Some of us have pushed that quiet inner voice so far down we've forgotten it was ever there. But what if intuition isn't something you're born with or without, what if it's something you can practice, develop, and lean into right now, in the middle of your everyday life?
In this episode, Vanessa sits down with Cheryl Murphy, evidential medium, clairvoyant healer, ordained minister, certified hypnotherapist, and intuitive facilitator. The conversation moves from the practical to the profound, covering how intuition works, why curiosity is one of the most powerful tools we have, what a real mediumship reading feels like, and why connecting with our loved ones in spirit is less scary and more healing than most of us ever imagined. Vanessa also shares her own deeply personal experience with her first-ever reading and why it changed her.

FTBM Podcast Ep306: How to Trust Your Intuition and Live a More Fulfilled Life
Cheryl: [00:00:00] intuition is something that we are born with. It's an ability we already have. And I'm here to encourage people to practice and to develop it, because it is truly amazing the power we have, or the instincts, or the intuition that we do have. We have so much ability that we are just still tapping into. That physics is catching up with metaphysics in a way. So, making people feel good and aware of their bodies, aware of their health, aware of how they're feeling, of their emotions. These are all powerful indicators or powerful messages of how to live a fulfilling life.
Vanessa: You are listening to the Free to Be Mindful podcast, where busy moms get practical tips and real talk conversations to find calm joy in a little more breathing room in everyday life. I'm Vanessa Licensed therapist, mom, coach, and a mom to a tween and toddler. Each week we get honest about motherhood and mindset helping you live with more presence, [00:01:00] less pressure without losing your well, you know.
Here we go.
Hello and welcome to the Free To Be Mindful Podcast. I hope you're feeling good, looking good and doing better in this world than you were yesterday. So today we have a one of a kind guest. Her name is Cheryl Murphy and she is an evidential medium.
Now Cheryl's practice as a spiritual medium, really channels loved ones who has passed over. She is clairvoyant. She's a healer and an ordained minister, as well as a certified hypnotherapist and an intuitive facilitator.
We had truly amazing conversation about what is intuition? Can you find and can you improve your intuition? How to live a more fulfilled life. And of course, we talked about what I consider to be her gifts and her talents.
I share about my experience with a recent reading that I just had and [00:02:00] how that has changed my life as well. Throughout this time I could not stop smiling because her energy was just so amazing and we talked about such interesting things that I hope the energy is contagious and you end up feeling the exact same way.
Cheryl, welcome to the Free To Be Mindful Podcast. I'm so glad you're with us today.
Cheryl: Thank you so much for having me.
Vanessa: Absolutely. My pleasure. You are the first of your kind, as if you were an alien from Outer Space. I'm so excited to have you. We heard a little bit of your intro, but anything that you'd like to spice it up with?
Cheryl: What I'd like to share with people, because some people don't believe they're intuitive and I wanna say, look, you are born intuitive. That's really my fun fact, is this is an ability that you can get whether you practice it, develop it, have fun with it. But it really does lead you down the, down the path a little bit easier. I have to say, it's knowing that you have a little higher guidance system is kind of a, something good to have in your back pocket, right? [00:03:00]
Vanessa: Yes, it's like a, a magic trick or a secret weapon that you can really use at any time if you are intuitive about being intuitive.
Cheryl: Truly, truly, or if you're curious about what intuition is, you can start developing it right away.
Vanessa: So let's start there because when I talk about mindfulness, I always say it's paying attention to the right here, right now, but I always add the caveat, so to speak, with kindness and with curiosity.
Because I think that kids are so good at being curious. And then as adults, we kind of either think we know it all or forget that it's okay to still be curious and learn new things all the time.
So when we talk about, or when we think about being curious about being intuitive, where do we even go from there?
Cheryl: Curiosity is amazing. And also compassion right, and kindness.
All those amazing qualities actually open up your intuitive gifts. They open up your ability to connect to your higher intuition. You know, to tell [00:04:00] what road you should be going down or what class you take next, or what investment to take, or giving you those hunches that even moms have with their children. Actually trusting your gut. That's the first place to go that I always tell people, trust your gut. You'll never go wrong.
