I lost my uh my wallet. 00:03:14.159 --> 00:03:23.199 And during the hunt, I gained some coins, some gum, and the benefit of a clean car. 00:03:24.240 --> 00:03:28.319 What was initially loss turned out for gain. 00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:47.039 Another time I lost my keys and uh I began to hunt for where they were, and and I found these old photos that were the impetus to reigniting some relationships with old friends that distance had allowed to go silent. 00:03:48.240 --> 00:03:51.919 In the loss, I was led to experience gain. 00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:58.960 But far more important is this perspective we hold in our life in Christ. 00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:20.079 I want us to see this morning through this letter and a passage in Philippians is that when it comes to our life as followers of Christ, a mature faith is led to count even loss as gain compared with the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:04:21.120 --> 00:04:27.040 And so in this passage that we just read, Paul here is writing to uh the believers in Philippi. 00:04:27.199 --> 00:04:38.000 He is and he is he's writing to them because they've been key partners in his ministry, and uh and they've sought to uh advance the gospel. 00:04:38.240 --> 00:04:45.120 They've sought to come alongside him in this advance, and he's concerned that they continue to press on. 00:04:46.399 --> 00:04:50.079 They were all, by all accounts, a joyful people. 00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:57.360 Uh, one of the key themes in this letter is over and over the use of the emphasis on joy. 00:04:57.600 --> 00:05:04.079 Uh the word joy or rejoice uh takes place uh sixteen times throughout the letter. 00:05:04.399 --> 00:05:14.240 And in their joy, they had given kindly to Paul and wanted to contribute toward his needs, even though he was in prison. 00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:17.600 These were beloved brothers and sisters. 00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:24.160 But they were also people who had experienced themselves severe affliction and difficulty. 00:05:24.639 --> 00:05:38.800 And as one of the churches in Macedonia, we know that they had given to uh a collection that uh Paul had taken up to be given to those who had were facing persecution in Jerusalem. 00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:54.639 And so that actually begged Paul when he was taking up this collection for the ability to participate in this initiative, to help in relieving the burdens of these brothers and sisters in Jerusalem. 00:05:54.800 --> 00:06:01.680 They had given out of their own very limited means, and some of them even beyond their means for this cause. 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:24.000 And so this church, even though they're afflicted themselves, even though they faced impoverished circumstances, because of the abundance of joy, and because of the great grace that was upon them, through the empowering of the Holy Spirit, they gave willingly. 00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:33.680 First, giving themselves to the Lord, and then discerning that this was something that he was in, they then gave to this relief effort. 00:06:34.560 --> 00:06:39.759 And so there was this great joy in the Lord that they possessed, even in the midst of loss. 00:06:40.319 --> 00:06:48.720 And so, in all of this, the apostle Paul is writing to them to say, don't allow anyone to rob you of this joy that you possess. 00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:53.680 Continue to go on rejoicing in the Lord. 00:06:55.360 --> 00:07:00.800 Because there are people around who want to rob you of that joy. 00:07:02.639 --> 00:07:19.920 And so, being the shepherd that Paul is, he warns them that there are these Judaizers who were promoting a different message than the one that he had proclaimed to them and shared with them, and was the source and fuel to their joy. 00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:34.319 When I was in high school, we had an award, it was called the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and there were certain things that you had to fulfill in order to get this award, and one of them was uh taking a collection up for charity. 00:07:34.879 --> 00:07:45.600 And as we went from house to house uh asking if people wanted to give to this, um, I was I was glad for the signs that said beware of the dog. 00:07:46.639 --> 00:07:49.519 Because those were the houses we weren't going to collect at. 00:07:49.680 --> 00:07:51.920 We we just avoided those places altogether. 