Who did Sev and Rich go on a date with? Was he into Rich, or was he into Sev? But most importantly, when and how should you move out? Tune in to this week’s episode to find out!

Sev:

Hey guys welcome back to the adulting podcast! Nice weather in Montreal these last couple of days ey Rich?

Rich:

I feel like my seasonal depression is cured, like I was out all day last weekend. And thursday I kid you not I was in my swimsuit tanning on my patio. The snow was melting but I didn’t care, swimsuit on

Sev:

I’m jealous of your day off, you know how tanning is like my favorite thing to do

Rich:

It really helps me to have my thursday off. My schedule really helps me break my week into smaller periods, it’s more tolerable

Sev:

See I have my three day weekend every week, and as amazing as it is, the week is just long without any breaks

Rich:

Stop complaining, I had so much to do last weekend and I barely got anything done because I had an existential crisis that lasted the whole weekend

Sev:

Ooookay rich, what happened…

Rich:

Well, I facetimed with my friend Anna, and she basically said that my place was ugly. I love you Anna, no hate, but it really made me realize that okay I need to step my game up. I have cardboard boxes set up as a coffee table. A coffee table sev.

Sev:

Haahahahja, Well Rich give yourself sometime like you just moved in last summer, and in the middle of covid like it’s normal that you didn’t have time to decorate yet

Rich:

I know, I know, it’s just I don’t even know what to do like it’s so complicated

Sev:

It so happens that this works with this week’s topic, moving out!

Rich:

You think decoration works with this?

Sev:

Yeah yeah, you’ll see. Let’s just start with the basics though

Rich:

Okay go

Sev:

When is the right time to move out?

Rich:

I think you know when the right time to move out is. We’ve talked about it a lot, intuition is something you should develop and fine tune in your life, and I think an instinct to move out can be one of those things. I have a friend who’s thinking of moving out by herself instead of staying with her roommate, and I think it’s her intuition telling her something you know

Sev:

I hope she knows she has to plan this, you know, financially.

Rich:

Yeah of course. Obviously this whole intuition thing I think it applies more to when you’re already in an apartment and have experience

Sev:

Yeah, I agree. And if you live with your parents, I find you know when you’re ready to move. I knew at 17 yo

Rich:

I mean yeah no you it’s pretty intense, moving to a new country at the age of 18…

Rich & Sev:

Harsh

Sev:

So yeah, some people have to leave home for education reasons. And while often times it’s really necessary, you still have to make sure you’re ready to make the move. It implies a lot of responsibilities and it may sound fun at first glance but I’m telling you it can get scary. Obviously if you’re in a situation when you’re not rushed out to move out from your parents or your current place, it’s really good because you can take your time.

Rich:

Yeah, exactly cause sometimes you’re put in a situation where you have to move out even when you’re not ready, ahd that can be tough on the morale

Sev:

I remember when i moved out I didn’t even have a bank account open yet and I had to go get a credit card, I was shitting in my pants. I had no clue what to say and the manager didn’t want to give me one so I had to find an excuse to pay for my books for school. She was like “don’t spend it all on shopping sweetie”

Rich:

Yeah, I would tell a person that was in an easier situation, like leaving from their parents and had time to move out, to figure those things out, figure a little bit of… adulting

Sev:

Ouhhh I see what you did there

Rich:

Not bad ey

Sev:

Yeah not bad at all.

I’m a little bit

Rich:

A little bit

Sev:

I’m a little bit

Rich & Sev:

Lalalalalla, a little bit Alexis

Rich:

So yeah figure out how to adult a little bit before moving out.

Sev:

Yeah like learning the basics of cooking, cleaning, laundry, budgeting, financial responsibilities. Knowing about these things will make it so much easier. I wish I listened to my mom when she gave me cooking tips. I swear it took me at least 2 years to learn how to cook.

Rich:

Omg i remember the food you used to make in our first year of college

Sev:

My lunch was literally a cheese sandwich. And remember that white sauce pasta

Rich:

And that chicken. You made the driest chicken cause you were scared of Salmonella. And no sauce

Sev:

But i was so proud of myself. I remember i sent a picture in our group chat and you were all like what the hell was that

Rich:

It looked like anything but chicken. And that ground beef that turns red and you see blood squirting out

Rich & Sev:

DISGUSTING

Rich:

This youtube video with the scottish mom yelling at her girls, guys if you didn’t see it, it’s a must

Sev:

Yeah we use it on the daily

Rich:

It applies to a lot of things! But anyways, me for instance, I just left because of covid, and at a time where we knew nothing of what was going to happen, I didn’t want to be in contact with my family members when I would always have to leave the house to work in more “at risk” environments. So I just left and played it by ear. Thank God my mom was a neat freak and taught me how to keep a place clean, that really helped

Sev:

Your mom is the cutest

Rich:

I know I miss her soooo much. But she loved me so much that she wouldn’t even let me cook! I mean that and the fact that she didn’t want anyone messing up her kitchen

Sev:

I’m not surprised, you’re just like your mom in that sense you love when things go your way and are organized the way you like it

Rich:

Hey, at least it’s clean and organized. But yeah so I was good for cleaning, but cooking and budgeting and etc I wasn’t as ready. Here I am 8 months in and it took me some time, but I got the hang of it

Sev:

But you know Rich, it’s like what we said last episode, nothing prepares you for real life. I feel like the same applies for moving out and having to figure out adulting by yourself

Rich:

Yeah, I agree. So before leaving from your parents, try to get as much knowledge and practice as possible, have a budget and a financial plan, and listen to the adulting podcast

Sev:

I would also suggest keeping Xtina’s phone number on the speed dial. I know she’s saved me a few times

Rich:

Hahahaha for those of you who don’t know, Xtina is my mom, Christina, she was nicknamed Xtina by my friends in university. Why did we start calling her like that Sev?

