House of the Dragon just had its best-rated episode of the season — and we couldn't not talk about it.
Episode 2, "Queen's Landing," really got us. We're breaking down exactly why it's hitting different: a small music change that hit harder than it should've, a storyline twist we're still thinking about, and the character moments that had us pausing the episode just to process. Then we get into the bigger question — are these ratings actually telling us something real, or are we all just caught up in the moment?
Hello, everybody. Welcome to Too Much TV. Today we're talking about House of the Dragons season three, episode two, Queen's Landing. And uh and Jeff, they're uh they're two for two, buddy. Like these were both great episodes.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. I just read that uh this is the highest rated episode of House of the Dragon that has been released so far.
SPEAKER_00At least at this recording. Little bias there though, like since it just came out last night. You know how they they inflated at the beginning and then it takes a while. What's the rating right now? Let's take a look.
SPEAKER_04Uh it was before when I looked, it was a 9.4. Let's take a look here. See what we're holding at now. It um you're right that it excuse me, 9.5 and is still holding strong. First episode is a 9.2.
SPEAKER_00That will probably then settle to a 9.3, I'd say, maybe 9.2, and the first episode will go down to like a 9-1, maybe a 9. But I think it's absolutely deserved. I mean, I was encapsulated right from the beginning. I've actually got a few things I want to ask you about. Do you watch the intro every time? No, I skip it because I'm too excited. You should watch it because they changed the music a little bit. Have you noticed that?
SPEAKER_04Probably sometimes. If I make it through it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, they do the the the drums at the beginning are much heavier, and then it slowly builds up to that classic Game of Thrones theme. And and now, you know, after Jace died, Jace has like arrows everywhere, and he's I mean, he's dead. He's dead as fuck, man. He's so dead. But I mean, going into the episode, the beginning, him floating in the water like that, and then the dragon fire over. Did you see that? And then the dragon flying over. It it dude, it instantly, the imagery is so good. I am immediately enthralled. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. No, it it's it's tough because it's like one of those things where it looks beautiful visually, and it's also an incredibly sad scene, like his body floating there, but it's also like it's visually very appealing, the fire through the film of the water from underneath.
SPEAKER_00Incredible shot. There's a lot of good imagery in this episode. I mean, we'll get to like some of my favorite bits, like right at the end. Incredible imagery. But no, that beginning is absolutely fantastic. I thought it was his body that floated there. Did you see that at the beginning? It kind of there was like hair and underwater, and then it went into the body.
SPEAKER_04I was confused by that, dude. I'm glad you said it because I was a little confused watching that. I wasn't sure exactly like what that was. If that was just I think it was just a transitional tactic. Okay. I also, this is how I'm glad that we do two watches before we record this because I missed his body on the dragon. Just missed it. Just didn't see that he was like being carried back by Bela on the dragon. Oh, was he? I did I miss that twice? Dude, yeah, no, but okay, I forgive you and because I did the same thing on the I only caught him on the second rewatch. His she's when she's riding back, like there's the shot directly after the scene you're talking about. Yes, when Bela is like crying and riding back, his body is on the dragon. Like she has to ride back with him and his dead body basically on her lap.
SPEAKER_00Oh fuck. I mean, how else are you gonna bring it back, dude? Huh? How else are you gonna bring it back?
SPEAKER_04No, yeah, you're right, but it's just crazy thinking about like a modern version of that. Like uh driving back with I mean, just uh, dude.
SPEAKER_00Awful. Dude, if you if you drive back with a corpse, do you put the seatbelt on the corpse? I think you have to, right?
SPEAKER_04I mean, if you get an accident, like another accident with the corpse. You don't want him flying around everywhere. Oh man, yeah. Just in case. Just in case. Hope our audience enjoys that part. Oh god, I'm terrified. Anyway, yeah, we deal with the whole aftermath of like the the Jace death and I like how he's carried back by the Dragonkeepers.
SPEAKER_00Did you notice that? And I like how the Dragonkeepers are clearly wearing costumes that are very old. Do you know what I mean? Like they're very old school. They feel ancient. And also like them it carrying him like that, it felt like an ancient sort of Targaryen tradition. I mean, dude, I don't know if it's true or anything, but it it it has that resonance of an older tradition within the Game of Thrones universe.
SPEAKER_04There's a lot of like honor in the scene, right? It feels like they're very careful with his body. And of course they are because he's royalty, but it's also like you're saying, like, it's like old. Yeah, exactly. He's a dead dragon rider, so they're paying the respect to who he was. And obviously, just as that whole scene plays out, it's really hard to watch. I don't know how you felt watching it. I it was one of those the first time around where watching Rhaenera and her initial reaction was like really close to making me like look away from the screen because it's just it's just awful.
SPEAKER_00The acting was incredible. Emma Darcy. I so I told you how I kind of preferred Millie Alfcock a bit as Rhaenera. Sure. But I think the acting in this season for Rhaenyra and Emma Darcy alone, she's definitely won me over. I think she's absolutely the next level. Next level. Yeah. Right. And her her over the corpse of Jace, and she's not touching him. She's almost like willing him to come back. Yeah. And I actually have a question for you about Sir Sir Laurent, the the the Queen's guard who who like kept her in her bedchamber. Like when Jace in episode one, when he was like, uh, you need to protect her from herself, I looked at Kiki and I was like, that's not how that works at all. Like I mean, it I it's convincing. Kiki, what do you what do you mean? What? Like dude, she is the queen. You you have to protect her regardless of her decision. You go along with her choices and protect her but you can't like prevent her from making a choice. Yeah. I also wonder if if it's like I think it's really interesting when we look at gender in House of the Dragon, because I think if Rhenira was Damon in that situation, the queen.
SPEAKER_04That dude is not locking Damon in the room.
SPEAKER_00Not even a little bit. I wonder if it's a very good thing. That that sort of like is sexist the right word for it? Maybe prejudice?