Vanessa: Absolutely. And we all have that within us because sometimes when things happen and you're like, oh, I, I, I should have done this. Like, I knew that was the answer, or I should have taken this road instead of that road. But I'd like to know how you began to develop your intuition. And maybe the listeners can start picking up from there and really forming and shaping what they already have, and then where they can go from here.
Cheryl: Developing your intuitive gifts and as I started, really I started working with other people, that was really my sure way of practicing my intuitive gifts. So that's what I always say to people, find a group of friends, find a group people that you can connect with to talk about this subject. And really always bring love to be your foundation. Right? We always have to [00:05:00] start with love and kindness and giving and to be of help, to be of service. But that raises your vibration right away.
When I started practicing, I actually started practicing with my siblings when I was very young because it runs in our family. But as we got older, I started really practicing with my friends. That's the best place to go. Number one is with your friends 'cause they're very trustworthy. You can kind of shoot off the hip even if you get information wrong. You know, there's no judgment there. But then once again, joining a class or a group really does teach you how to kind of start practicing your intuition.
Right off the bat, just to tell you, I would say look, start practicing your intuition by looking at the utility bill. If it's coming in the mail or online, before you open it, see if you know how much it costs. Or the grocery bill. Or Vanessa, right When the phone rings, you already know who's on the phone. You can tell just by the ring dial. That's intuition.
Vanessa: I love that it reminds me of a game I play with my [00:06:00] son. And I don't think this is quite intuition, it's more of memory. But when we listen to old songs from the nineties and the early two thousands, and we'll play a game like, well, what, what year did that song come out?
You know? And I have to test my memory. Oh. And he's always like, oh, you got it right or you got it wrong. And I'm always like, plus or minus two years, it's still okay, being that I'm getting older and the memory sometimes goes.
But that's what that reminds me of as far as just practicing with the people who you can trust and who you care for, and, and almost turning it into a game to see, well, what is there? And that way you see if you're developing it.
Cheryl: Absolutely. Also, if you watch television a lot like I do, I love watching game shows. You can practice with game shows. You know, especially with multiple choice or even if you get a feeling, even if you get in the neighborhood or the ballpark, if you get more right than wrong, that's your intuition at work.
And look, when we get things wrong, it doesn't mean that you're actually wrong. It means that you're trying, that you're close. So keep going. Don't let the [00:07:00] wrongs, you know, take you out of the game, so to speak. We gotta keep at it, because what will happen is that intuitive voice, you'll begin to trust that it's the first voice. The intuitive voice, those little hunches, they come in, right before the thought.
So before you and I, before we start thinking, the, before the thinking mind activates, there is a little bit of a hint, a glimpse, a soft whisper of the intuition happening for you. So when we can kind of learn to pay attention right through quietness, meditation, even just through sitting in stillness for a few moments, relaxing, trust that inner voice.
Vanessa: Yeah. So you said you developed this skill as a young child and would practice with your siblings and your friends. When did you really know that like there is something here and I can do something with this something, with this gift?
Cheryl: Well, number one, I've done it my whole life 'cause it's really been a passion for me. It's been a vocation, like, it's just part of who I [00:08:00] am is I love doing readings for people, helping them connect with their loved ones in spirit, for example. But it really wasn't until my adult life, my twenties, that I believe Angels came to me. This is what happened. It was in my house, and maybe other people have had this experience, but for me it was life changing.
I had angels come into my home. They really guided me and told me that they needed me not only to be their voice, but to allow them to connect with other people. Because it's through the power of love that we do hone into our intuition and we do hone into that higher guidance system of our guides, angels, loved ones, direction in life, all those big questions we have. It's really a big moment for me in my life.
Vanessa: Absolutely amazing and thank you by the way, for being vulnerable and trusting enough to share that with us, and then after experiencing this, that's what guided you to say, okay, there's something here, and I can do something with it to be of service [00:09:00] to others.
Cheryl: Yes. It kind of took me from doing it just for my friends and family, so to speak, to a really bigger platform, to bringing it to a bigger audience.
Vanessa: And then this is where my curiosity kicks in. Either speaking to angels or speaking to, I'm assuming people who have passed on, what other talents do you have that go along with this gift and with this intuition?
