We, obviously, talk about fishing, but we also talk about the "scam" of winter camping, taking your kids into the backcountry, kayak vs canoe, and fish waffles - wtf?

00:00 - 00:04
Hello, and good day, Eh? to the Super Good Camping podcast. My name is Pamela.

00:04 - 00:05
I'm Tim.

00:05 - 00:07
And we are from supergoodcamping.com.

00:07 - 00:10
We are here because we are on a mission to inspire other families to enjoy camping adventures

00:10 - 00:12
such as we have with our kids.

00:12 - 00:16
Today's guests are a couple of fairly prolific fishermen with great senses of humor as shown

00:16 - 00:20
by the fact that they refer to themselves as a couple of idiots who adventure fish in Canada.

00:21 - 00:24
Please welcome Ben and Adam from Paddleheads. Yay. Welcome.

00:25 - 00:27
Hey. Yes. Thank you. Thanks for having us.

00:27 - 00:29
No. No. Thank you. No. Really?

00:29 - 00:31
Day the Canadian thing where we just thank you. Thank you. No.

00:31 - 00:32
Thank you.

00:32 - 00:32
Oh, the

00:32 - 00:32
story. No.

00:32 - 00:33
No. Really.

00:33 - 00:42
No story. Thank you. So, I right out of the gate, just because I don't know the Eh? origin story,

00:43 - 00:44
how did you guys meet?

00:44 - 00:48
We met through YouTube. We actually each had our own channel.

00:48 - 00:51
I was we were both creating camping and fishing videos.

00:52 - 00:54
We had both started around the same time.

00:55 - 01:02
And I found one of Adam's videos and I watched the entire thing even though he caught no fish in the video.

01:03 - 01:05
And I decided just to reach out to him.

01:05 - 01:10
And, eh? him on Instagram. We started chatting.

01:10 - 01:15
And it turned out that we were both a couple of metalheads who both played music.

01:16 - 01:18
He's a drummer and I'm a bassist.

01:19 - 01:23
And traditionally drummers and bassists get along pretty well.

01:23 - 01:26
At least the ones in the good bands seem to.

01:27 - 01:29
So yeah, we really hit it off.

01:29 - 01:32
We had a lot of, similarities that way.

01:32 - 01:38
Although he grew up in the Toronto area, I was in Kingston eh?, we grew up, you know, very far apart.

01:38 - 01:39
There was a lot of similarities.

01:39 - 01:48
So we just kept talking and shooting videos eh?, doing trips eh?, and, we kind of realized that,

01:48 - 01:51
you know, we're putting out two of the same video.

01:51 - 01:56
You know, when we're on the trip together, you're just getting kind of two different aspects of the same trip.

01:56 - 02:03
So we thought, why not team up, save ourselves some work, and, create videos together?

02:03 - 02:10
Yeah. I would just add to that that it became obvious pretty quick that Ben and I The way we

02:12 - 02:17
work on our videos together, we can be very critical and there's pros and cons to that.

02:17 - 02:24
But we very quickly learned, like, I was aware of my strengths and weaknesses as was Eh?, and

02:24 - 02:26
they complimented each other very well.

02:26 - 02:28
So it was kind of like a yin and yang thing.

02:28 - 02:33
And we felt like together, we were actually able to create eh?

02:36 - 02:39
of stuff that we wanted to make and and the type of trips we wanted to day.

02:39 - 02:41
I was very much aligned.

02:41 - 02:44
And so it was kind of just a natural fit and

02:45 - 02:51
And share the workload. As I'm sure you two know, it's it's a lot of work. Yeah.

02:51 - 02:59
Yeah. I don't I I definitely don't think that most of the consumers of content realize what

02:59 - 03:01
it takes to make that content.

03:01 - 03:09
Like, it's I have so much tripping stuff stashed in my computer that I just I just I it's so daunting.

03:09 - 03:13
Every time I pull it out, I like I look at it because it's like, yay. My kids. Whatever.

03:13 - 03:17
But to to splice it eh?, it's just like, oh, no. No.

03:17 - 03:20
I'm not gonna work on another podcast episode. Whatever.

03:21 - 03:23
So what kind of trips do you guys like to do?

03:23 - 03:26
You mentioned, like, you both enjoy the same types of trips, but what kind of trips are eh??

03:27 - 03:32
Those? So we've learned in time, we like slow trips.

03:34 - 03:41
Not that we don't like doing big trips covering big distance, but it's definitely about the

03:41 - 03:44
fishing for both Ben and I, that is our priority.

03:45 - 03:52
And quite often, we're planning trips based on a specific fish, like we're looking for a fish.

03:52 - 03:56
And so we'll kind of go wherever we have to eh? that fish.

03:57 - 04:05
But yeah, we often will just base camp and we'll stay in the same spot for two or three nights, whatever.

04:05 - 04:08
And we've done trips where we're moving between spots.

04:09 - 04:11
But, yeah, I would say, like, easygoing.

04:12 - 04:13
We we like to push ourselves.

04:13 - 04:18
We've done some pretty big portages in Algonquin. Like, we're not afraid.

04:18 - 04:20
We just know that we'd rather be fishing.

04:23 - 04:29
Cool. And you you do so I have watched a decent amount of your eh?, so I know a bunch of things.

04:29 - 04:33
But, you like to do I see you guys in canoes.

04:33 - 04:35
I also see you in kayaks.

04:36 - 04:38
Do you have do either of you have a preference?

04:40 - 04:44
That's kind of where we both, we we have opposite preferences for sure.

04:44 - 04:46
So I think that kind of it helps the channel.

04:46 - 04:48
It helps bring more variety into the channel.

04:48 - 04:53
I definitely prefer the kayak for fishing. I understand its limitations.

04:53 - 04:55
You can't portage a fishing kayak.

04:55 - 04:59
You know, the the decent ones are 80 to 9,100 pounds.

04:59 - 05:03
So you're not taking that down to one kilometer portage easily.

05:04 - 05:08
So but I love the fishing kayak just for its stability, its comfort.

05:09 - 05:15
I most of the time, I'm standing up when I'm fishing in the fishing kayak, and I just love it.

05:15 - 05:18
It makes more sense for musky fishing too.

05:18 - 05:23
I'm a big musky, a big fan of musky angling, and they're a big fish.

