Bryce

It's not cobal. It's cobal with an O.

Conor

You should have said cobal to make it more clear that it was an A. Your two pronunciations of those two were very close. It's not Cobal. It's Cobal. You know that's gonna be at the front of this episode. That's a freaking awesome bird. It's like, what do you think it is? It's like a penguin that can fly.

Bryce

Yeah, this is like, this is this is a very adorable bird. I'm very excited about this bird. It's a type of duck. It's apparently a type of duck. Oh my goodness. My new favorite type of duck. Holy s look at that one.

Conor

It is actually a very beautiful bird.

Bryce

Yeah, it is a very, very quite attractive bird.

Conor

Welcome to ADSP the podcast, episode 64, recorded on January 15th, 2022. My name is Connor, and today with my co-host Bryce, we talk about a plethora of things, including the sponsors we want for ADSP and the things we're looking forward to in the year 2022. You were late.

Bryce

And that's the judgiest I've ever heard, Connor.

Conor

You were late. And actually, let me share my screen again. We gotta we gotta share my screen. And I, last time we recorded, sent out a poll. And I I set the time limit on that poll to end exactly during this recording. And when I started uh when I opened up the Google Meets initially, it said ends in 34 minutes. However, it's over now. We didn't get to see it live. And so my plan was to like mid-podcast interrupt you and go, Bryce, I have some news. I did not get to do that.

Bryce

But the results of the poll were already clear from like yesterday.

Conor

And I am so thankful. I would like I would like to let you, the listener.

Bryce

People didn't understand the context.

Conor

I would like to let you, the listener, know that you are informed. I apologize for not having faith in you. Uh and um 61.8% voted that the five-character non-parenthesis version of this uh BQN solution is the better solution.

Bryce

I think that people voted without having sufficient context um here.

Conor

55 people voted, just for the statistician that was angry that I didn't mention uh the I just mentioned the percentage and not the magnitude of folks that tuned in to vote. And uh I'm absolutely thrilled about the results. I think the people have spoken, the listener has spoken, and I I'm just thrilled.

Bryce

I demand a recount.

Conor

We on ADSP the podcast do not endorse recounts, and Bryce was joking.

Bryce

So, so okay, I'll but I'll I'll tell you what I think that this result means because I I legitimately do think that the numbers would be far closer if people um uh understood the uh the subtleties of the order of operations.

Conor

Rejoice, listener, rejoice while Bryce tiles tries to tell you that you didn't know what you were doing. Rejoice in knowing. I mean, 61.8% of you actually should be rejoicing. And uh the other 30 years.

Bryce

I'm not surprised that people would uh pick the form without parentheses that that looks simpler. But the simpler form hides complexity. So uh I I I would I I I still think that with the proper background that it would probably have been closer.

Conor

So the solution, just to recap, was six characters without parentheses.

Bryce

It was the the listener the listener has made it clear that they don't like like us live coding. That's all I'm saying. I'm not just saying that. This is the last time, though.

Conor

This is the last time. So this solution is six characters. And last time, remember last time last episode we called it BQN's after and a parentheses pull. This can be so much simpler because this pattern, once again, where we have a binary function equals and then two unary functions that pre-process the left and right arguments. This one is just identity, and this one is sort. But you have to compose it with right in order to just do it on the right. This is exactly after as well. So we can shave off three characters and then add the after, and this is our actual solution. Honestly, I'm so freaking excited about combin combinators. We don't have time to talk about it, but we're gonna do a whole episode on the D2 combinator, the Dove Keys bird. What's a Dove key? I don't even know. Is that a bird? We're getting into such strange word doveke. Look at that. That's a pretty that's a pretty cute bird.

Bryce

Yeah, it's like that's that's actually a pretty great bird.

Conor

That's a freaking awesome bird. It's like, what do you think it is? It's like a penguin that can fly.

Bryce

This is yeah, this is like, this is this is a very adorable bird. I'm very excited about it.