00:07:52.160 --> 00:08:00.240 And I'm sure if you've ever had a paper route or something like that or had to deliver something at someone's house, you were glad for that sign also. 00:08:00.959 --> 00:08:09.839 The point is that a warning is there to bring heightened clarity where the potential for danger lurks. 00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:15.360 And so Paul goes on to describe these people because of this warning. 00:08:15.439 --> 00:08:28.560 And what's interesting here is that in describing these people, he doesn't stop writing only to then get out a sketchpad and try to try to sketch a portrait of these people and their physical features. 00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:32.480 We notice that he describes them in terms of their worship. 00:08:33.440 --> 00:08:34.720 And that's important. 00:08:35.039 --> 00:08:35.919 Why so? 00:08:36.399 --> 00:08:41.519 Well, because what we believe will come out in the way that we worship. 00:08:42.080 --> 00:08:46.159 It will come out in the way that we relate to and serve God. 00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:56.799 These were people who believed that to be perfected, you needed to add something to faith in Christ. 00:08:57.360 --> 00:09:04.480 They were saying that to be in the favor of God, you also needed to observe the legal requirement of circumcision. 00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:10.240 And in this case, it was therefore Christ plus circumcision. 00:09:10.559 --> 00:09:14.879 Only then were you truly under his covenant like the Jews. 00:09:15.919 --> 00:09:19.120 Now, on one hand, there is some appeal to that. 00:09:19.440 --> 00:09:26.480 I mean, circumcision was the sign given to God's people in order to set them apart from the other nations. 00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:37.279 But even nature reminds us that some of the most beautiful, some of the most appealing things to our senses can often be the most deadly. 00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:49.840 I was reading this week of these beautiful plants with names like uh lily of the valley, uh sago palm, and golden dewdrop. 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:54.159 And what you notice about these plants is they're appealing, they're very beautiful. 00:09:54.879 --> 00:10:01.679 But the truth is they hide behind the allure, this hidden danger of being highly toxic. 00:10:02.399 --> 00:10:08.879 And like these plants, even though this teaching had a potential appeal to it, it was toxic. 00:10:09.679 --> 00:10:19.120 Because it undermined the gospel by placing a subtle shift back on an emphasis on the flesh and away from the spirit. 00:10:20.559 --> 00:10:25.039 Now, Paul in his letter to the Romans is he's clear about this. 00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:27.440 He's clear what it means to be a Jew. 00:10:27.679 --> 00:10:36.879 He writes this He says, No one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. 00:10:37.360 --> 00:10:46.480 But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. 00:10:46.720 --> 00:10:50.159 His praise is not from man, but from God. 00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:52.399 And so notice the emphasis here. 00:10:52.559 --> 00:11:09.759 The emphasis is that true can true circumcision, what it means to truly be a Jew, is something related to the work of the Spirit that takes place in one's heart inwardly and not merely something external. 00:11:10.240 --> 00:11:17.919 And so his point is those Jews who were promoting this teaching were more acting like Gentiles. 00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:25.200 And that even though these believers were Gentiles, they were actually the true circumcision. 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:39.440 You see, the truth is that whether it be the medium of false teaching or otherwise, what's true is that the flesh is always trying to assert itself. 00:11:40.320 --> 00:11:47.360 It has its own set of desires and loves, and it's often try found trying to take center stage. 00:11:48.080 --> 00:12:03.279 You know, selfish ambition, self-indulgence, my interests, my glory, my righteousness, all of these things are of the flesh, and the flesh wants to put these things forward. 