05:23 - 05:26
So you, you need to be able to handle those big fish.

05:26 - 05:33
And the stability of the kayak allows you to eh? a big muskie out of the water or, also to be

05:33 - 05:35
able to perform certain actions.

05:35 - 05:41
You know, when you're fishing in a canoe you're sitting down, and unless you fish a lot you

05:41 - 05:45
kind of realize, you don't realize how limited you are when you're sitting down and fishing.

05:45 - 05:50
You can't perform certain actions with the fishing bait and with musky fishing you gotta do

05:50 - 05:52
like a figure eight beside the boat.

05:52 - 05:56
Anyways, there's special techniques where it's better to be standing for fishing.

05:57 - 05:59
So the fishing kayak, I love it.

06:00 - 06:05
I also love that we can be fishing the same waters, and And if Adam's in a different fishing

06:05 - 06:07
kayak, we don't have to be in the same place.

06:08 - 06:10
He can go fish over there if he wants to.

06:10 - 06:12
I can go fish over there if I want to.

06:12 - 06:13
So that's that's a great thing.

06:13 - 06:17
Whereas with the canoe, it's we have to agree on, yeah, that looks like a good spot. Let's

06:18 - 06:24
Yeah. We've been very fortunate, because I don't own a kayak, but, we're brand ambassadors for

06:24 - 06:28
Front Neck Outfitters, and they've been a big supporter of our channel for a long time.

06:28 - 06:34
And so, we've had a few opportunities to get out, and they'll let me borrow a fishing kayak.

06:34 - 06:37
So, yeah, Ben and I will both be in fishing kayaks.

06:37 - 06:39
We'll try and plan those trips so there's no portages.

06:40 - 06:48
But like eh? like Ben says, there's definitely advantages to a fishing kayak, but there's something about a canoe.

06:49 - 06:51
I can't think of a better term.

06:51 - 06:54
So, I'm going to say eh? something romantic about it.

06:54 - 07:00
It's just like the feeling of being in a canoe. I really like that.

07:00 - 07:05
And actually, the two times oh, this isn't true.

07:05 - 07:09
This is pretty much a big lie, but I've lost a few things off of fishing kayaks.

07:10 - 07:16
And so I've decided that, you know, it's the fishing kayaks fault, mine.

07:17 - 07:21
So I'll look for excuses, you know, to but they have their advantages for sure.

07:21 - 07:26
But with the tripping and the portaging and the camping stuff, the canoe is eh? a way to go.

07:26 - 07:34
And because experience doing that, we've really kind of dialed in, like, what we need in the

07:34 - 07:38
boat and the kind of stuff we bring and how we fish together.

07:38 - 07:42
I would imagine if people were watching us fish, maybe it doesn't come across in the videos,

07:42 - 07:46
but like from afar, Ben and I are like casting over each other all the time.

07:46 - 07:49
Our lines are crossing and we're always watching each other's bait.

07:49 - 07:53
And so it's rare that we get tangled, but we've just gotten like really comfortable fishing

07:53 - 07:54
out of a canoe together.

07:54 - 07:56
So we make it work, right?

07:56 - 08:02
I know there's a lot of people that don't like fishing out of a canoe. So, they're missing out. That's what I think.

08:03 - 08:06
Eh?. You can't you can't beat the portability of a canoe. Right?

08:06 - 08:13
Being able to hit those back lakes and those less fishing pressured areas, you keep getting closer to that.

08:13 - 08:14
Eh? a kayak. I'm sorry. It just is.

08:15 - 08:19
Cleaner, smoother, just the lines. I absolutely agree.

08:20 - 08:21
I'm just curious about the fishing kayak.

08:21 - 08:24
I could just I can't visualize standing up in a kayak.

08:24 - 08:28
But but how is it that stable that you can stand up in it?

08:28 - 08:33
So the hull is kind of like a pontoon style when you look at most of them, but the very stable ones.

08:33 - 08:36
There are some fishing kayaks that are not very stable.

08:37 - 08:39
So, certain people's experiences may differ.

08:40 - 08:48
But in the fishing kayaks that I've used, like from Jackson Kayak, I can stand on one foot comfortably in that fishing kayak. You feel it good.

08:48 - 08:53
Like, it starts to kind of sit on edge, but it'll hold that edge.

08:53 - 08:58
And unless your head goes over the the gunnels, the side of the kayak, you're fine.

08:58 - 09:01
If you just keep your head above your belly button, you're golden.

09:02 - 09:05
Now I have seen somebody fall off, Zach from Outfitters.

09:07 - 09:12
You know, if you're not careful, and you go to try and set the hook and there's nothing there,

09:12 - 09:20
well, you day be, kind of I I've seen them, yeah, throw his balance off and fall off the fishing pack. It does happen.

09:20 - 09:22
But, yeah, you just be careful.

09:22 - 09:27
Just for the record, I'm totally leaving that part in. Sorry, Zach.

09:27 - 09:33
And has that footage. Maybe he can get it to you and you can include it in your final video edit. He's never used it?

09:33 - 09:34
It can be swell. Yeah.

09:35 - 09:36
Yeah.

09:38 - 09:42
Oh, cool. Yeah. I I personally have never fished.

09:42 - 09:47
I've I think I've been in a kayak once, and I've never fished from one. I fished from canoes.

09:47 - 09:49
It's all fine and dandy.

09:49 - 09:56
Although, that said, I've got a 14 foot that's it's I guess it's packed boat style.

09:56 - 09:59
Like, I'm sitting in the bottom of it.

10:00 - 10:03
Just just paddling it terrifies me that I'm going over.

10:03 - 10:06
So I can't I would never even think about

10:06 - 10:07
I've paddled

10:07 - 10:07
one of

10:07 - 10:08
those boats. Not eh? this.

10:08 - 10:12
Super nice. I've paddled one of those key waitings, the solo boats.

10:13 - 10:15
Ben, you remember the trip we did with Justin?

10:15 - 10:17
I was paddling that solo boat. It was a red

10:18 - 10:19
Yeah. That was our first Yeah.

10:19 - 10:21
First trip Eh? nice little boats.

10:21 - 10:23
I really like those solo boats. It's super cool.

10:23 - 10:28
Like, you have the same portability that you day, I guess independence that you would in a fishing

10:28 - 10:32
kayak, but all the space that you have in a canoe. Right?