SPEAKER_04Or or Yeah, it's somewhere in that vein. Yeah. It's it's just he I think, at least in the in the place of the show, he's feeling that maybe like male desire to. Yeah. I don't know. That was well, I mean, at the at the point of the state. When you were so launched, what would you have done? I think he knows in that moment that he's giving up his life, kind of no matter what. Or at least he's very when Jace is telling him to lock her up. By locking her in the room, he's he's risking his life because he knows that whatever's gonna go happen to Jace, he doesn't know if Jace is gonna make it or not. He hopes he makes it, but he knows that in that moment, if Jace gets hurt or dies, yeah, or maybe even not, like maybe if Jace is fine, he's still gonna lose the status.
SPEAKER_00I mean, going back to the gendered thing, do you almost think it's like the man's he thinks it's the man's job to go out and fight?
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_00Like James, maybe to some degree.
SPEAKER_04At the time, at the time, I think that and he also might have agreed with some of Jace's logic. Like it's not up to him. I agree, but that might have been driving the decision still. Even though he's like, you gotta remember, even though these people are like way more duty oriented than we are today, like I think they have less sense of free will, they still at the end of the day are gonna be human. So he may have been thinking, you know, from a from a practical standpoint, we can't lose her. We cannot lose her, which is the same thing Jace is saying.
SPEAKER_00But it's it but there's not even a chance that we might lose her. Like there, it's not like uh guaranteed that she's gonna die. You know what I mean? Like but this is her choice. I I do it it's one of those like philosophical questions that we're never just gonna get to the bottom of. Yeah, you know, yeah. I agree. But it's an impossible decision. It's an impossible. I mean, I think I would have let her go. If it were me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Or I would have tried to at least go with her, maybe. Which you can't really at the end of his position, it's just like, all right. Good luck at the end of the day.
SPEAKER_00At the end of the day, she's the queen, she makes the choice. I can only protect her as much as I can. Whatever. Yeah. Yeah, dude. I honestly at the end of the day, I think he was a fucking idiot. And then he comes back and he's like, Oh, my life is for that. Oh. And she's like, What's that gonna do? Shut up. Yeah, that was you asshole. Why are you making this about you? But I also I guess I feel the guilt, maybe, or keys feels that guilt.
SPEAKER_04I think that's what it was, but it did feel like when they were walking back into the room, like he's walking back with Jace because he's with the like party that's bringing him back. I was like, did we win?
SPEAKER_02Did we win?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know. Did we win? And then it's like okay. What of one of the battle? Dude, it is crying. You're done, buddy, regardless. Like, yeah. Yeah. I agree. The it was kind of it just felt like it was misplaced when he's making that, like getting down on his knees and and trying to have her. But it was incredible foreshadowing. But it was kind of incredible foreshadowing that he's basically like handing the sword to her to do for the end of the episode. Yeah, it's a little bit of to me. That didn't that feel like foreshadowing to you? It's like, okay, so we've got a little bit of a catch, Jeff. I didn't I didn't pick up on that. That's a very good catch. I her reaction to it is kind of funny too in the beginning, because it's like, what good would that do? She's does she doesn't want to do it then, she doesn't want to do it at the end. It's like, oh man.
SPEAKER_00I don't Yeah. We'll get to the end because I I have so much to say about the end, because the ending was it was again, dude. I like I looked at Kiki halfway through this episode, and I was like, this is such good fantasy. Like fantasy, I would argue fantasy is probably my favorite genre. But but it's huge caveat there, it's nine times out of ten done terribly. Like there are just awful fan, it's just cheesy and corny and not good. But then that that one out of ten, one out of ten, yeah. Game of Thrones, bro, was one of the greatest shows of all time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And I think HBO, dude. HBO just does this fantasy, this this fantasy. You watch it and you're like, no one else is doing this, no one else is doing this. Like this type of fantasy, this good, they are just in their own like tier.
SPEAKER_00The only comparative thing is Lord of the Rings. I cannot think of any sort of other fantasy that is this high quality. Yeah. Um, yeah. But uh I I we we we'll get to the end because I have a lot to say about that, but we should continue through the episode. Um Lar, can we talk about Laris? Larry's strong and Aegon in in the cart. Uh clearly we see Larry's intentions now was that he told them who he was to kind of buy them some time. Did you not think that them escaping was a little bit like a deuce ex machina? Like, oh fucking, there's it fell out of the sky. Yeah, right?
SPEAKER_04Just kind of like, oh, of course.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_04That was one of those things where it feels like, okay, we have to come up with some random scenario that allows them to escape because otherwise, what are they gonna do? Uh yeah, it did feel a bit that way, but I think it just had to happen to move the plot along to some degree.
SPEAKER_00I will say, I will say Laris is is hilarious. Laris is so funny. He I think he's legitimately a sociopath because he Yeah. Well, he's just like he absolutely no emotion, all logic.
SPEAKER_04When when Aegon is like crashing out and stabbing that kid with the arrow, do you notice Laris has literally zero reaction? He just starts talking to him again like they just like they stepped out of the cart with nothing. Yeah. After Aegon is like savagely on the ground, like impaling the kid. Killing him with like a the arrowhead, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Broken arrowhead that he has to repeatedly stab the kid. And Laris, if you look at Laris, it's just like stone faced. He's just and he just starts talking to him again, like a casual conversation. He's almost just like bored.
SPEAKER_00In a weird way, he's just kind of like, oh my god, can you get this over with? We have to go.
SPEAKER_04He may be so like cerebral and and logic driven that it's just like this is another step, like on a, you know, on a on a on a chessboard or like just moving pieces on a puzzle, you know. It's just like, okay, on to the next one. Like, how does this how does this play out for us?
SPEAKER_00I'm very interested to see where that storyline goes, but as of right now, I find that storyline to be probably on the weaker side of all of them that are happening right now, don't you think? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I I fully agree. I think some of it is not even the like that storyline's fault necessarily. It's just that it's up against some absolute all-star plots right now that are playing out like in other parts of the world, like their universe. So, how are we gonna compete with some of the other things we're seeing in these episodes? The Laris part is just like, all right, keep moving along. There, it's gonna, it's gotta come to a nice like climax at some point here.
SPEAKER_00Well, because there's a few people who are just kind of sitting around. Like Cole is sitting around doing a whole lot of nothing.