Cheryl: So just to share with people, when you step into that power, we'll call it power of love and intuition. For me, my mediumship, when I do connect with loved ones and guides, I also do energy work. I do healing work. I do psychic investigation where I help find missing persons. I do medical intuition, or health and wellness intuition, is what I like to call it, where I can see energy blocks or sluggish energy in someone's aura. And then also I love to do animal readings or pet [00:10:00] readings for our loving pets that have, are both here living and that have crossed over. I think pets have such an amazing soul.
And for all those pet lovers out there, me included, there's just nothing like it when you find us soulmate in one of your animals or when you really feel that you have a communication, and I'm here to validate that or to confirm that.
Vanessa: You see my face. So for those of you who are just listening to the podcast, if you're watching this on YouTube, I'm like smiling from ear to ear.
And Cheryl, I have a therapy dog, an almost 6-year-old Golden Doodle named Ollie. Goldendoodles have very, soulful eyes. So I feel like you're looking into the soul of a human because they're so expressive. I think when he and I look at each other, I feel like he's talking to me through his eyes and I understand his needs.
And he's a therapy dog, but there's only so much training that, you know, a sit and a stay and a good dog - those are things that can be trained. But there's something within animals that's innate to them, that they just have, and [00:11:00] they're up tuned into that, that perhaps we are not tuned into. And that's why he knows exactly when to go over to a client when they're crying, or when they're not feeling great, or when they're a little anxious. Like he just has that in him. And you can't train that. That's something that a pet, an animal, a dog just has. So that makes me smile. As far as, I don't, I don't think I'm crazy. I think that there's something there.
Cheryl: There's absolutely something there. It's telepathy. Dogs and animals they communicate telepathically. And also it's through that unconditional love where the, there's no ego there, there's no barriers. They are just free flowing, just bundles of love. And their instincts, their intuition is absolutely spot on. And they're also tuning in just to tell you about your beautiful furry friend, very tuned into your energy as well. So they are also helping you to help connect with the person you're helping.
And they're are protectors too. We have to really realize that. They say it's a coincidence that when we adopt the shelter [00:12:00] dog or when, however animals come into our life, a stray wanders up, there are no coincidences. We have to really start admitting or acknowledging that there is that divine orchestration that it's a soul recognition.
Vanessa: I'm glad that you brought that phrase up because I've learned to kind of let the coincidences almost out of my vocabulary, because I am right there with you.
I don't believe in coincidences anymore because it's only so much that things can align so well that it has to be something beyond just being a mere coincidence. There has to be something else there.
Cheryl: Yes. And when you start, like you said, when you start stepping into that believing of a synchronistic event happening, you know what happens? More synchronistic events happen, right? When we step into the miracle of synchronicity and every day living, that everything is a miracle, then we experience more miracles 'cause we're opening up our energy field to welcome, to notice, to [00:13:00] allow that awareness to be part of our life.
And that's the beauty of intuition. When you open up your intuitive field, your intuition, it's better to feel good about the decisions you're making, 'cause you're taking it in at a instinctual level. You're taking it in into a spiritual, soulful place where you can trust your higher self. So there's no second guessing your intuition after a while, you really do work with that flow of energy, and then life becomes freer and more fun and more easy for everyone.
Vanessa: Yeah, I say a little bit more magical, if you wanna believe it in that sense.
Yeah. Something that you said really sticks out to me. I have my Mindful living framework, I really believe in the power of gratitude, and I always say the more good that you seek, the more good that you'll see. And it sounds like it's right along those lines- that if you don't believe in just coincidences and you believe there's things out there, then the more of that will come to you.
Cheryl: Not only [00:14:00] does gratitude help you manifest the things that you want in your life, but it helps you be a healthy person.
I feel if we can write down five things a day, as they say, get a gratitude journal. Write down five things you're appreciative of, you're grateful for, and really keep that as a journal. I know people who have been doing it for 30 years and they're just- they love their lives so much with passion.
But gratitude to recognize it in the scale of vibration. It's a very high vibration, so it opens your energy field up and your awareness up like nothing else. Forgiveness, gratitude, love, these beautiful high vibrational frequencies where gratitude can help you not, as we said, manifest, it can help you heal. It can help you create and attract the things that you'd like to have in your life.
Vanessa: Yes, and what I'm really appreciating about our conversation is that depending on our lived experiences, and in our trainings and the way that we show up in the world, some of us believe either [00:15:00] in more science, or in the non sciencey word- in the more woo stuff - that maybe our conversation falls a little bit more into that category.