10:32 - 10:36
Yeah. I remember you mentioning how how you had to get used to it, though.

10:36 - 10:38
When we first got in that that canoe, I remember you saying it's

10:38 - 10:43
Well, yes. Because of the hull, it's, it's not as stable as what I was used to.

10:43 - 10:47
Like, my my fishing canoe up until just recently, and maybe we can talk about that a little

10:48 - 10:55
bit, but my fishing canoe is this big, old Canadian tire eh? plastic boat, which I can comfortably

10:55 - 10:58
stand in because it's so wide and the bottom's so flat.

10:59 - 11:04
So I was very comfortable in the nice stable canoe, but that keywayed in was the first time

11:04 - 11:10
that I was kind of paddling a real boat kind of by myself, a real canoe anyways.

11:10 - 11:13
And, yeah, it took a little while, but, it got super comfortable.

11:14 - 11:17
You know, we were on an Algonquin trip, so there wasn't much choice.

11:17 - 11:19
It was like, this is what we're doing.

11:19 - 11:22
So I got I got okay with it after a little while.

11:23 - 11:29
Yeah. Same same here. I I think the very first time I tried to get into it, I went over.

11:29 - 11:36
And then and then there was at least one other really close call eh?, like, I think I just just reached out.

11:36 - 11:39
You know, not not used to that kinda tumble home. Right? Like, I'm eh?

11:39 - 11:41
I'm going a little farther out.

11:41 - 11:43
And I was like, oh, trap.

11:43 - 11:45
I'm oh, That was close to being wet again.

11:45 - 11:47
Tim, you said you fished out of a kayak before?

11:47 - 11:49
That's good. No. Oh, you haven't?

11:49 - 11:50
What about you, Pamela?

11:50 - 11:51
Eh? in one before.

11:51 - 11:52
Okay.

11:52 - 11:56
I've fished out of a like, we've got a oh, what is it?

11:56 - 11:59
Suri River Eh? 17 footer.

11:59 - 12:02
It's got and you you just mentioned your the flat bottom.

12:02 - 12:04
It's eh?, very flat on the bottom.

12:04 - 12:05
It's stable as I'll get out.

12:05 - 12:11
Like, you could you know, you you can party in that thing, and and it's not it's not going over. It's doesn't matter.

12:11 - 12:13
Ballast ballast made a big difference.

12:13 - 12:16
So I filled up, you know, the the what are they called?

12:16 - 12:20
The float boxes at either end of that. I filled them up

12:20 - 12:20
with water.

12:20 - 12:22
That totally changed how it how it beat.

12:22 - 12:23
Oh, you can do that?

12:23 - 12:23
Made it

12:24 - 12:27
well, I'm sure you're not supposed to, but I didn't. It's it's mine.

12:27 - 12:30
I can do whatever I want. Yeah.

12:30 - 12:31
Somebody eh? tell me what to do.

12:31 - 12:35
I didn't have any ballast with me then, but it added enough ballast that it it did. It made it be

12:36 - 12:36
That's interesting.

12:37 - 12:38
Far more comfortable with the paddling.

12:38 - 12:43
I'm sure over time, it'll be fine, but it was I'm used to big stable beasts.

12:44 - 12:46
Quick little tip with that, Tim.

12:46 - 12:49
Something that I've learned from a friend of ours over the year.

12:49 - 12:55
If you use, like, a 20 liter dry bag, fill it up with water, and just have it sitting in the

12:55 - 13:00
bow of the canoe, like, hooked around the the grab handle, that will put enough weight in the

13:00 - 13:04
front of the boat that it can help with stability, especially in, like, windy conditions.

13:05 - 13:09
I do that often when I'm fishing solo out of my big canoe. Yeah. Cool. Day.

13:10 - 13:19
Thank you. That's great. So just to double back a little bit, so what's the other than trying

13:19 - 13:26
to half the workload and not publish double the the material, what what else what do you what's

13:26 - 13:28
the ultimate sort of goal of Paddleheads?

13:28 - 13:32
What are you trying to do with your brand? I

13:32 - 13:37
think encourage people to get out and and and fish and explore more areas.

13:37 - 13:43
It's kind of, I mean, the same as a lot of these YouTubers is basically to try and inspire people.

13:43 - 13:48
To get out there, give it a shot, and to share stories of our trips and hope that, you know,

13:48 - 13:50
people can learn from those stories.

13:51 - 13:56
Yeah, I think our goal is mostly just to inspire and educate when we can.

13:56 - 14:01
We see a lot of people going tripping in the backcountry and there's not a lot of fishing rods going with people.

14:01 - 14:06
We can understand that it seems like it's a pain to bring a fishing rod and all of the tackle

14:06 - 14:11
that you need, but when you can dial it in and figure it out, it really adds to a trip.

14:11 - 14:15
And it can make for some amazing memories.

14:15 - 14:21
There's there's something very rewarding about fishing when you get into it. Yeah.

14:21 - 14:21
I would day

14:21 - 14:22
I don't know. What what would

14:22 - 14:27
you say? A lot of a lot of, like, content creators or YouTubers in this, like, fishing, camping,

14:27 - 14:36
paddling space, I know this is the case, for us or for myself and probably Ben too.

14:36 - 14:40
But I think it comes from a place of inspiration.

14:40 - 14:43
Like we were inspired by somebody to do this thing.

14:45 - 14:50
Almost feels like this obligation, like, because you can you want to share that with other people

14:50 - 14:54
that might not have those opportunities or that person in their life to inspire them.

14:55 - 15:04
Because like Ben said, like, the camping and the paddling, like that alone is or can be such a life altering experience.

15:05 - 15:10
But like for us, there's something about fishing, especially like you have a goal.

15:10 - 15:12
Like I said, you've got a fish in mind.

15:12 - 15:16
Like you're imagining it Before you go out for the trip, like I can see eh?, I'm holding this fish.

15:17 - 15:18
I cannot wait for that moment.

15:19 - 15:26
And all of the, what is Eh?, misadventures that happens between starting the trip and getting

15:26 - 15:32
to that point just makes that whole experience eh? you finally get to, like, hold that fish so much more rewarding.

15:32 - 15:38
And so there's something special about fishing, in my opinion, that just really adds to these

15:38 - 15:42
trips that are, like, so awesome by themselves anyways.