Conor

The dove key, the D2 combinator. We're not gonna talk about it right now, but listener, get freaking excited. We're not gonna live code, we'll just talk about it. There might be a little bit of live coding, I'm not gonna lie, okay? But I promise it'll be the last one. It's a type of duck.

Bryce

It's apparently a type of duck. Oh my goodness. It's my new favorite type of duck.

Conor

Holy s look at that one. It is actually a very beautiful bird.

Bryce

Yeah, it is a very, very quite attractive bird.

Conor

Which is why it makes I'm not gonna get into it. Stay tuned, listener, for the episode the D2 Combinator, the Dove Key. It's gonna be awesome. First thing we need to talk about uh in our looking ahead 2022 episode The Bingo Board.

Bryce

Yes, the bingo board was amazing. That's a periodic table of programming languages. Where is C on this periodic table of programming languages?

Conor

Oh yeah, you want to zoom in on this?

Bryce

Yeah.

Conor

So in uh I'm trying to find Where's C? C is right there, is right there. And it it shows up as an object-oriented language. So right now, Bryce and I are looking at the periodic table of programming languages. However, that's wrong, that needs to be mixed up. And so it has like eight different colors of different paradigms, OO, dynamic, functional, multi-paradigm. Lots of complaints to be had, although it's a very cool table. But it says each row represents roughly a decade, starting on the second row with the 1950s up to the 2000s on the final row. The first row is pre-1950 with the two mechanical programming systems.

Bryce

Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

Conor

I I I have some the colors denote the programming paradigm that the language in question originally supported.

Bryce

Can we look at can we look at second row? Uh uh second from the the end on the right.

Conor

Oh. Yeah, they misspelled.

Bryce

That's c it's not cobal. It's cobalt with an O.

Conor

You should have said Cobal to make it more clear that it was an A. Your two pronunciations of those two were very close. It's not COBOL, it's COBOL.

Bryce

Not C O B A L.

Conor

You know that's gonna be at the front of this episode.

Bryce

As the self-proclaimed like COBOL historian, I'm deeply offended.

Conor

Anyways, not what we're trying to look at. Tune into programming languages, virtual meetup. Boom, this is what I wanted. So Jonathan O'Connor, uh fellow Cross the Pond, over in the UK, um, was the first, I think, and the only person to come up with a uh bingo card for, and this is I was thinking like a uh when I said bingo card, like a long-term bucket list kind of five by five grid where you know we get the brother-sister combo on once, we've already got the the father-son. But uh Jonathan has gone ahead and done us a by the episode um with uh nine different topics. Uh walnut, APL, excel, algorithm, Slovenia. Slovenia, we love you, Slovenia. I can't mention Slovenia without saying that we love you. Number one, here we here we come, Balkans 2023 tour. Uh running Bryce's mom. Parallel and Stepanov. Someone someone commented, why no Sean? Uh I sort of, I mean, like Stepanov and Sean, I feel like are two P's in a pod. Um, although arguably Sean should be on there. Um how do you feel about this?

Bryce

I I like it. I like it. I um feel like it's pretty accurate. It's pretty accurate. I feel I feel like I'm a I'm slightly offended that running's on there, but cycling's not, because I think we probably spend as much time talking about those two things.

Conor

That's actually probably true. Whenever I do bring up running, you bring up cycling. So that's what I mean. Yeah. Stepanov stands for both Stepanov slash Sean Parent. Running stands for running slash cycling. Uh we love it.

Bryce

Oh my god, and speaking of walnut, yes, I just I just got a phone call from from the delivery folks. The the the beautiful, beautiful walnut bed frame that I ordered in July is uh is finally ready for delivery. The the the matching walnut nightstands are still back ordered though. But uh the the final piece of walnut or the sorry the penultimate piece of walnut furniture is arriving soon. Yeah.

Conor

Awesome. And also penultimate means not ultimate, it means the second from the last, correct? I didn't know that. I always thought penultimate meant like da da da da. You know?

Bryce

No, it's second from the last. I don't know why that word is in my isn't my vocabulary, but it's there.

Conor

Alright. 2022. What are we looking forward to? First things first. All right.

Bryce

Didn't we do this though?