However, even as a licensed therapist, I'm all about- therapy sometimes isn't the only thing out there that can help a person. And it can be meeting with, let's say, a wellness coach if you're on a wellness journey. Or someone like yourself to that to help you become more intuitive or to help get in contact with others or with other pieces of yourself, so that you can grow in this journey of life.
It doesn't have to be just the science and the medicine or the therapy. There's so many things out there that can help you live a life full of wellness and not just live in one lane, so to speak.
Cheryl: You're so right and a lot of times people second guess themselves and they second guess themselves for many things.
And what intuition helps is to soften that, is to reassure you that yeah, you know those hunches are correct. And what you're [00:16:00] feeling is right. And really to help I think empower people. I think when you can develop your intuition just the idea of having fun with it too, helps empower you. It helps you feel like, yeah, I'm a take charge person and I am a co-creator of my life, of my world.
Vanessa: Yeah, I like that. I'm a co-creator of my life and of my world. I really, really appreciate that sentence.
And so we're talking about intuition within oneself. But when we go back to where we started in, either getting in contact or having some kinds of communication with our loved ones, especially those who have passed or those who we don't have with us in any type of form.
There's something to that and that's where the skeptics come in. And I've shared with you, but I'll share with all the listeners. I had my very first reading ever about two months ago or so now. And I've always been not skeptical. I think it's probably more fear than anything. Fear of the unknown. And who's gonna come through and is this really real, and how do they know, [00:17:00] and can they just Google?
So before my call with someone else here in the state of New Jersey, I had all of these questions. But I went on the call and five minutes in, I was in tears the entire time. Mm-hmm. Loved ones came through. This person with her gift she knew things that nobody in the world could ever know. It was such a I think like an life altering experience because of what she shared with me, whether it be from, people who I love who are no longer here, and in other ways and shapes and things.
So I just wanna put that out there to share. Not that I was a skeptic, I was very afraid, but then this experience was really so, so moving and now I recommend it to everybody and anyone because you never know. And I'm always like, give it a try and then take it from there.
Letting that land with you if you have anything to share about that? And in addition to that, then what do you say to the skeptics? Because I'll share with you, she shared things about my family and I shared them with my parents. They were on [00:18:00] board. But my brothers were like, Nope, there's no way. And they kept trying to find everything that can kind of, you know, rationalize what she shared. But it really was no other way other than her talent, and her intuition, and her gift that she shared with me.
Cheryl: I love it. I love, and I love the synchronicity of that you had a reading and it just gelled and it vibed, and you could validate. That's like an evidential medium ship reading where she provided information that you could validate or confirm about your loved ones who have passed. So that. That's amazing.
And also what was great about your reading is that you came, even though you were a skeptic or you had fear, you came with an open mind and an open heart that maybe something, there was something to learn, something to get out of the experience. And that's really all I ask.
All any medium asks is just know that there's a reason why you're coming. Come with an open mind, an open heart, and just see. Just see what happens. And usually you'll be able to take a [00:19:00] couple of things. With luck or with an open mind you can understand more of the information. And sometimes when you can't understand the information being given to you, the medium may say, um take that note, just put it in your back pocket for now. Don't think too much about it. You may find that answer out in a few days, right? When you ask your relatives that name of your loved ones or something that you find out. And that's really amazing information to come through.
So when I see skeptics and when I see people who have fear, my job as a medium, to start the reading anyway, is to start by helping you relax into it.
Spirit will never share anything that they don't feel that you would want to not hear. Right? Spirit shares everything from the divine love, energy, frequency. So your loved ones, they're here to help and to support you, to bring through information that shows that they're with you and they saw you know that you are eating that peanut butter and jelly sandwich a week ago. Things like [00:20:00] that. But you know.
Our loved ones in spirit are here to help. There's nothing to fear from spirit other than what we make of it. Because when there's something to fear, it's usually something that we saw on a Hollywood movie. Because when you step into the in infinite intelligence of the universe, you understand that, oh my God, this is an amazing divine orchestration that you being a spirit, connecting with another spirit who just is not in a physical body, is really one of those miracles that happens every day.
And really thinking about it, you and I, we are in the presence of spirit all the time. Like they're always with us. It's our awareness. As soon as we start thinking about them, they're here.
