Introduction (00:07):

Welcome to MCFP Meet the Experts where ORR Protection's, VP of Engineering, Lee Kaiser, interviews industry insiders on all things mission critical fire protection.

Lee Kaiser (00:20):

Today we're here with Angela Zandona, account manager in the Northern California market out of the Bay area. Thanks for spending a little time with me to talk and ask you some questions about fire protection.

Angelo Zandona (00:31):

Thank you, Lee.

Lee Kaiser (00:32):

One of the first things I like to ask is... So tell me, how did you get into fire protection? It's not like it's a big industry. Tell me, how did you find fire protection as a career?

Angelo Zandona (00:42):

You know what, I guess I would like to say that, you know, fire protection kind of found me. I was actually working as a personal trainer in my early twenties and Bill Yellin, actually his wife said, 'Hey! My husband's looking for... has an open position. I think you would get along really well with him. And so I met Bill, we hit it off great. And next thing you knew, I started my career in the fire protection industry and I've been involved in it ever since. About 18 years now.

Lee Kaiser (01:09):

So a referral, you know, and Bill being, of course, our Western Regional Sales Manager and also out of the Northern California office for so... Well that's great, that personal referral. That's a good story. So I'm sure you've been over the time involved in a bunch of different projects. Do you have like a favorite project you can think of or a favorite project type?

Angelo Zandona (01:33):

I would say my favorite project type would be a core and shell. I really like to get the core and shell and like a high rise or mid-rise building. And then as new clients and customers come in, I like the build out those buildings. That'd be my favorite.

Lee Kaiser (01:44):

Okay. So those are, is that a lot of fire alarm work? Usually?

Angelo Zandona (01:46):

Yeah, usually a lot of fire alarm work and maybe sometimes some suppression, maybe some air sampling. So it's kind of very dynamic depending on the customer's needs.

Lee Kaiser (01:54):

So like whatever tenant's in that area.

Angelo Zandona (01:55):

Correct.

Lee Kaiser (01:55):

Okay. So do you feel like, at ORR you have a chance to meet all those different customer needs?

Angelo Zandona (02:02):

I do. Absolutely. At ORR Protection really has a large breadth of technologies that we are a distributors for and that we utilize.

Lee Kaiser (02:12):

That's great. So, outside of that, are there any project types that you'd like dreamed of doing? Is there like a dream project you can think of?

Angelo Zandona (02:22):

I would say definitely a stadium. A sport's stadium would be an amazing opportunity, you know, to win a project like that.

Lee Kaiser (02:28):

Oh, that's great. Are you a big sports fan?

Angelo Zandona (02:30):

Yes, I am.

Lee Kaiser (02:31):

So what's your favorite football team?

Angelo Zandona (02:33):

49ers.

Lee Kaiser (02:33):

The 49ers. Great. Awesome. What technologies, fire protection technologies, do you feel like you're an expert at?

Angelo Zandona (02:42):

I would say definitely controls, fire alarm fire protection, also sprinkler type stuff, reaction... That's my sweet spot.

Lee Kaiser (02:50):

So a lot of those things kind of fit in those favorite projects, core and shell, high rise.

Angelo Zandona (02:54):

Correct.

Lee Kaiser (02:55):

Those are essential to those building types. What do you think the next five to 10 years holds in fire protection? Is there any type of technology changes that you expect to see?

Angelo Zandona (03:08):

You know, the technology that we're starting to see, I thin, is wireless technology. Wireless devices, horn strobes, smoke detectors. And I really see that only becoming better. They're very limited right now but I see it becoming better in that, you know, we can put that stuff into historical buildings and maybe places that traditionally we wouldn't be able to get to with very difficult places. And so I see the wireless technology really changing fire alarm industry.

Lee Kaiser (03:35):

If you had to consider an industry or application for fire protection, what do you think you're most expert at?

Angelo Zandona (03:45):

I would say fire alarm systems in hospitals and data centers.

Lee Kaiser (03:51):

Yeah. Well, Angelo, thanks for spending some time with me here. Again, Angela Zandona, account manager out of Northern California in the Bay area. Thanks so much for spending a little time with us today.

Angelo Zandona (04:01):

Thank you, Lee. Appreciate it.