Conor

No, no, no, no, no, no. We only we took a look back on 2021, and then we had to do a look ahead to the future. And my number one goal, I want to be sponsored. Maybe it doesn't happen in 2022. What do you think my two sponsors that I want are, Bryce? And this I'm not even joking. One time I wanted to be sponsored by Cinnabon. Uh I wanted them to pay for all my races, and I had this hashtag runforthebun. I thought it was gonna be huge. I always used to get Cinnabon after my races. I don't know why they didn't take me up on it. I messaged like probably 10 or 20 marketing people on LinkedIn being like, listen, this is my story. And no one got back to me. So uh I'm being serious. We've got uh not like a massive number of listeners, but we got some listeners. We're gonna put some tweets out there at these companies. And one of them, I'm actually I've I'm I'm I'm yeah, we'll let you guess though. What are the two let's just go with that first? What are the two companies you think I want to sponsor this podcast? Hint? They have nothing to do with software.

Bryce

Yeah, you just want stuff. Um, well, Lululemon's got it.

Conor

Yes! Number one gold platinum space.

Bryce

I mean, look legitimately, like anybody from Lululemon who's listening, we would be really great for uh uh like we would be really great for you because like we're two guys in tech and all of our clothing comes from Lululemon.

Conor

Literally, I think it's an untapped market. Uh this podcast is going to the moon, let's be honest. Um, right now we've only got however many listeners, but like if we keep this up for like two decades and we get to 50, what's two, 200 times 50 is like 4,000 episodes. Did I get that right? Who knows? If we go to the moon, though, all through our journey, our tech career, uh, you become CEO of some company, I do something, I don't know, noteworthy. Uh and uh we're not gonna stop wearing Lululemon. Yeah. And and organically, how many times has Lululemon come up on this podcast? And like that's a thing.

Bryce

A lot.

Conor

I don't want sponsors. Like every every podcast, half the podcasts I listen to are like Athletic Greens and delicious, blah, blah, blah. I only want stuff that I already like endorse.

Bryce

Although I I I do have to say I did have to order two articles of clothing, clothing not from Lululemon, which is I needed some cardigans, and Lululemon did not have cardigans. So maybe maybe someone's gonna be a good one.

Conor

Well, yeah, we we can be we can be like their A B testers. I mean, um I wouldn't be surprised if already there is there's been one or two listeners that have heard us uh talk about Lululemon and went and bought a pair of like shorts or sweatpants or pants or whatever. So Lululemon, no joke. We I will go and or maybe one of our nah that they're not gonna do that. I will go and make a compilation of all the times we talk about Lululemon. Or maybe I'll start from now. And uh legitimately, we would love to have you as a sponsor. I don't even know how much money you would pay us. Uh you don't need to pay us anything in the beginning. Don't you think? You can just send us free stuff. We'll let you know what our sizes are. And uh at some point, if this blows up, then yeah, maybe we'll we'll we'll we'll reevaluate our contract. But honestly, I would love to start this ADSP the podcast brought to you by Lululemon. Bryce, what are you legitimately? I'm wearing Lululemon sweats right now. And that's not that was not by design. That's just uh it's cold. It's like, oh yeah, I mean I forgot to mention.

Bryce

Oh, okay. Speaking of, but but but like if they're gonna be a sponsor, they need to bring back the sweatpants that are like the fleece sweatpants. Like, you cannot get those anymore. Can't get them anymore.

Conor

No, if you want to be a sponsor, Lululemon, you don't need to bring anything back. We will give you advice. You're you're trying to mess up the our our gold sponsor, but listen, Lulu, I've got demands. We've got at least a hundred listeners. Um, so that's our number one sponsor. I and I'm like, I when I put my mind to something, uh, because I wanted Cinnabon to be my running sponsor, but I sort of thought it was like, you know, I don't I don't really have any Instagram followers or anything like that. However, uh this this podcast is growing. It's not unsuccessful. And I think that there's like a non-trivial single-digit percent chance that we can make this happen in the next couple years. Sponsor number two, who do you think it is? And this one is it's more a hint, uh less for both of us, more for me.

