Charlotte, Tristan and Southerlyn join Pastor Jim for a podcast!
Hey kids, let's talk.
SPEAKER_00Hey everybody! This is Master Jim, and I am here for another podcast of Hey Kids, Let's Talk. And today we're doing a podcast with three amazing young people. And they're here in my office, and their parents are sitting right over there. And uh so we're gonna say hi and we're gonna ask them to introduce themselves and what their favorite restaurant is and what their favorite food of that restaurant is and all that good stuff. And we are doing a podcast today about our series that's called Make It Make Sense. And today our story is about um something that didn't make sense uh at the time, but I think at the end of the story you're gonna see that it really does make sense to talk about this story. Okay, so who is going to begin? And I'm gonna ask you your name. Ask us what tell us what grade you're in, and then what's your favorite restaurant, what their favorite food is at that restaurant. Okay, who's oh, everybody's pointing at you, Tristan. I guess you're gonna go first. My favorite Wait, wait, tell us your name.
SPEAKER_03My name is Tristan.
SPEAKER_00And what grade are you in?
SPEAKER_03I'm in fifth grade.
SPEAKER_00Are you married yet?
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_00Good. I think you got a few more years. Okay, Tristan. Uh favorite restaurant or what you like to eat there?
SPEAKER_03My favorite restaurant is Olive Garden, and I like to get buttered pasta there.
SPEAKER_00Oh, so good. Yeah, your mom said earlier you would go there every day if you could. So you like you just get the spaghetti with the with the butter on it, you don't get any sauce or anything? Yeah. Sausage or anything?
SPEAKER_03Just plain noodles.
SPEAKER_00Just plain noodles with this with this nice butter on it.
SPEAKER_03Maybe a bit of cheese though.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, cheese is good. So my father-in-law one time, we were at Olive Garden or some one of those Italian restaurants, and the he was hard of hearing, and so his the waiter was like, Tell me when he was putting cheese on it, and he never he he couldn't hear this the waiter say, Tell me when, and the guide kept going and he was like he kept looking at us like, Is this is you gonna stop me with this? All this cheese and it was starting to pile up, pile up. We're like when we we didn't then we realized he he didn't hear the question. Do you like that much cheese?
SPEAKER_05No.
SPEAKER_00No, just a little bit of cheese.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay, who's gonna go next? Who's gonna go? Oh, they're all they're both pointing at each other. Rock, paper, scissors it. Rock, paper, scissors it. Okay, southern. You gotta go next.
SPEAKER_01My name is Sutherland. I'm in fifth grade. And my favorite restaurant is um Lopez. It's where I get like all the wait, is it like restaurant or is it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's restaurant. Which lopez?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Lopez. It's um a Mexican restaurant. And I get the cheese enchiladas.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, cheese. We had some cheese lovers around here today. I love it. And um so uh your favorite restaurant? What was it? What was it called again?
SPEAKER_01Lopez.
SPEAKER_00Lopez. I've never seen that one, but I'll I'll have to take a look at that. So awesome, awesome. Good to have you, Sutherland. And who's last but not least?
SPEAKER_02Hi, my name is Charlotte, and I am in fourth grade, and my favorite restaurant is Texas Roadhouse, and what I like to get from there is a Texas Roadhouse rolls.
SPEAKER_00Oh, steak.
SPEAKER_03I agree, bro. I've been to Texas Roadhouse for once.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Make sure you're staying right in front of the microphone.
SPEAKER_03My brother only eats the rolls there.
SPEAKER_00He doesn't eat anything else?
SPEAKER_02Nope, just the rolls. My dad only lets me eat one roll, otherwise I fill up on rolls.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Is that the place that has the peanuts too?
SPEAKER_03Uh uh sometimes. Sometimes have the peanuts. I know that.
SPEAKER_00I took my parents to one of those restaurants one time and they had a hard time just knocking the peanut shells on the floor. They thought it was being rude. And I was like, no, no, no, they that's what they expect you to do. Because they had a big pile of peanut shells on their plate. I was like, Mom, dad, just knock those things off. But they were like, too nice, I guess. Anyway, I'm so glad you guys are here today for the podcast. Uh so we're going to review the scripture that we've had this month for Colossians 3 2. Can we all say that together, Colossians 3-2? Set your mind on the earthly.
SPEAKER_03Not on things above, not on earthly things.
SPEAKER_00So we need to set our mind on the things above. So what is the things above? What does that mean? Set your yes, Charlotte.
SPEAKER_02The things above are like the stars.
SPEAKER_00Hmm. Well, I guess, but that's in the sky. But what what is this in the spiritual sense? What does it mean? We're putting our mind on the things above. You got an idea, Tristan?
