SPEAKER_06What are my veins?
SPEAKER_05Sorry. Awesome.
SPEAKER_03Anything you want to say, Annie?
SPEAKER_05Back at it again. Damn it.
SPEAKER_03That's what I said. That's the thing I said.
SPEAKER_05Back at it.
SPEAKER_03Daniel.
SPEAKER_05Damn, Daniel. Back at it again.
SPEAKER_03Hi everybody. Welcome back to What the podcast? Going strong since 2020. Episode 298. Episode 298, you guys. Ooh. Almost there.
SPEAKER_05What do you do for 300?
SPEAKER_03I'm Ryan. And I'm John. And together we are Ryan John. Cheers. Welcome back, John. Welcome back to the podcast. John Albrecht.
SPEAKER_01I don't think that's the right top choice.
SPEAKER_03Oh, sorry. Cheers. Cheers.
SPEAKER_01Hey, do these yellow glasses make my eyes look crazy? No, they look really nice. They look awesome. Jaundice.
SPEAKER_05Do we all look jaundice looking at us?
SPEAKER_01I see this is controversial because I was telling Jordan, I was like, I think it looks fine. Everybody looks better. Jordan puts it down, she's like, this is like insanely yellow. And I'm like, so I don't know. I think it looks normal.
SPEAKER_03Joining us so sweet. My lovely wife, Kara Tefoya. Mother of my child, my unborn child, Lucy Jim. Hey! And uh this candle sort of wrapping up her shift. Always fresh, never frozen. Any discusscope. There's a full MM in the candle.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, whenever I can put half an MM in the candle.
SPEAKER_03That'd be ridiculous.
SPEAKER_05That's been move.
SPEAKER_03I thought maybe it was burning him. Um guys, what's up? This is uh on the week of Jack Albright's first birthday.
SPEAKER_01National holiday. That's crazy. I know.
SPEAKER_03We were just talking about Operation Baby, which hasn't been implemented yet, but we did end up deploying last year, right around this time. And um, it's just crazy to me that now we're a year later. Jack is a whole person.
SPEAKER_01In a like a little brief moment, we'll be doing it for you guys. Crazy.
SPEAKER_03And then we're gonna be doing it.
SPEAKER_01Have you guys had that conversation about like um what's the protocol hospital scenario? Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03We've already gone through that. We kind of went through it when we had our hospital tour, like what our plan was, and it's a very loose plan, and I'm gonna walk you through it right now. Go to the hospital, have the baby, go home, eat a big cheese booger.
SPEAKER_06Are you gonna are you gonna um she said that a lot of parents decide to leave early because they're like, oh, the baby's so easy, and then the 25th hour comes and the baby's hungry, and you don't know you need help. Sure. My mom specifically in the tour was like, Don't leave early.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I hate hospitals, so I'm like, I would love to go home as soon as possible, but I I see it for that.
SPEAKER_01I'll say though, like I was we were kind of the same way. I was like, oh well, like the first couple times the nurse like swaddled him and put him down to sleep for us. Like the first couple of like mo like when he woke up, because he wakes up every and I mean p babies typically wake up every couple of hours when they're firstborn because they need to eat a lot. Um and by like the third time, I was like, Oh, just call the nurse, she'll just come swaddle him, no problem. And then she goes, Okay, now you I want you to do it. I'm like, no, that's what you're here for. She goes, No, no, no, no, no, I'm paying for you. And I and so I I do it, and she goes, Yeah, see, that's great. You can totally do it. And she's like, and I was like How do you feel about it now?
SPEAKER_03Are you like, oh no, no big I'd be swaddling babies or oh yeah, swaddling babies.
SPEAKER_01I feel like I could go back. I could like go back to the back.
SPEAKER_03Jack doesn't still get the swaddle. No. When are they stuck getting swaddled?
SPEAKER_01That's a good question. I think it's different for everybody.
SPEAKER_06I mean, we stop getting swaddled when they want free movement.
SPEAKER_03Sleeping in the crib?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean we so we we had this um swaddle that was like we had the normal swaddles. We have we still have a ton of them.
SPEAKER_02Sure, sure.
SPEAKER_01And the ones he came out that the hospital gave us and everything, really sweet. And but then they make these really cool ones that are like kind of a weighted like um snuggle me thing where it's like it's like a full little poncho, sure. And then there's like little wraps, so you can like put him in that and then put his little hands down. And then we kind of gradually graduated from that. And then now he's just like he wears jammies. He'd be wearing jammies. Honestly, it depends on how you're gonna do it. Because if you're gonna co-sleep, sure, I don't think the swaddle lasts that long. But if you're gonna if you're gonna be like a true baby always goes in the bassinet, right? We go and and every n every time we get up and we bring him back to bed, we feed him, or whatever he needs, um I think you have the you might might swallow longer.
SPEAKER_03I'm not sure how I feel about that because I am a roller.