Bryce

More for you. What do you like that I don't like? Or not that I don't care.

Conor

Not necessarily that you don't like. It's just it's uh the listener probably knows. The listener probably knows.

Bryce

The listener probably knows.

Conor

I guess we're gonna are we gonna call this episode 2022 goals, or is it gonna be Lululemon and Insert Company sponsor us?

Bryce

I don't know. I don't know.

Conor

Um what is a what is a uh a what is it? It's not an anecdote. What is a thing that I do often that irritates you on this podcast?

Bryce

Oh my gosh.

Conor

Do I need to go do it right now?

Bryce

No, the the company, the the the drink company. I don't know what it is.

Conor

I'm coming, I'll be right back, Bryce.

Bryce

Oh you you see, folks, what I have to put up with. You you see what this is like.

Conor

How awesome would it be if we said brought to you by Lululemon? We're both wearing it, our bottoms are very comfortable, and brought to you by Bubbly, the one, the only drink. Here it comes, folks. Here it comes. Woo! We've got today the best flavor, the number one flavor, black cherry. They sell it at Shoppers Drug Mart, but not at Longos and La Blah's and a lot of other stores. So you gotta know where to get it. It's the hardest to come by, but the most delicious. Black cherry buble. Bubbly? It doesn't matter how we say it. But here's where things get interesting. I will happily switch to Perrier or some other sparkling water brand if they want. I spend a lot of money.

Bryce

LaCroix is Le Croix. Le Croix, I think.

Conor

I believe it's Le Croix. Um whatever.

Bryce

Uh I actually French Canadians come at me.

Conor

Yeah, yeah.

Bryce

Uh actual French can also come at me, but I know that it's the French Canadian, like it's the French Canadians that I have active feuds with. It's so good. The French I usually get along with because, you know, we I have great respect for the for the French food. It's the French Canadians that I usually have food, food conflicts with.

Conor

See, and you've got two good French Canadian friends, which is funny. Yes, yes. Um, but yeah, honestly, it's delicious. I was a Perrier guy for a while. Um, strawberry Perrier, grapefruit Perrier. But yeah, if uh and would you drink sparkling water if they were to send you some that's a thing I don't even care, like yeah, I I I I would, yeah, sure, why not? I probab I think I calculated at one point during the summer based on how much, because like literally I don't really drink water, I just drink sparkling water. I think it was like $800 or $1,000 a year spending on sparkling water. And what's garbage is that like every tech company in Silicon Valley has free sparkling water like stacked up, which is like it's not a huge deal, but like, yeah, I mean I spend and also I have to cart the heavy, you know, 12-pack or six-pack things back and forth. If I could just get uh bubbly to send those straight to my place, we could we could always start each episode cracking open a bottle of bubbly or a can of bubbly, and uh we'd also get to E B test their new flavors.

Bryce

Not for free though.

Conor

We did have a soda machine.

Bryce

Yeah, we but but it wasn't like like free. Like the soda machine was free. The one food-related port perk at the NVIDIA headquarters is so in NVIDIA's um like second largest office is in India. Um I don't remember what um uh what what percentage of the workforce uh uh is uh in our India office, but like it's a large shop. Um and so at the at the headquarters, the cafeteria, there's there's sort of like two sections to the cafeteria. There's like an American section to the cafeteria, and then there's like a very legit like Indian section of the cafeteria. And it's oh like like that is like the section of the cafeteria that you go to if you want like some quality food. Um so like like that's that's the one the one big perk to the NVIDIA um like like big food perk to the NVIDIA headquarters, which is there's really, really, really good Indian food uh at the cafeteria.

Conor

You've been to the India HQ, I assume.

Bryce

Uh no, no, no, no. I'm saying at the at the US headquarters.

Conor

Oh, yeah.

Bryce

US headquarters of NVIDIA, because we have um uh a lot of uh engineers who who are from India, um uh there there's always an Indian section of the cafeteria. Um for those who you know, in particular because a lot of folks from India may have dietary restrictions. Um and uh and that's like like I I don't want to say bad things about you know the NVIDIA cafeteria. Like all the food like that's pretty good. But but there's a very different level and quality between like the American side and the Indian side.