00:12:04.240 --> 00:12:16.399 But you see, when we come to know Jesus and the Holy Spirit comes to indwell us, like what often happens beneath the surface of the earth, a fault line emerges within us. 00:12:17.840 --> 00:12:24.879 The Holy Spirit's presence brings with it, with him, a resistance to the flesh. 00:12:26.320 --> 00:12:39.519 And this resistance, you see, is part of the Spirit's conviction to work within us, to draw us away from the flesh and the flesh's desires and loves, and leads us to glory in Jesus. 00:12:40.320 --> 00:12:43.440 His loves, his desires. 00:12:44.639 --> 00:12:46.960 That's a sign that you perceive the Spirit. 00:12:47.759 --> 00:12:50.320 It's the floodlight ministry of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:50.559 --> 00:12:56.000 There is a new power at work within us to bring us to glory in Jesus. 00:12:56.639 --> 00:13:03.600 And none of that, you see, gives us reason to have confidence in the flesh or in our own performance. 00:13:04.480 --> 00:13:06.320 Because it's all of grace. 00:13:07.759 --> 00:13:21.600 That's the vital distinction that needs to be made here when Paul talks about us, the way in which he worships, and the Philippians were worshiping, and the worship of those who were promoting this confidence in the flesh. 00:13:21.759 --> 00:13:24.240 The flesh, you see, can't do any of that. 00:13:25.440 --> 00:13:32.639 And so Paul masterfully sets out to topple this false teaching from his own experience and conversion. 00:13:32.799 --> 00:13:43.519 He's like, all right, if I were to indulge the flesh, like they do, I would have things to put confidence in also. 00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:49.759 If someone wants to play that game, I have more reason to play that game. 00:13:50.639 --> 00:13:58.159 And he gets out as accounting pad, as it were, and it's like he has one column that says loss and another one that says gain. 00:13:58.960 --> 00:14:00.399 Two columns. 00:14:01.519 --> 00:14:04.240 And he begins by listing off these various things. 00:14:04.399 --> 00:14:07.840 He says, Have I mentioned my flawless pedigree? 00:14:08.559 --> 00:14:12.320 Have I mentioned my accomplishments under the law? 00:14:12.480 --> 00:14:14.720 I'm glad you asked, let me tell you of them. 00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:18.960 For starters, he says, I'm a Jew. 00:14:19.360 --> 00:14:23.919 No one can question my lineage as one of the people of God. 00:14:24.159 --> 00:14:28.559 I was circumcised on the eighth day, which was what the law stipulated. 00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:29.360 Done. 00:14:29.600 --> 00:14:30.159 Check. 00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:32.799 I'm from the tribe of Benjamin, check. 00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:35.600 I'm as Jewish as they come. 00:14:36.639 --> 00:14:38.720 I have a flawless pedigree. 00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:41.039 You want to talk about externals? 00:14:41.279 --> 00:14:44.320 I was one who belonged to the covenant people of God. 00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:49.919 And not only that, he says I had a good I have a good resume. 00:14:51.200 --> 00:14:58.240 Let's begin with the fact that I belonged to the upper ishkelong of lawkeepers, the Pharisees. 00:14:59.360 --> 00:15:14.639 Not only that, my zeal was such that I was trained in one of the most strict of schools, so that I wasn't merely a keeper of the law, but I'd progressed so far above everyone else that I was an enforcer of the law. 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:18.720 I was meticulous, blameless. 00:15:20.720 --> 00:15:33.759 And we get a little more insight into the reinforcement of this confidence when we consider that Paul got rewarded for his efforts in seeking to establish his own righteousness. 00:15:35.519 --> 00:15:38.399 He was rewarded with a sense of belonging. 00:15:38.960 --> 00:15:41.679 He was rewarded with promotion. 00:15:43.039 --> 00:15:46.240 He was rewarded for his moral superiority. 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:54.080 Who doesn't feel good about putting everyone else in their place and not being under the microscope of anyone else? 00:15:55.039 --> 00:15:57.919 In his mind, all of this was gain. 00:15:59.279 --> 00:16:08.080 And I think when we stop to consider this a little further, we see why confidence in our own righteousness has a certain appeal to it. 00:16:08.799 --> 00:16:14.399 There's a sense in which seeking to establish our own righteousness can be rewarding. 00:16:15.600 --> 00:16:21.200 If you have a strong will and you have a moral compass, it can yield you many benefits. 