SPEAKER_01You won't be a roller when the baby comes back.
SPEAKER_03You think so?
SPEAKER_01I was a roller, but also the cats before.
SPEAKER_06You become intimately aware the cats like to sleep in random spots.
SPEAKER_03I'm a little worried about that too. About the where the cats be sleeping, where the baby be sleeping.
SPEAKER_01I I mean we had friends, we had friends that did the basset like true all the way through, and then they they slept trained, like they did sleep training with their baby at like around 10 months, and the transition was great. And now the baby goes to sleep at 7 30 every night, they have a little routine, and they have like an hour together, and then they go to bed, and and then it's like we're we're still co-sleeping. I mean, I'd I'd love to kick that guy out of the nursery. Yeah, well, I'm letting mom mom pull the trigger on it.
SPEAKER_06Kick that kick that guy to the curb.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03The proverbial curb, of course. Yeah. The procureal.
SPEAKER_01But I'll just go.
SPEAKER_06He's gonna turn one and then he's gonna go, Mom and Dad, I'm gonna go to the room. I require somewhere to sleep.
SPEAKER_01I want my room. His new thing is What's that room over there? I they go to bed, I and then I usually come to bed later. And so, but lately he's been like rolling away from his from Jordan and then like sleeping in my spot. So then I get up there and I'm like, okay, I have to like I have to like push over.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and then message.
SPEAKER_01And then this is my spot. I'll sleep on my side and I'll feel I'll feel him roll over, and I'm like, great, now I'm stuck because I'm on the edge. Right. And so I'm like, and then I feel his little hand on my back. I'm like, oh my gosh. And then sometimes I'll go to roll, like I'll go to roll over, thinking he's further away, and I'll just feel his little hand on my back. He's like, hey, that's close enough. That's too far. This is my spot in bed. Very sweet. I can't wait to kick that guy to the curb, personally.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know what? Good riddance, I say. Good freaking riddance. Get out of my bed, little guy. No, but he's turning one this week. That's pretty amazing. I can't believe it. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_06And we were there.
SPEAKER_03He was just a twinkle in his father's eye. And now, now here he is. What's the what's the uh you got any fun plans going on? I know there's a party. Big party on Space. Big party.
SPEAKER_01Um we'll be there. No, not crazy. I mean, like we're doing a photo shoot tomorrow. Cake smash photo shoot. Make a smash cakes tonight. Whoa. Already made the cakes. Just pipe in them tomorrow tonight, and then um he's gonna smash one tomorrow, and then you'll smash one on Saturday. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_03Saturday is his actual birthday or tomorrow's Saturday's Saturday. Okay, that's what I thought.
SPEAKER_01On his actual birthday. So exciting. But yeah, I mean, it's nothing crazy. I mean, it's so funny when they're that little. I'm like, everything's kind of for for you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well, yeah, that's kind of my question about presents for a one-year-old birthday party. Why do you get a one-year-old?
SPEAKER_01Just cash.
SPEAKER_05But that's truly I feel like Yeah, like you just get embodied.
SPEAKER_03Did you did you set one of those up? Of course. I'm definitely waiting for it. I'm going to.
SPEAKER_01You do it when you do taxes. It's it's really great. I mean, I and I I actually am trying to figure out how to actually. It's a fund, right?
SPEAKER_03It's like a basically like an IRA type. It's an investment. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It goes out, it goes with the market. It's pretty conservative. But I mean, over the next 18 years, it it'll accrue quite a bit of money. Yeah, sure. It depends on the market.
SPEAKER_03If you like contribute to it, for sure.
SPEAKER_06It's just a free thousand bucks. Pretty much.
SPEAKER_05It's a free thousand bucks to to try to entice people to set up accounts because people aren't putting money into the market. Yes. So it's trying to get people like Are people putting money into the market?
SPEAKER_03No, theor theoretically, people aren't buying into the market. But like, yes, they are. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I think like the same billionaire. I want to double down. I want to put like a hundred bucks in there every couple of months. A couple months. Sure. Because I'm like, hey, it's already there. Because that was one of my things. Um this is a good thing. Setting it up as a hard part is I was trying to figure out some sort of investment fund for him that I could contribute to. And then I was like, oh wait, he already has that account. Like I just need to figure out how to put money in there actually.
SPEAKER_06Smash later.
SPEAKER_03But that doesn't I mean you'll always be losing money. Yeah, yeah. You don't uh you don't participate in the economy with that. But but arguably that's safer because cash is king and like if there was a big tank, your cash could be less valuable than the money or more valuable than the money in your account.
SPEAKER_01Sounds insane, but I'm like, if you wanted to like once a year like kind of foolproof, re recession proof slash like inflation proof, is like buy like a precious metal like gold or silver. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_06Silver's not the like school silver isn't as much as it used to be. But I know that following all the like jewelry silversmith people that I follow, they said like their tools for like silversmithing are so expensive right now.