Vanessa: I'm so happy that you mentioned that because there were things when I met with this person who, she did mention names and I just, I was very emotional, so that was one thing I was not thinking as clearly as I could. And I was so focused on families. But then she mentioned things, whether there be of [00:21:00] friends, or of friends of friends. And they came up after, you know, once I heard, I played the recording back and I was like, oh my goodness, I cannot believe that I didn't pick up on that one thing. Where she mentioned a friend who was like a sister. And I wasn't even thinking, oh, it was my sorority sister that had just passed away. But I was thinking of family that I didn't even open up myself to that.
So I highly recommend to anybody listening to get in contact with Cheryl or anybody who has this talent and gift and just, you know, go in like we started, with a sense of curiosity and with an open mind. 'Cause you never know.
Cheryl: You never know. And just to share with you what you did was perfectly normal and natural. We do, we only think of our immediate family when we go in to get a reading. We're just thinking of people we know. But then once again, the spirit world has other ideas in mind.
Maybe they want you to connect. And sometimes they ask you to be the messenger to get that message. Like for the sorority sister. Maybe didn't happen, but maybe [00:22:00] next reading you get, there may be a message that you deliver to her family. You could be the messenger. You never know.
Vanessa: Yeah. Ugh. That, that like gives me chills in such a good way.
Cheryl: Exactly. Exactly. Very reassuring and very touching, that we're all connected to spirit. That love never dies and that they're with us. Love is eternal. And really the survival of consciousness, the personality, who they were, the memories they have, the experiences that they have are more vibrant than ever. So they do not forget. They don't forget about us.
And usually the messages are one of love and support. Sometimes they can be of forgiveness or asking for forgiveness. And maybe just showing us what they've learned on the other side. They're, they're evolving too.
Vanessa: Yeah. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
And we went really wide. But I wanna pull it back to how what you do really aligns or really is being mindful and living mindfully because it's paying attention [00:23:00] to paying attention. Widening your awareness. Really being in the right here, right now, as I mentioned, with kindness to yourself and to others, and with curiosity. And that opens you up to so many things that you can see, but also to the beyond, I would say. Would you agree?
Cheryl: I would agree and being in the present moment, your mind is not so much involved with worry or frustration. You're more about the breath. You're more about a calmness, a peacefulness, and that's where spirit communication really can step in. So even following the path of mindfulness can open up your intuition for anyone interested.
And once again, intuition is something that we are born with. It's an ability we already have. And I'm here to encourage people to practice and to develop it, because it is truly amazing the power we have, or the instincts, or the intuition that we do have. We have so much ability that we are just still tapping [00:24:00] into. That physics is catching up with metaphysics in a way. So, making people feel good and aware of their bodies, aware of their health, aware of how they're feeling, of their emotions. These are all powerful indicators or powerful messages of how to live a fulfilling life.
Vanessa: Yes. Yes. And that's the important piece there. We only get, however long we get so live it joyfully and live it fulfilled, which is still very important.
But Cheryl, I have a very personal question for you. Not too personal, but a little personal. I know as a therapist sometimes I hear such heavy things and deepest deep things that people only trust to share with me as their therapist. And I know that that sometimes can be heavy on my soul and I can't imagine you hearing things in this world, and then things beyond, how that can be heavy for you.
So in your line of work and with the gift that you have, how do you allow yourself to [00:25:00] somehow let that go and take care of yourself?
Cheryl: Self-care has to be at the top of the list. How I take care of my own energy is I have a practice of when I'm working, I open my awareness to allow spirit to work with my energy field or to connect with me to help others. And then when I'm not working, I also have to practice closing down or shutting down my energy field, my chakras, so to speak. I may step out of my office for the day. I step out into sunshine. Getting something to eat that's nutritional. Drinking water. Stepping into the quietness, just to have that gratitude and say, thank you for working with me today.
It's like you move away from it very gently. Grounding is the best way that we can either connect with spirit or also, go about our business and maintain that privacy, maintain that boundary, that we are in our own energy field and we are no longer [00:26:00] working.
And it's really an agreement that you have with yourself. We need people to practice, kindness, self-compassion, plenty of rest, reading inspirational information, talking to friends, playing with animals, your kids. . Having a really balanced life, can really lead you to a very healthful and healthy, spiritual life as well.
