00:00:00 Steve Trapps

The main theme is that it's all original content.

00:00:03 Steve Trapps

So it is.

00:00:06 Steve Trapps

Well, as the word original means never been seen before.

00:00:11 Steve Trapps (intro/outro)

Welcome to the scrum Facilitators Community podcast.

00:00:14 Steve Trapps (intro/outro)

The place for real conversations around Scrum so.

00:00:18 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Welcome to the Scrum Facilitators podcast.

00:00:21 Sjoerd Kranendonk

My name is Sjoerd Kranendonk

00:00:23 Sjoerd Kranendonk

I'm here with Steve traps.

00:00:25 Sjoerd Kranendonk

We're joined reaching hands over over the channel.

00:00:30 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Because Steve's in the UK, I'm in the Netherlands and we're here today to discuss some exciting stuff we're working on because Steve.

00:00:39 Sjoerd Kranendonk

We're heading towards the second conference.

00:00:43 Steve Trapps

They said it wouldn't last.

00:00:45 Steve Trapps

We would never do it.

00:00:46 Steve Trapps

We did it.

00:00:48 Steve Trapps

They've got the second conference coming along in November.

00:00:51 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Yeah. We're, we're.

00:00:52 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Gearing up to prove we're not one trick ponies, right?

00:00:55 Steve Trapps

We're 1 1/2 because we're halfway through doing it. No, it's it's good, it's exciting, it's good. And and the fact that actually there.

00:01:05 Steve Trapps

The the love and the community for it again, that's I think that's what I'm noticing is the fact people are actually wanting to before or the first time people can be curious.

00:01:15 Steve Trapps

And wonder what's going on.

00:01:18 Steve Trapps

There's been a lot of love from the community in which, you know, curiosity is a good thing the first time.

00:01:26 Steve Trapps

It's with the scrum facilitators.

00:01:27 Steve Trapps

It's an original conference.

00:01:29 Steve Trapps

And apparently people liked it so much they're willing to sign up and do it again in November.

00:01:35 Steve Trapps

So this is good and.

00:01:38 Sjoerd Kranendonk

So, so, so that, that's that's because people might be listening to this, that didn't go to the conference or haven't heard about it before.

00:01:45 Sjoerd Kranendonk

So what is the conference like is, is there a theme or what is it about?

00:01:51 Steve Trapps

The the main theme is that it's all original content, so it is.

00:01:58 Steve Trapps

Well, that's the.

00:01:59 Steve Trapps

Word original means never been seen before, never been heard before, so there's times you go to conferences and there's times you go to meet ups and you think ohh I really enjoyed it when I heard this person talk before and or.

00:02:13 Steve Trapps

It's an interesting topic, but I've heard it all before.

00:02:16 Steve Trapps

Yes, or I've seen this talk.

00:02:17 Steve Trapps

I've seen this presentation before.

00:02:19 Steve Trapps

How much value am I getting out of this one of the?

00:02:21 Steve Trapps

Things that the criteria is that we've got.

00:02:24 Steve Trapps

There's hey, this should never have been seen before.

00:02:27 Steve Trapps

Well, First off, this should be an interesting topic.

00:02:30 Steve Trapps

This isn't me talking about what I had for lunch yesterday.

00:02:35 Steve Trapps

It should be an interesting topic that the community feel and you know, we've got people reviewing the the submissions.

00:02:44 Steve Trapps

And so this is what we're keeping in centrally in our head is how interesting would this be the community.

00:02:49 Steve Trapps

And then once we get people into the room.

00:02:55 Steve Trapps

It's it's up to the uh the speakers to make it engaging to.

00:02:58 Steve Trapps

Make it a valuable thing.

00:03:00 Steve Trapps

And that's the key thing.

00:03:01 Steve Trapps

What we saw last year was people coming away, feeling that they'd seen and witnessed content they hadn't seen before, and it was done in a scale that was.

00:03:16 Steve Trapps

It felt like friends coming together.

00:03:20 Steve Trapps

There was something Syrian, one of the other scrum facilitators said.

00:03:23 Steve Trapps

Because, you know, we were running around trying to get things sorted first in the morning, or maybe it was the afternoon before the conference.

00:03:30 Steve Trapps

And Syrian was really calm.

00:03:34 Steve Trapps

Why are you so calm?

