Gohan, Maya and Temi join Pastor Jim for a scripture and true Bible story about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.
Hey let's go So what are we talking about this week, Master Jim? Well hey Roscoe This week we're talking about how to refuse to bow. Oh, like when the queen walks in? What? Or maybe you said choose to scout Roscoe. No, I didn't. Maybe you said confuse the cattle. Rosco, come on, man. I said refuse to bow. Like when Chadrach, Mishek, and Abendigo refused to bow before the golden statue the king had set up. Oh, I knew that. What? Yeah. I just like to see you get all worked up. All Ross.
SPEAKER_05We'll be right back, kids. Hey kids! Let's talk.
SPEAKER_00Well, hello everybody. This is Pastor Jim, and uh I am the kids' pastor at Parkway Fellowship in Richmond, Texas. And I'm here surrounded by a bunch of amazing young people and their parents. And so I'm gonna have them tell their name, what grade they're in, and let's see, what was the thing that I was gonna have you do? Talk about your favorite candy. Favorite candy. Oh man, that's this is a this is a a theme right next close to my heart. Candy. I just had some candy before you guys get it got here. I have some candy for you guys when your podcast is over.
SPEAKER_04And the statue of the MM over there.
SPEAKER_00The MM guy, he's over there too.
SPEAKER_04And the box of airheads.
SPEAKER_00Box of Airheads. And that is your your prize when you get done with the podcast today. So welcome to Hey Kids, Let's Talk. And I'm gonna have the kids introduce themselves and uh w tell me what grade you're in and what your favorite candy is. So who wants to go first? Who wants to go? Oh, Gohan. I saw your hand first. Gohan.
SPEAKER_04So my name is Gohan. I'm in fourth grade, and my favorite candy is Kit Kat.
SPEAKER_00Kit Kat. Uh so is that the one you snap?
SPEAKER_04It's like those rectangles that come in that come in like a group.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I I think that's the one you snap, isn't it? So do you like the left side or the right side better?
SPEAKER_04Uh that's a very tricky one.
SPEAKER_00That's a trick question. You you just like both sides. You just like the candy bar, yes. Okay. Well, nice to meet you, Gohan, and thanks for being here for the podcast. Who wants to go next? Maya! Go.
SPEAKER_02My name is Maya.
SPEAKER_00Okay, hold on a second. Let me get your microphone up a little bit a bit. Okay, go ahead.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02Hi, my name is Maya, and I'm 11 and I'm in fifth grade, and my favorite candy is Starburst.
SPEAKER_00Starburst, which which color? She just she just uh did her shoulders like I don't know. I was gonna say the I don't know flavor of Starburst, but I don't know what that is. Come on, you gotta have a favorite color. Which which flavor is it? Strawberry. Yeah, strawberry. Oh, that's my favorite too. Okay. Good good choice. And Temmie!
SPEAKER_03Hi, my name is Temmie. I'm in fifth grade, and my favorite candy is Sour Patch Kids. Oh.
SPEAKER_00Oh, what's your favorite color of Sour Patch Kids?
SPEAKER_03The red ones.
SPEAKER_00The red ones. Good choice. Those are good too. My wife, when she goes to the movies, she's always like, Can you get me some Sour Patch Kids? And I'll be like, uh yeah. And uh, so yeah. Well, it's very so nice to have you here for the podcast today. So today our scripture comes to us from the book of Romans, chapter 12, verse 2. Can everybody say Romans?
SPEAKER_06Romans?
SPEAKER_00Ooh, that was so good. 12.
SPEAKER_06Twelve Q. Two Romans. Romans.
SPEAKER_00Twelve?
SPEAKER_06Twelve.
SPEAKER_00Nice. So our scripture today says, do not be shaped by this world. Okay, so for do not, we're gonna put our thumb, our right thumb under our chin, and then we're gonna come out and we're gonna shake our head and do a thumbs up like, no, don't do that. Okay, so when we do that motion, what what words are we gonna say? Do not. Okay, that was awesome. Okay, so Romans 12, 2 from the beginning says, Do not don't forget to shake your head. Okay, do not. Okay, be shaped. Make like you're making a ball. Like you're making a ball with both hands. Shaping it, shaping it. Yes, clay. That was good. Making a sh okay, so when we do this, what what words are we gonna say say?
SPEAKER_01Be shaped.