Vanessa: Absolutely. And yes, I don't go around Therapizing, so to speak, people all the time. Once I leave my office, I'm Vanessa, and then I come in and I'm Vanessa the therapist again. So I definitely hear what you're saying.
Cheryl: Yeah. Yeah. We don't wanna walk around as a medium or an intuitive 'cause it's very easy to kind of get into someone else's energy field. You do that just with your intention, your energy goes out because energy follows thought.
So it's easy to blend and start giving anyone a reading. Not that it's something we should be doing, because respectfully, we should be in our own energy. It's only with someone else's permission, or when they come to me for a reading that I'm given permission [00:27:00] to blend or to step into their energy field.
So you begin to have a real respect for energy in this world, and you then you begin to have even a higher respect for your own.
Vanessa: Beautifully said.
Cheryl: Yeah.
I just love to share with people. There's so many people who are wanting to feel connected. So many people struggling or feeling lonely these days. And once again, it's not to go around giving readings, but it's to connect with people in a human way. And I think in some way that can help open our intuition too.
Vanessa: Yes, and now more than ever where we claim to be connected through our phones, but yet we are really not connecting with others. I think that's probably more needed than at any other time.
Cheryl: So true, so true. And when you connect with someone through kind words, through a smile even, you don't realize how many people you're touching or you know, really what they're going through, right? We don't know what's going on in someone else's life. And if we can be that beacon of light or be that [00:28:00] lighthouse and that our intuition, we're trusting it, we're following it, then we can really help heal others even though we may never meet them or we may never know what they're going through.
Vanessa: Yeah. I love that. Cheryl, if you could be remembered for anything in this world, what would it be?
Cheryl: If I could be remembered for anything, it would be really for helping others or helping others understand the importance of grace, right? Having grace and gratitude and really putting yourself in someone else's shoes, by the way. Because in that way, compassion will open your heart like nothing else, right? Compassion and gratitude. Yeah, I'd, I'd like to be known for helping others.
Vanessa: Thank you, and I mean for sure, even helping putting on the smile on my face today. I greatly appreciate the amazing work that you're doing. I know you have an amazing book. You have a website. Tell us all about it and where we can learn more about you.
Cheryl: So first, I wanna remind people they are very [00:29:00] intuitive and if you wanna see how intuitive you are, I do offer a free quiz on my website. It's right there when you go to medium cheryl.com, and it's a popup window. It's called, how strong is your strong Suits, meaning what intuitive ability do you have? So it's a really fun 10 question quiz. People can find out, you know, are they clairvoyant, right? Are they Clair sentient? All these different ways. So I encourage that.
Vanessa: Nice. Well, thank you. Thank you. If you're on YouTube, you saw that flash across your screen. If not, you can always find those links in the show notes. Cheryl, I appreciate your energy and spending time with us today, and really sharing of your gift and the importance that intuition plays in our lives. So thank you.
Cheryl: Thank, thank you, Vanessa. Thank you for having me today. It's been really such a joy to be with you today.
Vanessa: Thank you Cheryl, once again. That was absolutely amazing. And again, if you're watching on YouTube, I mean, I haven't stopped smiling. And it's just interesting. It's fun to [00:30:00] learn about something new.
So I know to some it sounds kind of woo, and I know some like the numbers and the data and the things that we can touch and feel and see for ourselves, but I truly believe that there is much more to us as humans, than the body that we have. There's a deeper part of our soul that is here with us now. And that I think once our body leaves this earth, our soul is somewhere and that soul continues to connect with those they love.
So on today's guided reflection, regardless of what you thought about this topic, I ask you to think of what's one area of your life that you are more curious about? Doesn't necessarily have to mean meeting with a medium. It could be what, maybe opening another life career choice, what path that would leave you down? Maybe changing an aspect of how you interact with others, what [00:31:00] that would lead to?
We can be curious about, oh, so many things, but do we do something about it? And living a mindful life is all about slowing down enough in order to become aware of that. Then being curious, trying something new, and should it not work out as Cheryl shared, having grace for others and grace for yourself goes a long way.
Thank you so much for tuning in today. Remember, if you found this interesting or if you think that it can help a friend or an Amiga mom, please be sure to share it with them. And as always, remember in a world where you are free to be anything you are always free to be mindful. Have a great one.