15:42 - 15:48
But, so, yeah, you know, we we were inspired, and we we want to give other people that same

15:48 - 15:49
that same feeling, that same opportunity.

15:50 - 15:54
Yeah. We see also on this flip side, we see a lot of anglers that don't enjoy camping or they

15:54 - 15:55
don't take advantage of camping.

15:55 - 16:01
And they, you know, we just we we hope to open their eyes to to this side of things too.

16:01 - 16:06
That you can get way better fishing if you just go a couple portages in and you can make some

16:06 - 16:09
amazing memories doing these trips trying to get these fish.

16:09 - 16:14
Eh?, and so speaking of which, without giving away your favorite lakes, at least not while we're

16:14 - 16:18
recording, but afterwards, where do you guys like to fish?

16:18 - 16:21
Do do you have any sort of, like, you know, Kawartha Highlands?

16:21 - 16:24
Or you do you have some some crown land in Eh? Ontario?

16:24 - 16:30
So or or do you like to fish all the things so that you can do musky, you can do bass, you can do whatever?

16:31 - 16:34
We have a couple places that we we focus for sure.

16:34 - 16:36
We have our patterns, you could day.

16:37 - 16:43
But we we do enjoy exploring new eh?, especially when we hear about certain species of fish

16:43 - 16:46
or the type of fishing that we could experience.

16:47 - 16:50
And sometimes we just we kind of we ask people.

16:50 - 16:52
Like we'll get suggestions from Kevin Callan.

16:52 - 16:56
We'll email him and ask him for some tips on where we should go.

16:57 - 17:00
Yeah. Ben is kind of out in the Kingston eh?.

17:01 - 17:03
So he spends a lot of time fishing those areas.

17:03 - 17:08
I live in the Kawartha Lakes region, so I spend a lot of time there fishing.

17:08 - 17:14
And, yeah, over the years, we've we've found our spots that we go back to, for one reason or another.

17:15 - 17:17
Usually it's because fishing is good.

17:17 - 17:20
But, for sure, we like to explore and try new places as well.

17:20 - 17:26
And that's part of the fun of it, right, is when you're going somewhere new and you have these

17:26 - 17:29
expectations of kind of what you're looking from for it.

17:29 - 17:31
Either it happens or it doesn't.

17:32 - 17:34
And either way, you know, there's a lot to gain from that.

17:35 - 17:37
But, yeah, we've good some lakes.

17:37 - 17:39
It's gonna cost you a lot, Tim.

17:39 - 17:44
Not it's nothing personal, but maybe we can chat later about spots.

17:44 - 17:47
We're thinking of setting up, like, a big pot.

17:47 - 17:50
And if we can get enough money, we just want lots of money.

17:50 - 17:54
We'll tell everybody all the secret spots, but we'll have to be millionaires first. Right, Ben?

17:55 - 17:55
Yes.

17:55 - 18:00
Eh? was a conversation we had. Yep. Not.

18:01 - 18:04
So Ben mentioned muskie as being one of his favorite fish.

18:04 - 18:06
Adam Adam, do you have one?

18:07 - 18:16
Favorite fish? I feel like I want to say bass just because I've had so much fun bass fishing

18:17 - 18:23
and it's the fish that most people cut their teeth on, so to speak.

18:23 - 18:31
But I've been fortunate to have some really awesome experiences, not only by eh?, but with my kids.

18:31 - 18:37
And so I would say bass probably will always hold a very special place in my heart just because

18:37 - 18:41
it's so fun, and it's it's way more accessible than something like muskie.

18:41 - 18:44
You can go bass fishing for, you know, $15.

18:44 - 18:49
Now that's that's Kevin, Callan and and Speedo Man's opinion.

18:49 - 18:52
It might cost a few more dollars if you ask us, but not much.

18:52 - 18:54
You really don't need much to get out there and catch bass.

18:54 - 18:56
So, yeah, I love bass fishing.

18:57 - 19:01
Oh, kids. So what you obviously, you too.

19:01 - 19:06
Any we we'll we'll let everybody know about all your channels towards the end.

19:06 - 19:13
YouTube fish together a lot, but do you take your families and and do camping or fishing or,

19:13 - 19:16
you know, that that kind of outdoor adventure stuff?

19:17 - 19:19
Yeah. I do for sure.

19:20 - 19:23
I don't so I've just got this weird personal thing.

19:23 - 19:27
I don't put my kids in any of our videos.

19:28 - 19:32
My opinion on that is I'm leaving it up to them until they're old enough to decide whether or

19:32 - 19:35
not they want to be on the Eh? permanently forever.

19:36 - 19:41
But that doesn't stop me from taking them and I just don't record those trips.

19:41 - 19:47
Just this year, actually, this summer, I try to get at least once or twice, with them every year.

19:47 - 19:48
We day, like, a backcountry trip.

19:49 - 19:51
And, this year was super fun.

19:52 - 19:54
I took them my wife sat this one out.

19:54 - 20:01
It was just the kids and I, but I took them to kinda my, my favorite spot, which is this really

20:01 - 20:06
cool big island campsite on this, like, beautiful lake. There's nobody ever there.

20:06 - 20:09
And so the kids and I did a bunch of bass fishing.

20:10 - 20:16
Actually, the day we were packing up, they're walking around the campsite and they're like, Oh, we're bored, day. What should we do?

20:16 - 20:23
I'm like, Go get your fishing rods and go fishing. And they're good anglers. They're only seven.

20:23 - 20:26
They're still little, but I take them fishing a lot.

20:26 - 20:30
I live very close to a lake, and so they're rock bass experts.

20:31 - 20:34
So I just said, Take your fishing rods and go fishing.

20:34 - 20:36
So I'm packing up the campsite.

20:36 - 20:38
And fortunately, we're on the island.

20:38 - 20:39
I know they can't go far.

20:39 - 20:45
And I'm putting the tent away and I hear, it's a big one. It's a big one. So I drop everything.

20:45 - 20:46
I'm running across the island.

20:46 - 20:51
I get there and my daughter, she's like holding up, day, I got one.

20:53 - 20:58
So that that kind of stuff for me is like so special. I absolutely love that.

20:58 - 21:03
It's like why I started doing this and the fact that like I get to enjoy those experiences with my kids now.

21:03 - 21:06
I've had my wife out a few times as well.