SPEAKER_03God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Because it's it's easy to think about things on not on the earth on on the earthly things, but not in the spiritual sense. Because everything has a spiritual meaning. Everything, because God is everywhere. He is in everything, he knows everything, he's everywhere. So God, the things above, we're keeping our eyes on the the things of God and how the situation can be affected by God. Okay, so there's a lot of stories in the Bible that don't really make sense to us when we first read it, but then as we get into it, we think if we thinking about this in the earthly way, it doesn't make sense. But when we think about it with the God thing, it does make sense. Okay, so we got one of those stories today. Okay, so today's scripture, everybody say Psalm three two.
SPEAKER_03Two.
SPEAKER_00Psalm thirty, Psalm thirty-three, I'm sorry, six.
SPEAKER_03Psalm thirty-three six. Psalm thirty-three six.
SPEAKER_00Nice. So the first word is all. So we're gonna make a wide sweeping motion with both arms, and when we do this motion, it reminds us to say the word what? Nice. So Psalm 33 6 says Okay, now the next two words are the stars. So with both pointer fingers, we're gonna point upward many times at different spots, and that's the word the stars. Okay, so what words are we gonna say when we point at the sky a lot? The stars. The stars. Okay. From the beginning, Psalm 33, 6 says. So we're gonna put both hands and a fist. We're gonna put our right fist on top of the left fist. We're gonna tap the fists together and we're gonna say were, and then we twist our hands a little bit and we say the word created, and we slap the top of our left fist again. Okay, so what words are we gonna say when we do the hand thing? We're created.
SPEAKER_05Okay, from the beginning, Psalm 33, 6 says All the stars were created.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Have you ever gone outside on a clear night and and seen all the stars? Charlotte!
SPEAKER_02Um I have a telescope, so I have that is amazing.
SPEAKER_00I've always wanted one but never got one. What what has been the the favorite thing that you've seen in the in the telescope so far?
SPEAKER_02Um the moon.
SPEAKER_00The moon? Could you see like the details of the craters and everything? That's so awesome. Couple a couple of weeks ago, I think the the moon was in a shape of a smile, and then I can't remember what planets it was that's made eyeballs. So if you looked at it through a telescope, it would it would look like a smiley face. Isn't that cool? I would have I didn't see that. I just saw a picture of it. So anyway, uh yes, you can go outside and see a lot of stars. Just to think the closest star to Earth, other than our sun, it takes the light from that star 4.2 to 4.3 years to reach us. That's the closest star. So when that star uh l its light started at the star, it took four almost four and a half years to get to Earth. What? And you know how fast light moves?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like so fast, it takes four point two to four point three years to reach us. And light travels so fast. Every star we see, and even the ones we don't see, were created by God's breath. Okay, Tristan, I think you were gonna read Psalm 33, 6 from the the whole verse. Can you get to that? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yes. The heavens were made when the Lord commanded it to happen. All the stars were created by the breath of his mouth.
SPEAKER_00Oh, can you imagine? Everybody, breathe out. That was how God created all the stars. He just breathed out and all the stars were created. That sounds amazing. If God can do that with his breath, is there anything God can't do?
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_00No. Okay. Awesome. So we are going to do a story uh from Mark 9, and we introduce the story like this. So when I say the name Jesus, we are going to sing.
SPEAKER_04You know you make me wanna shout! Get my handle something shout!
SPEAKER_00Why are you guys just looking at each other?
SPEAKER_04You gotta sing. Jesus! You know you make me wanna shout! Get my handle something shout!
SPEAKER_00Oh, that was good. Uh, when I say the words, I do believe we're gonna sing this.
SPEAKER_01I like it.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that was so good. And when I say the words, if you can or if I can, we're gonna sing this. You guys are so good at that. One day a big crowd had gathered around Jesus. People were talking, asking questions, and bringing those who needed help. Everybody say help. Help. Suddenly, a man stepped out from the crowd. He looked really worried. Uh-oh, that deserves one of these.
SPEAKER_04Oh no! He said, Jesus, you know you wanna shout.
SPEAKER_00My son is in trouble. Everybody say, trouble.
SPEAKER_03Trouble, trouble.
SPEAKER_00Can't talk, and an evil spirit keeps hurting him. Sometimes it throws him on the ground and he shakes and foams at the mouth. It's so scary. I asked your disciples to help, but they couldn't do it.
SPEAKER_04Jesus! You know you made me shut up!
SPEAKER_00Looked at the man and said, Bring your son to me. Everybody say, Bring your son to me.
SPEAKER_03Bring your son to make your son to me.