Conor

Yeah. Yeah, I miss uh I was just thinking today that I really miss there was a bike route that I used to do. What is that trail called that goes sort of right next to San Jose and out to that water reserve?

Bryce

Yeah, uh San San Tomas.

Conor

Yeah, yeah.

Bryce

That that used to that was my daily bike ride. That was my daily bike ride.

Conor

I used to go on like a 40k loop and mostly because oh yeah, I was saying that it's it's minus 18, which is zero degrees Fahrenheit, and feels like minus 28 Celsius, which is minus 18 Fahrenheit right now. And uh it is actually quite beautiful, just very cold in Toronto. And I was just thinking that like right now in in San Jose and Santa Clara and Sunnyvale, it's probably quite quite nice. Yeah. And uh I would love to go for a big bike ride and you ever miss it?

Bryce

You ever miss California?

Conor

Oh, all the time. All the time. I mean, um there's definitely I haven't been here long enough to miss it yet.

Bryce

But like I miss some aspects. I miss some aspects.

Conor

I miss the weather. I don't miss the lifestyle, to be honest. Like it's very suburban. I much prefer being in a downtown sort of metropolis where I can walk out the door and there's everything I could possibly need.

Bryce

Yeah.

Conor

But definitely the like the the long bike rides every weekend, regardless of what time of year it is, or the long runs. And like right now, I have to you know bundle up in several layers and tokes and gloves. And anyway, so there's those pros and cons, but definitely the weather. I I am envious of folks that are have that Silicon Valley weather or California weather. Anyways, enough about that. It's maybe maybe this is gonna be literally Lululemon and Bubbly. Um come please come sponsor us and we'll cut this 2022.

Bryce

Although let's go at some at some at some point we need to have some episodes with some actual meat.

Conor

No, no, you know what? I love I love this. Is it used to start we I I will promise you that I have a good C algorithm episode planned. We'll do that at some point. And um there's a part of me that feels bad that like potentially we're hurting viewership by talking about combinators all the time. But listen, I'm just too excited about stuff. I'm I'm starting to treat this uh podcast the same way I treat my YouTube channel. There's certain types of videos that I post and they get like you know 50,000, 75,000, 100,000 views, and then all the APL videos get like a thousand or two thousand. But I I love making those APL videos, I'm not doing it for views. Uh technically I get paid money by YouTube, but like I've made close to 300 videos, and I think I've made $3,000 in total since I started the channel in 2017. So I don't know, I don't know what that works out to, but like but like this is not a video.

Bryce

And how many hours do you spend on the video?

Conor

This is not uh this isn't really changing anything for me monetarily speaking. Um I'm gonna make don't

Bryce

Don't quit your day job, kid.

Conor

Yeah, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna stop making APL videos just because I could increase my $10 per video to like, you know, 50 or 100. Anyways, so 2022, you go first. What are you looking forward to? Or and yeah, you can just say if you can't talk about stuff, because I think last time we did this, there was a bunch of stuff we couldn't talk about. And then we said we'd come back and talk about it, but I don't know if we really did. Although I think we did, because yeah, with some of it was announcing stuff at GTC. Yeah.

Bryce

Um, well, so I'm um, I think for me, one of the big exciting things for for this upcoming year is that we're gonna be finalizing uh C23. Um in and um this doesn't usually happen, but um C23 is uh is also being finalized. Usually the the the ship years for C and C don't line up. Um and actually in some ways it's helpful for us if they don't line up because um uh the C standard is based on the C standard, and so we need a bit of time to update the C standard to reference the latest C standard. Um uh and if they're being released concurrently, that's a little tricky. Um but I think both are actually pretty exciting. Um and uh it it it's looking like we might um land some some big features in C23, but um that's all I'm gonna say on that for right now. Um and uh yeah, I mean I think that that's gonna be a good chunk of my year. Um uh you know, this is 2022, but um basically we said, you know, we will uh uh finish C23 this year and then it'll be published, you know, next year. Um and uh and yes, so I mean I'm I'm excited about that. Um I think that's that's probably one of the big things for me. Yeah. What about you?