21:06 - 21:11
She's a little less enthusiastic, and it's primarily based on her experiences.

21:12 - 21:14
And we'll eh? to that later, actually.

21:14 - 21:15
I'd love to tell a story about that.

21:15 - 21:22
But, possible, I mean, in between work and just regular family life and then the channel and

21:22 - 21:25
all those other things, it's hard to, like, get all of that in.

21:25 - 21:29
But I I make an effort at least once or twice a year to get the family out camping.

21:30 - 21:31
Sweet. How about you, Ben?

21:33 - 21:35
Eh?, I don't have a little family of my own.

21:35 - 21:39
But, I've been trying to convince my mom to get out camping with me.

21:39 - 21:43
I think I might be able to get her out on a trip without any portages. Yeah.

21:43 - 21:46
And I just recently started, taking my girlfriend out.

21:46 - 21:49
She is, she's from Brazil.

21:49 - 21:51
She came to Canada just last year.

21:51 - 21:57
So I've been, showing her as much of the camping as I can and trying to convince her into winter

21:57 - 21:59
camping, but she keeps calling that a scam.

21:59 - 22:01
So I don't think that'll happen.

22:02 - 22:07
But I got to take her to Algonquin this year, and she was an absolute champ in the canoe.

22:08 - 22:13
I've had her in the canoe a couple times before, and she picked it up really quick.

22:13 - 22:16
And she kept asking me, like, teach me more. Show me more.

22:16 - 22:19
So I'm teaching you how to do draws and crossbow draws.

22:19 - 22:22
And and, eventually, like, we'd be fishing together.

22:22 - 22:25
She's like, I just wanna paddle. And I'm like, okay.

22:25 - 22:28
She's like, let me paddle you around the lake. I'm like, okay.

22:28 - 22:29
I wanna go fishing over there.

22:29 - 22:34
And she's paddling from the front of the canoe and getting me over there. No problem.

22:35 - 22:37
So, yeah, it's been a lot of fun getting her out.

22:37 - 22:41
She's been really good in the canoe and on the portage trails and with camping. So

22:42 - 22:47
Matt, can you explain the, the why, she thinks it's a scam to winter camping?

22:50 - 22:52
She just it's too cold for her. You know?

22:52 - 22:55
She's she's from Brazil, so she's she's like yeah.

22:55 - 22:58
Like, nice temperature to her is, like, 35 degrees Celsius.

22:58 - 23:04
I remember you saying So she she didn't believe that anyone could be comfortable doing that.

23:05 - 23:07
Yeah. She she doesn't believe it.

23:07 - 23:08
I think that's hilarious. I

23:09 - 23:15
when I take we took her out to, Algonquin, I had her in a minus 18, sleeping bag.

23:16 - 23:21
And she was still, she she she had layers on underneath the sleeping bag too.

23:21 - 23:23
And this was not winter camp. Right?

23:23 - 23:26
This was not. No. This was August. Oh my goodness.

23:29 - 23:30
Yeah.

23:30 - 23:32
It's not for everybody. That's for sure.

23:32 - 23:37
Well, I like, I couldn't go I couldn't do Brazil because I I'm I don't know.

23:37 - 23:43
I run it about I'm I'm a little run a little hotter than most people. I would just melt.

23:43 - 23:46
Like, I'm you know, it's Eh? Yeah.

23:46 - 23:48
Not not for this guy.

23:48 - 23:52
Adam, tell us tell us your story about your your wife and and camping.

23:53 - 23:54
Oh, so

23:54 - 23:55
You like stories.

23:56 - 24:00
Yeah. The first time I took her out backcountry camping was in Algonquin.

24:01 - 24:05
This was probably 2018, I want to say.

24:06 - 24:10
And I didn't have much experience fishing or backcountry camping really.

24:10 - 24:14
Like, I'd been out, like, a dozen times, and she agreed to come.

24:15 - 24:17
So we learned a couple things that first weekend.

24:17 - 24:21
One is both of us have a sensitivity to DEET.

24:22 - 24:24
So we learned that the hard day.

24:24 - 24:26
And I'll say I'll just say this.

24:26 - 24:32
We learned that I don't know if you're familiar with what that means, but for us, if we use

24:32 - 24:36
DEET, even like a small amount, we both experience, like, nausea.

24:38 - 24:43
Nausea, but on the other side of your body, I'm not sure how to exactly describe that.

24:44 - 24:45
But

24:45 - 24:46
so all at the same time.

24:46 - 24:52
And so this happened to both of us in the middle of the night, we woke up and it's in the middle

24:52 - 24:56
of this torrential downpour and thunderstorm.

24:57 - 25:04
So it's like the worst conditions, and both of us are like, oh, we gotta go now. So we're laughing.

25:04 - 25:09
We're out just in the storm in the middle of the night laughing, like everything coming out of everywhere.

25:09 - 25:11
It was like that was her first experience.

25:14 - 25:17
Somehow I convinced her to come out with Ben and I, actually.

25:17 - 25:23
This was only like the second time Ben and I had done like a a a paddle trip together.

25:23 - 25:25
And so I dragged her along with us.

25:25 - 25:29
She came willingly, but we were on an island site.

25:30 - 25:35
And we knew there was a storm coming on the Saturday, so we kind of set up some tarps.

25:36 - 25:37
We were preparing for rain.

25:38 - 25:40
And so, I don't know, we were kind of hanging out.

25:40 - 25:47
It was an easygoing day and we kind of saw the storm coming, but from across the lake, which was really cool.

25:48 - 25:51
We could see I don't know if you've ever seen that, but there's like a wall of rain.

25:51 - 25:53
You can see the clouds rolling across the lake.

25:54 - 25:59
And as the storm got closer, the wind started eh? pretty gusty.

25:59 - 26:02
So, day, this is going to be like a wind rainstorm.

26:03 - 26:06
And then the lightning and thunder started cracking.

26:07 - 26:08
The wind started picking up.

26:08 - 26:15
And at this point, all the tarps we had set up to protect ourselves from the rain are just flapping

26:15 - 26:17
around, not attached to anything anymore.

26:18 - 26:25
And the rain was coming down so hard that it created this flash flood in our campsite.

26:25 - 26:30
So now we've got this little river going underneath the tent that my wife and I are sleeping

26:30 - 26:31
in with all of our dry stuff.