SPEAKER_00So they did. As soon as the boy got close, the evil spirit acted up again. The boys started shaking and fell to the ground, rolling around. Everyone gasped. Okay, everybody gasped.
SPEAKER_04Jesus! You know you make me want to shout.
SPEAKER_00Turned to the dad and gently asked, How long has he has this been happening? The man said, Since he was little. The spirit tries to hurt him, even throw him into fire or water. Please, if you can, danger, help us do something.
SPEAKER_01Well, Jesus, looked at him and said, If I can, danger. Danger.
SPEAKER_00Anything is possible. Everybody say anything is possible.
SPEAKER_01Anything is possible.
SPEAKER_00When you believe, the father immediately cried out, I do believe.
SPEAKER_01I like it.
SPEAKER_00But help me when I don't. Jesus, you believe. Look straight at the boy. He spoke with power and love. You evil spirit, come out of this boy and never come back. The spirit screamed, shook the boy one last time, and then it left. Everybody say, Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00The boy lay still. Some people whispered, Is he okay? Did he die? But Jesus, you make me run a shot. Walked over, took the boy's hand, and gently helped him up. The boy stood up strong and healthy. Woohoo! Was the boy good? Uh I believe.
SPEAKER_01That's the way I like it.
SPEAKER_00I like those words, I believe.
SPEAKER_01That's the way I like it.
SPEAKER_04The N Player.
SPEAKER_00Oh, so good. Hey, uh question. Why should we put our faith in Jesus and not in the followers of Jesus? Charlotte, you got an idea?
SPEAKER_02I think we should put our faith in Jesus and not the followers in Jesus because during the story, um the boy's dad said, I asked your disciples to help me, but they didn't do anything. But when Jesus did something, it helped.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you are so 100% correct, Charlotte. The followers of Jesus, uh, they're gonna let you down. Even pastors, I'm gonna let you down, Pastor Mike's gonna let you down, other people are gonna let you down. It's just it's just we're people. But Jesus will never oh, I said Jesus.
SPEAKER_04You know, you make me want to shout, take my hands up and shout.
SPEAKER_00Jesus will never let us down. Uh so Charlotte, I could not have said that any better than you just did. Okay, qu next question. Why did the dad say if you can?
SPEAKER_01Uh because um because like uh because he went to someone first and asked like his disciples, and they said they couldn't do any they couldn't do it. Right. And so he went to Jesus, and so he said, If you can, because he didn't know if he was gonna say yes or no.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm I'm pretty sure the dad had heard about Jesus and some of the amazing things he had done, but he he wasn't sure. He wasn't sure. And then he said, and then Jesus said, If I can, what are you talking about? I sure I can. It's possible for Jesus to do anything that he wants to do. It's just it's not it's not gonna happen if he doesn't want it to happen, but it will happen if Jesus wants it to happen. So the dad said like what we would say too. You got any any thoughts, Tristan?
SPEAKER_03Um, for number three I do.
SPEAKER_00Okay, for number three. When painful painful experiences happen, which is easier? Lean into Jesus or away from Jesus and why?
SPEAKER_03I believe it's uh easier to go away from him because sometimes we doubt God and that makes it hard to believe in him sometimes.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Charlotte, you gotta follow up.
SPEAKER_02Um, I think it's easier to lean into him because I feel like if you like think about it, leaning away from him is kind of harder because then your mind just gets stressed out because you don't know what to believe in. But when you're leaning into him, you're not stressed out.
SPEAKER_00That's true. That's true. So uh how does that relate to the scripture that we've been doing? Um think about uh what does it say? It says um set your mind on things above. So if you don't if you're not leaning into Jesus, what are you doing? You're thinking about things that aren't good. That are the earthly things. You're thinking about the earthly, like the story of the boy. Like he his dad um wanted to lean into Jesus, but he wasn't quite sure. And then he did lean into Jesus and what happened?
SPEAKER_02The evil spirit came out of the boy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, evil spirit came out, and he was uh he was really, really good. So do you guys have any stories from your life about um you know, thinking about things in the earth uh thinking about the not the earthly things but the heavenly things? Do you have any stories from your life about any of that that kind of stuff like uh when you have a painful experience, uh anything about those kind of things in your life that you I mean you guys are so young, but you still have painful things, I'm sure. Yes, yes, yeah Southern Southern one.
SPEAKER_01I lost my sister. She passed away a few years ago. But I knew God was there I knew Jesus and God were there to help me through it.
SPEAKER_00So that was that must have been a real difficult was she younger or older than you?
SPEAKER_01She was she was twenty when she passed away. She was about to turn twenty, I think.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So she was older than you, but still that's a painful experience. Was it hard to lean into Jesus? Or was it you just leaned into Jesus like you you knew God was had this?
