It's a"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":169.889,"endTime":173.639,"body":"team based service. And so I was"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":169.889,"endTime":173.639,"body":"a team leader. And we were doing"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":173.639,"endTime":177.809,"body":"things like gutting out schools"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":173.639,"endTime":177.809,"body":"and houses in after the Gulf"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":177.809,"endTime":181.589,"body":"Coast. And when I was there, I"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":177.809,"endTime":181.589,"body":"was given this amazing"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":181.589,"endTime":185.249,"body":"opportunity that kind of set me"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":181.589,"endTime":185.249,"body":"in this trajectory to do this"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":185.249,"endTime":188.369,"body":"entrepreneurship. And I was"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":185.249,"endTime":188.369,"body":"asked to create a rebuilding"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":188.369,"endTime":192.659,"body":"project for St. Bernard Parish"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":188.369,"endTime":192.659,"body":"right next to New Orleans to"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":192.659,"endTime":196.139,"body":"build 50 homes in four months."},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":192.659,"endTime":196.139,"body":"So five zero homes and four"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":196.139,"endTime":199.019,"body":"months and with very little"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":196.139,"endTime":199.019,"body":"resources, because I'm moving"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":199.019,"endTime":203.789,"body":"into elementary school at the"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":199.019,"endTime":203.789,"body":"time, and it's 110 degrees"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":203.789,"endTime":208.799,"body":"outside. And so because it's New"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":203.789,"endTime":208.799,"body":"Orleans heat, right. So that was"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":208.799,"endTime":213.149,"body":"pretty outrageous at a such an"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":208.799,"endTime":213.149,"body":"early age, having people rely on"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":213.149,"endTime":216.779,"body":"you to do such a important"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":213.149,"endTime":216.779,"body":"project. Another thing that"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":216.779,"endTime":220.709,"body":"stands out for me is about five"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":216.779,"endTime":220.709,"body":"years later, I'm working at this"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":220.709,"endTime":223.649,"body":"company called Booz Allen"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":220.709,"endTime":223.649,"body":"Hamilton. It's a management"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":223.649,"endTime":226.469,"body":"consulting firm, and it was"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":223.649,"endTime":226.469,"body":"getting ready to turn 100 years"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":226.469,"endTime":229.349,"body":"old. But in order for us to"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":226.469,"endTime":229.349,"body":"survive the next 100 years, we"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":229.439,"endTime":233.579,"body":"need to change things pretty"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":229.439,"endTime":233.579,"body":"drastically. So I was selected"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":233.579,"endTime":237.479,"body":"to be part of a team of five"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":233.579,"endTime":237.479,"body":"people to build a culture of"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":237.479,"endTime":241.199,"body":"innovation. And so there was not"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":237.479,"endTime":241.199,"body":"really any guardrails, they had"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":241.199,"endTime":243.239,"body":"lots of money, they were"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":241.199,"endTime":243.239,"body":"throwing towards this because"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":243.239,"endTime":246.299,"body":"this was the future of the"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":243.239,"endTime":246.299,"body":"organization. So I became the"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":246.299,"endTime":249.179,"body":"chief architect of a lot of"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":246.299,"endTime":249.179,"body":"things I wrote the innovation"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":249.179,"endTime":253.379,"body":"playbook, we wrote, create an"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":249.179,"endTime":253.379,"body":"innovation ecosystem, and we"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":253.409,"endTime":257.639,"body":"recreated the core values around"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":253.409,"endTime":257.639,"body":"empathy and change. And then I"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":257.639,"endTime":261.239,"body":"would say another outrageous"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":257.639,"endTime":261.239,"body":"moment was just after that"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":261.239,"endTime":266.459,"body":"happened, and I gained some"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":261.239,"endTime":266.459,"body":"prominence, I was asked by the"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":266.489,"endTime":269.519,"body":"Obama administration to come in"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":266.489,"endTime":269.519,"body":"and be an entrepreneur and"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":269.519,"endTime":273.509,"body":"residents for the"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":269.519,"endTime":273.509,"body":"administration. So what that"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":273.539,"endTime":276.479,"body":"involves is taking really big"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":273.539,"endTime":276.479,"body":"challenges that the government"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":276.479,"endTime":279.509,"body":"is facing your people from"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":276.479,"endTime":279.509,"body":"outside of government who come"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":279.509,"endTime":282.959,"body":"in and just try to make sense of"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":279.509,"endTime":282.959,"body":"things and try to improve"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":282.959,"endTime":287.009,"body":"things. And so what I eventually"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":282.959,"endTime":287.009,"body":"ended up creating was this thing"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":287.009,"endTime":291.119,"body":"called innovation.gov, which had"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":287.009,"endTime":291.119,"body":"a shared language for what does"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":291.119,"endTime":296.129,"body":"public sector innovation mean?"