SPEAKER_03Because everybody wants to do it to have a side hustle.
SPEAKER_01My um it's just the material. His mom sold her like family heirloom like silver dining wear set, like legit, because she's like, no one's ever gonna use this again, whatever. She got like five five thousand dollars. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I think my parents still have my grandma's.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_06Because you never that was always like back in the day, you got that as a gift and you never use it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was like their wedding. It's real silver. You don't use it.
SPEAKER_03Do you guys want to um collect scrap copper with me? Do you guys want to do that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, do you want to go steal metal copper?
SPEAKER_03Like uh, well we don't have to steal it. I keep getting TikTok videos of people that are like, I bought a bunch of scrap cables and they're all rubber coated, right? But you like have to strip them. You take a little bit. You know what I'm talking about. You take the wires out and then you bulk sell copper to those like recycling plants. No, it's actually not. It's super expensive.
SPEAKER_01It's like a not a precious metal, but it's like kind of the common joke running joke is like.
SPEAKER_05No, pennies haven't been copper for a long time. It's like alloys, but part copper? Originally they were. No, they're they're like a tinted sink.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yes. Wow, you know so much. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_06I know, I'm really smart. The copper sinks are crazy. You gotta clean it with ketchup. Oh, god. You seen that?
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_06Oh, the copper hammered copper.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's kind of the bit is like people be like usually drug addicts are like stealing copper cables from people's homes and like selling them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06How do you know what's a copper cable?
SPEAKER_03Everything's copper cables. A bunch of stuff. I mean, no, it's more like home stuff, like electric you know, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Copper piping too.
SPEAKER_03Copper piping.
SPEAKER_06Oh, I've seen well, copper piping is like most houses, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, sure. Well, old house, for sure. I don't know if it's copper. That's like kind of a rich people thing. Rip it all out. I think ours are like those old school, like I don't know what Go ahead, Annie. What were you saying?
SPEAKER_05Oh, I just I had a neighbor talking about the copper sinks who ruined their copper sinks. What they put in it. But they bleach. Oh. They cleaned it with bleach, not thinking, not like having no idea. And it like eroded the copper, and it like they had to be a little bit more. It turns into mustard gas shell. Yeah, it's like horrible. Yeah, horrible. And then she tried to like save it and salvage, and they're expensive. And I was like, hey, dumb. I kinda I'm kinda anti-stainless steel sink too, though. Dumb. Why?
SPEAKER_03Give it to me.
SPEAKER_05I just feel like I hate the now, okay. This could sound stupid.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03Careful.
SPEAKER_05I hate the sound.
SPEAKER_03A lot of uh people out there stainless steel stands.
SPEAKER_05I hate the sound of like a dish scraping on the stainless steel sink.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I also think that it there's it it gets so gross. The watermarks, the thing, the grime, everything's so gross. I like a porcelain sink. Just wipe it down, believe me. You know what? Actually, I found a bathroom sink? Yeah, I like porcelain sink. We had a porcelain sink growing up.
SPEAKER_06Our bathroom sink gets way dustier, dirtier than our stainless steel in the kitchen. Because I don't know how to either. I literally wipe it every night. I wipe it down. By the next morning, there's already dust. I don't know if it's like where is the dust coming from?
SPEAKER_03I don't think our sink is porcelain. I think it's like a porcelain uh coat.
SPEAKER_06Fake.
SPEAKER_03It's like fake. It's like a fake porcelain.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but it should be porcelain.
SPEAKER_06Well, your toilet is a porcelain throne. Right.
SPEAKER_05I one time, you know you're an adult when you have an opinion on sink. I one time nanny's for a family that had like almost like a faux stone sink. And I loved that. Faux stone. Faux stone. Yeah, a phone sink. And that I was like, if I ever get to choose a sink, I'm picking this bad boy. Because it was awesome.
SPEAKER_01And you will get to pick a sink sometime.
SPEAKER_05And it was like dark gray, you like it covered everything, it didn't get water spots. And it could like, you know, one one day when I can afford a home. I chose our sink in our bathroom.
SPEAKER_03One day, not only when you can afford a home, but then you can afford that bathroom reno, that remodel.
SPEAKER_05That kitchen reno.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I believe it. All right.
SPEAKER_03Hey, you know, you get that piggy bank going?
SPEAKER_05Can I get a Trump account?
SPEAKER_03No, unfortunately. You have to age limit. It's you have to be born or a kid within the year that they launched or something. I think it's if you're if you're born from now until 2028 or something.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. That sucks. Whenever it was implemented. Do you think the next do you think when like Obama comes back in the reelection, like he'll give out free cheeseburgers and we'll all get laid and yeah, probably it'll be the world will be awesome when Obama comes back. I wonder who's gonna be on the next ticket. Because right now I feel like there's no prospects.
