0:00: Welcome back to another episode from Betfair Trading Community.com podcast where we dive deep into the strategies, tips and insights to elevate your Betfair trading game.
0:10: I'm your host Martin, and today we are exploring a topic that's been gaining a lot of attention in the Betfair trading community.
0:18: One that I haven't really covered properly in a podcast before, so I thought this was a really good topic to do.
0:23: And we are gonna look at Betfair trading in football leagues around the world.
0:27: So whether you're a seasoned trader or you're just getting started, understanding which football leagues offer the best opportunities can make a significant difference in your Betfair trading success.
0:39: So Why focus on which football leagues to trade for Betfair trading?
0:45: Well, football obviously is the world's most popular sport.
0:49: There's so many matches, there's so many bet fair trading markets, and most importantly, there's lots of money to be bet on.
0:57: There's lots of money to be traded on football, and of course we crave that liquidity as Betfair traders, we crave markets where the money is available.
1:08: Today we'll break down the top football leagues that are ideal for Betfair trading and explore why they stand out.
1:16: Let's kick things off with our number one league.
1:19: Do do do do, pretty obvious, right?
1:22: Pretty obvious to most of you, the English Premier League.
1:26: Perhaps the most recognized football league globally, the EPL as they like to call it, offers unparalleled high liquidity, meaning there's always plenty of action available in the market.
1:39: You're never not gonna be able to get a bet on if you're betting, let's say you're betting match odds, there's probably gonna be millions matched by the end of the game if it's a TV game.
1:48: This high liquidity translate to tighter spreads in the odds.
1:52: And smoother transactions, making it easier for you to enter and exit trades without significant price slippage.
2:00: With 20 teams competing in 38 games each season, the Premier League provides a wealth of trading opportunities every single week for 38 games.
2:11: So, you know, let's say they play a few midweek ones, maybe 32 weeks a year.
2:15: Plus, the extensive media coverage ensures you have access to up to date information on team news, injuries, form and other critical factors that can influence match outcomes.
2:27: The competitive nature of the Premier League also brings a level of volatility, creating numerous opportunities for both pre-match and in-play trading strategies.
2:39: Now, when you think of the Premier League.
2:42: This is obviously the big one, right?
2:44: This is where huge, huge money is bet and traded in general, which is obviously good for us.
2:52: You're not going to have a problem getting your bets on, getting your bets matched.
2:57: , and when you look at some of the smaller leagues, like, I mean, you know, let's go really small, Indonesia, you know, sometimes you're sitting there waiting and hoping that someone's going to take your bet.
3:07: That's not gonna happen in the Premier League.
3:10: You're gonna get odds, and they are the odds, whether you like them or not, whether you wanna take those odds or not, they will be the odds because the market will be liquid.
3:18: , so the Premier League is a good league for trading.
3:22: Let's get to the number 2.
3:24: So the second league that we're gonna talk about today is Spanish La Liga.
3:30: Spain's equivalent to our Premier League, featuring powerhouse teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and, you know, recently Atletico Madrid, La Liga matches.
3:42: Draw significant global attention, again, ensuring high liquidity on Betphro, you're gonna hear a bit of a theme regarding that, but it's because it's so important.
3:52: The consistent scheduling and predictable match timings allow for effective planning and strategy implementation.
3:59: Moreover, the technical and tactical gameplay characteristics of La Liga matches lead to dynamic market movements, whether it's fluctu.
4:08: odds or changing market sentiments, the Lega provides a fertile ground for various trading approaches.
4:15: Comprehensive statistics and analysis are readily available, aiding you and making informed trading decisions.
4:23: Now, Actually, what what's interesting in that last point there is talking about, you know, actually having the stats readily available.
4:32: Now at Betfair Tradingcommunity.com, if you're not a member already, you should know that all the leagues I'm covering today, all these major leagues are covered in our software.
4:41: So you could go and check out the comprehensive stats right now this minute for the games that are coming up in these big leagues,, you know, let's say.
4:50: Let's say the weekend games, you could go check on Thursday and Friday and you will get your stats complete, ready for the weekend to absolutely smash the bet fair trading.
5:00: That's why leagues like this work.
5:02: You know, La Liga, yes, it plays a bit differently to the Premier League, but it's really popular.