SPEAKER_04Cole, I think, had one scene, right? Where where the Vagar Vagar flies over and aims, like just one moment in this episode. Yeah, Cole is not, you're right. But there are pieces moving around the board, so some are kind of more stagnant than others. Um, let's move on to that. Go ahead. I was just gonna say last note about Laris while you were talking about his intentions. Um I won't skip too far ahead, but just touching on where the episode ends here, do you remember that uh the man in the dungeon dungeon says a gift from Lord Laris? So you talking about his intentions, he's definitely plotting far in advance for certain events to grow. Oh, for sure. But to me, it shows an incredible amount of foresight, you know, planning things like that, like little moves that would gain him favor with people like Damon. So, like regardless of who wins. Exactly.
SPEAKER_05If it plays out, he's he's got things in place to me that have multiple options for how it could play out.
SPEAKER_04He is. That's yeah, it's perfect. What's her favorite straight line to Sansa when he's like, consider all things, all possibilities all at once. Everyone's your friend, everyone's your enemy. He goes through that whole thing with her. He it reminds me so much of the way that it seems like Laris is approaching this. But yeah, let's what's your next?
SPEAKER_00I think I may rewatch Game of Thrones, dude. I think I I think it's time. It's been so long. I think I I didn't I watched the last episode and I was so pissed about how bad it ended. I have not watched anything since. So it's been like seven years since I watched Game of Thrones, so I might have to I might have to do that again. Yeah. Okay, well let's move on to Aymant, Vagar, and like Heron Hall.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00I mean, going back to Cole, right? When he looks up and looks at Vagar. Isn't it astounding when you see the width of the dragon's wings and also how there's like holes in them? Like the little things. Did you see that?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, dude, the scenes where Vagar is flying and the sound that that dragon makes while it's in the air, they have mastered the way that they show that in an episode, like of television. The the the the rush of the wings, like the wing beats, are so different than all of the other dragons, just to show you the scale and like the size of Vagar.
SPEAKER_00It's it's not like a sonic boom, obviously, but it's like a a change in pressure.
SPEAKER_04It's just so it's so heavy and it has so much force, force and weight, yeah, of the wing beats.
SPEAKER_00You remember season one, like the very last episode when Vagar is chasing that smaller dragon and whose name is escaping me, and obviously comes out of the cloud, like that final scene, and kills the the um Luke, I think. Right? Luke Luke, yep. Yeah, kills Luke. There they were at Storm's End, and remember he was like, it was raining and stormy, and it was like you could just see Vagar a little bit in the background.
SPEAKER_04One of the best shots of that whole season. One of just just if you had to pick like single shots, you know, like a three-second clip, that scene where it's like storming, and you can see him kind of through the th the lightning and the rain, the pouring rain and just massive silhouette is in the distance. It's one of the most intimidating shots of the whole season, but that's what they do with Vagar so well. Like everything feels so intimidating when he's flying, you're hearing the noises you're talking about. Like, yeah, that sounds so intimidating. Imagine being one of those soldiers on the ground. You would hear that kind of thing before you even maybe see it.
SPEAKER_00Like, yeah, we Kiki and I laughed about this a little bit. We we they obviously Vagar shows up at Heron Hall and then starts burning everybody. And some guy's like, Dragon! I'm like, bro, the dragon's been here for like five minutes.
SPEAKER_04Everybody in that entire place knows that there's a dragon buddy. You can't not hear it.
SPEAKER_00Why are you shouting about it? Also, he's yelling it right as he's getting cooked alive. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04He's dragon as it's gonna blast him a second and a half later. But yeah.
SPEAKER_00Do you uh you know the history behind Heron Hall? Like the the why it looks like that and all like decrepit. I might have told you about this.
SPEAKER_04I feel like you might have a while back, but yeah, tell look, go ahead.
SPEAKER_00I want to hear it again. So Lord, and I'm gonna be paraphrasing a lot of this because I don't quite remember all of it, but like Heron Hall is named after Lord Heron, I think. I might be wrong there. But he decides that he wants to build the biggest castle in Westeros. So he builds this impenetrable massive castle. And the second the castle is done, Aegon the Conqueror shows up in Westeros and starts conquering everybody. So Lord Heron, I think it's Haron the Black, I think is his name. Haron the Black sits in his castle and looks at Aegon is like, yeah, fuck you, you're not gonna get in here. And Aegon and his two sisters and his wives, again, going back to our incest, the good stuff, and they the three dragons, and Vagar's one of them, because Vagar's original writer was one of Aegon's sister wives. They uh completely just torch Heron Hall and like that. I think they cook him alive inside. Nice. Like he's in the he's in the he's in like the depths, like deep down. Yeah, and it just gets the flames don't even get there. Yeah, they get they cook him alive and bake him. Yeah, bake him. So it was kind of cool to see Vagar go there again because I was like, oh, this is it looks like this.
SPEAKER_04Familiar territory, and probably some of the damage is still done by Vagon.
SPEAKER_00Actually, I'm not sure if it was just Aegon who burnt him in there and the sisters were there, but whatever. I mean, you could still then imagine what that would have looked like. I mean, it's so cool. Let's let's move on to Aemon for a second because Aymond he meets up with that strong, Lord Strong, the uh I think he's the uncle of Laris, I think. Grand Grand Uncle. Whatever, he owns Heron Hall. Yep. I actually like him a lot. Sweet old dude. Like a jolly old man who also kind of knew the game he was playing and was pretty good, not at manipulating people, but sort of dude.
SPEAKER_04Uh I mean Go ahead. I I like the the phrase manipulation because he he for being a very passive man. For being, yeah, for being a very passive man, he did manipulate some very strong characters, well, at least namely Damon, right, into being peaceful in his approach, which he then clearly tried to do again with Eamon, didn't play out exactly the same because I think and I think a lot of what we were supposed to see in that scene with Eamon was the comparison between himself and and Damon, right? In the sort of like the scene where the doors open, the doors open, it's a very s similar shot, right, of Eamon and Damon coming in with the sword. Drawn like and a similar reaction from them, it just obviously played out much differently.