SPEAKER_03I think um f from the Republican side of things, I think they're definitely gonna push JD Vance. I think they're kind of pushing him now. Yeah. I think they're kind of jumping ship on the Trump of it all. But I think Trump also could like launch his own thing, like his fan base, his follower base is like big enough that he could like still run, like not as a Republican, like just as himself. Um, Democrats aren't really doing much of anything.
SPEAKER_05I don't know, they don't have a guy the person who is like the golden boy of the Democrats, right now.
SPEAKER_03Say with me.
SPEAKER_05Zoran Mondani, my boy, and he cannot run for president. I know it sucks. It sucks. And he goes, Well, like, in the constitution, I legally can't run any presentation.
SPEAKER_03And they're like, they're like, would you support being able to like change the constitution? He's like, no. Why would I want to do that?
SPEAKER_01The constitution's great. He probably doesn't want to. Honestly, at this point in a bad job. In his you know, tenure as the mayor of New York, he probably already regrets doing it. I can't imagine that position being fun.
SPEAKER_03Oh, he's I don't know if you're tracking his like office. He's kicking ass. He is like, in the first hundred days, he like cleaned up their debt. He like found the money and repurposed the money. He's like, everybody gets a free puppy. Like, it's like good times over in New York City right now. He was like fixing all the infrastructure, like the buses are gonna be free by the end of the year. Like so ridiculous. Yes.
SPEAKER_06I don't believe that.
SPEAKER_03It's happening.
SPEAKER_05It's not gonna happen. Okay. He's gonna say that, but it's not gonna happen.
SPEAKER_03You know, LA used to have one of the I'm telling you, look into what's going on.
SPEAKER_05They had a light rail, they had like a trolley, like a light rail. It was like cable cars. Yeah. LA and um New York were the first two major cities to have cable cars.
SPEAKER_03He was paying all those homeless people to shovel the snow. You remember that? Awesome.
SPEAKER_05Genius.
SPEAKER_03Amazing.
SPEAKER_05No one's using the homeless people enough.
SPEAKER_03But he can't be president. And I think that maybe president is overrated. Maybe we should just have like a bunch of great mayors and call it a day. Right?
SPEAKER_05We have a bunch of great mayors.
SPEAKER_01Local government. The powers and local government. That's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_05He's our mayor of San Diego.
SPEAKER_03Oh, freaking Todd Gloria. Todd Gloria still? Yes.
SPEAKER_06You don't know this? No, I try to. Still? Still? I think this is his last term, though.
SPEAKER_03I thought we voted this year. Did we not vote?
SPEAKER_06We voted for the preliminaries.
SPEAKER_03Some people are we gonna vote in November for a new mayor?
SPEAKER_05And some people didn't.
SPEAKER_03You didn't vote, Annie? Who didn't vote?
SPEAKER_05Oh, I think you. I voted. I fully voted. You didn't vote.
SPEAKER_03I fully voted.
SPEAKER_05No, I took your ballot out of the line. No.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, you're picked it up. Annie, you're committing voter fraud?
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_03That sucks.
SPEAKER_05Reason 485 of why Annie could never run for office after being on the show.
SPEAKER_02She committed voter fraud. Annie's good man.
SPEAKER_05That clip would be all over bag. Are you really gonna vote for someone who admitted to commit to committing voter fraud?
SPEAKER_01She's gonna be committing voter fraud. I did it. Not too late to be in Congress for you. It's for sure too late.
SPEAKER_05It's way too late. Where are the bodies, Annie?
unknownYou know what?
SPEAKER_05There are people who are literally like out there, like, you know.
SPEAKER_06No, it'd be more like, would you really want to vote someone who did this when they were younger in lipstick videos? Oh my god. That's gonna ruin everyone's careers. No, I could never or you do a good good commercial and it's like vote for your favorite star.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, well.
SPEAKER_03And he's never getting that kitchen reno.
SPEAKER_01Like in society, Trump was like teasing about running for president. Because I'm watching Boston Legal, is there one of the things? Thank you. And it's it's based in the early 2000s. Here we go. Oh, here we go. Oh, he was never actually teasing. Whole production. Standby for dogs. In the show, they write in like, oh, Donald Trump might even this is 2008 when when it's when it's Obama versus McCain. And they're like, it's before the election, but they're like, Donald Trump even said he might he might run. And I was like, this is 2018. It was a punchline.
SPEAKER_03Even in 2015, it was kind of a punchline. They had him on SNL.
SPEAKER_05And I think in I can't remember if it was 2016 or yeah, I think it was 2016. That was when he got elected. No. 2016. 2016 was. 2016. Oh yeah, it was. Then it was 2012 that he um trademarked Make America Great Again.
SPEAKER_03Really? Yeah.
SPEAKER_05No, it was in the worksheam running.
SPEAKER_03I don't remember that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's back then. Like it was totally a meme for so long. And then like now sitting here in 2026, going, he's a two-term president of the United States.