5:07: There's lots of money involved in it.
5:09: , and as such.
5:11: In some ways, matches are more predictable.
5:14: Now you might think, well, that's a bad thing.
5:15: We don't want predictability, right?
5:17: Because if we're going to beat the market, you know, we need something that's going to surprise people, perhaps.
5:23: But really, in a way, you know, especially if you if you're like me and you use stats as your basis for trading, you do want predictability.
5:32: You want to be able to predict that, oh look, I can look at the form of these teams, and this is what's likely to happen in this match.
5:38: Well, I find the predictability in these bigger leagues tends to be a lot more predictable than in the smaller leagues, where a lot of the time in the smaller leagues you get games that just make no sense according to the stats and.
5:52: And you sit there and you go, well why is this?
5:54: Well, there's probably a few reasons.
5:56: I mean, first reason, there tends to be a bigger gap between the haves and the have-nots in the smaller leagues, believe it or not.
6:03: A lot of people think that no, this is only true in the top league, but actually in the top league everyone can usually beat anyone on their day.
6:12: And in the well supported leagues, lots of money involved, etc.
6:15: etc.
6:16: the talent gap isn't as wide as it is lowered down the pyramid a lot of the time.
6:21: , and not so much the pyramids, sorry, but, but say foreign countries with smaller leagues.
6:26: And you'll see this a lot in the Champions League where.
6:30: You know, in foreign countries, every year the same teams qualify for the Champions League.
6:35: And the reason for that is that they get a lot more money from being the Champions League that tends to help them sustain that every year, and it creates this massive divide.
6:44: , you know, look at Scotland.
6:46: Celtic or Rangers has won the Scottish Premier League every year since I've been watching it.
6:52: I know Aberdeen won it when I was, I think, 2.
6:55: Right, or 3, however old I was back then.
6:58: But you're going back, you know, nearly 40 years now.
7:01: , so what's crazy there is that you think that, oh well, they've got less money, maybe the talent gap's closer, it doesn't often work that way.
7:11: And as you can see there, the talent gap is just huge between the top and the bottom.
7:16: And yet we have seen, you know, we have seen teams like Atletico Madrid win La Liga.
7:20: Now it doesn't happen so much in La Liga, but we've seen different teams win the Premier League.
7:24: For goodness' sake, we've seen Leicester win the Premier League in Blackburn, if you remember that as well as I do from back in the 90s.
7:31: So you will see these things happen in the bigger leagues more often.
7:36: And in the smaller leagues, it tends to be the gap between the haves and the have nots is huge.
7:41: , so that's something to be aware of.
7:43: I'll give you a really good example of this, the WSL.
7:46: If you watch the WSL games, basically, if the top team is playing the bottom team, they're nearly always winning by 5+ goals.
7:54: You can just, you can just put your stake on it and go, yeah, that's gonna be a 5+ goal win.
7:58: You'll see odds like 1.02 for Chelsea to beat whoever's bottom of the league.
8:03: You know, that's not going to ever happen in the Premier League, or it hasn't ever happened.
8:07: You know, yes, you can get short odds sometimes if a top teams playing a bottom team, but never 1.02 pre-match.
8:13: So that's kind of the difference between these leagues and one of the reasons that actually for predictable stats trading, bigger leagues can be better.
8:22: But let's actually get on to more of the leagues.
8:23: So the third league I'm gonna talk about is the German Bundesliga.
8:28: Now, again, this is known for its brilliant liquidity,, especially when the big clubs are playing, you know, and it's a TV game.
8:35: And I know that Sky show a lot of the Bundesliga now.
8:38: , markets are often transparent, so it's easier to find your trading opportunities based on the real-time events.
8:47: , and again, if you've set up a strategy in the Betfair trading community software and it gives you selections from the leagues.
8:54: I tend to feel more comfortable.
8:56: When it gives me a selection from an Indian league, I'm like, oh this could be volatile.
9:02: And again, but let's think about this, right?
9:05: German teams are renowned for their discipline play, so you can recognize and exploit consistent market patterns.
9:11: Additionally, the fast-paced nature of Bundesliga games where there does tend to be a lot of goals from what I've seen.