SPEAKER_00Be shaped, that's right. Okay, so Romans 12, 2, from the beginning says Do not be shaped. By this world. So we're gonna have both hands with W's, and then we're gonna go around and around and around and around and around and around and around. Yes, in circular motion. Okay, so that me those two those three words are by this world. Okay, so from the beginning, Romans 12, 2 says, Do not be not be shaped by this world. Oh, that's so good. So what do you think that means? Do not be shaped by this world. Yes, go on.
SPEAKER_04I think it means that like you should not follow the devil.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And and you should not be made in into the and you should not be made by the world, but be created by God.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's so good. That's a perfect answer. Do not be shaped by this world means that you follow God because the world doesn't really see God the way we see him, as as Christians, as people who believe in God. So they they kind of go on their own way, don't they? To way too much. So, one more time, what does Romans 12 2 say? Do not be shaped by this world. Oh, so good. Okay, now it's time for our Bible story. Oh, I love that one. I gotta do that one again. Okay, so go to page two on your scripts, and we are gonna start. So I'm gonna be the narrator, and Gohan is gonna be King Nebi. Do you see that, Gohan? Yes, I think. You got it? Okay. Uh it's page, so you do page two, and then you're gonna go to page three that's on your thing right there. And then let's see, uh, Maya is gonna be Shad Meshnego, because we're gonna combine all those three guys Shadrach, Meshach, and we're gonna combine all their names to be one person. And then Temi, you are the soldiers. Okay? So you got everybody got it. Okay. Oh, I gotta do it. In the Bible, book of Daniel, chapter three, everybody say Daniel.
SPEAKER_04Daniel!
SPEAKER_00Chapter three!
SPEAKER_04Chapter three!
SPEAKER_00We read a two-story about some godly men named Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. We're going to combine their names to make one name, and that name is Shad Meshnego, and that is played by Maya.
SPEAKER_02How's it going?
SPEAKER_00The king of Babylon was named King Nebuchadnezzar, but we're gonna call him King Nebi.
SPEAKER_04I am a king, and don't you forget it!
SPEAKER_00Nice. Chapter 3 starts with King Nebi having something built.
SPEAKER_04If you build it, they will come and bow down and worship that statue, or else.
SPEAKER_00Oh man, sounds like some drama there. Yes, the king demanded that everyone who is a leader come and bow down and worship the huge golden statue. And if they did not, they would be thrown into a blazing furnace.
SPEAKER_04Do it!
SPEAKER_00So the music played. And almost everyone bowed down. Wait, what did you say?
SPEAKER_04Almost everyone?
SPEAKER_00Everyone except Sad Shad Meshnigo.
SPEAKER_02Nope, can't do that.
SPEAKER_00So King Nebi was furious!
SPEAKER_04Make that furnace seven times hotter!
SPEAKER_00So that's what the soldiers did. The king's attitude changed towards Shad Meshnigo. The soldiers said, Hey boss, are you sure?
SPEAKER_01Seven times hotter seems a bit much.
SPEAKER_04Uh, excuse me? Do you wanna go in there too?
SPEAKER_01Uh seven times hotter it is.
SPEAKER_00Then Shad Meshnigo had something to say to the king.
SPEAKER_02Hey king, we do not have to defend ourselves in this. If you do this, God will deliver us. But even if he does not, we want to know we will never save your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.
SPEAKER_00Oh, so the soldiers tied up, Shadrag, Meshach, and Abednego opened the door to the furnace, but and threw them in. But the soldiers who threw them in, well, uh they died. But when the king looked in the furnace, page four.
SPEAKER_04I thought we threw three guys in there, and they're not bound up anymore. I see four guys in there just walking around.
SPEAKER_00Oh man. So the king's attitude changed once again.
SPEAKER_04He said, Hey guys, come on out.
SPEAKER_00So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of that furnace. There was no fire smell, no scorched clothes, and no scorched anything on them.
SPEAKER_04The king said, Praise be to the god of Shad Meshnego, who sent his angel and rescued his servants. They trusted in him. They didn't bow to the god I had set up. They would rather have died than worshipped any god but their own.
SPEAKER_00Those men were not shaped by this world. They did not bow to peer pressure or let the world tell them what to do. The end.
unknownWoohoo!
SPEAKER_00You guys were awesome. Oh my god. So good, so good. I love it. Good job. Good job, guys. So, uh, okay, so let's talk about the favorite part of the story. What do you what's your favorite part, Gohan?
