll see you in game seven bitch. Nba season starts on Tuesday and I can't remember what games, but it was funny because I was watching the Lakers and Warriors game the other night, of course coming at 17 and 19 minutes. I mean, the guy looks, I saw he sent you the thing. Man, he said Draymond says he's going to be an all-star. The interesting part, though, of that game, in my opinion, was, of course, the mid game started at 10 30 buddy, I was stage four rim sleep by the time that thing started. So I get up at like 4 30 am I'm watching the highlights and all they're talking about is bronnie james. I mean bronnie james played 35 minutes in that game. This is nba preseason at its peak and I mean he's about it.
Speaker 1Look, I love LeBron James. Okay, I love LeBron. I want Bronny to be good, because I want that for LeBron James. I feel like LeBron James deserves it because he's been a, he's been a steward of the game and he's, I think he's a good human being. Whether you agree with me, not, you're entitled to your own opinion, but LeBron James I mean Bronny James sometimes I say hot takes like this. I'm glad that LeBron. Nobody knows who the hell we are, so Bronny James has no chance of ever hearing this Dude. Bronny James is the closest player in the NBA to a WNBA player in the league. Man dude. I watch this guy play. I watch a lot of basketball, okay, and I really do. All right, this is in case Wayne Ellenson's out there listening to this and I mean I might get crucified again. Gosh, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2Wayne, Please, Wayne be listening.
Speaker 1I mean I was right on hit the nail right on the head with Wimby, number one player in the fantasy draft, by the way. It's just like I watch him and I'm like dude, he doesn't, he doesn't, I don't know man, you just look at him and he doesn't. He's not a fluid sort of player to me, he just looks totally lost. And this is what I'll say about it, and this will probably make my thought come together a little better. I'm a like jonathan cominga evangelist okay, and I've been watching cominga like dude.
Speaker 1Nobody I mean his mom hasn't seen as many games as I have. Thing about him was he would definitely get lost and you could tell the complexity of the game was something that he was having a hard time processing. But he had these flashes where you're like holy shit, man, this kid is athletic, he has these brilliant flashes or great flashes, but with Bronny it's just like brother, you might be Albert Einstein IQ, basketball Basketball IQ, but with Bronny it's just like brother, you might be them Albert Einstein IQ, basketball basketball IQ, but brother, you just ain't quick enough to execute on it.
Speaker 2I don't know if you've seen him play at all, but I just Well, he's a 20 year old kid playing for the NBA and I think Redick runs probably a little more sophisticated offense than most coaches. The Warriors actually kind of run a simplistic kind of motion flow, a lot of reads, but I can imagine I always tell people the biggest difference besides athleticism in the NBA game is the amount of plays that you have to know and you have to memorize a ton. You know, you get a listen, you get a playbook kind of like this, and you've got to know a ton of plays and also what's in that?
Speaker 2book that that's college basketball. It's just a blue ribbon college basketball studying different teams got it, it's, it's it's, no, it's a physics, um just learning.
Speaker 1Uh, you know quantum, yeah, yeah uh, relativity, you know stuff like that um, oh yeah, is this tree falls?
Speaker 1up is. The acorns fall out of this tree behind me sounds like I'm in felucia. Um, yeah, and, and part of theujah yeah. And part of the reason I say this man, part of the reason I say this about Bronny James, is because I know, dude, everything I say turns the exact opposite. So I mean it's hard to say man, because I really I mean maybe that was a egregious take, because I like Bronny James, I think it's unfair to say dude had a heart attack yeah, I mean failure and like who who couldn't root for?
Speaker 1I'm rooting, absolutely rooting for this guy.
Speaker 2Um, it just feels forced dan campbell over here crying uh. Oh, you know, he just got a clip man I've never seen that guy in about three hours.
Speaker 1I know um god, it's unbelievable.
Speaker 2Um listen, man brani there, I don't think you're, I don't think you're only, I don't think you're in the minority on that one. A lot of people I think bron had a say, with him going yeah he might have just a say or two.