9:17: , ample for in play trading scenarios, such as, you know, if you're backing goals or next team to score, both teams to score, all those, all those lovely markets people like to trade.
9:28: This can provide multiple avenues for profit.
9:32: And again, this is talking about a bigger league being more consistent because of the fact that the gap isn't as huge as it might be.
9:39: In other leagues.
9:41: And also, you know, all the teams can afford to hire good quality footballers.
9:46: And we might not think that sometimes lower down the table, but the fact is they can, you know, any team in the Bundesliga, if they're caught cold, can be beaten by the bottom team.
9:58: , and we do see that from time to time.
10:00: I mean, look at what happened to Bayern last season.
10:02: they lost quite a few matches, they weren't expected to lose.
10:05: , and especially once you get past Bayern.
10:08: , when you look past them, actually, quite often the other teams lose games that you wouldn't expect.
10:14: So again, quite an open league, but the talent gap not huge.
10:18: The next league is a league where.
10:21: The talent gap is really open, almost to the Premier League level, and that is the Italian Serie A.
10:27: one of my kind of soft spot guilty pleasure leagues that I love to watch,, because when I was young, Italian football was king and Football Italia, does the people remember Football Italia,, every, I used to think it was on a Sunday.
10:41: I used to get so excited and watch that show every week.
10:43: I love watching.
10:44: I loved all the big players.
10:45: There was some amazing teams back then.
10:47: The Palmer team.
10:50: That had so many great players in it.
10:52: Go and look up the Palmer kind of won the team of the 90s and you will not believe the players they had.
10:58: You know, a lot of them before they actually really had broken through as top class players.
11:02: , yeah, what a squad that was.
11:04: I think they had a young booon and they had players like Crespo.
11:07: , and it was just unbelievable.
11:11: Go and look it up.
11:12: , absolutely great teams.
11:14: So I love the Serie A,, and you won't be surprised that this comes in at number 4 as one of the leagues I like to trade.
11:21: It brings a strategic and defensive style of play to the table.
11:25: I often think you can watch a Serie A game and get a really good idea about how the match is gonna flow very quickly.
11:32: You know, teams set up tactic.
11:34: I do feel like tactically the Serie A plays on tactics more than other leagues.
11:39: I'm not saying it's tactically the best.
11:41: I'm just saying that it seems to be more of a focus, you know, the structure of the team matters so much.
11:46: There's not as much, you know, you're not going to see people really free flowing, moving in and out of positions as much.
11:53: It's like this is how we're going to play today.
11:55: And that's actually good for trading because you can see what's going to come sometimes,.
12:00: You can get low scoring games,, you know, if teams do set up defensively, you can, you can almost go wow, I think this is going to be a low scorer.
12:08: Although the Serie A has kind of opened up in a lot in recent years, so there's not as many really low scoring games.
12:14: It used to be kind of known for that.
12:16: , perhaps unfairly.
12:18: I mean, these, these labels do get thrown about.
12:20: , but historical data and season trends in Serie A can be leveraged for robust pre-match trading strategies.
12:28: , with fewer goals in general and more predictable outcomes, price movements in Serie A markets can be more manageable, offering steady opportunities for traders looking for consistent returns.
12:41: And again, this is a nice, just a nice league to trade trade.
12:44: And one of the things, and this was what was brilliant in the 90s and it's still brilliant today, it's quite an open league.
12:50: , you know, people think of Inter Milan at the moment as kind of the dominant force in Italy.
12:56: Well, they've only won two out of the last what, 5 titles.
13:01: So it's not like Man City where they've gone and won 4 in a row or anything like that.
13:05: In fact, before last season, they hadn't won it in 2 years.
13:09: And AC Milan and Napoli won the title, so.
13:13: You know, we've had years it's gone Juventus into AC Napoli, 4 different winners in 4 years.
13:20: In again.
13:21: So in a way 5 different winners because we haven't had a back to back in a while, and this season Napoli are top and looking very strong, and it's probably going to be between them and Inta by the looks of it, maybe Atalanta if they can get their act together a bit, but I think it's probably going to be a step too far for them.
13:36: , but the fact is that, you know, you are getting week in, week out, big teams losing to smaller teams.