SPEAKER_04Well, I have two favorites of the story.
SPEAKER_00Okay, go ahead.
SPEAKER_04I liked it when Shad Meshnigo was saved and any of the dun dun dun keep playing.
SPEAKER_00Sure. Yes. And what was your other favorite part?
SPEAKER_04Um, I those are the only two.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. So when when Shad Mish Shad Meshnigo said, I'm not gonna do it, and then when the dun dun dun sound. Okay.
SPEAKER_04I like it. Like I like it when you play it.
SPEAKER_00You can't see him because this is uh this is audio only, but his his whole face shakes a little bit when that sound. Let me see. Good job, Gohan. Okay, who else wants to say your favorite part? Okay, Temi.
SPEAKER_03My favorite part of the story was when the soldiers screamed.
SPEAKER_00When the soldiers screamed, yes, because they had died. Died. Aww. Can you imagine? Seven times hotter than normal. That must have been crazy hot. Oh yeah, like immediately. As soon as the door opened, they just passed. And uh that's that's pretty hot. That's pretty hot. Okay, so Maya, what's your favorite part?
SPEAKER_02My favorite part is when the king.
SPEAKER_00Can you get this a little closer to you? Yeah, okay, good.
SPEAKER_02My favorite part was like when the king thought that he had through three three of them in there.
SPEAKER_00I know there's so many people that think the fourth person was Jesus. I happen to think it probably was. They thought they had never seen like this glowing person because the the king looked in there and saw four people walking around. They weren't being burned, they weren't bound up anymore, and and they were just walking around like this is fun. Like they were on vacation. So that's a good that's a good part of the story. Okay, so does anybody have a story about peer pressure? I I have oh, who said it? Oh, Tammy, go ahead.
SPEAKER_03So sometimes my friends at school they ask me if I can buy something for them, but when I tell them no, they're always like, please, please, but and I feel bad to say no, so I end up saying yes, but then I end up not buying it for them because when I ask my parents they say no.
SPEAKER_00Yes, that is peer pressure. Yes, that is a good good story about peer pressure. Yes, go on.
SPEAKER_04Yesterday I got this library book, like like it had a picture like it was who would win series, like five books in one. And there's one that had Rhino versus Hippo, and one of the pages was like where they showed the rear ends of them. My sister wanted to show me it. Like she begged me a whole lot of times, and I s and I said no, but and I eventually did it.
SPEAKER_00So that was kind of like peer pressure giving into your sister. Yes. Doing something you really didn't want to do, but you but you ended up doing it anyway. Okay. I got I got a story. So Maya, you have a story of peer pressure? Go ahead.
SPEAKER_02I tell my brother.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. You're telling on your brother. That's okay. That's okay. We we we'll we won't say anything to him when you see him. Go ahead. Okay.
SPEAKER_02So he was doing something he wasn't supposed to, that my mom told him not to do. But he did it anyway, so I was like, I'm gonna go tell mom on you. And then he said, You better not snitch on me.
SPEAKER_00Oh. He was trying to get you not to tell him. Uh he did the wrong thing. You weren't doing the wrong thing. So, go on, you got another one?
SPEAKER_04Yes, well, it was it was last week's Wednesday.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, I was brushing my teeth, and my sister peeked out with a horse mask, and she was trying to distract me from brushing, but I but I said, please, I'm gonna tell the babysitter.
SPEAKER_00Oh that she was being silly, wasn't she?
SPEAKER_04She was being so distractive.