SPEAKER_06It's still only his first year of his second term, too. Oh horrible is that.
SPEAKER_03Now it's actually the second. Is it? Yeah. Yeah. 2026.
SPEAKER_05I was on a date and I asked him the question of if you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would it be?
SPEAKER_03He didn't say Donald Trump, did he?
SPEAKER_05No, God no. But I said I said I probably would choose one of the like founding fathers, like you know, whoever, any of those crap bags, and then sit down and explain our current political climate. Because I think they would be like, What? Oh my gosh. They have British accents in my mind.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_05I know they probably didn't, but like still. Well, you you had some sort of weird accent. No way they're someone.
SPEAKER_03It was a mix between like British and like country accents. No, that was in the 1920s. No, that was the 1920s. I'm talking about the 1700s. No, they won't transatlantic. No, that was in the 1900s. She's like, yeah, but we had a president. I'm not talking about the trans presidents that we had. I'm talking about the way they were speaking.
SPEAKER_05Imagine that. That'd be awesome. That'd be great.
SPEAKER_01The whole have you seen the seen about the documentary that were like, they're like, A Blinken was probably gay.
SPEAKER_03Yes, okay, wait. Yes, he had a bestie and they were pen pounds.
SPEAKER_01And they stayed they shared the same bed.
SPEAKER_03They slept in the same bed. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Definitely gay.
SPEAKER_01Mary Tan. This is a comedian that like he basically dresses up as A-Blinkin. He's like, oh look, another documentary. And then it shows the trailer and he's like, wait, no, I'm not, I'm not gay. Oh my god, that's just my friend.
SPEAKER_05I really want to see the play O'Mary.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Me too. It looks good.
SPEAKER_05It looks so good.
SPEAKER_03I think um Bowen Yang is doing that cast.
SPEAKER_05Oh my gosh, you should totally. Oh, I really wanted to see. Well, I wanted to see the original casting, but I also wanted to see Maya Rudolph did it, and I was like, sh so funny.
SPEAKER_03There have been so many iconic ones already. Yes. Uh Titus Burgess, Colas Cola obviously originated it. Yeah, Maya Rudolph did it. I need to see that show.
SPEAKER_00Let's go see it.
SPEAKER_03Let's go see it and then fly back. Perfect. Let's go. Say hi to Zoran.
SPEAKER_05Do you think we could just like make an uh an appointment with his office? Oh for sure.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah, he'd be doing crazy stuff like that. He like jumped on this part. What was the thing he did for the Knicks? He like gave ever all the kids like free like no school or something. Or no bedtime. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'd be doing that. If you were okay, if you were running for president.
SPEAKER_03What would you do with your power? And it's mayor power, it's not presidential power. You can't pardon like Jeffrey Epstein or anything. Like it's just like, you know, street level. What would you fix about San Diego?
SPEAKER_05Okay, first, I know what Kara would say.
SPEAKER_03Say it, clean.
SPEAKER_05She would ban Joe Dreams. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh, arrest him. Oh yeah. Arrest Joe Dreams. Yes.
SPEAKER_04She'd execute Joe Dreams. You can't execute the mayor.
SPEAKER_06I'll execute his minion.
SPEAKER_03You can arrest him. You can arrest him.
SPEAKER_06She would banish him.
SPEAKER_03You can definitely banish him. Yeah, banish. Probably.
SPEAKER_06From the Banished.
SPEAKER_03Poor Joe Dreams. I would fix. You live in Joe Dreams. Oh, I would probably do something about Sports Arena, the whole Midway district.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, always. You'd that's your power carpet vomit.
SPEAKER_03Shoes.
SPEAKER_01I live in Joe Dreams.
SPEAKER_03He was on the new He was on K USI the other day.
SPEAKER_05He was on in a magazine recently. I saw him of like um like in San Diego Arts magazine.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, anybody can be in those they email you.
SPEAKER_01I saw the I saw the uh interview for K Sai. He sounds like a terrible interviewer's nightmare. Yeah, he is. He's like definitely a PR as well. But like the guy's like, so like you know, what would you say is your is your job? And he's like, he kind of stuck. He's like, I'm living Joe Dreams. He's like, you know what? You put it perfectly.
SPEAKER_06No, his thing that he's doing is TED Talk is coming to San Diego.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, because he does public speaking things.
SPEAKER_05Like uh we looked at King for Kara's birthday. Now we're probably joke. Uh huh. We were gonna pay for him to come to Kara's birthday. He does like speaking engagements at like elementary schools being like, you could kind of leave everyone.
SPEAKER_03Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's like not worth it for the death.
SPEAKER_04Why?
SPEAKER_00Because he's that she stands on business on Joe Dreams.
SPEAKER_06He's he's annoying.
SPEAKER_01He's very annoying. Even for the bit, you don't think it's kind of funny? Nope. It's a little funny.
SPEAKER_06Eight years, John. Okay, so eight years on Pod Squad that I had to pass him.