13:43: You know, teams now like Fiorentina,, Lazio,, and like I say, Atalanta, who, who typically, although they are fairly big clubs, especially Fiorentina, especially Lazio,, almost sleeping giants in a way Lazio, because they haven't done a lot in the last, you know, say, 20 years.
14:04: So one of the things to note there is that, you know, this is an open league and a lot can happen in the matches, so it's a really interesting league to trade.
14:11: And again, the talent gap between the haves and the have nots is not quite as big as you'd expect.
14:17: In fact, there's very few teams that you can roll over.
14:20: You do get the odd one, like this season, I mean, I watched Letce play into yesterday and they looked, you know, they did look second class and well off the ball and Letce were at home, but.
14:31: It's rare, you might get 2 or 3 teams each year that are like that.
14:36: There's not, you're not going to get many more than that.
14:38: , and so yeah, really good league to trade.
14:41: And the last one I'm going to mention today.
14:44: Is the French League One.
14:46: and it's last but not least, because I actually really like this as a league to trade,, and it might not be as prominent as the Premier League or La Liga, but League One has been steadily gaining attention.
14:58: Obviously, when it had Killian and Mbappe for so many years, doesn't anymore, obviously.
15:03: High profile matches, especially those involving PSG.
15:06: Again, offer good liquidity.
15:09: A lot of these top European leagues, you, you're going to get money.
15:13: It's not going to be difficult to get your money matched.
15:15: I think that's really important.
15:17: , with increasing international viewership, which is leading to broader market participation, this should enhance trading opportunities, more money in the market.
15:28: As League One continues to grow.
15:31: It presents unique chances for traders to capitalize on emerging trends and market dynamics, and of course as traders, that's what we always want to do.
15:41: So I'm gonna give some honorable mentions here because I wanted to keep the list of 5 leagues, cos if you're gonna focus on 5 leagues to start trading, look at the Premier League, look at the Liga, look at the Bundesliga, look at the Serie A, and look at League One.
15:56: Here's some other leagues I like to trade, OK, notable mentions.
16:00: The Dutch Ea devii.
16:02: Now this is good, it's known for very high scoring games, lots of attacking football.
16:07: Portuguese Premiera Liga, not so much.
16:10: You know, maybe the top teams score a lot of goals,, but Portugal can be quite kind of slow and low scoring.
16:16: , in fact, it's a lot of these kinds of,, you know, Latin-based teams, so leagues.
16:24: You know, you could even say Spain.
16:25: I mean, the second division and lower on Spain, some of the draw odds on there are sometimes the drawer's favorite, which is nuts, right?
16:33: You never see that in football, but sometimes a drawer's favorite, you know, unders will be heavy odds on to happen under 2.5 goals.
16:42: So you know there's certain leagues I don't love as a, as a goal backer in general.
16:47: , the MLS is a good one for goals.
16:50: , another one I mention is it's on early doors, but the Australian league really like that for goals.
16:57: And in the summer, I'm looking at the Japanese leagues.
17:01: I'm not massive on the Korean leagues.
17:02: I found them quite hard to predict and unpredictable.
17:05: I do like the Japanese football.
17:07: There's a lot of it, and it's, it generally has decent money, decent liquidity, because at the time of year it's on, there's not a lot else on.
17:15: So you do generally tend to get some decent money in those games.
17:19: , and they're sort of the ones that spring to mind.
17:24: South American leagues.
17:26: It's weird because like, I mean I quite like, say, Paraguay, but I don't love Brazil or Argentina,, because again, I don't know what it is, some of these South American leagues, the games can be very flat, very defensive,, I don't, sometimes it doesn't look particularly tactically great.
17:47: I mean, I'm thinking like Peru, Chile, and games where it's just.
17:51: You know, I mean, for want of a better phrase, running around like headless chickens, you watch some of these matches, go and watch them, it's brilliant.
17:58: They have them on bet 365, they're great to watch, but it's like watching, you know, when kids start playing football when they're like 8 or whatever, and you, they play a match and they don't know what to do, and they all just run towards the ball and you just all you end up with is loads of players around the ball and then no one's around the rest of the pitch apart from the goalkeepers.
18:17: , maybe the goalkeepers even come out when they're that age, I don't know.
18:21: But yeah, so some of those leagues are quite off-putting.
18:25: , and again, I think this is why you will find your balance in a way, when you start trading, you'll start to see which leagues you like.