SPEAKER_00So I have a I have a story about peer pressure. So I was in my room one day, I was probably in elementary school, and there was a grocery store about a half mile away called Pangles. And it was summertime, and so we were all off school, and we I was I was uh in my room just playing with radios or something, something fun. And then my I hear my friends outside go, Jimmy, are you in there? And I was I went to the window and we we didn't have air conditioning, so all our windows were open. And I said, Yeah guys, what's up? And they were like, Hey, we're gonna go over to Pangles and steal some watermelons. You wanna come? And it was like, it was I I had an argument with myself, like if I say yes, I'm doing something wrong, maybe I could just stand over by the side and not really steal the watermelon, just stand there. But then I thought, no, that would be wrong too. And then I thought, but if I say no, then they're gonna think, oh, he just thinks he's better than us. And uh he's he's one of those religious guys, and and they would be mad at me and they wouldn't want to play anymore. And so I had this dilemma. And so I I thought myself, I talked to myself, and then I saw their faces, and I was like, no, I actually I don't want to do that. I want to come outside and play some basketball. And so they were like, Oh, okay, we'll be right back. And so they huddled up, and I can still remember they huddled like in a in a football huddle, and they were put their arms around each other, and I could hear them talking, but I couldn't hear what they were saying. And and I was like, Oh my gosh, they're gonna be so mad at me, and they're gonna think that I'm a square. And uh, and then they turned around, they turned around and said, Yeah, yeah, we're not gonna do that either. Let's go play some basketball. And I was like, Oh, that was that was peer pressure at its finest moment. Sometimes you can stand up to peer pressure and sometimes you just cave. So, Gio, do you got a story about peer pressure? I'll bring them up. I do. Okay, hear it. Let's hear it.
SPEAKER_08Yes. So when I was a kid, um like leaving fifth grade, going into sixth grade, so starting middle school. And um my sisters, uh older older sisters. I have all older sisters. One older brother, but you know. Anyway, they uh were like, Well, you're starting a new school, but we gotta make you look good. And they're like, We're gonna go, we're gonna get your hair cut, we're gonna go help pick out your clothes, and we're gonna make sure you look good. When I was in fifth grade, I didn't care about any of that things. I had long crazy hair, I I wore whatever fit and was clean. And um my sister's like, no, we're gonna get you some some fancy clothes. So I worked all summer um with my dad. He worked at a plant nursery, like digging out palm trees and like moving big pots of dirt, things like that, just manual labor out in the sun in Miami, so it was very hot. And I worked all summer and I saved up $700.
SPEAKER_05Whoa!
SPEAKER_08So uh we took a trip to visit some family who up north had a uh what we called a hookup for good clothes. And um so my sisters took my $700, and the first thing they went and bought was a pair of Jordans. And shoes. Yes, shoes. These were very expensive, like fancy shoes, apparently, that all the kids were wearing. And um I remember thinking, like, okay, I'll I'll get a pair. How much are they? And they're like, it's $150. Oh. You can hit that dun dun dun on that one. But yes. Um, so that was $150. Okay, well, I have to have these. And I I tried them on, they were the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I've ever worn.
SPEAKER_07Sad part. Oh no.
SPEAKER_08I had very sad. Yeah. And then they they took the rest of my money and they bought me um fancy Tommy Hill figure clothes, like jeans and and a t-shirt. It was like a $50 t-shirt or something like that. Oh my goodness. Just insane. And um, yeah, I remember wearing this stuff and not feeling comfortable, not feeling like myself. And I was just like, oh, I guess if I have to wear this to be cool and have people like me, I'll wear it. And then my sisters took me to a barber shop that uh one of her friends used to go to. I used to go to the one with my dad, and it was like a $4 haircut back then. And then uh the one that they took me to was $20. Whoa.
SPEAKER_00I was just like, I mean, your money is going fast.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, the money's gone at this point. And then uh so I get this haircut, and my sisters are pouring these gobs of hair gel in my hair. Like my hair was bulletproof, that's how hard my hair was.
SPEAKER_06Can it do the dung dung thing?
SPEAKER_08No, no, okay. Well, anyway. Um so yeah, I'm I'm staring in the mirror, I'm looking at it, I just I did not like so I went through all sixth grade uh dressing like this. Oh, one thing they made me buy was a jacket, a Tommy Hill figure jacket. Oh, yeah, I lived in Miami. Okay, there was a lot of things. There was no need for a jacket. So I'm there wearing very expensive clothes and very expensive shoes and very expensive jacket sweating. Sweating right through the pound of hair gel they gave me. And uh just feeling uncomfortable. And then at one point, halfway through my seventh grade year, I did it again. I let them like talk let them talk me into it. And uh they bought all my clothes again, bought me a new pair, I gave it all away halfway through seventh grade. I gave it to a friend of mine who really liked it. It did not fit him, but he didn't care. It was very expensive clothes, very expensive shoes, so he was like, I'll take it. And I remember telling my dad, hey, can you take me to the flea market? And he's like, Yeah, sure. So I went there and I bought like 10 shirts for $20. There you go. And like three pairs of jeans for maybe $15. And that's what I wore for the rest of my seventh and eighth grade year.
