On 31st July 2023, the European Commission adopted the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) – the “final rules” for use by all companies subject to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The standards cover the full range of environmental, social, and governance issues, and they provide information for investors to understand the sustainability impacts, risks, and opportunities of the companies in which they invest. The E.U. Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires ESG reporting on a level never seen before and will capture a whole host of companies that previously were not subject to mandatory nonfinancial reporting requirements, including public and private non-EU companies that meet certain EU-presence thresholds. On the 12th of June 2023, there was a substantial announcement by the European Commission that released a series of proposed changes to the European Sustainability Reporting standards which seek to reduce the reporting burden on small companies and those first-time reporters. On 5 January 2023, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) entered into force. This new directive modernizes and strengthens the rules concerning the social and environmental information that companies have to report. CSRD will require additional mandatory corporate reporting for ESG, impacting the majority of large and listed EU companies as well as some outside of the EU.