SPEAKER_00Amond, I I was watching that scene, and I have to admit I'm kind of like bored of Amond. Like he's a good character, I guess. But his actions are too predictable. Yeah. He's just like a shitty villain. Like not that he not that he's like poorly written. Yeah. But just like his choices are boring. Like they're not like Damon Damon is neither, you know, protagonist or antagonist. He's definitely his own thing. I mean, and I think a lot of people in the Game of Thrones universe sort of fit, you know, somewhere in the middle. I mean, obviously a character like Joffrey is such a good antagonist that he's I think he's like, people say he's the greatest villain ever. And I can totally see that. Amund is just like a cliche villain, and it's not his writing. It's just like him killing him. It was so predictable. And I was like, that's such a boring choice for him to make, is just to kill him.
SPEAKER_04Do you know what I'm trying to say? Absolutely do, dude. I think he's it um eye. He doesn't surprise you enough. He makes a lot of the choices that you expect from a villain to make, which after a little while, it does get he kisses his mom. Yeah, that was that was a little bit of a curveball. But but for the most part, I think, and honestly, even just like the method, like the way he goes about it, it's almost robotic. He's just like walking, he's like walking at them like a cyborg, and it's just like, okay, so uh he just does exactly what you would expect.
SPEAKER_00He doesn't It's like if you're gonna do this, do it a little better. Like less predictable.
SPEAKER_04He just comes in there and kills everybody, and then the only part that wasn't, I guess, pr completely predictable, which is kind of funny, is that to me he was so cocky about the way that he was just like brutally, like violently killing these people that he let his guard down. He the the one person that was able to touch him in combat was a m closer to a civilian-like character, right? Who's not a soldier, and it's because Damon is just I mean, excuse me, Eamon is just walking around, you know, like robotically killing these people, just not even seeing them as a threat.
SPEAKER_00And then he's yeah, go ahead. His his armor, again, dude. I'm gonna I'm gonna keep talking about the armor in the show. The armor's so good. It's my favorite part, I think. Do you like his helmet with the eye? Like the thing. I will say the helmet. Okay, I will say of all of the things in like the chest pieces, the breastplates, all of that is really good. Mm-hmm. Fantastic. Yeah. I will say sometimes the helmets.
SPEAKER_04Did Damon get a lamer helmet? Like, did Damon's helmet used to be cooler to me? Did it not have wings on it? And then he wore this like.
SPEAKER_00It did, but I think the winged helmet was for like tournaments. Like it was there for flair. Uh I think the one he's wearing now is is a battle helmet. Because if it's not anywhere's helmet, okay.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. But it doesn't work in battle, man. I guess. I guess. I don't know, man. I I like I like the wings.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think it's kind of weird with the I think it was just for the tournaments, like as like a bit of a flair to it. I mean, you know, we talked about a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Same thing. Like um Baratheon had the antlers on it. Yeah. Awful. That would be terrible in battle. It just wouldn't work. It would look sick, sure. Fuck you. But it would like the sword would get stuck and it would just not Yeah, it's not practical at all.
SPEAKER_04I just I was used to seeing him look cool and then he gets there with that like bull helmet thing that's like shoving down his forehead and it I don't know.
SPEAKER_00If I have any criticisms, I think the helmets are a little uh I think they're a little phallic. Especially, uh I mean, kind of jumping ahead, but the high tower helmets at King's Landing when when Alicent is talking to the commander, I'm like, bro, that's like a dick helmet. You know what I mean? Like it's just a little like kind of like teletubby, not teletubby, I don't know, smurfs. It just looks like you know what I mean? Anyway. It's a telew dick helmet. We're uh we're degenerating here. Okay, last thing with Amund. So he gets stabbed. Do you think he falls over because like it actually hurts and he's passing out from blood loss, or do you think he was like poisoned?
SPEAKER_04Oh, I don't know. That's a great call because he starts shaking. He starts shaking pretty quickly. There's a minor shake in his in his right arm, and the blood that he's losing looks pretty dark, which I think is like or org coming from like organs. Uh it so I didn't really. Well, yeah, I don't know. That you can check me on that, but I I think the dark blood sometimes comes from like vital organs.
SPEAKER_00Um we should know this, Jeff. We've washed the pit.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, true, true, true. Um good callback. I I think if you look when he puts his hand back, there's a decent like because it starts dripping pretty violently, like as he's stumbling towards the witch, who I never remember before. Yeah. It could be, but I mean it's the witch is Alice Rivers. I'm glad you remember it because I never remember her name. But she's she's I love that she just stands there as he's like stumbling towards her and he just dragging himself.
SPEAKER_00I could very easily be wrong about the name.
SPEAKER_04That's fine. It's fine. The witch. Um she's standing there as he's collapsing and dragging himself towards her. Do you think she's gonna help him?
SPEAKER_00Okay, so I I may have I may have no, hold on, Jeff. I may have cheated on you a little bit and read parts of the book.
SPEAKER_03Of course you did, dude. So I'm not gonna say the the book. Your mistress.
SPEAKER_00Well, I wanted to actually check. I I was reading the gullet, the battle of the gullet. Um and I just kind of wanted to see the comparison and like the whole plot line with nettles and everything. And I I read some snippets and I was like, oh, I see why they didn't add nettles now. Okay, because she becomes like a love interest of Damon. Oh, it's just like and now that they make the nettles character absent and it's his daughter with Sheep Stealer, it's like, unless they're gonna do another incest thing. Oh, yeah, but honestly, this is how good Game of Thrones is. I don't mind the incest stuff, but there's a limit.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's gonna it's gonna get kind of exhausting if they go too far with it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's like another one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because we're at like three. No, like four in just house. Anyway, I don't even want to get into it. Um, but let's move on real quick to your boy Alan. Yeah, I was hoping we would talk about Alan. Only had a quick only had a quick little scene here, but he's legitimized now. He's now Alan Valerian.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Can I talk for like 10 seconds about my boy Alan? Because I love Alan. You know that I love Alan. And I think it's incredibly funny that Alan is Corliss's bastard son and was raised apart from him, and yet he is so much like Corliss. He's in the fact that the name is the thing that he's always cared about. Like it's not the gold or the riches or the power that way.
