Favourite pool that you ever swam in.
Michael Klim: 0:05
Oh, it's easy, I'd have to say. the Challenge stayed in Perth
Danielle Spurling: 0:13
Excellent. Yeah, it's a lovely complex, favourite open water swim location.
Michael Klim: 0:22
Well, i would say, when Noosa is the way it's going to be this weekend, it's almost unbeatable. But I have had the pleasure to swim, to do a few ocean swims around Capri in Italy, and the water there is stunning because there is no, obviously, the sand doesn't get sort of willed up at all. So the clarity and swimming around some of those caves was very, very memorable. So yeah, Italy was also was also memorable.

Favourite butterfly drill.
Michael Klim: 1:02
That's a good one. I did a lot of freestyle kick butterfly just to work on really flat body positioning. I think I still, you know, still very I had a really good sort of when it comes to my thoracic flexibility so I could get my hips up and at times, if anything too much. So working on straight, you know, freestyle kick butterfly, sometimes with your head up as well, helped me to sort of, you know, flatten out my butterfly, which you know obviously ended up being, you know, the butterfly of the future. If you look at, you know, phelps and Dressel and Skooling and those guys that you know pushed the envelope in that event, it just became a lot flatter than what it was, let's say, the likes of Gross and beyondy and Scott Miller and those sort of guys where, you know, i think we're in between the two different strokes in my era. So I think now it's become almost a very flat butterfly.
Danielle Spurling: 2:04
And how about your favourite freestyle drill?
Michael Klim: 2:08
Well, this is the drill that changed my career. Really, it'd be dolphin kick freestyle. It's dolphin kick freestyle with either with your head up or, you know, head down. But it was because of that drill that I ended up implementing that into races and with the suits having really good strum core. That was, yeah, and it's a sprint drill which we only used for 15, 20 metres and I was able to maintain that speed throughout the whole, say, 25 metres, and then I pushed it out to 50 and I was able to push 24 seconds or so. So I thought it was had some merit to implement it into my races.
Danielle Spurling: 2:50
What's your favourite all-time training set?
Michael Klim: 2:53
You know, i think you know it wasn't really one to sort of to kind of, you know, break my spirit or, you know, get me to a level where I'm, you know, in coherent by the pool or anything like that. Everything was almost very measured and we were doing like you know, like day testing and things like that. So I would really look forward to doing our, you know our 10-100 step test And that was sort of like, you know, if I was on some with that and then even our 650s butterfly on two minutes and if I was able to hit my back end speed for the 650s and then, you know, obviously doing a good you know the step test. you know I knew that I was on some. So there's a couple really measurable tests that I did that would translate well into my races.
Danielle Spurling: 3:44
What was the step test time on? What were the 10-100s on?
Michael Klim: 3:48
So they changed. So you do four, let's say they're probably on 140, which will heart rate around 120 or so. Then you push the rest, then you do three on about two minutes and your heart rate is about 160 or so. So that would drop to with the heart rate 160, you add threshold, so let's say 102, 103 for me, then 200 at MV02. So I always want to in good shape I could get close to 55. And then that was on about two and a half minutes and then 100 max. You know, in my good, you know in good form, i could push a 51 or 50 point occasionally. But with Gennady timing was 50 point, standard timing 51. But it was very generous. But yeah, so we, yeah, that was. You know that was one of our our sort of go-to tests, test sets.
Danielle Spurling: 4:48
Take care, Michael.
Michael Klim: 4:50
No worries, thanks for having me.