Fantasy Basketball Draft and Rookie Surprises
Speaker 1Um, yeah, oh man, that was a good one. Um, I do love watching Angel Reese highlights on Instagram. I mean, guys, if you're listening to this, you take nothing away from this podcast. Do your favor and go find some accounts that follow Angel Reese around and, I promise, look at them with a straight face. We should do, you know, the last time we did our NBA season awards I mean it was riveting. I'm pretty sure about nine people watched. But we'll try to do that next time. Fantasy basketball draft coming tonight 9 o'clock. Sleep Dog is, I mean, we're an hour and ten minutes away. I'm not keeping we can keep two players in our draft, in our league, and I'm not keeping Jonathan Kamingo.
Speaker 2Well, he's destined to have the best years ever had. I know, I know, nope. That's why I'm doing it.
Speaker 1Nobody will know this because it won't come out until the draft is done, but I got Emmanuel quickly last year. So the way it works is you draft, you have standard draft orders 13 rounds I think and you can keep up to two players at a round, higher than you drafted in the previous year. So last year I got quickly in the 12th round. I mean this is a full well, it's a 12-team league now. So you start getting down to the end man and you're grasping at straws. So I drafted quickly last year in the 12th round. So you start getting down to the end man and you're grasping at straws. So I drafted quickly last year in the 12th round. I drafted Cam Thomas in the 11th round. So I'm keeping those guys.
Speaker 1I think Cam Thomas is. I mean, he don't give you much, but he'll give you some buckets. Dude, he's like a miniature Carmelo Anthony. All that dude does is shoot. Nothing else.
Speaker 2Fearless to shoot too who's your surprise guys in the nba, in case I need this for an hour from now. Surprise, surprise guys. Uh, the rookie class. I'm gonna go. Zach edie, I think he's gonna surprise a lot of people.
Speaker 2Uh, he's actually been playing pretty well in some of these exhibitions as well. He's got good chemistry with John Morant too and their other big guy who used to play for Oklahoma. He's been kind of injured. I think Eadie will get some minutes and Dalton Connect, I think, is going to have a good year for the Lakers. These are all rookies by the way, and Dalton Connect, I think, is going to have a good year for the Lakers yeah.
Speaker 1These are all rookies, by the way. Yeah, I'm taking. Who's the kid for?
Speaker 2Jaquez for Miami. I think he's going to have a pretty year. I like him.
Speaker 1Yep, he had a good year last year as a rookie. And he's, especially if they move off Butler, yeah, rookie. And and he's especially if they move off butler, um, yeah, they're.
Speaker 2uh, I think kawaii's out, I mean, which is no, he is he's out indefinitely and he's got degenerative knees which he's bone on bone, so sounds like he's gonna be kind of have to manage the rest of his career, which isn't good. That sucks, sucks. Yeah, it's too bad. He's such a good player, man.
Speaker 1Yeah, he's great.
Speaker 2Kawhi, in my opinion, is one of my all-time favorite players to watch. He did it on both ends.
Speaker 1When he played.
Speaker 2He was unbelievable. You played with him. I've never played with him. It's just some pickup games, but I've played against them many times yeah.
Speaker 1It's a hell of a player. Yeah, we started getting this last time and we'll end on this one. You started watching the Penguin. Are you 100% caught up?
Speaker 2I got one episode to catch up.
Speaker 1Well, the new one comes out tonight. It's pretty good. Yep, oh, I love it. Yeah, it's like not a Batman thing. I mean it is a Batman thing, but it's like you feel like you're actually watching like a gangster show or something, not some fake shit about a dude that thinks he's a penguin. I mean, it's a. It's a cool show man. The way they unpack the backstory and the kid with that's like helping him out. If you're not watching that show, that one's good it's kind of like a mobster.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, 100 percent. Um, all right, I don't know man any. Um, um, all right, I don't know man any um trying to think anything else, but I can't, uh, other than is it's uh, I think it's crab cake season, man, you go out there and get your crab case. I'm about to pump this um fire right here, dude, that's what I need to do. Is I need to hit jimmy's up? Get something on the grill. I wish you can grill. You can't grill crab cakes.
Speaker 2Be tough, I mean, I got a little flat thing you can put on there, but try to get a big honk over here.
Speaker 1Yeah, I mean you can. You can grill anything you want. You can grill a spare tire if you want to. Yeah, I mean, you got anything else. Big Hawk, stay safe, stay safe, thank you.