SPEAKER_05Mayoral power would ban Joe Dreams. Ryan, what would your what would you use? Um the Midway district.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I definitely would start there. First. I'd probably um close all the beaches for everyone but me.
SPEAKER_05Like, you're not like helping people. You're not giving like a little kid no more.
SPEAKER_03I only have this power for one day. If I'm the mayor for one day, I don't have like a long plan or anything. Just close the beach.
SPEAKER_05For me.
SPEAKER_03For me. Um and then yeah, carpet bomb.
SPEAKER_05I'm surprised you wouldn't reopen the OB pier.
SPEAKER_03I'd bring back Village Kitchen. Ugh. That'd be awesome. Yeah, open the pier. Yeah. Let people walk around on it.
SPEAKER_04Like, who cares? Just have waivers. I feel like it'd crumble.
SPEAKER_03Have waivers to sign. Yeah. Like I'm assuming the risk. Yeah. If you fall off the pier, whatever.
SPEAKER_06Like, just let us go back. You know what would happen?
SPEAKER_03I want to go fishing.
SPEAKER_06I think if we opened the OBPR right now, Bird City. Well, yes, it is Bird City. People would walk on it and start ripping things off of it.
SPEAKER_03Sure. A little bit of momentum. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's a good thing. Totally sweet.
SPEAKER_03And you could sell them.
SPEAKER_05And you know what's crazy? Is it going to be save money on demolishing it?
SPEAKER_03I don't think it's ever coming back.
SPEAKER_06Save money on demolishing it. The plan is demolish it and rebuild it. Bit by bit.
SPEAKER_03The plan is not a plan because it requires like billions of dollars. Like maybe not billions. Maybe it's hundreds of millions. But it's like not gonna happen in our lifetime, probably.
SPEAKER_06It's definitely a mill to get rid of it, for sure.
SPEAKER_05Well, not if you let people on and just let them start destroying it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, grassroots it.
SPEAKER_05Oh, all those wooden ribs. Um, what do you call that?
SPEAKER_01They just put a uh crowdsourcing in front of the front of the gate. Get to work, boys.
SPEAKER_06Oh weird. Um they already took off all the like mementos that they'd think people would buy. So like all the stuff that was in the cafe. Right.
SPEAKER_03The signage and John, mayor for the day. What's your first order of business?
SPEAKER_01That's a great question. That's a great question. Consider it.
SPEAKER_03Consider it. Think about it. Any public works you want to do. Whoa. Show some love for Khalil.
SPEAKER_06Which street? Any any street?
SPEAKER_01Next to Tony and Trevor. Yes, right there by.
SPEAKER_03Right down there. J Street, probably. Probably down there. K Street is now called Khalil Street.
SPEAKER_01Actually, I want G to be changed because G is the one you take to go home. G means go home. So I'm gonna change that because then everyone has to use it to leave. Green. And there's like, oh yeah, it's just Green Street.
SPEAKER_06When I first started driving, what a nice honor. I would be downtown. That was the first piece of advice I was told about driving downtown. G for go home. G is for a go home.
SPEAKER_03If you live in East County, maybe.
SPEAKER_06If you if you want to go on the the back to OB.
SPEAKER_01I would rename a lot of streets, probably.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, sure.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06That's our idea. Hey, they changed the side. Can I they change that in real quick?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna Caesar Chavez change little house.
SPEAKER_06That those street signs got changed so fast.
SPEAKER_03They did, huh?
SPEAKER_06Now it's um Chicano Park um drive. Now it's Chicano Park.
SPEAKER_03Chicano Parkway.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, listen, like San Diego's a vibe. San Diego's like, nah, we we have no nothing named after no diddlers. No.
SPEAKER_03That's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_05No diddlers. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03We're all good on everything else.
SPEAKER_01Well, actually, my coworker, he's he's a pastor, and he's he he has a philosophy that he doesn't use quotes in his sermons from any people that are still alive today.
SPEAKER_05Because you never know what's gonna come out later.
SPEAKER_01Cause Chavez is dead, though. Caesar Chavez was I know, but I'm just saying in general, like like people there are people who like take precaution. I think that's pretty safe.
SPEAKER_03I think once you're dead, I mean that's a pretty specific case.
SPEAKER_01That's very I I wasn't even really talking about that, but I'm saying in general, like it's interesting. Never meet your heroes, right? Yeah, never meet your heroes. I heard Khalil Green is actually pretty. I guess. Damn. He's he's uh he does he play music now.
SPEAKER_03Right after we named the street after him. Tony Gwynn. Oh no, that was horrible.
SPEAKER_06He he was like kind of the same same look as Khalil Green, like the blonde hair. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Recently or back in the day?
SPEAKER_06Like at the beginning of my pod squad stuff, everyone thought he was so cute.
SPEAKER_03Long hair?
SPEAKER_06No, just like shaggy shaggy, like blonde hair. Long hair Will Myers?