00:03:36 Steve Trapps

We're doing a conference tomorrow.

00:03:39 Steve Trapps

If it goes wrong, we've just got friends come.

00:03:41 Steve Trapps

Around and I thought that was really powerful insight because in my head it set the tone, it set the tone for that whole day.

00:03:50

Yeah, it did.

00:03:52 Sjoerd Kranendonk

And that's also the reason, Steve, why we decided this year to keep it the same, basically because last year we sold out I think way before the actual conference ran and yeah, like there were there were a lot of people that we had to like.

00:04:09 Sjoerd Kranendonk

To my feeling disappoint, so we discussed when planning the new conference like should we go to another venue to make it bigger?

00:04:17 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Like get hundreds of people in, see what could be the next step and we consciously decided with exactly this what you just said in mind to keep it at our own training location.

00:04:30 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Knowing that we could only sell 50 tickets, maybe stretch it up to 60, we'll have to see about that depending on how many speakers we get in at and stuff.

00:04:41 Sjoerd Kranendonk

But keep it small because we really like that aspect of it, and it also of course helps connect to the theme because it's an original conference.

00:04:50 Sjoerd Kranendonk

It should also be a safe space to experiment as a speaker, like not to experiment with quality, but to experiment with ways of delivery.

00:05:02 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Interactive work forums like maybe going without a PowerPoint for the first time in your career because we do coach people a bit on that right in the selection process.

00:05:11 Sjoerd Kranendonk

It's not like it's all up to them how they want to do it now.

00:05:14 Sjoerd Kranendonk

We have also certain guidelines that match our teaching style, for instance, because it does have to also make a difference, not just the original, but also like you're coming to Scrum facilitators.

00:05:25 Sjoerd Kranendonk

So it has to be feel a bit like that.

00:05:28 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Although yeah, there's also personal touch of course.

00:05:31 Steve Trapps

And you can say I saw that talk for the very first time at the Scrum Facilitators Conference, and now it's at Scrum Day World.

00:05:41 Steve Trapps

Being seen presented to however many hundreds.

00:05:44 Steve Trapps

Of people I.

00:05:45 Steve Trapps

Was there the exclusivity of seeing the first one and seeing how it's, you know evolved over time, so?

00:05:50 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Exactly. And it's also a really nice way to work with speakers, right, because we're we're paying all our speakers, we're having a flat fee. So we're not discriminating between keynotes or or workshops and UMUM.

00:06:03 Sjoerd Kranendonk

We do place a lot of trust in our speakers, as you said, like it's up to them to then make the day a success and we can only do, like, facilitate the surroundings.

00:06:16 Steve Trapps

And that's a key thing as well that.

00:06:19 Steve Trapps

We're here to help.

00:06:21 Steve Trapps

Make the day go smoothly and we also made a.

00:06:25 Steve Trapps

Conscious decision that none of us, none of the scrum facilitators would actually put a talk or workshop into that space.

00:06:33 Steve Trapps

Obviously things happened and last year we we unfortunately somebody dropped out and we were you know, hey we were agile, we responded and we spoke about Scrum Master 3.0.

00:06:46 Steve Trapps

But that was a a last resort kind of thing.

00:06:48 Steve Trapps

We we we we as a a group of people take the step back and allow the Community to step forward so you know.

00:06:55 Sjoerd Kranendonk

We're inviting people to come share their ideas, and we don't want to take a spot there with our ideas.

00:07:02 Steve Trapps

No, no, no.

00:07:03 Steve Trapps

It's so in.

00:07:05 Steve Trapps

We're not there to do that.

00:07:06 Steve Trapps

We're there to create that space that, that friendly.

00:07:08 Steve Trapps

Hey, we're with friends, so just cool.

00:07:12 Sjoerd Kranendonk

So we do have to point out at this moment in time, I'm hoping to get this podcast out quickly that the call for speakers is actually open till June 15.

00:07:23 Sjoerd Kranendonk

So if you have an idea and.

00:07:25 Sjoerd Kranendonk

You have not submitted yet, please go to SF conference dot now and submit your idea.

00:07:30 Sjoerd Kranendonk

It doesn't have to be polished, it can be experimental.

00:07:33 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Just give us.

00:07:34 Sjoerd Kranendonk

An idea of.

00:07:35 Sjoerd Kranendonk

The the general idea that you would like to talk about or the workshop.