26:32 - 26:37
The wind is so strong that I'm holding onto the tarp that's over top of the hammock that Ben's

26:37 - 26:42
sleeping in, just trying to keep the tarp over the hammock eh? all of his stuff's in there.

26:43 - 26:49
And the wind became so eh?, all of us were very uneasy.

26:50 - 26:51
This feels like a tarp.

26:51 - 26:53
We're scrambling. And of course,

26:54 - 26:58
my wife's freaking out. I'm holding onto the tarp and Ben's filming. He's got the camera.

27:00 - 27:05
And at one point it got so intense that my wife, she just yelled, Are we gonna die?

27:06 - 27:08
And I'm like, grab a tree.

27:08 - 27:13
Which of course, like in a thunderstorm is probably not good advice.

27:13 - 27:16
But in that moment, the wind seemed like the bigger threat.

27:17 - 27:19
And so I don't know.

27:19 - 27:21
After that, it was kind of a blur.

27:21 - 27:25
The whole storm passed over, everything cleared up.

27:25 - 27:30
And just the site was a disaster. It tore everything apart.

27:30 - 27:33
And like I said, my tent, fortunately, it's a good tent.

27:34 - 27:36
It was sitting in this huge puddle.

27:36 - 27:38
We picked it up and moved it.

27:38 - 27:40
Fortunately, everything inside was day.

27:40 - 27:42
Thank with Ben as well.

27:43 - 27:48
And, yeah, it was a good reminder of the power of mother nature and the fact that she doesn't

27:48 - 27:51
care about you or your stuff.

27:52 - 27:54
And we learned that actually on our paddle out.

27:54 - 28:00
As we were leaving the next day, we saw this, like, group of boats.

28:00 - 28:05
So there were cottages on this lake, and there was a group of boats kinda sitting at this, in front of this cottage.

28:05 - 28:09
And as we approached it, we realized the entire cottage had burnt down.

28:09 - 28:14
So we assume that maybe, it was hit by lightning or something like that. We're not sure.

28:14 - 28:18
Fortunately, it didn't seem to affect the forest around it.

28:18 - 28:21
But, yeah, it was just like, wow.

28:21 - 28:23
We got out of that pretty okay.

28:25 - 28:29
When we were in the middle of it and the wind picked up, it it had gone from almost, like, zero

28:29 - 28:35
to a hundred so fast that I legit thought that we had, like, a mini tornado drop on top.

28:35 - 28:37
It was it was so strong.

28:37 - 28:41
And you can see in the video footage, the trees are just going side to side.

28:42 - 28:44
And, yeah, mother nature didn't let up after the storm.

28:45 - 28:46
I guess you forgot about this, Adam.

28:46 - 28:49
The bugs were horrendous afterwards.

28:50 - 28:55
There weren't that many bugs before the storm, and afterwards, they were so bad.

28:55 - 28:57
Well, probably like us, they were just glad to still be alive.

28:57 - 28:59
So they're like, we better eat. Yeah.

28:59 - 29:02
So they all came out and they were feeding. Yeah.

29:02 - 29:03
Well, you can't use DEET, Adam.

29:03 - 29:05
So what do you do in that situation?

29:07 - 29:12
Over the years, I've gotten away from using the insect sprays and the lotions.

29:12 - 29:17
I just use, like, bug jackets now. And, same with shirts.

29:17 - 29:18
Like, I don't like wearing sunscreen.

29:18 - 29:20
I'm I'm not like, I don't know.

29:20 - 29:23
I wanna say a weirdo, but that might offend somebody.

29:23 - 29:28
But, like, I just don't like all the oil and the grease all over my my skin and stuff.

29:28 - 29:32
And so, like, these kinds of UV shirts, I love eh?, but they're good.

29:32 - 29:33
They help keep the bugs off.

29:33 - 29:35
They help keep the sun and stuff like that off.

29:35 - 29:36
So that's kinda what I do now.

29:37 - 29:41
I've I've been thinking noodling about the, the inspiring people to get out there.

29:41 - 29:47
So so if you were to say, here's here's a here's a nice little kit to put together eh? to go

29:47 - 29:49
out or or or I don't know.

29:49 - 29:54
Like, I know that Ontario Parks does does a learn to fish program where they lend you a a rod

29:54 - 29:56
and a a hook and a bobber and whatever.

29:57 - 30:02
What would you say what would you recommend for somebody to to put together to get themselves out there?

30:03 - 30:06
Well, we can't speak to the whole the the eh? rod thing.

30:06 - 30:08
We've never we've never done that.

30:08 - 30:14
But for a fishing rod, if you're actually considering fishing and you think you're gonna be

30:14 - 30:20
doing it for a while and you don't wanna buy five fishing rods, we we recommend Ugly Sticks.

30:20 - 30:25
There's a certain brand and not sponsored. They're called Ugly Sticks.

30:25 - 30:28
They're marketed as being one of the toughest rods.

30:29 - 30:33
And I personally have never broken, an ugly stick, and we take them on all of our trips.

30:34 - 30:39
And we are not always super easy on our gear, and they really stand the test of time.

30:39 - 30:45
And as as for a reel, you know, you could probably find an ugly stick with a reel on it and

30:45 - 30:47
that will get you through enough seasons.

30:48 - 30:50
I wouldn't worry about upgrading the reel right away.

30:50 - 30:55
Do some research on YouTube though about learning about how to put fishing line on your fishing rod.

30:56 - 30:59
There's common mistakes that people make and it can lead to a disaster.

31:00 - 31:02
So I highly recommend that.

31:03 - 31:09
And, as far as fishing lures, like just grab yourself a couple of simple, easy fishing lures,

31:09 - 31:16
some of the classics, a spinnerbait, some spoons, you know, and just get out there and start trying.

31:16 - 31:18
Yeah. I would just add to that.

31:19 - 31:24
You know, if someone is not sure whether they are going to like fishing, it's something they

31:24 - 31:30
just are interested in trying, there are much less expensive combos.

31:30 - 31:37
So you get a rod and a reel with fishing line on it at you know, like Canadian Tire, something like that. They'll go on sale.

31:37 - 31:42
You can pick them up for $15.20, $40 sometimes for the whole thing.

31:43 - 31:46
You know, if you find a good sale, you can get them pretty inexpensively.