00:16:21.600 --> 00:16:24.639 It can be rewarded with job promotion. 00:16:25.360 --> 00:16:28.639 It can be rewarded with career opportunities. 00:16:28.879 --> 00:16:30.879 It can be rewarded with a sense of honor. 00:16:30.960 --> 00:16:34.720 It can be rewarded with respectability, a better paycheck. 00:16:35.679 --> 00:16:43.759 All of this can bring about and reinforce the idea that the pursuit of establishing one's own righteousness is gain. 00:16:45.519 --> 00:16:50.559 That we are doing the right thing and that God is rewarding us for it. 00:16:52.480 --> 00:17:10.000 And yet I think we begin to see beneath all of this and get a little small glimpse into the heart of Saul of Tarsus when we see this violent streak that was underneath all of this pursuit for his own righteousness. 00:17:10.240 --> 00:17:12.640 And how that began to take shape in his life. 00:17:12.880 --> 00:17:17.200 For example, in Acts, right, we read of this his teacher Gamaliel. 00:17:17.440 --> 00:17:31.759 And at this time, Gamaliel, his teacher, is surrounded with other rulers, and they're trying to figure out what to do with the apostles who are teaching in Jesus' name and causing quite the stir. 00:17:33.039 --> 00:17:39.039 And Gamaliel speaks up at this point in time and he advises against using violence. 00:17:39.279 --> 00:17:43.680 He says, Man, if this is of God, this will succeed. 00:17:44.240 --> 00:17:47.519 However, if it's of man, it won't succeed. 00:17:47.839 --> 00:17:53.039 It will actually come to be short-lived because we've seen this play out before. 00:17:53.759 --> 00:17:58.400 But you see, we need to be careful that we're not found to be opposing God. 00:17:58.960 --> 00:18:02.960 I mean, that was Paul's teacher's advice. 00:18:03.680 --> 00:18:07.359 And the someone who was from the strict form of Judaism. 00:18:08.079 --> 00:18:10.960 But Saul's approach was different. 00:18:11.440 --> 00:18:13.359 Saul's was a hostile one. 00:18:14.240 --> 00:18:19.279 And I think it gives us a little bit of a window into some of the anger that just lay under the surface. 00:18:21.039 --> 00:18:24.960 You see, that's the often the sign of a self-righteous heart. 00:18:25.359 --> 00:18:31.440 There's usually sustained anger right under the surface, driven by the flesh. 00:18:31.839 --> 00:18:36.799 The focus, you see, is what I'm doing, how hard I'm trying. 00:18:37.359 --> 00:18:40.160 These things are focused on self. 00:18:40.319 --> 00:18:43.039 And so all of this was playing out. 00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:48.640 And Stephen begins to testify to Jesus being Lord. 00:18:48.960 --> 00:18:58.160 And as they begin to express their fury at what Stephen is saying, at that moment Stephen is led to see the glory of Jesus. 00:18:58.400 --> 00:19:09.759 And the clouds were parted, and he's able to see Christ at the right hand of God the Father, and he begins to testify to what the Holy Spirit is showing him. 00:19:10.400 --> 00:19:13.440 And this just enrages them even further. 00:19:13.680 --> 00:19:19.039 And so they come at him and they grab him and they drag him out and they begin to stone him. 00:19:19.200 --> 00:19:35.680 And yet we remember that while Stephen was on his knees being stoned, in that moment, in the face of great hostility and loss, Stephen cries out with a loud voice and he says, Lord, do not hold this sin against them. 00:19:38.400 --> 00:19:50.720 And we can perhaps read between the lines here and wonder if Paul didn't at some point see himself as an answer to that prayer of Stephen, who loved even his enemy. 00:19:52.240 --> 00:20:03.359 So that even Jesus revealed himself to him on the Damascus Road, he was immediately led to see that he had been dreadfully wrong. 00:20:04.799 --> 00:20:12.720 That even in all his striving, even in all his zeal, even with his Jewish pedigree, all of this was in fact loss. 00:20:12.880 --> 00:20:18.799 And Stephen possessed something that he didn't, and it was to his gain. 00:20:21.920 --> 00:20:24.160 And I wonder if that's been true of your experience. 00:20:24.319 --> 00:20:30.319 Perhaps it has, where you didn't know Jesus, but you knew someone who did. 00:20:31.599 --> 00:20:40.880 And their testimony was a life that gave you the sense that they possessed something that you didn't, something you lacked. 00:20:42.160 --> 00:20:46.000 And the Lord used that in awakening you to your true need. 00:20:48.000 --> 00:20:57.759 And you see, it's for that reason that Paul, right at this moment, having built up reasons for confidence in the flesh, flips the script. 