SPEAKER_05He just wanted to be his son.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05And that's that's what he cared about. And at the end of the day, that's what Corliss can give him. That's so cool to me.
SPEAKER_00It's pretty convenient that Corliss gives it to him now after his wife is dead. Like, right? He's like, You're not wrong. Hey, and now my wife is dead. Hey, you're now my son. Because now she now she can't get mad. Yeah, he's in the clear. But I mean, I I to that I mean that's being kind of harsh because he did help a lot, saved his life. Also, just going back to Corless, real quick. No way in hell did he survive falling into that water and all of that armor. No way in hell. No, this to me is. Every other soldier is drowning this 75-year-old man in like 50 pounds of steel plate armor. I will wash ashore. I mean, I guess they call him the sea snake, but like the literal name.
SPEAKER_04I think this is kind of role reversal for the two of us because normally I would be the one like hating on you know unrealistic things like that. But I think I'm giving them the grace of this is a fantasy show, and there are like supernatural elements to it. And so it's a little bit on point that the sea snake doesn't ever die. He's been in multiple wrecks and been in water battles and stuff. He's fallen in, but he never dies in the ocean. It's like, okay, yeah, he's the sea snake. He doesn't die in the water, dude. There are tragics in the show, baby armor floats. That's fine. Okay. For this one guy. For this guy, yeah. We will learn that he's got like, you know, sponges or something. So it's like flotation. I don't know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm trying to sleep. But like, it's fine.
SPEAKER_04You know, it's it works out, it works out well for the show. He shouldn't have died in that lame way. Like, yeah, we said that before. He's not going to die getting thrown overboard. That's way too insignificant of a death for that big of a character. So fine. No. For the plot, he somehow magically washes ashore, however many miles away they were from the battle.
SPEAKER_00I will allow it. We're allowing it this time. All right. Well, because I mean that's all this is a very short scene with Corless and Alan legitimized, very, very cool. Let's kind of get to the end of the episode here a little bit and let's move on to King's Landing, because I think a huge majority of the episode and the quality of the episode is at this ending. And Alicent also almost getting raped.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, rough scene, man. Really rough scene. Another one that made me want to like turn away from the screen. It was like, What geez Louise, we're we're how far are we going with this scene?
SPEAKER_00Like well, you know, they they didn't they don't have. So in all of Game of Thrones, they allude to rape quite a lot. But they've all and and they never have showed it. But there is one. Remember Sansa and um what's the villain? Ramsey. Do you remember that? That was a really that's actually one of the lowest rated episodes pre-season seven in Game of Thrones. I actually think it's the lowest rated one. And I think it's because of that scene. Because it's pushing it, you know what's so funny, man. Like there's so much violence, like war violence and and murders and stuff. But it is incre it's but the sexual violence, it's amazing how it all like that no people have zero patience for any of that. And I uh for obvious reasons. We can watch we can watch people get burned alive and Ned get his head cut off and all this stuff. But when it comes to that violence, and it's me too. I really, really cannot stand it. It's really uncomfortable. It's really extremely uncomfortable to watch.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And I mean, thank I mean Lord Jasper, he gets I love how he tries to get away with it. Where he's yeah, she's a betrayer. Like do you know where she was? This is her fault.
SPEAKER_04He gets up from that awful position that they're in and like dusts himself off and tries to like you know straighten up his tie effectively. It's like this dude. Oh, so all right, buddy. Yeah, huh? Yeah. Oh, yes, I'm glad you walked in. Ask her where she was. It's like, dude, do you know what he just saw you doing right now? Like, which is basically what he says, the Maester is like, I know what I saw with my own freaking eyes, dude. I love that Maester. Yeah, he's amazing. Yeah, he's a good character. Um, but yeah, then where do you want to go from this? You want to get to their arrival or you want to stick with Allison?
SPEAKER_00I want to quickly talk about uh Helena, actually, a little bit. Oh, yeah. Because I have a couple things. She has the best line in the whole episode. I think I want to keep chickens.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04That is such a good line. And you get the little smile from Alison because it's like she's so pure.
SPEAKER_00She's so innocent and pure even though she's even though she's married to her brother. And uh one of her kids got her head his head cut off. You know, like like she still has do you know who she really reminds me of, dude? And I wrote this down uh Luna Lovegood. I knew you were gonna say Luna Lovegood. Yeah, I knew you were gonna say it.
SPEAKER_04Yes, dude, because yes, they're come on. I mean, but I mean, come on, like they are very, very similar characters, they have incredible moments, but yeah, also kind of you know, a little bit. A little spacey. Spacey, yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's a little bit not dumb.
SPEAKER_04But also not dumb, exactly. I'm glad you said that because she's not dumb. She's actually very insightful and she seems much more aware in certain moments than you than she lets on a lot of the time, but then is also just very pure and innocent and sweet.
SPEAKER_05And she's I would like disarmed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I I also love what she says. She says, um her sons were very nice or something. I think she's like, Yeah, same scene, same scene.
SPEAKER_04That's that's what she says when they're talking about letting Rhenira come. And she's like, her sons were always very nice. And it's like, okay. She doesn't want to do that. They're both dead, by the way. She doesn't want any of this. No, she doesn't. She doesn't. You feel that's one of the few characters that you can genuinely feel sorry for throughout the show. She's the best person. Yeah. There's like very there's a select few who you legitimately feel sorry for, or like Penny throughout the show. She's one of them, I would say. She's 100% one.
SPEAKER_00Um, let's go into that final scene then. Like when they get here. When they get there. It's not quite a bloodless coup, no, but it's close. Damon has to delete a few people, but like what, maybe a dozen? Yeah, well, yeah, he's bad for the capital.
SPEAKER_04No, not at all. And yeah, I mean, and he made pretty quick work of it too.
SPEAKER_00It was so what would you do? I'm asking this, like, I I always think about this. You know, the king is gone, Aegon is gone somewhere, the prince regent left, and now it's just the queen two queens there. And if you're a guard, like what do you do?