SPEAKER_00So bowing down to that peer pressure was uh very uncomfortable and sweaty. Yes. So oh it it happens, and can you can you imagine like the the favorite part of the story for me was when the everybody bowed down, but not Shadrach, Meshach, and Abendigo. Because can you imagine they're just like standing there looking around, like, what's going on? Everybody's bowing, and and and but then everybody sees them not bowing, and they're like, Oh, you're gonna be in trouble. Yeah, you're gonna be so they didn't bow down, and sometimes it's hard not to bow down to peer pressure because you want to you want to be popular, you want to fit in, but it you have to take a stand. You have to take a stand, but you have to know what that stand is all based on, and it's based on what God tells us is the correct thing to do. The whole world is filled with we've all done bad stuff, we've all failed, and we've all caved into peer pressure. But like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abendigo, we have to know that we can't be shaped by the world. The world is going darker and darker and darker all the time. But we have to be shaped by who?
SPEAKER_06God.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, by God. Okay, great stories, by the way. Thank you for sharing that, Gio. And thanks for sharing everybody. So, anybody got any shout outs you want to give to people in your life? You want to say hi to somebody? Timmy!
SPEAKER_03My mom and my dad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Are they are they helping you shape your shape your life after God? I love it. Good. Good for them. Good for them. Anyone else shout out? Shout outs. Shout outs. Gio, you got a shout-out?
SPEAKER_08Um, my wife. Wendy. Hi, Wendy. Hi, Wendy. And uh my daughter, Aria.
SPEAKER_00Aria. She's awesome, by the way. She slaps my hand really hard every time I see her. She gives me fucking. What's your dog's name?
SPEAKER_04Hazel.
SPEAKER_00Hazel. Nice.
SPEAKER_04Black and black and white, people mix.
SPEAKER_00You gotta say you gotta shout out to Hazel. When you say that, when you say your name, say it real close to the microphone.
SPEAKER_04Hazel.
SPEAKER_00So she probably just went, she probably just turned her head right towards the right towards the speaker. So yeah, she's like, somebody say my name? Who said that?
SPEAKER_04Oh.
SPEAKER_00Okay, anybody else?
SPEAKER_04Well, it's in a few days, it's Miss Madison's birthday.
SPEAKER_00Well, today is Miss Madison's birthday.
SPEAKER_04So I'd like to give a shout-out to her.
SPEAKER_00Nice. Yes. Good shout-out. Hey, can we do our our birthday song? Do you guys you guys don't even know my birthday song? Okay, here it is. This is your birthday song and is a very long hey. That was it. That's it. That's our thing.
SPEAKER_04That was pretty suspicious. I couldn't do the John John. That was very suspicious. Very suspicious?
SPEAKER_00No, it's awesome. It's very silly. It is very silly. That is true. So anybody else want to give a shout out to anybody? Okay. Well, I want to say thank you so much for coming to uh help me record the podcast today. I had so much fun. Hope you guys did too. And uh anybody wanna pray? Anybody want to pray at the Go on! Go ahead. Do it, bro.
SPEAKER_04Dear Lord, we thank you for this podcast that we get to attend. And thank you for Pastor Jim for establishing this. And thank you that that we get to visit him on once a week. And and that we get to learn something new every year. Every week. Yes. And it's in your mighty name we pray. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that was such a good prayer. Thank you for that, bro. Thank you for that. And then this one's for you. Or maybe this one.
SPEAKER_04Oh, can you do the thing again? I have something.
SPEAKER_00Which one? The dun dun.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's something that has to do with gritty.
SPEAKER_00Gritty?
SPEAKER_08Please don't.
SPEAKER_00Alright. Please do not. Everybody say bye to everybody on Podcast Land.
SPEAKER_04Bye. Dun dun dun.
SPEAKER_05Hey kids! Let's talk.
SPEAKER_00Hey kids! Today we've been talking about how to refuse to bow. Our scripture was Romans 12.2. Do not be shaped by this world. The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is a story of courage, trust, and not bowing to peer pressure. It would have been completely understandable for those men to just cave, to bow, to not trust God. But they didn't. They stood firm in their faith. Not always easy to do. Okay, remember God loves you and has a great adventure for you if you just trust Him and do not bow to the pressures of this world. Okay, Pastor Jim out.
SPEAKER_05Hey, let's talk.