SPEAKER_01I knew God had a plan.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Well that's I'm glad to hear that. That's a hard that's a hard one.
SPEAKER_02Charlotte. Um, so I twisted my ankle at my birthday because like when I was like when I landed someone else jumped on the same trampoline, so I twisted my ankle. Um and it hurt really bad. It's like the first time I've ever twisted my ankle before. And um it was kinda hard for me to lean into um Jesus.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02But when I did the next day my ankle was fine.
SPEAKER_00That's so good. I love that. I love that. Yes, Tristan.
SPEAKER_03So this one time we were at um New York and my um grandpa had this like four-wheeler, and we went on it one time. It stopped in the middle of the field, and I felt a burn on my leg, and I was scared, but I knew that Jesus had a plan for me, and then we ran and the four wheeler caught on fire.
SPEAKER_00Ouch. I'm so glad you got off there. Well, I have a story. Um a long time ago I I was um I took the kids in the car. They were little. So probably two, maybe three car seats, and when they were in the car, and I went to the gas station to get gas. And I don't know what was going on in my life, but I forgot to get gas. I paid for it, and then I got back in the car and I went away, and I looked down at the gas gauge and I'm like, wait, I forgot to get the gas. So I went back to the gas I went back to the gas station and the guy's laughing. He's like, I knew you'd be back. I was like, Thank you so much. But you know, I was like, and then I was kind of flustered, and then I got home with the kids, and I put all the groceries away, and and then a little bit later I couldn't find my car keys.
SPEAKER_02Did you lose the car keys at the gas station?
SPEAKER_00No, I drove home. So no, but that's a good question. But I I went h I w I have you ever lost something and then they couldn't find it? And so you look everywhere and you look everywhere you think of. And guess what I didn't do? I didn't lean into Jesus when I first knew that I had lost my car keys. I leaned into Jesus eventually when I looked everywhere and I was like, oh God, I need your help to find me this those keys because I need to go somewhere. And guess what? I heard this I didn't, it wasn't loud, it wasn't, it was on my inside, and it said, look in the refrigerator. And I are huh? Why am I looking in the refrigerator for my car keys? That doesn't make any sense. But then I was like, What are you you laughing at me for? So I looked in, I went, I was like, God, come on, really, they're in the refrigerator. And I opened the refrigerator door and there they were. And I was like, wait, why are my car keys in the refrigerator? When I was putting groceries away, I must have put them, laid them down by the something I put in the like the eggs or something. But god, I needed to lean into God right away. But I think I was flustered from not paying for gas getting gas, not getting paying for the gas, but not getting it. And so I went home and I was flustered and I forgot the keys and I was like lean into God. He can help in those kind of silly situations where we just we he just says, look in the refrigerator.
SPEAKER_03You also leaned into the refrigerator too. That's right.
SPEAKER_00I did lean into the refrigerator. So anyway, uh hey guys, you need to give a shout out. Oh, wait, wait, I I I I need to have somebody pray. Who's gonna pray again? Oh, Charlotte. Okay, let's go.
SPEAKER_02God, thank you for today. Thank you for letting us be able to have a meal today. Thank you for you watching over us and letting us be here at this podcast today. Mm-hmm. And we're able to share everything that we were going to share for all the questions that Pastor Mike um asked us. And God, thank you today for letting us all be able to be a follower of you. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
SPEAKER_00Amen. So good. Okay, who's gonna give a shout out and why? Oh, something.
SPEAKER_01A shout out to my parents because they're awesome and they they they're the best.
SPEAKER_00They are the best for you. I love that. Good good shout-out. Yes, Tristan.
SPEAKER_02To God for where we live on this earth.
SPEAKER_00Amen. Amen.
SPEAKER_02Charlotte. And I want to give a shout out to my dad for taking me here today and taking care of me.
SPEAKER_00And he's right over there, and he's got a great mustache and beard. Amen.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, kind of.
SPEAKER_00What do you mean kind of? Oh, Charlotte. Alright, well, good shout-outs. I want to give a shout out to all of you and all your parents who are bringing you here today. You guys did an amazing job. So, okay, you gotta say uh goodbye one more time when the song is gonna play here. So say bye. Oh, that's the wrong song. My bad fat fingers. Anyway, here's the song, and so say say goodbye, everybody.
SPEAKER_02Bye, Larry.
SPEAKER_00Bye. Is that it? Bye.
SPEAKER_02Bye. Thank you for having us here. Thank you for having me. Thank you.
SPEAKER_00You're so welcome. Thanks for being here.
SPEAKER_05Let's talk.