31:46 - 31:51
That's not going to do well in time.

31:51 - 31:55
The thing that usually fails first on those cheaper combos is the fishing line.

31:55 - 31:59
It just turns into a big tangled mess and you're like, well, this is useless now.

32:00 - 32:03
But it's certainly good enough to get you started.

32:03 - 32:10
And I mean, you could go as simple as just like any hook and a worm with a bobber or a little

32:11 - 32:15
split shot weight just above the hook on the line.

32:15 - 32:17
You just pinch it on. It's super simple.

32:17 - 32:19
Throw it out there with a bobber.

32:19 - 32:25
You will that's that's what there's a couple lures or baits that I would say will pretty much

32:25 - 32:27
guarantee fish if there are fish in the lake.

32:27 - 32:30
A worm is one of them. You just gotta wait.

32:30 - 32:38
But, yeah, with what Ben said, you can easily pick up a few pretty inexpensive lures, inline

32:38 - 32:41
spinners, spoons, that kind of thing.

32:41 - 32:47
But YouTube is a huge resource because, you know, some people some people have people in their

32:47 - 32:52
lives that fish and that can teach them those kinds of things. Many people don't. I didn't.

32:52 - 32:58
I learned how to do everything I know now from YouTube, and that's just the generation I grew up in.

32:58 - 32:59
But there's tons of resources out there.

32:59 - 33:06
So if you're not sure how to tire lure on or anything like that, all of that information is available on YouTube.

33:06 - 33:11
And pretty quickly you can you can be out on the water catching fish?

33:12 - 33:14
Yeah. Don't worry about the electronics when you first start out.

33:14 - 33:17
I wouldn't even worry about fish finders and all that stuff.

33:17 - 33:22
You know, fishing can get as complicated as you want it to be, but it can also be very simple.

33:22 - 33:26
So don't overcomplicate it and mostly just get out there and see if you enjoy it.

33:26 - 33:28
See if you have the patience for it.

33:29 - 33:33
And one thing that I wanna add just because the the common complaint I hear from people is,

33:33 - 33:35
well, I always get a bird's nest.

33:35 - 33:36
I always get a big tangle.

33:36 - 33:39
I get a big knot in my fishing line all the time.

33:39 - 33:42
For beginning fishing line, I would recommend braided fishing line.

33:42 - 33:44
It doesn't tangle as easily.

33:45 - 33:49
You if you've ever touched a fishing rod, you'll probably know that that a lot of the fishing

33:49 - 33:53
line, when you start pulling it off, it has a memory and it has this coil to it.

33:53 - 33:56
That's usually where your bird's nest, your knots are gonna come from.

33:56 - 33:58
And braided line doesn't do that.

33:58 - 34:00
It's much easier to tie knots.

34:00 - 34:02
So for beginners, start with braided line.

34:02 - 34:05
You'll have a much easier experience, much better experience.

34:06 - 34:11
Yeah. I'm not sure if you can buy combos with braided line on them.

34:11 - 34:14
Usually, when you buy a combo, it has monofilament on it.

34:14 - 34:22
So that might be a good, like, exercise for somebody to learn how to spool their own reel. It's not that hard.

34:22 - 34:23
It does have to be done properly.

34:24 - 34:28
I would just say on that though, if that's the type of thing you're going to do, make sure you're

34:28 - 34:30
not careless with the fishing line.

34:30 - 34:37
That's probably one of the biggest problems with anglers, and the biggest issue that we see

34:37 - 34:39
is just people leave fishing line around.

34:39 - 34:45
So if you're going to be pulling fishing line off of a reel, eh? way to dispose of it would

34:45 - 34:50
be to coil it up and wrap, like, a little bit of tape around it or something like that just to keep it bunched.

34:50 - 34:54
And I'm not like so I know there are some recycling programs in some areas.

34:54 - 34:57
I would suggest people look into that.

34:57 - 35:01
But, yeah, fishing line can be pretty dangerous for wildlife and that sort of thing.

35:01 - 35:09
So it's not the type of thing you wanna just be all willy nilly about, you know, to use a technical term.

35:10 - 35:14
Eh?, yeah. One, we we're big on sustainability and eco friendliness.

35:14 - 35:16
And so we do you guys have any tips around that?

35:17 - 35:25
In terms of eating like well, like, stuff like, catch and release versus eating all of your catch.

35:25 - 35:29
You know, are are there different like, I know, you know, when you get your when you've got

35:29 - 35:34
your license, for sake of arguments, conservation license, this type of fish, you're you have

35:34 - 35:43
a certain range of size or weight that is a keeper, isn't, but but and sometimes those ranges are pretty large.

35:43 - 35:46
What what would be you know, I don't I don't know.

35:46 - 35:47
Pull it out of your butt.

35:47 - 35:49
Pick a fish and say, you know,

35:50 - 35:51
Don't do that. That's gross.

35:51 - 35:53
Two pounds and up is good to keep. Right?

35:53 - 35:59
But by the time you hit four and a half pounds, that's an old lunker that's kicking around and

35:59 - 36:01
and has been producing other fish.

36:01 - 36:04
Let that guy keep keep doing that part of the job. You know?

36:04 - 36:05
You know you know what I mean?

36:05 - 36:12
Yeah. Yeah. Generally speaking, once you start learning your species of fish, you'll start to

36:12 - 36:14
realize, you know, what is a big fish?

36:14 - 36:19
Sometimes people don't realize that this sunfish that they caught is actually a massive sunfish,

36:19 - 36:24
or this bass they caught is actually probably a six year old bass.

36:24 - 36:29
So we would always say put away the biggest fish, we never keep the biggest fish.

36:29 - 36:34
They also generally contain the most heavy metals because they're consuming all of the smaller

36:34 - 36:38
fish and it just accumulates over time, also because of their age.

36:38 - 36:42
So we generally don't eat the biggest fish that we catch, we like to put them back because they're

36:42 - 36:46
also the breeders, they're eh? the ones that are going to keep providing fish for us to keep

36:46 - 36:48
enjoying for years to come.

36:48 - 36:53
And we generally just try not to take anything that we're not going to eat immediately.

36:53 - 36:57
We're not the kind of anglers that go out fishing to fill our freezers.

36:57 - 36:59
We kind of believe against that.

36:59 - 37:00
We don't think that's right.

