1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV says, "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." According to Shaul, we are three-fold beings having a body, life, and spirit. The word "soul" can also be translated life and is translated as life almost half of the time. So, we have a body with life, and a spirit. Then the word spirit is essentially who we are as a person. Namely, our spirit is our thoughts, memories, and the way we act.
The spirit in 1 Thessalonians is not to be confused with the Holy Spirit. Believers in the Messiah Yeshua also believe in a gift from God, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit works in our spirit (also called the inner man) as we engage with the Holy Spirit.
Colossians 1:27-28 NKJV says,
To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect.
Ephesians 3:16 NKJV says,
Be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man.
The Holy Spirit is the Messiah at work in us, in the believer. The Holy Spirit is at work in the inner man which is our spirit.
The Holy Spirit from God does not take us over but we use the Holy Spirit by our own free will. We are not possessed by the Holy Spirit. False spiritual gifts are often produced by possession. God does not possess us. For example, we ask God for wisdom regarding something, and God may or may not give us wisdom. James 1:5 NKJV says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally." For example, God may give us a vision and the understanding in our mind. Genesis 15:1 NKJV says, "After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision."
Almost any believer in the Messiah can receive and use the gift of Speaking in Tongues, but we have to be willingly use this gift. We can stop or start Speaking in Tongues at will. Acts 2:4 NKJV says, "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." The Holy Spirit enables the supernatural gift of Speaking in Tongues. It says that they began to speak. They could have chosen not to Speak in Tongues. Speaking in Tongues is most often supernatural prayer or thanks to God.
1 Corinthians 14:4 NKJV says, "Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves."
1 Corinthians 14:14 NKJV says, "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
1 Corinthians 14:17 NKJV says, "You are giving thanks well.