Sev:

I think it was Bea she thought she looked sooo good and young and she was like Christina Aguilera

Rich:

Yeah the story kind of sucks now that we say it. But hey, a star is born

Sev:

How did Xtina take you leaving her to live by your own?

Rich:

I think it was scary for her, so keeping a good relationship with your parents is really important. I think it brought us a little bit closer in a sense. But she’s soooo scared for me all the time. At first she was scared I’d end up living in a dump you know

Sev:

Well yeah I’d be scared too, a lot of people can be blinded by the whole idea of moving out and chose to live in a not so cute place

Rich:

Yeah so choosing your place is also an important point. What would you start with Sev?

Sev:

The neighborhood. No matter if it’s your first or third time moving out, you start with that. After you’ve found your budget, you look at where you work, where your social life is going to be, and the kind of places you want next to you. It’s as simple as that.

Rich:

And then, I think it’s all about compromise. Obviously I was lucky enough to save enough money by living at my parents, so I could afford a cuter neighboorhood. But some people they have to say well okay I’ll just compromise on distance from work and I’ll take a bus for 10 extra minutes in the morning before getting to a metro station

Sev:

Or others will say well yeah my place isn’t around cute restaurants and shops but it’s less expensive and I have a metro pass that easily gets me anywhere so I’ll choose that. It really depends on what your priority is, and just between the 2 of us I find our priorities for our apartment is very different.

Rich:

Exactly. I say it’s the easiest way to do it, figure out what’s important to you. And in today’s real estate market, it’s hard to find apartments. I swear in Montreal last spring the apartment hunting started so early, and it was so quick too! Like I was writing to this landlord on kijiji the day his ad was out and I was already the 75th in line to visit.

Sev:

Yeah that’s a stressful thing though, if you find something you like, you have to make a decision quickly and basically tell them on the spot that you’re taking the place. But I find it really depends on the year too, right now downtown for example has more vacant spots but the previous years it was super hard to find something.

Rich:

Yeah you’ll lose a lot of nice places by thinking about it, but once it happens a couple of times you just won’t mess around.

Sev:

I think you have to mention that your place was also very cheap for what it is.

Rich:

Yeah I was super lucky and found an amazing modern and clean place for way cheaper than the surroundings. But that’s the thing: everyone’s looking for cheap and beautiful. These places exist, I’ve seen so many! But they’re taken super quickly because a lot of these people are experienced and know what a good deal looks like.

Sev:

Then once you figured out where you want to be, you have to know what you want in your apartment. Do you want amenities? A patio? Sun for your plants? An open space? Modern appliances?

Rich:

And most importantly, what are you willing to compromise on?

Sev:

I think there’s always something you won’t like about your apartment that you’ll have to accept. Me for example I find my bedroom is too small. BUT i have a big closet and nice living space so it compensates for that. But I think the more you look at places the more you know what you want to compromise on

Rich:

It’s true you have to look at a lot of places, especially if it’s your first place, to know what’s out there. If your expectations are super high and they never go lower, you’re either gonna have to pay more, or you’re just never gonna find anything. Me for example I knew I wanted to be close to you, but I also knew i didn’t prioritize amenities like a gym or a pool. You just need to figure it out.

Sev:

Once you visit a couple of places, you’ll get a good sense of what’s available in your price range in this neighborhood, and comparing becomes easier. That’s how you narrow down your options, by comparing.

Rich:

I also find that you approach things differently whether it’s your first or like fourth place. Like you sev, you 100% knew what you wanted when it came to your furniture

Sev:

Oh definitely. Throughout the years I knew what color palette I liked, I knew the textures, the arrangement, everything was in my pinterest board. I had a section for every room in my condo.

Rich:

Not that you have that many rooms

Sev:

No but it gets you inspired. Because once you know what you want you can find 2-3 stores you like and you’ll be able to find furniture within your price range. because let’s be honest all furniture stores have about the same trendy things; it’s just a question of quality and price you’re looking for.

Rich:

And I find that it shows when you compare your place to mine. You’re so quick to make your decisions and your place is already fully furnished because you knew what you wanted. I honestly just bought the basics and was like I’ll figure it out once i’m settled in. But girl…

Sev:

But you realize it took me a year of making a mood board for my apartment to figure this out. That’s why I tell you you need to chill. You’re overthinking this. Just figure out the vibe of your apartment and experiment, things don’t need to be perfect. I bought stuff that I look at now and I already know i’ll be selling soon. But I’ve made mistakes! Remember those leather couches?