Conor

Yeah, no, C23, man. I'm getting excited. It could it could even get more exciting potentially, but yeah, we'll talk about that stuff in the future. Work stuff and some project stuff I can't talk about. Probably what I'm most excited about is is the same thing that was the highlight last year. And actually, I'm gonna cut out I'm gonna cut out this next thing, and then in three years, we'll we'll come back to this if it comes true. But so yeah, really focused on gonna be focused on running. Um a couple of my goals that I will share. I'm I'm my current 5k PB is like 1725. I want to like take a minute, a minute and a half, two minutes off that. And then the thing that I'm gonna cut out is that okay, Connor's got more ambitious goals than me.

Bryce

Connor's got more ambitious goals than me.

Conor

Anyway, so end of end of stuff being cut out, but yeah, um gonna really hope to set some some good personal bests, train hard, and um and I got a couple other goals, but yeah, focus on running, uh some exciting stuff potentially gonna happen at work. What else did I have? Oh yeah, I could be starting, you're hearing it here first, folks, on ADSP the podcast. I could be starting a third podcast. I don't have time to do that right now, but in the second half of 2022, I love these, I love these podcasts. This is like it's like half a catching up with a friend and then also getting to talk about tech stuff. It's like a regularly scheduled like hanging out with a friend during pandemic times.

Bryce

Yeah, that that's what that's all it is. That's all it is, really.

Conor

And then sometimes we talk about programming stuff, sometimes we talk about how we want Lululemon and Bubbly to be our sponsors and to send us free stuff. So yeah, I might I might do that. And yeah, we'll leave it at that. What do you think about the conference outlook for 2022?

Bryce

Yeah, that that was the other thing I was that that was the other thing I was gonna mention, which is um I would like to uh travel again at some point in in this year. Although I honestly I um I don't know. I don't feel the same like itch to be traveling regularly as I used to have. Maybe it'll come back, but um I'm supposed to go to Ireland, Scotland.

Conor

Oh, when are you going to Ireland?

Bryce

Uh I think like May for the JTC1 plenary. Um Aspen, uh uh uh probably Israel.

Conor

Um uh Denver, Hawaii, and you're listening all the locations that correspond to conferences or committee meetings. Uh yeah, the the the thing things that I am tentatively supposed to go do, uh, and then I guess that's a fun game for the C listener is to reverse engineer what those locations uh correspond to.

Bryce

Yeah. Um although uh at least one of those was HBC and two of those were JTC1 things, so they'll probably probably not be able to quite get those. But uh I don't know whether any of those will happen. Um I guess we'll just have to see. Yeah.

Conor

Yeah.

Bryce

Yeah, but I I would I would like to I would like to to to get back to a uh an in-person C ⁇ conference this year.

Conor

I would yeah, I would like just to get back to a a conference, let alone a C. Um Strange Loop is in October, and I would love to go to that because I wanted to go last year. But yeah, that's the thing too, is NVIDIA's policy currently, and I think a lot of companies' policies are like no no unnecessary travel, which conferences fall under. So even if you know things got way better in the next four months, which at the moment doesn't look doesn't there's no strong indicators that that is the trick the trend.

Bryce

I think I won the betting pool in my team at work for when NVIDIA's March conference would go uh uh you know um all virtual. I think we may we I think we may have talked about that last week, but our the company conference is now all virtual.

Conor

Yeah, we talked about it last week, but the listeners heard about it like a month ago at this point. Even today I was like, you know what, we're gonna record for 30 minutes, it's gonna be 2022, and then we got lots of stuff to chat about. But yeah, so yeah, conferences may or may not happen. I know I did see a tweet that the conferences that that um who did that was it Timor? I think yeah, Timor saw that.

Bryce

I saw that tweet. I think it's a little premature for us to get excited about face-to-face conferences.