SPEAKER_04Like, what would you do? No, it's an another impossible decision because I can't like logically place myself in that position and and live the life of a guard like that. I see it, you know, in my in my shoes, in Jeff's shoes, I'm like, uh, you know, okay, this is my job. Uh, and yes, I've been like basically sworn to protect what the the the royalty, but what what do you do when you royalty? Yeah, exactly. What what do you do when you have to pick a royalty who you've both like I don't know, man. And clearly, um uh his name's gonna escape me, but Damon's friend in the in the guard, um, the one who ends up speaking to him at the end. The gold clip. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so some of these guys really are just kind of doing it like a job, like they're serving whoever's in power in the city, but then when like somebody else comes in and they have old history with them, it's like, oh no, I'm gonna back that guy.
SPEAKER_00Their loyalty is a little flexible.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yep. I was um I was talking to Kiki about this, where I said, if you're if you retake the red keep as Reneera, the the smart thing to do would be to kill everybody. Do you know what I mean? It's all the servants, all the servants, just clean house clean house. Clean house. And just because because then we took on to a very interesting discussion about government, like how our American government is designed so this shit doesn't happen. We don't even realize it now because we kind of take it for granted. But with old school royalty and that sort of history, if you had the opportunity to take, you know, the throne, the only way to really keep it and to prevent any rebellion is to absolutely murder everybody else. Yeah. Make sure that your power was consolidated. It's a very uncomfortable thing to think about. But unfortunately, you have to do it, I think.
SPEAKER_05You do, you're am I crazy?
SPEAKER_04No, not even in the slightest, dude, because think about it, they like in their time, they're taking out the people who are at the high level, right? They're not going to kill, like, they can't kill the entire city, but they kill the people who were in power. And if you think about in today's society, when things like a business gets taken over or bought, a lot of the time they clean out upper management. Yeah, and that's right. It's so it's the same exact scenario plays out. It's just not quite as severe consequences, right? You are getting rid of the people that may have had loyalty to the former, whatever you want to call it, you know, ruling class in their in their scenario. And so you start with a fresh slate. That's the that's at least the theory behind it, right? Yeah. You're God, you're so right. You're so right. But it's weird to think that like we do this in business now, and it's seen as maybe something that's uncomfortable, but it's it's the way that things are. Where in this time, in House of the Dragon time, the consequence is not, oh, you're fired and you just have to go away and find something new. You're just done.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Because then you're not a threat. Exactly. Yep. You're eliminating the threats to the to the to the family or whatever it is that you're trying to protect. Business.
SPEAKER_00Well, if well, let's move on to threats then, because we're let's talk about the gift that Laris left Jamon. Mr. Otto. Dude, I don't do you remember when he went to prison? Like, do you remember how he got there?
SPEAKER_04All right, good. I'm glad you brought this up and are asking these questions too, because I had them. I had them, and I believe that we had a shot of Otto at some point behind bars, right? Like, does Laris find him when he's being transported behind bars? There's I, dude, I need to rewatch it, and I'm sure that if people are listening to this, they probably know exactly the scene. But I think we saw a very brief shot of Otto behind bars or in some kind of like captive situation, and Laris was maybe the one that found him, or at least maybe people who were connected to Laris found him. Sure, found him. What I was gonna ask you was, I guess, how many people knew he was down there? Like with how much of it that was a secret?
SPEAKER_05Who knew he was down there other than Laris, of course.
SPEAKER_00But rat guy, rat catcher, I guess.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but so no, no, we're thinking not a lot of people up in like Allison's circle, right? Like people like that. I doubt it. Because if Allison knew her dad was down there, she would have gotten him out. Right, right. So yeah, that the way that that whole thing played out was insane. But um, as that's playing out, sorry, so uh before we get to the very final stages, because I I am excited to go over this last part with you. I gotta give one of my favorite moments of the whole thing was kind of a small moment as they're entering when Damon, after Damon has killed the initial group and they're they're gonna fight that set of maybe there's 10 or so guards that are still gonna oppose them with the king's guard. Yeah, so he's yeah, yeah, yeah. So he's he's first like he's obviously incredibly confident in his own combat skills and he's ready to fight them. He would lose. We know he would lose. Uh I at least, yeah. I think 10 guys that well trained. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Maybe it's still, you know, it it's it's 50-50, maybe leaning a little. Yeah, he would get a lot of them. What my favorite part is, is when they're hearing the footsteps and they think there's like, you know, there's clearly like 40 or 50 guys that are coming behind them. Uh Damon's little line of stay close to me, Rhaenira, this dude is still thinking that he's gonna 2v50 these people.
SPEAKER_05Oh, bro. I I know it's insane, but I love the confidence and just the brazen, like I'm just we're gonna go out swinging.
SPEAKER_04He's in his head, I genuinely believe the character of Damon thinks he's gonna he's gonna delete all those guys.
SPEAKER_00Like he's gonna because do you do you remember season one where he kills the crab feeder guy? Yeah. Yeah. He he just done that kind of thing.
SPEAKER_04I mean, maybe not as well trained as these guys. These are a higher level of soldier than what he's faced there. But I agree with you. That's a great callback because it's like, hey, this guy walks into number four full of full of people that outnumbered by you know tens. I mean, he's going 1v 20, 30, 40 and winning. And so it's like, yeah, that's why he's like, Reneira, I've got this. Like, you know, stick close to me. He's he's he's checking both sides. He's like, All right, let's go. I love that dude. Damon, I know I I glaze Damon, but I'm telling you, that little moment was like, that was awesome. That was like, this dude is just gonna go.
SPEAKER_00For the man. I love Damon. He again, we talked about this last week. It's the he's the best Targaryen.
SPEAKER_04Yep. Yep. But go ahead. You why don't you lead us into the last portion of this? Because I'm excited to talk about it.