SPEAKER_02Will Myers! Will Myers does he have long hair? He didn't have long hair.
SPEAKER_06He had like at one point he had like shaggy blonde hair.
SPEAKER_03What's wrong with Will Myers? What he was a poo-poo.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. He wasn't very nice, I heard. Never meet your heroes. I could tell that.
SPEAKER_05We have that for asking. If I was mayor for the day, all road construction would be finished in one day. You're finishing it tonight.
SPEAKER_03Let's take all of our power and finish it all up.
SPEAKER_05You're finishing it all tonight. One and done. Get it done. I'm sick of a year-long plan to rip up things two nights a week. No, you're finishing it.
SPEAKER_03Solve two problems at once. Go downtown. Round up everybody that's standing around. You know.
SPEAKER_05Hey, I'm gonna give you a job. I'm gonna pay you.
SPEAKER_03Let's get to work. Let's get to it. And it doesn't need to be good work, it just needs to be done tonight.
SPEAKER_05Yes, it's not a good thing. And it will fall apart in a year and a half anyway. So let's just get it done.
SPEAKER_01I feel like the session should be like Disneyland. You know how Disneyland they start in one part of the park and they all year long they paint through the whole thing and they start over. I feel like roads should be like that in some of these major cities. Hey, start in one side and work your way to the other, fix the roads, and then by the way, when you're done, come back around. Let's re-fricking painting.
SPEAKER_03I kind of think they might do that. I think it's like a round robin situation where they're like, okay, this year we're gonna work on this road. Next year we're gonna work on that road.
SPEAKER_05So the city you submit to the city a quote for we can do it for this much money and we'll take this much time. Oh yeah, well, our company can do it for this much money and take this much time. And then the city makes no sense. The city will take whatever bid that they want.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_05And then that's why some of them are just like, oh, actually, actually it's um actually it's gonna take longer. Um actually.
SPEAKER_03Right, because it's government money and they're like, who cares?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they're like, okay, whatever. And so then when it's done, it's like, well, we don't want those people getting let's start new bids.
SPEAKER_03And it's like, oh my god.
SPEAKER_05Why don't why don't that's how I doesn't the city that's not how it works, Jacob Nichols, if you want to call in like why wouldn't the company want to do it on time and under budget so that they can get hired again?
SPEAKER_01You don't make money that way.
SPEAKER_05You don't want to get on on time and under budget. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01Well, I'm just saying, like on time and on budget. You know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_06Like long time. Little budget. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03I think you should be doing good work and charging a fair amount for it.
SPEAKER_00I agree. Hot take. Hot take.
SPEAKER_03Come on. Come on. This one goes out to all the construction companies in the county. Come on.
SPEAKER_05Hey, sponsored by construction. Sponsored by Miguel and Christmas.
SPEAKER_03I feel like that's a reasonable thing, you know?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, I think so. I have one construction company I use.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_05RJ L. Um, that's Jacob's company. Yeah, Jacobs.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Yeah, you have shouted him out a couple of times.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because you know, business. I what if Phil Jr. needs some construction?
SPEAKER_03Phil J. PJ!
SPEAKER_05He's RJ Nichols.
SPEAKER_03Shout out.
SPEAKER_05Um, my favorite thing is that Jacob and Ridley listen to this podcast. Yeah, they'll hear it. And so does Phil.
SPEAKER_03They're gonna have to listen to them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and they definitely sponsor us. They do sponsor us.
SPEAKER_01Very good shout out. They do.
SPEAKER_03It's 298 episodes. You really think we're not gonna shout out some of our friends along the way?
SPEAKER_04Oh, how cute. Sorry, squirrel.
SPEAKER_03I just heard something motorcycle going by.
SPEAKER_05Um, May for May, I feel like we're solving a lot of problems. I think. We could put we could solve two birds with one stone.
SPEAKER_03We could solve two birds with one stone.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, while we're fixing the roads, we'll just throw out the street sign. I would like for every restaurant to have a public restroom. Is that not the case? No.
SPEAKER_04What do you mean like that? You have to buy something to use it.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Yes. I think most restaurants do have a customer.
SPEAKER_06No, not sometimes no. They won't. In your current state of how you are right. That's in my current state.
SPEAKER_03Who have you been banned? What bathroom have you been banned from?
SPEAKER_06Well, you know, when you walk your IBS state. Sorry, I'll take it back. Yeah. I think every restaurant or cafe or whatever should have a public restroom.
SPEAKER_03I'll go even further. I think there should be public restrooms more readily available everywhere, not just in restaurants.
SPEAKER_06Just put them out on the bottom. Because have you ever been to a cafe where there's no bathroom? Yeah. Yeah, I have. No. Or a store where there's no bathroom. You've been to a store. Okay, you have a restaurant to use the bathroom one time. What do you mean? Were you talking about the dominoes? Yes. When we were hanging out in dominoes, yeah, yeah. They should have a restroom.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_06Or we went to the bank the other day, and I literally I was like, hey, can I use a restroom? Can I use a restroom? And he goes, Oh, well, they're for employees only.