Rich:

How could I forget. Comfortable ish, not so cute though. All black everything

Sev:

Me and my brother sold basically everything from that place before we left.

Rich:

A fresh start

Sev:

The only thing I miss from my previous apartments is that patio when I lived next to McGill

Rich:

Wow, that patio, so many memories

Sev:

You remember that guy that threw a glass on the patio just to get our attention?

Rich:

Omg no we have to tell them this story

Sev:

So we were tanning on my patio, and this glass just breaks on my patio, the guy above and to the right of me just threw this glass, and said oh sorry let me come help you to clean it. So he came down, knocked, and cleaned. Then he started asking if we knew any restaurants close by, what was it Rich?

Rich:

So I think he was on vacation with his friend who lived in your building, and he was like oh my friend is so boring I want to chill with other people

Sev:

Omg I remember that

Rich:

So after we were like oh we know this good vegan place you should go there, and he’s like well let’s meet there at like 7, and we went!!!

Sev:

It honestly felt like we were on a double date, except there was only one person and the two of us

Rich

He could’ve been a psychopath

Sev:

He kinda was. He said he’s been listening to my voice for days on the patio.

Rich:

Anyways, okay I’ll finish this story, and then we had dinner, it was fun you know we had nothing to do. But me and sev kept wondering oh is this guy straight, does he like guys? Cause he was super flirty with the both of us, and we didn’t really know if he was hitting on one of us, so then we go back to the building

Sev:

And he tried to kiss me!!!

Rich:

It was soooo funny. And then he said he broke the glass on PURPOSE just to meet you.

Sev:

That was a crazy story. Ok back to the important stuff. We were saying that you and I were different because it’s my third place and you it’s your first. But Rich like it also depends on where you are in life you know. We both started work and we both know more what we want in life

Rich:

Yeah, I think you’re right. We both didn’t want to settle, we’re not at the age where any room with a bed and a couch would do. Do you remember the days where we could just fall asleep on a couch and not wake up with back pain

Sev:

You know what I miss?

Rich:

what

Sev:

Not working out, eating like a pig and NOT getting cellulite.

Rich:

Gyms being closed really ruined our shape it’s honestly sad, we’re supposed to look good in our twenties.

Sev:

Ugh don’t let me get started. Okay so Rich, what have you been doing for decorating, we need to talk about this since you had your crisis

Rich:

Well, I’m a guy that’s all about inspiration. I first look online on way too many websites, I look for different coffee tables, entryway furniture, design ideas on pinterest. And I also go look in store. I need to like see options to know what I like. I know it sucks I don’t have any other plan I just basically look until I find something that I like.

Sev:

I feel like you can’t look too much. You need to know what style you’re going for and start from there to get inspired. And it doesn’t end in one shot, you’re going to keep looking at your apartment and change things up.

Rich:

Yeah I know but I was just so sad I wanted to take care of it nowwww

Sev:

I agree with you about inspiration. My pinterest is crazy flowing with ideas, so I would really suggest that to people. And also to be careful when looking online, because you end up looking for things that are way above your price range. But you can get inspired and then go on website that are wihtin your price range. They always make dupes of high end brands

Rich:

Okay but what can I do more? I can take my time but like I want to get it done you know

Sev:

You can ask your parents! Especially you Rich your parents are really good with decorating and renovation, for sure their input will be a good one.

Rich:

Friends, family, gotcha

Sev:

If not I also think you have to go with something that makes you feel good. I find the environment of your apartment is super important. You can live in a place that’s being renovated for a while, but it can get overwhleming to not have a finished place that inspires you and works for you

Rich:

You’re right, like after my little crisis I moved my mirror from one wall to another, and I got rid of a DISGUSTING

Sev:

DISGoSTING

Rich:

So yeah a nasty carpet, and i rolled up my yoga mat which was laying in the middle of my living room, and i don’t know but seeing the hardwood floors more and changing things up really made more sense. It was less sectioned are more flowy you know

Sev:

I know, I told you, space is valuable. Space is expensive. You’re lucky because you have so much space in your place, I pay more than you and I have less. Don’t fill up your place with stuff just to make it full. You need a good balance and have just the right amount of stuff so that it can flow.

Rich:

And please people, buy plants!

Sev:

Yes! I love flowers, they make me so happy

Rich:

I also love them, I think my orchid is still alive, Rachel would be proud. I’m telling you orchids are tricky!

Sev:

I don’t know how you guys keep plants alive. Like flowers for a few weeks I’m good, but anything else will 100% die and I’m not gonna invest in something if i’m going to kill it

Rich:

That’s a very inspiring quote Sev. Don’t spend on something if you’ll kill it.

Sev:

You know it. So rich, did you have anything to add?

Rich:

I think this has been helpful. If you guys want to get inspired you can follow us on our pinterest boards. Sev’s is a lot more figured out

Rich:

that mimosa was so good but it kind of hit me

Sev:

Do we still have bacon left?

Rich:

Ok you can’t complain about cellulite now

Sev:

Honestly i tried eating turkey bacon it really wasnt good so yeah I accept my cellulite.