37:00 - 37:04
I mean, there's nothing wrong with keeping a couple fish in your freezer, but we know some people

37:04 - 37:07
that or we've heard stories of people who go over the limit.

37:07 - 37:12
There's definitely you should definitely be a little bit conservative and just just catch what you're gonna eat.

37:12 - 37:15
Don't don't waste meat if you can. Yeah. I think the

37:15 - 37:16
most I

37:16 - 37:21
would also sorry. Just as far as, like, pollution and sustainability, people will go out and

37:21 - 37:26
get fishing line, and they think, oh, I'm not gonna catch a bass that's heavier than 10 pounds.

37:26 - 37:28
I only need 10 pound fishing line.

37:29 - 37:36
That's not really how you judge fishing line strength, and I always like to just go a lot heavier than I need to.

37:36 - 37:38
I never wanna break off on a fish.

37:38 - 37:43
I never wanna have a fish, lure stuck in a fish's mouth, So I always oversize my line.

37:44 - 37:49
I'm not really worried about them being picky about your fishing line and seeing your fishing line.

37:49 - 37:50
Most of them don't care.

37:51 - 37:57
Yeah. I was just gonna say, it is really important as far as sustainability goes to make sure

37:57 - 38:04
that you are aware and familiar with the regulations in the area that you're going to be fishing.

38:05 - 38:10
There are, what is it, 21 fishing management zones in Ontario.

38:10 - 38:14
And so depending on where you are, the rules can be very different about what kind of fish you

38:14 - 38:16
can keep, when you can fish for them.

38:17 - 38:22
And then some some places have slot sizes, so you can only keep certain fish within a certain size.

38:22 - 38:27
And so it's important to have tools like a measuring tape to make sure that you can check that.

38:27 - 38:35
But, like, yeah, I would say as long as you are acting within the law that the regulators have

38:35 - 38:40
set forth based on their science and their understanding of fish populations and the health

38:40 - 38:44
of an ecosystem because they will change that as time goes on.

38:44 - 38:48
If if something happens to a certain species and they need to protect that, they will ban fishing in that area.

38:48 - 38:53
So just understand the regulations very well, makes you understand the slot sizes and the size

38:53 - 38:54
of fish that you can keep.

38:54 - 39:01
And b, this is something that I'm still trying to understand, but I think I think it's called

39:01 - 39:06
a a possession limit, which means that just just because you you caught, you know, two fish

39:06 - 39:11
this day and two fish this day doesn't necessarily mean that you can have them all in your possession

39:11 - 39:12
at home at the same time.

39:12 - 39:14
I'm not an expert on that.

39:14 - 39:15
It's not like I said, I'm still learning.

39:16 - 39:21
But the basis of what I'm getting at here is understand the fishing eh?.

39:21 - 39:25
Read them, understand them in the zone that you're gonna be fishing, and that that will help

39:25 - 39:28
to protect the species as well because that's what those are there for.

39:28 - 39:30
And favorite way to prepare fish?

39:30 - 39:31
Like, do you grill it over the fire?

39:31 - 39:33
Do you pan fry it? Do you poach it?

39:33 - 39:34
Deep fried.

39:35 - 39:35
Deep fried.

39:37 - 39:41
It's the simplest and easiest way to get a good tasting, meal for sure.

39:41 - 39:47
But, baking fish can be so delicious with, like, a like, take a brook trout, drizzle it with

39:47 - 39:53
some some maple syrup, some salt, pepper, throw it in the oven. Yeah. Bake it up.

39:53 - 39:54
It's it can be very delicious.

39:55 - 40:02
Just out of curiosity, not not that I expect this, but did you guys, watch the trip we did most recently with Kevin? Okay.

40:02 - 40:03
I only bring it up

40:03 - 40:06
because No. I I saw your shorts about it. Okay.

40:06 - 40:12
And I, like, I will will watch it because put it in bust a gut and stuff, I'm sure, because that's how it

40:12 - 40:19
goes with you guys. I only ask because usually, in the past, we've done fishing competitions

40:19 - 40:23
with with Kevin and Ashley, which is super fun.

40:23 - 40:25
But this time, we did kind of like a bit of a cook off.

40:25 - 40:33
And for the meal that, Ben and I were doing, we were depending on catching walleye to make our meal.

40:33 - 40:42
And so, fortunately, between Kevin and Ashley and myself, not not Eh?, but, we we caught fish

40:42 - 40:43
to make to make the meal.

40:44 - 40:50
And so, I almost feel like I don't want to spoil it for you guys, but maybe I will just because it's worth sharing.

40:51 - 40:54
We made this I made this I say we a lot.

40:54 - 41:01
Like, I really do feel like Ben and I are like just a singularity. We're just one thing.

41:02 - 41:03
But obviously, that's just me.

41:03 - 41:06
So I'm gonna eh?, I cooked this meal.

41:06 - 41:09
We did come up with the idea eh?. And

41:10 - 41:11
Thank you.

41:12 - 41:13
So I prepared this meal.

41:13 - 41:20
We we deep fried, filleted fish, and then I made this, sauce.

41:20 - 41:24
It was maple bacon bourbon, like white gravy.

41:24 - 41:31
And and then we put the the battered fried fish fillet on a waffle and drizzle that sauce over top of it.

41:31 - 41:35
So it was like chicken and waffles, but we called it northern fried walleye walleye waffles.

41:36 - 41:38
And it was actually pretty good.

41:38 - 41:45
It There was obviously some limitations because we were cooking on a hot stove.

41:45 - 41:46
Hot eh? stove.

41:46 - 41:51
And, and, yeah, so it was a little challenging, but the meal itself was really good.

41:51 - 41:53
So that was an interesting way to to eat fish.

41:53 - 41:56
I've never eaten I've never even had chicken and waffles.

41:56 - 42:00
So to eat fish on it, was interesting, but it was good.

42:00 - 42:04
So, you know, something we we we plan on putting a recipe out eventually.

42:04 - 42:08
So if anyone's interested, it's worth trying.

42:08 - 42:08
Yeah.

42:08 - 42:10
The sauce sounds amazing.

42:10 - 42:12
Yeah. The waffle's a little weird. I don't I don't

42:12 - 42:13
eat the waffle.

42:16 - 42:17
Not for this guy.

42:17 - 42:18
That's it for us for today.