Conor

Yeah, and then that was and I thought so so Timur well we'll put in the show notes if folks are interested, had a tweet about you know, five or so conference C conferences that were all planned to be in person and was sort of excited about it. And then Tony, Tony Van Eard, for those that don't know who Tony is when we refer to Tony in the C community.

Bryce

Have we not had Tony on this podcast?

Conor

We technically did. You were not available because it was during C now, and he did show up halfway through because he forgot. Um but he has he has been one of our how many guests have we had on? Sean, uh Ben Dean, Tony, that that's okay, Dave Abrahams.

Bryce

That's another goal for next for the second year. More guests.

Conor

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Who and uh Eric and Otto. So is that six in total? Oh no, and and Chandler and Patricia. How can we forget them? So that's we've actually had eight guests.

Bryce

Yeah. I want Tony back. Tony, come, come, come to our podcast.

Conor

Should he be our first? Oh yeah, let's uh I mean we already rattled off in our 2021, which hasn't been released yet, although the listener has heard it by this point. Uh Jesus, I'm doing some mental gymnastics, kind of trying to keep straight of like what has the listener heard. It's pretty easy, Connor. It's sequential. What we've said, the listener has heard, pending that they listen to all the episodes.

Bryce

Which, if you have my apologies. My sincere, my sincere apologies to you.

Conor

Oh listener. I I'm not I'm not apologizing um at all. I wish, because this is, I honestly, I have to say, it's this is stays pretty true to the podcast that this is based on Magic Read Along, of just two guys that sounds like they're hopping on the call with each other, and for the first six minutes they chat about what the person's cooking on the barbecue, or you know, literally one time they record and the guy's got a baby in his lap. And he's like, Do you should we really be recording right now? And he's like, Oh, yeah, that's good. The baby's fine. And he's like, I feel bad, man. Like, you go take care of your family. We don't need to record one of these right now. So, like, half the podcast is like one of the co-hosts uh feeling bad about the fact that they're recording because he's got a baby in his lap. Um I wish if so the reason I said oh is um I was thinking the other day, I wish that there were more podcasts like this kind of style. And maybe there are, and I just don't know about them.

Bryce

So if the Before we got off on this tangent, weren't you talking about a third podcast that you wanted to start that you still have not explained what it is?

Conor

Oh, yeah, yeah. I mean, should I should I explain what that podcast is gonna be or should I leave it as a surprise? Um man, and we really dropped the ball. This is the mistake I'm not gonna make with my third podcast. You know, you know how many views, according to our little Buzz Sprout site, if we go to stats, guess how much views our f episode zero has and then versus episode one? Or actually guess the ratio first. Because that that's the ratio will be easier to guess than the actual magnitude on each of these.

Bryce

What uh I guess maybe episode one is a lot more.

Conor

Uh by episode one, if you mean episode zero, then yes. Or zero indexed.

Bryce

Well, wait, you said guess how many I think episode zero and episode one have?

Conor

Yeah.

Bryce

And I I said I gu I suppose that one probably has more.

Conor

No.

Bryce

Okay.

Conor

It's a ste it's a s it's a steady drop off. The point that I'm about to highlight here is that like anyone that's thinking about starting a podcast, maybe record a few, figure out the audio issues, and then re release those as like episodes 20 through 23. Yeah. Uh because the qu I think the quality of your phone.

Bryce

Oh, yeah, I've listened to episode zero, the audio is not good.

Conor

Yeah, yeah. Um you gonna guess or do you do you want me to tell you the stats?

Bryce

What what's what tell me the stats? Give it its name.

Conor

Episode zero is twelve thousand eight hundred eighty-six, and episode one is four thousand eight hundred and six. And I think that's like a normal thing for a lot of podcasts. It's like the the episode your first episode is gonna for all of time have the most, unless if it goes super viral at some point. Um, but just I feel it it hurts my soul because I I know our audio is not as good as it is now.

Bryce

Yeah, yeah.

Conor

Not that it in the long term makes, I think, a huge difference, but it's still there's a part of my soul that it hurts a tiny bit. That was totally a totally a digression.