18:33: I mean, I'm very, I'm not a fan of Asian leagues particularly, so I mean I know I quite like Japan.
18:39: China's one I'm, I'm a bit indifferent on, I'm not sure about.
18:43: Indonesia, Thailand.
18:46: All those kinds of countries in that area, I just, they just seem unstable, the matches.
18:52: Like the data I've tracked just gives me reason to pause and go, I don't know if I want to include them.
18:58: And that's what it has to be, right?
19:00: If you're gonna filter out leagues, if you're gonna look at leagues you don't want to trade, look at the data.
19:04: If the data you've recorded is telling you, oh, this isn't a good league to trade.
19:09: Well, it probably isn't, and it probably doesn't work for your strategy.
19:12: And you might find that different leagues work better for different strategies, and I'm sure that's the case, you know.
19:17: , if I'm looking at an under strategy, I'm probably gonna be looking at,, Portugal 2nd division, rather than say the Dutch 2nd division, which,, if you know that Dutch 2nd division, that can be crazy on goals.
19:32: , MLS is good, again, evening matches, so you can trade it if, if you're out in the day.
19:38: , obviously some overnight, so if you're one of those night shift guys, you can trade it.
19:44: , but yeah, I like the MLS, good league.
19:46: , so yeah, that's it for the leagues today.
19:50: , we've covered the top leagues.
19:52: I want to talk though about, kind of give a bit of a general view of why they're good for trading on Betfair, so.
20:00: Number 1, liquidity.
20:02: Talked about that a lot, I'm not gonna go on about that.
20:04: Number 2, market depth.
20:06: Established leagues tend to have a wide range of betting markets such as match odds, which we could call match result, if you don't know what that means.
20:16: Both teams to score, all the overs, unders, bets, things like draw no bet,, lots of markets, correct score, obviously offering various trading strategies.
20:27: So it's really good because you've got market depth.
20:30: OK, the third thing, information availability.
20:33: Now this is really important.
20:34: If you're a bet fair trader, you want to be able to get lots of information and get the best information.
20:39: And the comprehensive coverage of these leaks means that you can access real-time data.
20:44: You'll get news updates, statistical analysis, essential for making informed trading decisions.
20:50: You can use the Betfair trading community software.
20:52: Like I say, all of the leagues I've mentioned today are covered there and lots more.
20:57: So you're gonna be able to get up to the date stats, up to the minute stats.
21:02: But also,, you know, you've got things like Twitter for team use, if you, if you want to find out what's happening, you know, are the, are those top players playing?
21:11: Are there big injuries for this team?
21:13: , that can be a really good thing for figuring out whether you want to enter a trade or not.
21:19: Number 4, volatility and predictability, OK?
21:23: So, what I mean by this, cos that's kind of a a oxymoron, but.
21:29: Now, volatility, what I mean by that is there will be goals a lot of the time, and the market will move, and that's great, that's what we want.
21:36: But it's also kind of predictable, like we can kind of predict where that's gonna happen.
21:41: And if you've got a good strategy, you'll be able to do that.
21:44: So that's something that you really wanna look at.
21:47: Balance between unpredictability and consistent patterns provides opportunities for both reactive, which is in play, and proactive, which obviously is pre-match trading strategies.
21:58: So you want some level of predictability, surprisingly,, but it's important that the odds are gonna move, cos if you're trading, one thing you want is the odds moving.
22:09: , and then time zones of match timing, look.
22:13: Mostly listening to this are going to be UK residents who are into bet fair trading.
22:19: Now, I know we have a lot of European and and even like American fans, so that's cool.
22:25: But in general, the leagues I've mentioned, the time zones are going to fit your schedule perfectly.
22:30: If you live in Europe, the European football tends to happen in the evening.
22:33: So if you've got a normal job where you're working, or if you're doing anything in the day, maybe the school runs, things like that, you don't have to worry about missing football, it will be there.
22:42: , so that's really good having the time zones and match timing involved on that front.
22:48: , before we wrap up, I'm just gonna give you a few essential tips for trading football leagues on Betfair.
22:55: Number one, research thoroughly.
22:57: Now again, if you've got Betfair trading community, you've kind of taken the hard work out of this.
