Review of "World's Worst Time Machine"

Lucy

You're listening to the Daddy Daughter Bookworms sponsored by CareFresh Training Group, where we talk about choosing books. Hello, bookworms. My name is Lucy.

Alex

And I'm Alex, and today we're going to answer the question can you make a time machine work?

Lucy

That's right, we're reviewing World's Worst Time Machine. The author is by Dustin Brady and the publisher is Andrew McNeil. Publishing location is Kansas City.

Alex

This book is the first chapter book that we've reviewed, I believe, and I believe this is the first chapter book in the series. Was this also very different type of book for you to read, and how did you learn about the book?

Lucy

Yes, and I learned about the book because one of the librarians, Mrs Linus, suggested this book for me and encouraged me to come to a book club discussion.

Alex

So she told you about the book through book club, and that's when you decided to read it.

Lucy

Yep, and I would have never thought of that book on my own.

Alex

Really. So what kind of genre is it?

Lucy

It's a children's chapter book that has a lot of science fiction and adventure and a small amount of history fiction.

Alex

Well, that's awesome, and this is the first time we're doing science fiction and historical fiction, right? Uh-huh, that's awesome. So why don't you tell the listeners about the characters? What were the main characters or who were they?

Lucy

The main characters are Liam, a boy who wants to learn about Thomas Edison, and Elsa is a smart girl who likes to read books and learn to learn Instead of taking shortcuts, and Tommy twinkles, a boy from the past who wants to rob banks.

Alex

He wants to rob banks. That's pretty silly, huh.

Lucy

Banks.

Alex

Yeah.

Lucy

Because it was actually the library.

Alex

Oh my gosh. Well, we're going to get into that, but were there any other characters that you want to tell us about?

Lucy

Yes, the cats are spies Group is a bunch of crazy people who think cats are spies, and Mason a spoiled boy, but Tommy wants to be friends with him. And, yes, and the gangsters from the past, such as Creepy Carpets and Carpets and the Bucker Boy, who are actually real criminals.

Alex

Have you ever heard of gangsters before this?

Lucy

Yes.

Alex

Where did you hear about gangsters?

Lucy

I don't know. I just heard.

Alex

Well, didn't you have a school play?

Lucy

Yes.

Alex

And there was gangsters in them.

Lucy

Yes, I was one of the three princesses.

Alex

I know, but why is the time machine so bad at traveling in time?

Lucy

The scientists who invented it and Elsa know how to work it, but why is it so bad? We don't really know.

Alex

You don't know, but the scientists and Elsa made it and they're the only ones that know how it works.

Lucy

Yeah.

Alex

What else did you want to say?

Lucy

Nothing, nothing. It's going to get it away. It's going to get it away.

Alex

Okay. Are there times when it works properly?

Lucy

It works properly when you believe it will work.

Alex

So you have to have faith.

Lucy

Yeah.

Alex

And you have to really think it's going to work and then it should work. You're saying Uh-huh, okay, did you connect with any of the characters, or did you like any characters a lot?

Lucy

I'm mostly like Elsa, because I love to read and learn.

Alex

And that's what she does. Yeah, what kind of books does she like to read? Does she say no? So she loves to read? What else does she love to do?

Lucy

She loves to learn about things from the books.

Alex

Did any of the characters remind you of Wait? Let me do that again. Did any of the characters remind you of characters in other books?

Lucy

Yes, mason reminds me of Eloise because she always talks about being rich.

Alex

Really.

Lucy

Yes.

Alex

Okay, and what was the best part of the whole book?

Lucy

My favorite part was the very end. There's a big surprise ending.

Alex

And we do want to tell it because we want people to read the book, right.

Lucy

Yep, and I really hope there's a second book.

Alex

Alright, is there any? Is there a lot of conflict and exciting parts in the book that you want to tell us about?

Lucy

Liam, elsa and Tommy had a plan to trick the gangsters to get them out of Liam's house.

Alex

Okay, I want you to say that again, baby, but I want you to say no, but what I want you to say is Put the beginning part of the sentences. Do you understand what I mean?

Lucy

Pretty much.

Alex

So, was there any conflict as a part of the book? Well, yes, there was conflict between Liam, elsa and Tommy. Does that make sense, yes or no? Yes, alright, so let's try it again. Take two Was there a lot of conflict or exciting parts in the book that you want to tell us about?

Lucy

Well, yes, there was Liam. Elsa and Tommy had a plan to trick the gangsters to get out of them, to get them out of Liam's house.

Alex

Alright, and the question is did it work? Can you tell me?

Lucy

Yes, it did work.

Alex

Well, I don't want to give away the ending it wasn't the ending. Okay, so, but it did work right. Yep, okay. Was there any other types of conflict or exciting parts in the book?

Lucy

Well, to me, yes. So when they were sneaking into the catchers, well, when they were sneaking into the hotel to get the time-slime barrels, they tried to do. Well, it did work, but they were workers, they pretended to be workers to get the time-slime.

Alex

Okay, and you really like that part. Yeah, okay, would you change any part of the story?

Lucy

I wouldn't change anything, but I really hope they're the second book. It's a little hard to tell if the story is completely over or not. There is a number one on the book, so that's a good hint that there will be more books.

Alex

Okay, do me a favor, lucy, stop fiddling with all the wires, because I can hear that. Okay. So, lucy, would you recommend this book to anybody, and why?

Lucy

I would recommend this book because it has surprises.

Alex

You like those. It has a lot of surprises, or just a couple of surprises.

Lucy

It has a lot of surprises.

Alex

Okay. When your librarian suggested this to you, how did you feel in the beginning? Like, oh, I'll just read it, or I don't really want to read this because it's not really the things I read. Or how did you feel in the beginning?

Lucy

When I started to read the book I'm like, do I really want to read this book? But when I continued reading it I liked it a little bit more and then I loved it.

Alex

So does that mean that you should maybe expand what you're reading, because you never know what you might like or not like? Right?

Lucy

Yep.

Alex

Okay, and what kind of person would like this kind of book?

Lucy

People who like unpredictable stories.

Alex

And you like a good, unpredictable story.

Lucy

Yep.

Alex

When you looked at the cover, when she gave it to you, what did you think?

Lucy

I didn't know that it was going to be that much conflict, but I knew it was going to be an exciting story.

Alex

And out of one to ten, what would you give it? Ten? Ten Lucy's Up. Lucy, why don't you tell the listeners how you can get that book if they want to buy it, if they don't go to the library?

Lucy

They can go to their local children's bookstore or they can go to our show notes, where we have a lot. Also help us by giving the podcast a five-star review.