00:20:58.079 --> 00:21:04.480 And he says, Yes, although I had these reasons to put confidence in the flesh, they were all loss. 00:21:05.039 --> 00:21:08.240 And so you so listen to his great reversal here. 00:21:08.400 --> 00:21:25.519 You see this halting but he says, but, but whatever gain I had, that is, in my upbringing and my achievements, I counted it as loss for the sake of Christ. 00:21:27.039 --> 00:21:33.039 In other words, when Jesus came to meet him on the Damascus road, it changed everything for him. 00:21:33.279 --> 00:21:39.119 Because in that moment he came to see that when Jesus said to him, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? 00:21:39.519 --> 00:21:46.240 He was doing so because Jesus had fixed his heart upon him. 00:21:48.319 --> 00:21:59.440 That despite his every sin, despite his every fall, his every evil, his persecuting even of the church, that Jesus. 00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:08.720 Came to him and opened up to him a way, a new way that was opened to him through his aturing love. 00:22:09.920 --> 00:22:26.880 And so he says, he says, even though I had this pedigree, even though I had these accomplishments, at that moment I knew, I knew these things to be lost in comparison to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ. 00:22:29.279 --> 00:22:42.960 And the truth is that like Saul, you realize that the when you realize the antidote to being bad is not just being good, you're on the brink of this new life. 00:22:44.559 --> 00:22:52.400 When you realize the antidote to being bad is not just being good, you're on the brink of this new life. 00:22:52.559 --> 00:22:53.519 What do I mean? 00:22:53.759 --> 00:23:06.319 What I mean is this, that the person who tries to remedy their being bad with new resolve that they're going to try better next time is still caught in this trap of works righteousness. 00:23:06.559 --> 00:23:06.960 Right? 00:23:07.039 --> 00:23:13.839 The only difference is that they've added a temporary feeling to feeling a little bit more zealous for a period of time. 00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:16.559 But even that waxes cold. 00:23:19.359 --> 00:23:22.799 In the end, you see, it's just another form of self-salvation. 00:23:25.039 --> 00:23:27.440 One that tries a little harder. 00:23:28.720 --> 00:23:34.079 And at the root, you're still attempting to gain acceptance with God by your own works. 00:23:34.400 --> 00:23:44.319 But you see, this new life comes in when you realize that any attempt and every attempt to make yourself acceptable to God is rubbish. 00:23:46.720 --> 00:23:49.599 The Apostle Paul uses this term, he says it's dung. 00:23:50.960 --> 00:23:53.279 It's loss, loss, loss. 00:23:55.200 --> 00:24:12.400 Gain, you see, is only found when the heart humbly turns away from looking to sin and self, the flesh altogether, and we embrace a righteousness found entirely outside of ourselves in Jesus Christ. 00:24:12.799 --> 00:24:14.240 And then we fly to him. 00:24:15.440 --> 00:24:19.279 And we rest in that perfect righteousness. 00:24:20.079 --> 00:24:22.000 And we sleep like a baby. 00:24:33.599 --> 00:24:44.720 The essence of sin is man substituting himself for God, while the essence of salvation is God substituting himself for man. 00:24:45.680 --> 00:24:52.160 Man asserts himself against God and puts himself where only God deserves to be. 00:24:52.640 --> 00:25:00.079 God sacrifices himself for man and puts himself where only man deserves to be. 00:25:29.839 --> 00:25:34.240 That you bring judgment day forward to today. 00:25:35.599 --> 00:25:44.720 And you know that in receiving his righteousness and looking away from your own, you can be made right with God That's the heart of the gospel and the fountain of joy. 00:26:23.839 --> 00:26:30.400 Have you come yet to live in this righteousness and knowledge of God's complete acceptance of you? 00:26:31.440 --> 00:26:38.480 As long as you're, see, as long as you're just moral, you'll never be happy and know this joy of the Holy Spirit. 00:26:41.680 --> 00:26:44.480 It's something you're never going to there to condemn you, but to grow you. 00:27:26.480 --> 00:27:36.480 That Christ was willing to impute his righteousness to your account and take upon himself your unrighteousness, upon himself on the cross. 00:27:38.480 --> 00:27:48.480 But you see, there's more to it than what Paul's saying, because he's saying it's not only an imputed righteousness, it's also an imparted righteousness.