00:07:39 Sjoerd Kranendonk

And we can start like our process of refining it, right, Steve?

00:07:44 Steve Trapps

Yeah, yeah, definitely, definitely it's, you know, it's it's not polished.

00:07:49 Steve Trapps

It's the the if it's.

00:07:51 Steve Trapps

The If the seed is there.

00:07:53 Steve Trapps

If the idea is there.

00:07:55 Steve Trapps

Don't worry, there's plenty of.

00:07:56 Steve Trapps

Time we can we can work with that.

00:07:56 Sjoerd Kranendonk

You know, trust the process.

00:07:58 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Of of getting there and getting something valuable out and.

00:08:01 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Also, ticket sales have.

00:08:03 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Started so actually as we're recording this on June 1st, the tickets still started today.

00:08:09 Sjoerd Kranendonk

I think we already sold like 10 to 15 tickets and we only have 50.

00:08:15 Sjoerd Kranendonk

So I'm I'm hoping that maybe we have to put a message when we publish this.

00:08:19 Sjoerd Kranendonk

It's sold out already or just 20 tickets now.

00:08:22 Sjoerd Kranendonk

So I will make sure to put that in the show.

00:08:24 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Once when we publish, however, tickets are available, so if you are thinking well, I'd like to join.

00:08:30 Sjoerd Kranendonk

This and I can and am willing to travel to Amersfoort on November 9.

00:08:38

It's a lovely.

00:08:38 Steve Trapps

Place to travel to.

00:08:39 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Yes, yes, Steve, Steve does.

00:08:41 Sjoerd Kranendonk

A lot of traveling there.

00:08:42 Sjoerd Kranendonk

So he's the expert.

00:08:43 Steve Trapps

Yeah, I I love it.

00:08:45 Steve Trapps

I mean the air is OK, but Hansford itself is lovely.

00:08:49 Steve Trapps

You know, just tell work you come into a.

00:08:50 Steve Trapps

Conference and then spend.

00:08:51 Steve Trapps

The day in Amsterdam town centre, that's what.

00:08:54 Steve Trapps

I would do so.

00:08:55 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Yeah, it's it's a really cosy town. So, so and UM. And of course, it will be awesome to meet, meet you if.

00:09:01 Sjoerd Kranendonk

You come visit.

00:09:04 Steve Trapps

Lots of chip shops.

00:09:05 Steve Trapps

I seem to remember.

00:09:06 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Yeah, probably 8 shops.

00:09:07 Steve Trapps (intro/outro)

Lots of chip.

00:09:10 Sjoerd Kranendonk

You mean where you can get slice, right?

00:09:12 Steve Trapps

Yeah, fries, chips in UK.

00:09:14 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Just for the non UK people like.

00:09:16 Steve Trapps

Right, yeah, I've forgotten that big portions as well.

00:09:19 Sjoerd Kranendonk

If you say.

00:09:19 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Chips in the Netherlands, people think of crisps.

00:09:23 Steve Trapps

Yeah, but that's just cause they're crazy.

00:09:27 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Don't make me bring up Brexit.

00:09:30

But be careful about that.

00:09:33 Steve Trapps

Nearly mentioned the B word.

00:09:36 Steve Trapps

You started it well.

00:09:38 Steve Trapps

Technically, yes we did.

00:09:39

00:09:42 Sjoerd Kranendonk

00:10:10 Steve Trapps

It's all original.

00:10:13 Sjoerd Kranendonk

And if you have any questions, reach out to us and we'll try to make a few of these smaller podcast episodes, talking about conference, about how we're progressing and also sharing some, maybe some tips and tricks on how to organize your own conference, because we're getting that experience now because we didn't.

00:10:32 Sjoerd Kranendonk

For the second time.

00:10:34 Steve Trapps

It's the second album.

00:10:35 Steve Trapps

It's the problematic second album.

00:10:38 Sjoerd Kranendonk

The sophomore album?

00:10:39 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Oh, that's just always the the hard one.

00:10:41 Sjoerd Kranendonk

But but we're we're not going to postpone it for a few years.

00:10:44 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Just going to do it, no?

00:10:48 Sjoerd Kranendonk

OK.

00:10:48 Sjoerd Kranendonk

Thank you Steve, for for talking with me about this and no worries.

00:10:53 Sjoerd Kranendonk