SPEAKER_02They let you use that bathroom. Yeah, because I'm pregnant. Okay, so what are you saying? Kind of cool though.
SPEAKER_06They should have a public a a bank, a nice bank, should have a public restroom for their own.
SPEAKER_05I don't know about public because then you got the bank robbers coming in and they're hiding in the bathroom. They're putting on their ski mask in the bathroom. They're coming in.
SPEAKER_03I guess who does it fall on like us having to go to the bathroom in public? Who should be responsible for that? Like, we pay a lot of money in taxes. The government should put little bathrooms around. Everywhere. They're even talking about rolling back the bathrooms that are down at the beach. They're talking about just closing them all. To save money.
SPEAKER_06On what?
SPEAKER_03On what what?
SPEAKER_05Like what are they saving money on though? State funds. Someone cleaning it? Someone cleaning it.
SPEAKER_03Like the water and the power and the infrastructure. That all costs money.
SPEAKER_05But that okay.
unknownSure.
SPEAKER_03Say it, clean it.
SPEAKER_05So I was in Ocean Beach the other day at like at night, and there was, you know, a a woman who was using the restroom in the middle of the street. Sure. Yep. And part of it is obviously like, oh gosh, gross. But also like, okay, it's at night. All the public restrooms are closed. Sure. Like and these people live on the street. They have to go to the bathroom.
SPEAKER_03Especially because like they're not actively like San Diego's not really trying to help them. It's not like, oh, we're gonna open more shelters or we're gonna XYZ. So they're just like comp fully complacent in this problem of like unhoused people just around San Diego. So yeah, you have to like support them with a bathroom or something at least. I don't know.
SPEAKER_05And I'll say like San Diego does more than other cities do.
SPEAKER_03Sure.
SPEAKER_05But it also it's like the upkeep and like continual government grants. And like there's uh an area of town called Tent City, which is like a good thing.
SPEAKER_06Which I've moved around so many times.
SPEAKER_05It's like a government funded like you know, section of town that has like rows and rows and rows of tents. And they have a restroom where it's like a trailer with like showers and a restroom, and I think they might even have like laundry. It's like ordered and they have like an outdoor kitchen area where they can cook their own meals.
SPEAKER_02That's great.
SPEAKER_05But it's like they have one of those, and that is probably costing the city a million dollars to have a key.
SPEAKER_06Because it's a giant area.
SPEAKER_05And like, yeah, the land and the usage and keeping it clean, and you know, trying to keep it like and patrolling it or whatever, and it's like, okay, but like why is it costing a million dollars? Can we not find another way to do this cheaper? And also, like, let's get to the problem.
SPEAKER_03Like I think we pay so much in taxes every single year. Like, spend that money on that. Spend it on that. How much like why is there never every year taxes go up, the price of everything goes up every year, and every year there's never any money for infrastructure in this city. I want to see where the money is.
SPEAKER_05I want to follow the money. Where is the parking meter money going? Where's the parking meter money going? It goes back straight to that city. Where's the parking? Okay, downtown San Diego. Show me like I'm paying $35.
SPEAKER_03Don't they do a yearly like thing where they're like, here's where our money goes? Yeah, we should really tell they should pull that out.
SPEAKER_06I'm sure, I'm sure the new downtown prices are going towards homeless.
SPEAKER_03Okay, we talked about going to a a public forum. We should go to one of those things.
SPEAKER_05We should go to a public forum. I'll pass. Sure. You guys can go.
SPEAKER_03I'm in. You afraid Joe Dreams is gonna be there?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. She's really good. He does before.
SPEAKER_03He do be going to those things. Talking about how you know the public should be living Joe Dreams. And they should. And we do. And we will. As soon as the rows get finished.
SPEAKER_05Didn't they um didn't they roll back the parking meters in the like the paid parking at Balboa Park? They did.
SPEAKER_03Balboa Park. We did enough public outcry did make them roll back on that.
SPEAKER_06Vandalism.
SPEAKER_03And yeah, of course. Oh, we should talk about that. Those uh public cameras that people are knocking down. Have you guys been seeing that? Yeah, the block cams. We'll talk about that in the post show. Everybody, this show is brought to you by the Nichols. Patreon.

SPEAKER_05Okay, I'm I pulled up the numbers.
SPEAKER_03You didn't say it, Kara.
SPEAKER_06Well, the podcast comes.
SPEAKER_05The pri the primary repairs that our parking meter money goes to, potholes and street light.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so they're stealing the money. Because nobody's freaking fixing any of the potholes. Are you kidding me?
SPEAKER_06Not single drive.
SPEAKER_05They said they fixed 3,000 potholes last year. Yeah, freaking right.
