A Reading From My Memoir: Chapter 3, "The Brahman Class" (S2, E5)
Show Notes:
In this episode I read the third chapter "The Brahman Class," from my memoir, Not As Crazy As You Think. In 1994, I arrive in New Delhi, India to visit an old college friend, who was born into the royal Brahman Class. After meeting Sumit's parents, I learn how this highest class believes they’ve earned their lucky place in the caste system at the top of the evolutionary pyramid through the principle of Karma. And all other Indians deserve their lot as well; particularly the Untouchables—the plagued sect of society that swarms the New Delhi streets.
Regretfully, during a discussion at supper with the family, as a naive American female, I unintentionally cross a mighty cultural line with my comment, and probing Mrs. Nayar then becomes suspicious of my trip. After hobnobbing at a party for a night with Sumit’s friends at a neighborhood mansion attended by secular aristocrats, I realize with an anxious stirring I do not belong.