Bryce

Do I tell people what's the new podcast? What's the new podcast?

Conor

Uh should I should I tell people? I don't know.

Bryce

I feel like it's- You can't you can't not tell people now. You can't like don't be a tease.

Conor

Okay. The podcast will be called. And actually, I recorded a pilot episode of this back in, I believe, early April or late March of 2019, before my first ever conference talk at C now. Uh, but I messed up my audio and then things went crazy after that conference, and so I never got back to it. And uh I act I still actually have the domain name for the Programming Language Podcast.com.

Bryce

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I I vaguely remember you telling me about this.

Conor

Yeah, and the and the style is gonna be somewhat similar to this, but more just like, you know, guests that I want to talk to are like Guy Steele, um, Chris Lattner, you know, basically programming programming language designers and enthusiasts, might have someone like Context Freon who's got a YouTube channel, and um yeah, a ton of people that I want to talk to that are basically just like PL experts. Uh Marshall Lockbaum, who is the creator of BQN, probably he will be my most frequent guest because I have so many questions for that guy. Um, although those episodes are gonna be the most esoteric, and me being like, okay, listen, why did you get rid of this Unicode symbol and replace the meaning of this Unicode symbol in the dyadic case? And let's talk about how you can spell the D2 combinator in BQN. And um those those episodes will come with uh sort of you know, warner, listener, beware. Um but we'll see. I don't really have the time at all to do that.

Bryce

Weren't you supposed to have a co-host for that for that podcast? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.

Conor

David David Kunst was the uh main host of LambdaCast. And so that that episode that the pilot episode that we recorded um was with him. I feel really bad about that. That like he agreed to like do an episode and then I just kind of I don't think I disappeared. I sent him an email saying I messed up the audio, so I'll have to see if I'm gonna go forward with this. But he was treating it as sort of like a test run. And I wonder, I wonder if he listens to this or knows that I now have two other podcasts because he probably remembers that guy that he did a podcast recording of this thing he just.

Bryce

It's like one of those, it's like I'm sure everybody has had that that one project that they they did some of the work for it, but then like there was some roadblock, and then they it just fell in the back burner. And then just like three years later, you're like, oh yeah, yeah, like one day I'm gonna get back to that. I had that happen with this one academic paper that um it was a really good paper about uh uh the performance of HPX's threads um uh scheduler. And like I had like a hard drive die, and like I lost like a bunch of the data for the paper, and then like it just like threw me off like finishing it, and then like I left LSU and I was at Berkeley Lab and like just never got around to like reproducing, like it was like 90% done. Um, and I just like never got around to finishing it. And like at some point I was just like, you know what? I'm just gonna move on with my life. I'm just gonna move on. It just wasn't meant to be.

Conor

Yeah, sometimes projects, yeah, they just sort of hit a wall. And if I think it was less that it hit it's a combination of hitting a wall and then also a bunch of other things going on. Because if if I hadn't gone and spoken at C now and um that sort of started a chain reaction of things, yeah, I probably would have been able to spend more time focusing on because I my goal was to go and re-record my own audio and still have his audio work, which I actually have done once for like five minutes of one of these episodes, uh where my audio wasn't working, but like to do it for like an hour and a half would if that's like a half day, full day activity.

Bryce

Well, and it it's it's like I feel like these what one of the common attributes of these like you know projects that you never get back around to is like you had something that was like perfect and golden, and then like some part of it was lost, and then you have to try to replicate it again. Right. You'll never quite get back to what it was, and so then you're always it always feels inadequate.

Conor

And also, too, like the the act of doing something for the second time, a lot of the times it's just like it's hard to get as excited about, like, you know, going and re recording your own audio, which is clearly not going to be as authentic as like the first time round. That's just like you know, walking through mud up to your knees kind of kind of activity.

Bryce

Yeah, exactly. Exactly.

Conor

Anyways, so let's let's stop this recording. Twenty twenty two. It's gonna be great. Stay tuned. Thanks for listening. We hope you enjoyed and have a great day.