SPEAKER_00Well, so Damon when he finds Otto, when he's laughing his head off. Yep. It was so good. He's the laughter, it was more a cackle. Like the echo of the laughter where it's just like it's hanging in the air a little bit. I don't know if I would have known. I guess so I guessed who it was. I I was like, oh, it has to be Otto because I I have been re-watching season one just a little bit, and I know their sort of animosity towards each other. So I was like, oh, of course. What a great gift. I hate this guy. So okay, so so he brings them into the throne room, and there's I think there's a lot of layers to this throne room scene that I think I want to sort of like dive into because I think Damon is egging on Rhaenyra to do what he thinks is the right way to rule, but I think it's the right way for him if he were king.
SPEAKER_02Not Rhaenera.
SPEAKER_00I think Rhaenera needs to act differently as queen. Maybe not pardon Otto, but something different than what she did.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that I think, I think everything that you can watch play out on her face and all of those emotions and the hesitation and the trembling, it's very clearly not a space that she's comfortable in. And I think throughout the entire scene, she's questioning, even when he's the problem is he's whispering it right in her ear, right? He's putting the maximum amount of pressure on her, saying they're watching, you will become queen in this moment. All of this like grand, you know, the the the way he's phrasing everything is perfect to push her, just push, push, push. And she in the past has been the one, you know, in other tactical decisions to to take a breathe and and and think through it a little bit more, but she can't.
SPEAKER_00I don't think it's what she wanted to do. It's a part of her grief. She's still grieving for Jace. I mean, what maybe it's been a week, right? If that, yeah, a couple days. Yeah, it's incredibly fresh. Otto is her childhood friend's dad. And also the advisor to her father for a decade, maybe 15 years, maybe 20 years. I don't quite know exactly how long. And so in a weird way, she probably looked up to him growing up. And now Damon is like, you need to kill this guy.
SPEAKER_04And yeah, well, and think she just she just had the conversation with Allison where they, I mean, at least for Rhenira, it felt like they they found common ground. They found a compromise. However difficult it was, they they reached a sort of connection. And it felt like to Rhaenera, in the way that she was acting in sort of episode one, it was like, no, Allison has come around. Allison is like, is, is, is working this out with us. Like, yeah. And and I'm gonna kill her dog. She's like, yeah, now I gotta chop her dad's head off. It's like, oh my god, what do you do with that, dude?
SPEAKER_00I have another kind of view on this. I don't think she did the right thing killing him. Because I think that she, I mean, she obviously thinks it's what she has to do. But I think in a weird way, queens are allowed a little bit more maybe leeway in how violent they can be. Did you do you know what I'm trying to say? I do 100%. They're allowed a bit more grace than kings. Kings have to be more ruthless. If she Or is this us being sexist a little bit?
SPEAKER_04No, I well, I don't know. I was gonna say, if she, at least at the at the very least, if we were gonna find a different kind of workaround here, if she had just confidently told Damon to do it, do you not think it would have sent the same message and maybe would have actually worked better because she wouldn't have had to be the one to do it, which was clearly difficult for and she's like snot is coming. I mean, dude, it was awful. She's miserable doing this.
SPEAKER_00This will reinforce the people who don't think a woman should be queen because she couldn't do it, and also she fucks it up. It's awful, yeah. And I I I see what uh Otto meant. Like, let Damon do it. Yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be messier, it's gonna be worse than that. I don't want to be hacked at.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. He literally, he literally leans his head forward, like exposing his neck to make it easier for her, because it's like, dude, get it over with. But I loved his final line. I did my best. I did my best. As as it's basically happening, yeah. I did my best. And I mean, go ahead Can I ask you something about some of Otto's final moments? When he's when he's saying exactly what you just said, when he's saying have Damon do it, do you think there's like a little part of Otto that even in his final moments is like respect is a good job. You beat me. I was gonna say, is auto scheming a little bit? Is auto, is auto like You think so? Well, just because he knows that there's always gonna be contention with Damon and Reneira, no matter what, like people will always view Damon with so much respect from the combat stuff and like the male presence in the like being king. I wondered if that was a little bit of auto in his final moments, like seed, like seeds of doubt. Like have Damon do it because that will reinforce to the people who are all watching this that Damon should be the one on the throne, just to throw a little bit more like dissension and doubt into their family.
SPEAKER_00Or or by telling, like maybe saying Damon should do it, then Rainier will do it. Like they won't listen to him.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, could be, yeah.
SPEAKER_00A little bit of that.
SPEAKER_04Just like a little bit of like throwing like just just one last sort of volley of of uh.
SPEAKER_00I think it could be that. I I easily think it could be that. I I also think it also could be like at the end, he knows he's gonna die. And at the end, like he had animosity and hatred, and maybe not hatred, but Damon, they just didn't like each other.
SPEAKER_04But I wonder if they were so polar opposite of people.
SPEAKER_00But I wonder if it's like, dude, you won, man, do it. Like tip his cap a little bit, like hey, have Damon finish the good game at the end of the like go for it.
SPEAKER_04Dude, I think both could be complete like I think I can see both completely.
SPEAKER_00Um well, so the head flies off, and and then this is where we get so much good imagery. She is standing in pools of his blood and walking up the iron throne with the blood on her feet, and then I think the best shot, actually, it's a tough call between that first shot, because the the one with Jace in the water, and this shot. This might be the better one, barely, but it's the better one. This is the better blood. This is yes, that that's a good thing. And she's on the throne. There's so many layers to that. It's such good, you know, it's such a good analogy for what's going on. And symbolism, imagery, all of it.
SPEAKER_04Dude, yeah. When I'm saying like they do this better than anyone, even uh you brought up Lord of the Rings. The Lord of the Rings is in the same tier, but these kinds of shots, like these scenes with with the with the symbolism of the bloody footsteps, the reflection in the pool of blood, they do that to me better than anyone else. Anyone out there, any show you watch or see anything like that. These these moments are better. Like that's when you watch that, you're like, you don't get this anywhere else. This is this is a different tier. This is a different one. It's rare. It's rare to find out. It's rare, man. I don't know. I'm putting this as my one-one. For shots like that, for the reflection and the bloody footsteps, this is this is what sets apart HBO, Game of Thrones type of shows.