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":291.119,"endTime":296.129,"body":"We also created a community. We"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":296.129,"endTime":299.549,"body":"had about 5000 people join and"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":296.129,"endTime":299.549,"body":"just the first two years it's a"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":299.549,"endTime":302.819,"body":"community That's open and"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":299.549,"endTime":302.819,"body":"participatory and peer driven"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":302.999,"endTime":305.909,"body":"toward the better government"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":302.999,"endTime":305.909,"body":"movement. So yeah, those are"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":305.909,"endTime":308.399,"body":"some of the things that stand up"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":305.909,"endTime":308.399,"body":"for me. Empathy is a"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":332.46,"endTime":336.81,"body":"conscious choice we make. A lot of people feel like"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":339.27,"endTime":342.3,"body":"you're just born with empathy."},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":339.27,"endTime":342.3,"body":"But it's actually a learned"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":342.3,"endTime":347.16,"body":"trait, Jamil Zaki, who is a"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":342.3,"endTime":347.16,"body":"psychologist and the director of"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":347.16,"endTime":352.92,"body":"the Stanford social neuroscience"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":347.16,"endTime":352.92,"body":"lab. He's been studying, you"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":352.92,"endTime":355.83,"body":"know, neuro, the neuroscience of"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":352.92,"endTime":355.83,"body":"empathy for more than a decade"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":355.83,"endTime":358.95,"body":"in this written amazing book."},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":355.83,"endTime":358.95,"body":"And he finds these things. And"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":358.95,"endTime":361.8,"body":"so it's actually something we"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":358.95,"endTime":361.8,"body":"have proven through science."},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":361.83,"endTime":364.44,"body":"What's interesting is that"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":361.83,"endTime":364.44,"body":"empathy should be a conscious"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":364.44,"endTime":367.56,"body":"choice we make but we usually"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":364.44,"endTime":367.56,"body":"relegated that to the our"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":367.56,"endTime":372.99,"body":"subconscious. So many things in"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":367.56,"endTime":372.99,"body":"modern day society block empathy"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":372.99,"endTime":376.5,"body":"from presenting itself. And many"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":372.99,"endTime":376.5,"body":"usually have a hard time"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":376.5,"endTime":380.58,"body":"explaining this concept to"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":376.5,"endTime":380.58,"body":"others. So the book that I wrote"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":380.58,"endTime":384.09,"body":"was called empathy for change."},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":380.58,"endTime":384.09,"body":"And so I started kind of looking"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":384.09,"endTime":388.92,"body":"at these two aspects of myself"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":384.09,"endTime":388.92,"body":"in the sense that I'm an empath."},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":389.04,"endTime":393.15,"body":"I'm a highly sensitive person."},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":389.04,"endTime":393.15,"body":"And my biggest strength is"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":393.15,"endTime":396.36,"body":"empathy. But also at the same"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":393.15,"endTime":396.36,"body":"time, I'm a change maker. So I"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":396.36,"endTime":401.13,"body":"think that in order for us to go"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":396.36,"endTime":401.13,"body":"in this direction, towards"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":401.13,"endTime":406.86,"body":"empathy, we need to have"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":401.13,"endTime":406.86,"body":"innovation, and we must redefine"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":406.86,"endTime":410.73,"body":"it, because what's happening in"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":406.86,"endTime":410.73,"body":"our country and in many other"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":410.73,"endTime":413.58,"body":"places in the world, is that we"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":410.73,"endTime":413.58,"body":"are kind of at this turning"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":413.58,"endTime":416.4,"body":"point, this path that we have to"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":413.58,"endTime":416.4,"body":"choose, are we going down this"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":416.4,"endTime":421.68,"body":"path of narcissism of command"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":416.4,"endTime":421.68,"body":"and control of you do what I"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":421.68,"endTime":425.34,"body":"tell you to do? Or are we going"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":421.68,"endTime":425.34,"body":"down this path of empathy. And"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":425.37,"endTime":428.91,"body":"we can certainly unpack that a"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":425.37,"endTime":428.91,"body":"little bit later. But for us to"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":428.91,"endTime":432.9,"body":"veer towards empathy, we have to"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":428.91,"endTime":432.9,"body":"have innovation, right. But I've"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":432.93,"endTime":436.65,"body":"been a leader of innovation for"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":432.93,"endTime":436.65,"body":"more than a decade now. I really"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":436.65,"endTime":439.74,"body":"think in the day, we're trying"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":436.65,"endTime":439.74,"body":"to create positive change in the"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":439.74,"endTime":442.59,"body":"world. I think that part"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":1460.22,"endTime":1463.61,"body":"about being resilient is really"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":1460.22,"endTime":1463.61,"body":"important. I spent 12 years in"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":1463.61,"endTime":1468.47,"body":"management consulting, before I"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":1463.61,"endTime":1468.47,"body":"worked at the White House. So"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":1468.47,"endTime":1472.61,"body":"that kind of created a hardened"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":1468.47,"endTime":1472.61,"body":"shell for me. They were the ones"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":1509.75,"endTime":1513.35,"body":"who picked me up when I needed"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":1513.35,"endTime":1515.81,"body":"it, and they could understand"},{"speaker":"Amy","startTime":1513.35,"endTime":1515.81,"body":"what I was going through.