SPEAKER_00It's it's multi-layered because she has to wade through blood to get there. He also failed, and it's his blood in his attempt to rule in front of the throne.
SPEAKER_05Spilled all out in on the floor in front of the room. In front of the throne. On the steps leading up to it.
SPEAKER_00Do you know what it reminded me of a very little bit? Um, you you saw Dune part two? Yeah. Where the Baron is crawling up the throne. Oh, yeah. And he's halfway up, and Paul comes in and stabs him in the neck. Like he he he dies literally on the steps towards the throne. On the metaphor up to the throne for his attempt to get there. Yep. It is fantastic.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00And I'm one final little bit here. Uh um, Damon going to the other guy, Lord Jasper, the one who tried to uh rape Alicent. Yeah. And he's like, tell my lady wife, hey, go on. No problem. And again, it's just Damon's the fucking man.
SPEAKER_04Like doesn't even want to hear it. It's like, nope, no, you're done. No, your talking part is over in this.
SPEAKER_00Like, and also like Otto deserved that sort of respect and the scene and all of that. Like, he, you know, the I mean cliche at this point, but he played the Game of Thrones and the Lost. But he was the really good player. He he set up this whole thing. He set up all of this, sending Allison to Viserys, starting a new line of secession. You could really say that this entire thing is because of Otto Hightower, and that alone deserves some respect. So that death has to then kind of take its time. And then with the other guy, to be honest, I barely even know what he did last season, whatever. Head gone, no problem, no respect. It's over.
SPEAKER_02That's due so good.
SPEAKER_00And the crowd, too, being there was awesome. Like the crowd, silent, observant. Mm-hmm. Having that audience made those scenes so much more impactful because everyone knows who Otto Hightower is. We didn't even talk about the literal final scene.
SPEAKER_04That's why I figured we would finish with that. Yeah. Um, Allison coming in, seeing her head on the floor, and like all of the, all of the that's where um Rainier's actress name. One more time for me. Emma Darcy. Emma Darcy. That's where to me, um, in that scene, in the shots back and forth of Alison's face and then Reneer's face, Emma Darcy, this is where I want to like give her the flowers here because if you when you were saying she's or when we were saying she's kind of stepped it up, she's taken, she's won us over, she's taken it to a new level. If you watch her face in that five years, I was about to say, yeah, go for it. Yeah, different emotions that that kind of process and wash over as she's from a mix of uh surprise that Allison is coming in, and then the transition to the guilt and the shock, the guilt of knowing that her father's head is on the floor, but then the hardening at the end. There's a hardened, like it things kind of come into, you know, it's it goes from uncertainty and nervous and shock into like this resolve to what I she had to do.
SPEAKER_00What I saw it as was a a shot of like I'm sorry. Like it was a quick little glimpse of it where it was like, I'm sorry, and then the firm the hardening of the face, where that was like, I had to do this. Bingo.
SPEAKER_04That's yeah, it was it was and and um for everything that like has happened between them, there's been a lot of back and forth. Like, you gotta think to me, what we were just talking about before, where Rhaenyra lost her kids. Like, she just lost Jace days ago. This is the game. This is the game. This is the prior. We both have lost so much, and it's that it's that initial feeling of, oh my gosh, this is my childhood friend whose dad I just basically, you know, slaughtered. She were beheaded. And then so it's that sort of washing over, and then as it washes away, it's that realization, this no, we're playing the game. Like this is we've both lost so much, but this is what I have to do because we're playing the game. So I mean What a great episode.
SPEAKER_00I did not expect it to be this good.
SPEAKER_04No, I don't think anybody really did. I have this thought that I love I it's it's just in my imagination, but I love to imagine that the writers of the show and and the creators of the show were hearing all of that criticism from season two where so many people were saying it was like a filler season and not enough happened that they and but just them like kind of content to think about okay, how what are what you just wait, you wait until the start of season three. Let's let's see, let's see.
SPEAKER_00Tell me tell me more about filler episodes when these so I mean I agree, like they season two was that sort of stumbling, sort of boring one or two good scenes. I think that's the problem is that they're making House of the Dragon four seasons when in all honesty it probably would have been a solid three seasons to get it all out. But they kind of had to drag season two out a little bit. I mean, we'll see. There's only I think there's what, eight episodes in the season? Something like that, yeah. It's it's gonna be. We'll see how this goes and if they can continue this sort of pace. I mean, I did keep I did read a little bit, like I told you. They've got a lot of good stuff. Like there's a lot of good. They've got all the material ready. I mean, dude, because like all of the other contenders, Damon, Ranira, Aegon, Amund, Alicent, Elena. I mean, we've lost a few people, but uh like the core root is still around. So, dude, I'm I this has been great. I I didn't know how much I missed this show. It's because it's it's just been so good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, it really is. It's the these when you watch like these first two episodes, it it feels well, I've said it before, it feels like we're back in the glory days of season one, but maybe even more than that now. Like we're starting to get into some of the best TV that I feel like I've watched in the last couple years at least. Yeah. I mean, yeah, I know I don't want to exaggerate too much here, but this show, like watching this, gives me like that feeling of watching old Game of Thrones days back when you know when we were in school and stuff, like when it was all fresh, and it was like you were realizing how good a show could be. It feels like we're in the process of that with House of the Dragons season three right now. It's like you think you know the peak, you don't know the peak yet. Like they they haven't showed you the peak yet.
SPEAKER_00There is uh there's one scene, and I don't know if it's gonna happen this season. It might be the finale. I you're gonna shit yourself. I'm so ready. It actually might. I'll get my diaper ready. I I know I'm not gonna say it's the greatest Game of Thrones scene ever, but it's gonna be a top five. Yeah, I think. So but then if they don't do it this season, I'm gonna have to wait like a year and a half before I could talk to you about it. Yeah, well, it's the price we we pay for good television here. Well, all right, do I mean we I think we talked about I think we talked as long as the episode was long. So Yeah, I think so.
SPEAKER_04If we missed anything, yeah, clearly TV.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was the best. All right, we'll be back next week for episode three. This has been uh Too Much TV. See ya.
